  1. Our promise to our students: we will understand, challenge, and support you to do your best and realize your potential as a whole person each day and throughout life. Our mission: to challenge and support each of our students to do their best through truth and courage in learning and life. Our vision: to prepare outstanding citizens of character who will contribute to the world through their leadership, their commitment to service, and their understanding that we are all responsible for the future of our communities. On this site, you will get a sense of our programs' depth and breadth in academics and beyond. You will be introduced—perhaps for the first time—to the International Baccalaureate and the Round Square Conference of Schools, two aspects of GNS which set us apart and of which we are justifiably proud. You will discover the range of co-curricular opportunities available to our students—the greatness of small. The traditional values that make up our motto—Do your best through truth and courage—have well-established roots at Glenlyon Norfolk School. In 1913, a pair of enterprising British women founded Norfolk House School, an all-girls school on our Pemberton Woods Campus. Miss Atkins and Miss McDermott were dedicated to a rigorous education in academics, arts, and values. Some 20 years later, Glenlyon Preparatory School for boys was established on our Beach Campus location by an equally committed and gifted educator, Major Ian Simpson. In 1986, the schools joined together to share their philosophies and resources in a cohesive approach to fostering their students' futures from Kindergarten through Grade 12. Ever responsive to changing needs and a changing world, GNS has continued to evolve. That evolution is grounded on values that act as a touchstone for our decisions and guide our teaching approach. These values include truth, courage, caring, individuality, and community. GNS has a long-standing history of building bright futures. For over 100 years, our graduates have spanned the globe furthering their studies at esteemed universities. In large part, our students' success is due to our GNS family—the exceptional faculty and enthusiastic students—and our IB curriculum. Each child holds our attention at GNS, a co-educational, university preparatory school that is firmly rooted in the International Baccalaureate (IB) values and the Round Square values. As one of only 5% of IB schools in Canada authorized to offer the full continuum of IB programs, GNS is proud of its unique 'IB Advantage': a 21st-Century approach that educates the whole child and creates global thinkers. GNS offers 5- and 7-day Family Boarding options for students who are not Victoria's residents and provides an extensive co-curricular program. GNS is comprised of two locations, three schools, but one shared philosophy. A magical waterfront setting in Oak Bay is home to our Junior School. Young students in Junior Kindergarten through Grade 5 learn at a school where the beach is their playground and sometimes even their classroom. The grounds include the original home of architect Francis Rattenbury. At the center of the campus, this gracious, historical landmark hosts the library, music room, and offices. Classrooms, the gym, and the art room are housed in other buildings around the campus. Nestled in the Pemberton Woods Campus's six acres are the Glenlyon Norfolk Middle (Grades 6–8) and Senior (Grades 9–12) Schools. Buildings are connected by pathways that lead through small gardens, giving the campus a peaceful, university-like feeling. Facilities on-site range from a 340-seat performing arts hall to art, music, band rooms, turf field gymnasium, fitness center libraries, classrooms, and labs for science and information technology. Though separate, the Middle and Senior Schools share some facilities and programs, combining the advantages of age-appropriate approaches with an overall sense of community. The foundation of the GNS student experience is the International Baccalaureate (IB) Programme. Comprised of three separate but complementary strands—the Primary Years Programme (PYP), the Middle Years Programme (MYP), and the Diploma Programme (DP)—this modern, inquiry-based approach to learning is designed to enable students of all abilities to find success in their studies and to develop the skills necessary to lead happy and rewarding lives. As an IB World Continuum school, we pride ourselves on delivering a program that ensures students from Junior Kindergarten to Grade 12 learn foundation skills at a challenging level enabling them to develop higher-level thinking skills such as research, analysis, and synthesis. Our committed, expert and compassionate teachers put our students first and work as a team with parents to make sure that we approach students as individuals to learn to do their best through truth and courage. Welcome to the Beach Drive Campus! Located on the oceanfront in heritage buildings, our Junior Kindergarten to Grade 5 classrooms are beautiful examples of the best of learning in action. This beautiful location is enhanced by our curricula' quality, the passion of our teachers, and our students' energy and involvement. Having been a student at GNS, along with my cousins and three sisters, I was delighted to send my three children here. Subsequently, my daughter came to teach at GNS and has since enrolled her two girls. We feel lucky to have such a strong connection to this great school through the generations. The Middle School heartbeats very much with a sense of vitality and passion as our students take steps towards finding out who they are, what they can do to make a difference, and their part in their personal growth and development. We are firm believers in placing our students right at the center. Middle School is an excellent place for this to happen. It offers a safe, nurturing, and wholly positive environment where students can enjoy what they do and have fun learning, knowing that this sense of enjoyment is just what helps to make us a particular part of the GNS community. The Senior School is a unique and special place that offers a wide variety of opportunities for our students. I hope the following pages give you a sense of how great it is to be a GNS student and encourage you to explore further. We are always happy to welcome visitors to our school.

