This means we can produce worksheets with the appropriate letter formation. You have probably seen it in homework jotters. The upper school also uses PrimEd for spelling. Throughout the school, we use Heinemann Active Maths. Although it is used in primary 1, the very clever p1 teachers have also made many wonderful resources of their own. These are used in conjunction with Number Zoo. Using these resources, the teachers can take the children through number formation as well as counting and simple adding and taking away. Heinemann Active Maths (HAM) is split into 2 sections: Exploring Number and Beyond Number. Exploring Number covers all addition and subtraction as well as tables and multiplication and division. Also popular with our pupils is the annual Dickensian Evening and Christmas Tree Festival, a delightful mix of carol singers, roasted chestnut stalls, street actors, and shop assistants dressed in Victorian costume. The Abbey, which was largely destroyed during the Reformation, housed one of the first printing presses in England. Birthplace of Sir Francis Drake, the town is steeped in history and our teachers make full use of this, particularly with our Prep School children as they can experience for themselves how history has grown and shaped the local community. The Bus Station is located in central Tavistock and from here Senior pupils can take the bus into Plymouth where there is a large cinema complex, skating rink, shopping center, and a range of tourist attractions. Mount Florida Primary and Nursery Class is a three-story sandstone building that was built in 1897 so it is over one hundred years old. The school is now classed as a listed building. Only this term have we been fortunate enough to have new windows installed making the school watertight. A lot more light is coming in making the classrooms and the whole school brighter. The school is situated near Hampden Park in between Carmunnock Road and Cathcart Road. There are two playgrounds. The infant classes are on the upper playground in Carmunnock Road and P4-7 is in the larger lower playground on Cathcart Road. Mount Florida is a non-denominational, multi-racial school. At present we have 237 primary school pupils and 10 classes. We have a nursery class that accommodates 20 children in the morning session and 20 children in the afternoon session. The Curriculum we offer is A Curriculum for Excellence – Early Level. This is a broad and deep general education. The curriculum is experiential and child-centered advocating ‘learning through play. It sets out a wide range of experiences that enable children to become successful learners, confident individuals, responsible citizens, and effective contributors. We are a Catholic school within the Diocese of Westminster. Our mission is serving the local Catholic parish of St. Peter & St. Paul’s, is to offer Catholic education, spiritual and moral teaching to the children in our care. Religious education lies at the core of everything that we do. We devote 10% of curriculum time to the teaching of RE and follow the ‘Come and See scheme of work from Reception to Year 6. We also explore and express our faith through other subjects across the curriculum. Our parish priest is a regular visitor to the school and there are many occasions throughout the year when we celebrate Mass together as a whole school as well as our year group liturgies and masses. We are very proud of our distinctive Catholic ethos which is underpinned by our mission statement: I have come so that they may have life, and have it to the full.’ We place Christ at the center of all that we do and offer all things to God. It is our aim at Mount Carmel to provide the opportunity for our children to safely experience a range of sporting activities for their fun and enjoyment. Through carefully planned PE and sports activities, we aim to ensure that all children are happy and enjoy PE, thus raising participation levels both in and out of school and therefore in turn, promoting healthy lifestyles. We strive to provide high-quality PE and sports teaching in both curriculum and extra-curricular clubs. Children in Reception, Years 1 & 2, receive Universal Free School Meals which means you do not have to pay for their school dinner. However, we would strongly encourage all eligible parents, regardless of which year group their child is in, to apply for Free School Meals as the school receives extra funding which can improve your child’s learning. Our After School Club runs from 3 pm until 6 pm every term-time day. Children are offered a vast range of activities to enjoy and extend their learning experiences, including cookery, arts and crafts, ICT, sports, games, and role-play. Children enjoy a substantial snack which they often help to prepare. The planning of activities and snacks is led by the children to very much reflect their interests and tastes. At Moston Lane, we promote and celebrate the love of learning, high aspirations, and standards. The school believes that everyone can achieve. However, there may become a time in your child’s education where they need some additional help or support for some or all of their time at school. At Moston Lane, we embrace new technology to enhance your child’s learning. The school is dedicated to ensuring your child is safe when using technology online and e-safety is embedded in the children’s education. We want our parents and children to improve their understanding of e-safety issues so they can learn to use the internet safely and responsibly you would like to register your child for a place in our Nursery, please call the school office to collect an application form. We will contact you during the summer term, before your child is due to start nursery, to let you know if your child has been offered a place. We do not admit children on a ‘first-come, first-served basis. If you are allocated a place at Moston Lane Nursery this does not guarantee a reception place at Moston Lane Primary School. When your child is due to start Reception you will be contacted by Manchester City Council who will give you details of how to apply online. You must apply to Manchester City Council before the deadline, which is usually in January after your child has started Nursery. School places for children in Reception to Year 6 are dealt with by Manchester City Council’s Admissions Team. Our planned admission number is 60 children per year group. We cannot admit children to take us above that number, unless under the direction of the Local Authority. When you apply for a place, your child will be placed on a waiting list. This is managed by the Local Authority, to ensure fair access for all children. If a place becomes available, it will be offered to the next child on the waiting list. If you wish to appeal for a place at Moston Lane this must be via the Local Authority Integrated Admission team. You know your children best and we want to ensure that we are providing your children with the best experiences possible at Moston Lane. If your child has developed a personal interest in something, please come in and share this with staff as we will try to provide your child with the opportunity to explore this interest at school. For example, if they have enjoyed looking for minibeasts at the weekend we could plan for learning experiences linked to Spring. Your child may have visited somewhere over the weekend and if we are aware of this we can plan for opportunities for your child to share their experiences and enhance their learning further. Anything you feel your child is particularly interested in or has enjoyed doing/visiting, please tell a member of our staff team and we will try to incorporate this into our planning. This process is ongoing throughout your child’s time in our Foundation Stage. High-quality P.E. and sport for all children at Moston Lane develop their enjoyment of sport and physical activity by promoting a passion for lifelong physical activity through shared interests with other children, schools, and clubs within the community. All children receive at least 2 hours of P.E. and sports activities each week. We also provide extra opportunities where ever possible. Extracurricular performance has been outstanding in recent years. School sports teams consistently compete in the latter stages of citywide competitions. Moston Lane attended the annual Manchester P.E. Conference which was held at the Armitage Sports Centre on Thursday 20th October. We were delighted to be one of five primary schools in Manchester to be awarded a trophy for ‘Outstanding Commitment to PE and Sport 2016’. The Moston Lane football team were also Manchester Schools winners in 2012/13, and children competing in the citywide cross country finals in the same year are now representing local running clubs. Our children make us proud by being good sportsmen gracious in victory and humble in defeat. Physical Education and games are an important part of the curriculum at EYFS, Key Stage 1, and Key Stage 2. Moston Lane recognizes that all healthy children need to be active and fit. At Moston Lane Primary School we seek to develop children’s understanding and appreciation of ICT and the way it impacts our lives. We believe it is essential to provide opportunities in all National Curriculum subject areas for children to develop their ICT capability and to use it to support their learning. ICT makes education accessible to all, irrespective of learning styles and individual needs. At Moston Lane, ICT education is provided in a safe, happy, and disciplined environment to stimulate and challenge both pupils and staff. Teaching and learning in the computer suite will be based with an emphasis on whole-class activities. New knowledge or skills will be taught by the teacher to the class and these will be reinforced by the class activities using the computers.
