  1. We have been a place for dreamers and doers, artists and scientists, idealists and realists from the very beginning. This is a university without walls, where no one is worried about fitting in — just standing out. UAB is your launching pad for a 21st-century career, with opportunities you will not find anywhere else. Want to be in a place where something is always going on while still experiencing a tight campus community? There is no need to settle for A or B when you can have both at UAB. UAB had established mission, vision, and values statements before the initiation of this round of strategic planning. During its deliberations, the Strategic Planning Council reviewed and revised these "directional strategies." The updated statements are below. One University inspiring and empowering the creation of knowledge that changes the world. UAB serves students, patients, the community, and the global need for discovery, knowledge dissemination, education, creativity, and the application of groundbreaking solutions. We are a leader among comprehensive public urban research universities with academic medical centers. When it comes down to it, you are coming to college for an education. Oh, there is no denying that the culture and athletics and student life are great (and very important), but, in the end, you are looking for a degree and a plan for the future. Conveniently, UAB happens to have all of those things – except for the plan – but we can help you build that yourself. We offer more than 115 areas of study, including a few that you cannot find anywhere else in the state or even the region. And you definitely cannot find our top-notch, field-tested, nationally renowned, actually-really-nice-in-person faculty anywhere else in the state. Mostly because, well, they are here. UAB embodies a spirit of discovery that advances knowledge, solves real-world problems, and drives economic development. Our research faculty ranks among the nation's best-funded and are noted for exceptional mentoring and training — from undergraduate researchers to post-doctoral fellows. This work is supported by more than $430 million in sponsored research funds each year, and it is conducted in the departments of 10 schools, 24 university-wide research centers, UAB hospitals and clinics and field sites by faculty, fellows, and students collaborating among themselves and with others around the globe. Research at UAB spans the spectrum and mingles disciplines to investigate, reveal, and apply the knowledge that changes individuals' lives and the fates of communities. We do this to provide answers. Solutions. Hope. The mission of the UAB Office of Service-Learning and Undergraduate Research is to connect UAB students, faculty, and community nonprofit partners to enrich student academic learning, promote civic engagement, and to strengthen and support our local and global communities. Since 2007, UAB's Office of Service-Learning and Undergraduate Research has focused on promoting service-learning courses and other opportunities that integrate academic learning and civic engagement to benefit both students and the community. The Office of Service-Learning and Undergraduate Research is a bridge between the instructional and service missions of the University, enabling students and faculty to apply classroom knowledge and research with community partners to address community issues. The Office of Service-Learning also supports and models the UAB Values of collaboration and community involvement. UAB is a Carnegie Community Engaged institution because of its commitment to curricular engagement through service-learning and support for collaborative interactions with the community and related scholarship for the mutually beneficial exchange, exploration, and application of knowledge, information, and resources. Since 2008, UAB has been a member of the President's Higher Education Community Service Honor Roll for exemplary service to our communities. The Honor Roll is the highest federal recognition a college or university can achieve to commit to service-learning and civic engagement. UAB Service Learning and Undergraduate Research helps faculty integrate hands-on service with classroom curriculum while serving as a liaison for faculty, students, and community partners. With a focus on a quality experience for all parties involved, UAB Service Learning addresses concerns about academic rigor, time constraints, and liability to ensure opportunities are fully utilized. The University of Alabama at Birmingham (UAB) traces its roots to the 1859 founding of the Medical College of Alabama and the 1936 opening of the Birmingham Extension Center of the University of Alabama. In 1945 the Medical College of Alabama was moved from Tuscaloosa, and the University's Medical Center was founded in Birmingham. In 1954 the Extension Center was moved to a newly constructed facility adjacent to the Medical Center, bringing together the university's two academic components for the first time in Birmingham. Later, in November of 1966, the Extension Center and the Medical Center were administratively merged to form the "The University of Alabama in Birmingham," an organizational component of the University of Alabama (in Tuscaloosa). In 1969 UAB became an independent institution, one of the autonomous universities within the newly created three-campus University of Alabama System. Today, UAB is a comprehensive urban university with a nationally recognized academic health center. UAB is the only public, a four-year degree-granting university in the state's largest metropolitan area. UAB is the largest research institution in Alabama and is the largest single employer in the state.