  4. Norfolk House School is an independent school in Birmingham for boys and girls between 3 and 11 years of age which prides itself upon academic excellence. The School occupies a beautiful period house which retains much of its original homely atmosphere. It is located on the elegant and leafy Calthorpe Estate, just a few minutes drive from Birmingham city center. We limit our intake, ensuring that class numbers are small enough to allow close personal attention to be given to every pupil, an approach which is reflected in our excellent examination results. The standards of work at Norfolk House School are very high. Our teaching methods uphold traditional values, emphasizing the core areas of English and Mathematics as the essential basis for learning, whilst introducing innovation to further motivate our young learners. Our pupils consistently perform very well in examinations for entry to the many excellent local authority grammar schools in Birmingham and prestigious independent senior schools, the vast majority being offered places at their school of choice. We aim to impart not only a first-rate academic education but also a complete social education that emphasizes good manners, mutual respect, and self-discipline. Norfolk House School is a Christian, non-denominational school, however, our pupils represent a variety of cultures and faiths. At Norfolk House School we are very proud of our outstanding academic record. Being committed to high standards as well as having equally high expectations, our innovative approach encourages the pupils to become not only well-motivated and successful learners but also interesting, rounded individuals. At Norfolk House School we seek to cultivate the minds of our pupils through a shared enthusiasm for diverse subjects and by broadening the curriculum to foster curiosity about the wider world through numerous challenges beyond the classroom. We want our pupils to feel inspired by their learning and eager to find out more. Our caring, family environment enables our staff to forge strong relationships with the pupils. It is only when they feel happy, safe, and relaxed that they can truly thrive and fulfill their potential. We delight in the way our pupils develop as confident and independent learners, each achieving to the height of their ability. The School’s reputation for academic excellence at 11+ is firmly established, as reflected in its examination results, and its strengths in the teaching of mathematics and English are highly valued. Our pupils leave us cherishing traditional values such as good manners, respect for others, and kindness, fully prepared for the next stage of their journey. Our ethos comes from what we believe in – passionately: that each child is an individual to be nurtured that a happy and caring environment is the bedrock of a child’s development that good manners and respect for others are values which should never be compromised that working hard and playing hard go hand-in-hand that cultural and religious diversity is to be celebrated and that education is an exciting, life-long process which starts with us here at Norfolk House School. In preparing Norfolk House School children for a happy and successful life, we aim: To provide all our children with opportunities to achieve their academic potential. To develop an enquiring mind within a family environment where they feel valued and which addresses all aspects of the children’s spiritual, moral, social, and cultural development. To promote an atmosphere where they feel fulfilled, confident, and emotionally literate. To equip our pupils to grow as caring and responsible citizens who will accept responsibility and make a positive contribution to the community and society. To encourage a lifelong enthusiasm for learning. To understand the importance of manners, respect for each other, and the value of working and living together productively. To maintain an environment in which children are safe, happy, and motivated. To encourage mutual respect, tolerance, and understanding.

  6. Since our 1728 founding, Norfolk Academy has existed for the transformative education and edification of children (and families) in Hampton Roads. As Virginia's oldest independent school, we carry that historic mission into today, even as we continually reevaluate and improve our purpose, performance, and the lasting effect we have on our students and our region. As a private school with a public purpose, Norfolk Academy strives to educate our students through relationships with our regional partners. Trusted and reciprocally empowering relationships form the bedrock of the Norfolk Academy experience. The inspiring relationships we forge with one another underlie our college-prep curriculum, our innovative programming, and our time-honored traditions. No exciting discovery, no personal breakthrough, no learning epiphany occurs at the Academy without the genuine, inspiring, and perspective-shifting relationships that students purposefully build with one another and with their teachers—who also serve as trusted coaches and wise advisors. The relationships we begin building in grade one—and that grow in ardor and complexity through grade 12—make possible both the authentic kindness and our students' outsized accomplishments. That is why years after graduation, Norfolk Academy students still count their friends and teachers here as the largest influences on their entire lives. Few schools have thrived for almost 300 years, like Norfolk Academy. And it is the clear and ringing timbre of relationships you find at Norfolk Academy that continues to demonstrate our relevance today. Norfolk Academy is a coeducational private school serving grades 1-12 in three divisions: Lower, Middle, and Upper. The school has a rich history and a well-defined philosophy. The school is located in Norfolk, Virginia, on a beautiful 64-acre campus. The students who attend Norfolk Academy come from all areas of Hampton Roads (Chesapeake, Norfolk, Portsmouth, Suffolk, and Virginia Beach), the Eastern Shore of Virginia, and northeastern North Carolina. The Faculty and Staff are highly qualified and dedicated to ensuring that their students achieve their highest potential. The school encourages its students to achieve in all areas. Norfolk Academy boasts a strong sports program and an exciting arts program. By offering these varied opportunities, the school helps each student in our diverse community learn to appreciate and enjoy the full spectrum of quality education. The Norfolk Academy is a college preparatory, coeducational day school that strives to help its students develop the maturity of mind, body, and character. We hope to engender an awareness and appreciation of intellectual, aesthetic, and moral excellence in a setting that offers well-developed programs