Welcome to our school. We want it to reflect what a fantastic place our school is for children to learn, develop and play. We are a diverse community of learners, and we emphasize excellent progress, whatever each child’s starting point or circumstances. We use our values to guide our day-to-day work. Infant School and Junior School decided to federate and become South Harringay School. Our federation took effect on September 1st, 2016. It has allowed us to build on the excellence found in both schools, by bringing the knowledge, skills, and commitment. Through an inclusive and creative curriculum, and by valuing the uniqueness of every child, we will secure high standards and excellent outcomes for all. British values are democracy, the rule of law, individual liberty, and the mutual respect for and tolerance of those with different faiths and beliefs and for those without faith. In EYFS we focus on children’s self-confidence and self-awareness and people and communities. (PSED/UW) We help children to develop a positive sense of themselves and to develop their self-knowledge, self-esteem and increase their confidence in their abilities In key stage 1, the PSHE Curriculum (Cambridgeshire Personal Development Programme) teaches the importance of making safe choices and encouraging children to develop independence and freedom to make choices for themselves. The key stage 2 PSHE Curriculum is taught through Philosophy for children and the Cristopher Winter Project materials on Relationship Education and Drugs Education. They teach the importance of making safe choices and encouraging children to develop independence and freedom to make choices for themselves. We aim to enhance children’s understanding of different faiths and beliefs by participating in a range of celebrations throughout the year. Children have the opportunity to visit different places of worship such as a local church and mosque to further develop their understanding. The Haringey RE Syllabus is taught across key stages one and two. The PSHE curriculum encourages children to be aware of and celebrate their differences and similarities. We have an ethos of inclusivity and tolerance in our setting, where views, faiths, cultures, and races are valued and where we encourage children to engage with their wider community. Our school values contribute to the promoting and teaching of British Values throughout all year groups. Children nominate each other to be ‘values champions’ and are recognized by their classmates in assemblies. Our Nursery provides a happy, relaxed, and stimulating environment in which children, through their investigations, play, and talk, will gain the best foundations for future learning. We follow the Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS) curriculum. Through structured play and practical activities, children can develop the characteristics of effective learning which are how children engage with other people and their environment – playing and exploring, active learning, and creating and thinking critically. At South Harringay School we are committed to helping every child to reach their full potential, including those pupils with Special Educational Needs and Disabilities (SEND). We aim to provide an inclusive environment and welcome pupils with SEND into the school community. We recognize that a significant proportion of children will have SEN at some time in their school career. Many of these pupils may require help throughout their time in school, whilst others may need a little extra support for a short period to overcome more temporary needs. At South Harringay, we assess our pupils to keep track of what they have learned and the progress they are making. In line with the new curriculum and raised expectations, which focuses very much upon ensuring that children acquire a deeper breadth and understanding of the skills and concepts they learn. Rather than ‘moving up’ through phases, the emphasis is on ‘mastering’ a phase, therefore enabling children to gain a better understanding. Welcome to North Harringay Primary, a friendly and inclusive learning community with the highest expectations and aspirations for all of our pupils. We want our children to enjoy their early years of education and to move on to secondary school full of confidence and enthusiasm for learning. To help us to achieve this we focus on brilliant basics – ensuring the children learn the key skills they need to master the curriculum – combined with magical touches - a rich program of educational visits, creative arts, sport, and topical discussions. Our Question of the Week every Monday encourages the children and their families to debate key issues and philosophical conundrums. Our aim is for all of our children to be curious, critical, committed, creative, and cooperative learners. North Harringay Primary School is a primary school for children between the ages of 3 and 11 years old. We are situated within a very diverse local population and our children come from a rich variety of cultures, languages, religions, and ethnic groups. We consider this diversity to be an asset, which enriches the educational experiences we offer our children. What it means to be British has never been universally agreed upon and probably never should be. In a diverse, multicultural setting such as North Harringay Primary School, a community composed of families originating from every corner of the globe, we want to encourage our learners, all of whom are growing up British, to better understand the society they live in and their place within it. In 2014, the Coalition Government issued guidance on what it called “fundamental British values”, defined as ‘democracy, the rule of law, individual liberty, and mutual respect and tolerance of those with different faiths and beliefs as well as an understanding of British history heritage and traditions. At North Harringay Primary School we believe that all these ideas are important and valuable, not just in Britain but for many people all around the world. This document outlines the various ways in which we maintain and uphold them. North Harringay’s Personal Development Curriculum emphasizes the importance of learners gaining an understanding of how decisions are made at a local and national, including the work of Parliament and councils and how their members are elected. It emphasizes the asking and answering of open questions and throughout our curriculum, we encourage rigorous debate and discussion of important issues. North Harringay Primary School has a clear and consistent behavior policy based on a set of “golden rules.” The “going for gold” system in classes and three-stage system for escalation of more serious incidents reinforce these rules and teachers are encouraged to agree on an interpretation of the golden rules with their class at the start of the year. In this way, young people are encouraged to take ownership of the rules and, by extension, their behavior. The “World Around Us” strand of the school’s Personal Development Curriculum emphasizes the systems and structures that keep society functioning effectively, including an understanding of individual rights and responsibilities, our duties before the law, and how laws are made. Legal issues surrounding substance abuse including illegal drugs as well as knife crime and sexual relationships are discussed in Year 6 to prepare learners for the more sophisticated and potentially more intimidating environment they will face at secondary school. North Harringay is an extremely diverse school and the families that form our communities represent many different religions, cultures, and belief systems. We are committed to celebrating those differences through our curriculum, visits, and visitors to the school, and international cultural events. We follow the Haringey SACRE’s agreed syllabus for RE which encourages understanding of the different major faiths and religions around the world. The RE and PSHE curricula both promote a thorough exploration of how both religious and non-religious people approach questions of meaning, ethics, and philosophy. Children at North Harringay visit a range of places of worship throughout their time at the school to gain the first-hand experience of other religious beliefs and speakers from different religious communities are regularly invited to speak in assemblies.