  7. Birmingham has been challenging and developing great minds for more than a century. Characterized by a tradition of innovation, research at the University has broken new ground, pushed forward the boundaries of knowledge, and impacted people's lives. We continue this tradition today and have ambitions for a future that will embed our work and recognize the Birmingham name on the international stage. Universities are never complete. They develop as new challenges and opportunities occur. At Birmingham, we innovate, push the frontiers of understanding, ask new research questions, turn theory through experiment into practice because that is what great universities do. The University grew out of the radical vision of our first Chancellor, Joseph Chamberlain. Founded in 1900, Birmingham represented a new model for higher education. This was England's first civic University, where students from all religions and backgrounds were accepted on an equal basis. The University of Birmingham was established by Queen Victoria by Royal Charter in 1900 and was the UK's first civic or 'redbrick' University. The first phase of building work on the campus was completed in 1909 under the esteemed architect Sir Aston Webb. We celebrated the centenary of those buildings in July 2009. The Council and Senate govern the University of Birmingham. It is managed by the University Executive Board, chaired by the Vice-Chancellor. Academic disciplines are organized into five academic Colleges, each of which is divided into several schools. Each College is led by a Pro-Vice-Chancellor and Head of College, who also sits on the University Executive Board. The University's Professional Services, located both centrally in Corporate Services and the Colleges, work in partnership with academics to support the academic mission of the University. Professional Services are led by the Registrar & Secretary. More than a century after the University of Birmingham was established to unlock the global potential of a progressive city; we remain committed to ensuring our national and global influence while remaining at the heart of the city's renaissance. We bring together the people and resources to tackle the significant challenges of our time. We draw on and give back to the region through our research, education, and global reach and reputation. As an institution dedicated to learning, we contribute to the growth and spread of knowledge and ideas that will help transform the world, work with partners to take on the big questions, find and implement solutions and make a difference locally, nationally, and globally. This purposeful, pragmatic, and pioneering approach, focused on the common good, has enabled us to redefine the civic University, becoming the standard against which others are measured. This Strategic Framework 2015-20 charts a course that will allow the University of Birmingham to succeed. Our students' quality, and the creativity and leadership of our people, alongside our willingness to make bold and sometimes tough choices, will enable us to realize our goals. Through this sustained original thinking, our success will be seen in the continued growth of our impact and reputation, and that of the region. View full university

Our reputation for excellence means the University is a popular choice for international students, who join us from more than 60 countries. We are committed to providing the best facilities for all our students and are investing £100 million in a comprehensive package of improvements that will secure our reputation for excellence. University College Birmingham is a specialist further and higher education institution, offering vocational programs in specialist fields at a wide range of levels, from apprenticeships to postgraduate degrees. Our mission is to promote and provide the opportunity for participation in the learning process by those with the ambition and commitment to succeed and maintain a learning community that meets our students' diverse needs, the economy, and society at large. The Enterprise Hive is here to nurture and support our students who wish to set up their own business and promote the entrepreneurial spirit throughout the University, encouraging independence and innovation. Small and Medium-Sized Enterprises (SMEs) employ more than half the UK workforce, and some £16 billion is generated annually by cities with the best growth prospects for SMEs. Birmingham has been recognized as one of the top six locations for new business start-ups, and UCB is at the forefront of promoting sustainable growth in the UK's biggest city outside London. Through the work of Enterprise Hive, the University is committed to supporting students who wish to set up their businesses. An entrepreneurial spirit is promoted throughout the institution, encouraging independent thought, collaborative practice, and innovation. Students benefit from various workshops delivered by experienced professionals and tailored mentoring, networking opportunities, and one-to-one support from the team in the Business School. With more than 7,500 students enrolled in hugely diverse courses, the modern-day University College Birmingham is unrecognizable from the small Victorian classes to which its origins can be traced. Today, hospitality managers, aviation executives, dazzling hairdressers and makeup artists, educators, chefs, bakers, tourism industry experts, and creative entrepreneurs learn life skills at a university hailed for its vocational training and academic achievements, and cultural diversity. The institution has earmarked more than £90 million on the now completed Phase 1 development, known as