in the academic disciplines and fine arts, athletics, and service to others. We aim to prepare students to become ultimately useful and responsible citizens of a democracy. We strive to make them aware of their role in creating a just society. We are committed to the spiritual and ethical values of the Judeo-Christian heritage. We envision that these will become a part of the being of each member of the Norfolk Academy community. Norfolk Academy seeks to offer a coordinated program for students, building and expanding on knowledge and experience from grades one through twelve, encouraging responsible participation in various school activities, providing opportunities for leadership training, and facilitating interaction with the community beyond the school. We are committed to the principles of academic freedom. We trust that students and faculty will be stimulated to continue teaching, learning, exploring, thinking practically and creatively, and moving toward wisdom and understanding. Aware of a tradition of academic excellence that dates from 1728 and sensitive to the need for meeting change, the Academy attempts to maintain high standards, both academic and ethical, for students and faculty. We believe that the honor system is the embodiment of these ideals. We aim to provide a balanced program for individual growth and guide and measure each student's progress. We are committed to the enrollment of boys and girls who show promise of intellectual curiosity and come from families of varied social, economic, religious, ethnic, and racial backgrounds. We believe that teachers should be knowledgeable in their fields and understand and enjoy the ways young people learn and grow. We believe that these teachers' interests and talents should enable them to assume responsibilities outside the classroom in guidance, athletics, and activities. The school seeks to provide equipment and facilities that create an atmosphere where growing children may participate actively in their mental and physical development. We strive to encourage students, faculty, and families to work together to assist students in arriving at the personal assessment of themselves and challenging them to reach their true potential in a world of accelerating change. 7. 8. Our promise to our students: we will work to understand, challenge and support you to do your best and realize your potential as a whole person each day and throughout life. Our mission: to challenge and support each of our students to do their best through truth and courage in learning and life. Our vision: to prepare outstanding citizens of character who will contribute to the world through their leadership, their commitment to service, and their understanding that we are all responsible for the future of our communities. On this site, you will get a sense of the depth and breadth of our programs in academics and beyond. In 1913, a pair of enterprising British women founded Norfolk House School, an all-girls school on what is now our Pemberton Woods Campus. Miss Atkins and Miss McDermott were dedicated to a rigorous education in academics, arts, and values. Some 20 years later, Glenlyon Preparatory School for boys was established on the location of our Beach Campus by an equally committed and gifted educator, Major Ian Simpson. In 1986, the schools joined together to share their philosophies and resources in a cohesive approach to fostering the futures of their students from Kindergarten through Grade 12. Ever responsive to changing needs and a changing world, GNS has continued to evolve. That evolution is grounded on values that act as a touchstone for our decisions and guide our approach to teaching. These values include truth, courage, caring, individuality, and community. GNS has a long-standing history of building bright futures. For over 100 years, our graduates have spanned the globe furthering their studies at esteemed universities. The success of our students is due, in large part, to our GNS family—the exceptional faculty and enthusiastic students—and our IB curriculum. Each child holds our attention at GNS, a co-educational, university preparatory school that is firmly rooted in the values of the International Baccalaureate (IB) and the Round Square. As one of only 5% of IB schools in Canada authorized to offer the full continuum of IB programs, GNS is proud of its unique 'IB Advantage': a 21st-Century approach that educates the whole child and creates global thinkers. GNS offers 5- and 7-day Family Boarding options for students who are not residents of Victoria and provides an extensive co-curricular program. Nestled in the six acres of the Pemberton Woods Campus are the Glenlyon Norfolk Middle (Grades 6–8) and Senior (Grades 9–12) Schools. Buildings are connected by pathways that lead through small gardens, giving the campus a peaceful, university-like feeling. Facilities on-site range from a 340-seat performing arts hall to art, music, and band rooms turf field gymnasium fitness center libraries classrooms, and labs for science and information technology. Our committed, expert and compassionate teachers put our students first and work as a team with parents to make sure that we approach students as individuals so that they learn to do their best through truth and courage. Welcome to the Beach Drive Campus! Located on the oceanfront in heritage buildings, our Junior Kindergarten to Grade 5 classrooms are wonderful examples of the best of learning in action. This beautiful location is enhanced by the quality of our curricula, the passion of our teachers, and the energy and involvement of our students. Having been a student at GNS along with my cousins and three sisters, I was delighted to send my three children here. Subsequently, my daughter came to teach at GNS and has since enrolled her two girls in the school. We feel lucky to have such a strong connection to this amazing school through the generations. The Middle School heartbeats very much with a sense of vitality and passion as our students take steps towards finding out who they are, what they can do to make a difference, and the part they can play in their personal growth and development. We are firm believers in placing our students right at the center. The Middle School is a great place for this to happen as it offers a safe, nurturing, and wholly positive environment where students can enjoy what they do and have fun learning, knowing that this sense of enjoyment is just what helps to make us a special part of the GNS community. The Senior School is a very unique and special place that offers a rich variety of opportunities for our students. I hope the following pages give you a sense of how great it is to be a GNS student and encourage you to explore further. We are always happy to welcome visitors to our school. View full school
