UTCs are making a big difference to students across England with 30 already open and a further 20 opening in the next two years. Students, staff, and employers are working hard to create the schools of the future, today. This new technical education is academically and vocationally rewarding both for students and employers.
The concept of UTCs was created by Lord Baker and Lord Dearing to bridge the skills gap by linking Industry with education. The Baker Dearing Educational Trust (BDT) was founded to develop and promote the concept of University Technical Colleges.

The BDT helps UTCs benefit from being a part of a bigger network by providing opportunities to share good practices, attend seminars, and stretch budgets through joint procurement. The BDT educational advisers help to develop curricula and advise on suitable technical qualifications. Supporting UTCs with setting standards, issues around leadership and management, and through liaising with the universities and employers who are UTC partners.
The BDT raises awareness of UTCs with the government, the media, and the public. By increasing the profile of UTCs there aim is to ensure that everyone has an understanding of UTCs and what they offer to young people, employers, and the wider community. Represent the interests of UTCs when it comes to curricula, qualifications, and Department for Education policy.

With expert careers, advice from our employer partners and university, mentoring, site visits, and work placements, every student has the opportunity to secure paid employment through a paid traineeship or apprenticeship – or a place in higher education, for which bursaries and scholarships are available.
LDE UTC offers personalized learning based on a challenging curriculum with clear progression into employment, higher education, or apprenticeships. This is a school for achievers, you will be expected to have a real flair in design and engineering subjects, and a thirst for wanting to develop your skills and life chances.