McIntyre House, and the neighboring Phase 2 building in the Jewellery Quarter. The ambitious projects represent a bold statement of intent beyond the dreams of Birmingham's early educational pioneers. There is, however, a common theme. Then, as now, cookery was of the moment and students and employers in the 21st century owe a debt of gratitude to municipal reformers such as Joseph Chamberlain. He backed the cookery cause at UCB's forebear, Birmingham Municipal Technical School, in the 19th century. A report in the Birmingham Daily Post of November 7, 1874, recalls a meeting of the Birmingham School Board, presided over by the then chairman, one J Chamberlain. The Board was told that the Education and School Management Committee had considered the "advisability of introducing instruction in practical cookery and household work as part of the ordinary school course." The committee suggested "experimental buildings" should be built at two schools to replicate the "ordinary size and ordinary character found in the cottages of working people." There should be "no special appliances for cooking," and the girls would be taught to cook with "ordinary utensils, at the ordinary fires, the ordinary food of the class to which they belonged." It was a visionary, albeit no-frills, educational development. The fledgling culinary arts were sparking broader interest. By the 1880s, the Midland School of Cookery occupied a "large apartment" with a larder, scullery, and a gas stove at the Midland Institute in Birmingham. Up to 100 women and professional cooks attended lessons in "high-class" cookery five mornings a week. By 1891, cookery classes were delivered at the Birmingham and Midland School of Cookery at 117 Colmore Row, focusing on "high-class cookery, cottage cookery, and vegetarian cookery." Archives suggest domestic cookery classes were taught throughout the First World War at the Municipal Technical School, which became the Central Technical College in 1927. As the institution added new courses and changed its focus, there were numerous further name changes, including, in the 1950s, the College of Food and Technology, featuring a department of bakery and domestic science. A year later, it was renamed again and became the Birmingham College of Food and Domestic Arts. The College, which had operated from nine city and suburban schools, came under one roof in 1968 when the Duke of Edinburgh opened a new £1.5 million building on Summer Row. The building was designed to house up to 1,000 students and included a hostel for 57 female students boarding on a dinner, bed, and breakfast basis. By now, there were five significant departments – hotel and catering bakery, domestic arts residential child care, and nursery nursing. Regulations stipulated that "stiletto heels must NOT be worn in any part of the College." Radios, record players, and tape recorders were also banned. In the late 1980s, the institution's name was changed to the Birmingham College of Food, Tourism and Creative Studies to represent the course provision better. A watershed moment arrived on April 1, 1993, when the College left local authority control and joined the newly formed further education sector under Principal Eddie McIntyre. Dr. McIntyre and his senior management team took full advantage of the new independence to increase recruitment, develop the curriculum, and invest in the facilities and College estate. Significant developments included constructing the £25 million new halls of residence The Maltings, built at the former Davenports Brewery site in Bath Row. The complex provided more than 800 study bedrooms and was completed in three phases: 1996, 1998, and 2003. In Newhall Street, Richmond House was acquired as part of the institution's expansion and opened as a dedicated center for further education in 2001. In 2002, the institution transferred to the higher education sector, providing outstanding higher and further education courses with a strong vocational focus. University College Birmingham was officially born in November 2007 when the Privy Council granted taught degree awarding powers. Full university status followed in December 2012 as part of diversifying the university sector and improving student choice. With many of its degrees accredited by the University of Birmingham, UCB has undergone a remarkable transformation and values its culturally diverse, outward-facing global perspective. It is a truly international university that delivers specialist courses to 900 overseas students from 65 countries, such as China, Pakistan, and Saudi Arabia. UCB has amassed an impressive array of accolades and awards over the years. The lion's share of recruitment is now in higher education, comprising 70% of UCB's intake than 30% on further education courses. Students can study everything from certificates and diplomas to degrees and postgraduate qualifications. However, the institution's defining ethos has remained a constant – to give students, regardless of their background, the opportunity to succeed and to offer, in the motto of the University's coat of arms, "service before self." Characterized by a tradition of innovation, research at the University has broken new ground, pushed forward the boundaries of knowledge, and impacted people's lives. We continue this tradition today and have ambitions for a future that will embed our work and recognize the Birmingham name on the international stage.

However, the institution's defining ethos has remained a constant – to give students, regardless of their background, the opportunity to succeed and to offer, in the motto of the University's coat of arms, "service before self."
