Pontyberem Primary School is located in the heart of the Gwendraeth Valley and between the towns of Carmarthen and Llanelli. The present school was opened in Pontyberem in September 1984 when the Infants School in Llannon Road and the Junior School on the village square were closed. Previously, the building was used as a Secondary Modern School. From the outset, the school has established itself and grown to be an integral part of the community. We are a Category A school where the majority of the curriculum is taught through the medium of Welsh. Here, approximately 200 pupils are receiving full-time education. We offer large playgrounds, a football and rugby field, tennis/netball courts, and well-resourced classrooms to enhance learning for every individual at Pontyberem Primary School. Over the years the school has received much praise and commendation from numerous agencies and individuals. The School has been inspected three times by Her Majesty’s School Inspectors and the following quote is from the H.M.I. report on an inspection held at the school in January 1990. “The school is an active community which works conscientiously. Pupils are educated in a warm and secure environment. The generally favorable facilities are well exploited to provide a good range of learning experiences. Firm foundations have been laid in developing a broad and balanced curriculum and in extending pupils’ use of both languages as effective media of communication. The school succeeds in eliciting pupils’ best efforts and according to the ability they obtain generally good standards.” In October 1996 the inspector’s report was again highly favorable. They said:- “This is a good school. Pupils’ achievements in each core subject of the National Curriculum in KS1 and KS2 and several foundation subjects are good and in some aspects, they are very good. The quality of provision is good. Teaching generally across the school has many strengths. Lessons are characterized by good relationships between teachers and pupils and between pupils. Lessons have a good structure and in the majority of cases, have a good balance of class and group activities. Pupils benefit from a good range of interesting and stimulating experiences, the use of a variety and range of resources, and good support. The school has a good ethos. Its aims are based on firm principles and their effective implementation is manifest in its daily life and work. The contribution it makes to the spiritual, moral, social, and cultural development of pupils is good. There is a particularly strong emphasis on many aspects of the Welsh heritage and traditions.” The school received another successful inspection in October 2002. The inspectors said:- “This is a good school with very good features. It offers pupils a rich curriculum and everyone associated with the school is aware that they are part of a supportive, caring community. The good and very good teaching is one of the main strengths of the school. Pupils’ standards of achievement are good across the curriculum. The head offers the school very good leadership. He provides clear direction and a sense of purpose. Pupils’ spiritual, moral, social, and cultural development is very good. Pupils collaborate well together and standards of behavior are very good. The staff offer praise and support and their relationship with the pupils are very good. The quality of the learning environment provided for the pupils is of a high standard.” In our most recent inspection report in November 2008, the inspectors stated:- “This is a good school with outstanding features. At Plas-y-Felin Primary School we strive to enable every child to achieve their potential. We try to enthuse staff, pupils, and parents with heightened aspirations in a caring, supportive and safe environment. The school has two buildings, consisting of the Foundation Phase and Key Stage 2 phases. The Foundation Phase department building surrounds an open, padded patio area and consists of 4 large teaching areas and a large hall that is shared by the whole school. The organization of these areas reflects the learning needs of the different age groups taught. We refer to these teaching areas Nursery/Reception/Year 1/Year 2 Bases, as well as outdoor areas for each classroom. Also, we have an external classroom and a Community Room. The Key Stage 2 department building has a large hall shared by the whole school. Off the hall are 3 wings that house Year 3 (7-8-year-old - Gwindy), Year 4 (8-9-year-old - Pandy), Year 5, and Year 6 (9-11-year-old - Celyn). Additionally, there is a Nurture Room and an ICT Suite housing a variety of equipment to allow learners to become more digitally competent. It's been a good year once again for Eco concerns at Plas-y-Felin. We have been maintaining our Eco standards throughout the day by making sure we turn off anything that doesn't need to be on, saving water by turning off taps, and keeping the school tidy. We have been learning about Eco issues in our class topics and making sure that we continue to be Eco friendly in all that we do. We now have an adventure playground for the infant department. This was to help promote our Healthy School status through active play. We have lots of bicycles and pedal power helping our children to exercise and enjoy the outdoor areas. The members of the Gardening Group in the juniors have worked very hard to get the area ready for the play equipment, transporting lots of bark and making sure that everything was level and set for the infants to use. All of the Zones are educational and while in school the children access these safely with no adverts or pop-ups appearing on the screens due to our specific security filter system. However, adverts pop-ups or links to further sites may occur at home when using some areas. Plasnewydd Primary School is not responsible for this and we strongly recommend that parental supervision is used when children are using the Internet. We hope that all of the children enjoy this zone and have rewarding experiences from it. After experiencing all four seasons in a couple of hours down at the lake we arrived back at Hillcrest for lunch, then an afternoon at the Challenge Course and a spot of shooting. Our day concluded with some singing, dancing, story-telling and of course, an evening around the campfire wouldn't be complete without some delicious toasted marshmallows!! Plascrug Community Primary School is an LEA maintained School situated in the beautiful, coastal town of Aberystwyth, Ceredigion. The majority of the children who attend the school are from the town itself, however, during recent years, due to the excellent reputation the school has earned, many pupils now travel from further distances i.e. up to 40 miles radius. There are approximately 400 pupils at the school ranging from 3-11 years of age. Classes are divided into Year groups and there are parallel classes of mixed ability running throughout the school and class sizes vary from 20 to 30 in number. The Nursery classes operate on a part-time basis (a.m. / p.m.) for 3-year-olds, and full-time when they turn 4 years of age. Pupils enter mainstream Reception classes in the September after their 4th birthday. The school community is a cosmopolitan one approximately a quarter of our pupils are from countries overseas. In all, there are 38 countries represented and 27 different languages spoken at the school. We rejoice in the diversity of cultures and religions reflected at the school and in the harmony and friendship which develop among our children. At Plascrug, we aim to establish a climate within the school and classroom in which all children can develop lively, enquiring minds and learn at a pace relevant to their own experience and ability. Pupils develop competence in many skills, e.g. Numeracy, Literacy, I.C.T., and can use these skills with increased confidence, competence, understanding, and pleasure in all areas of the curriculum as they progress through the school. We believe in lifelong learning where we all learn from each other, share experiences, and discover the excitement of acquiring new knowledge and understanding together.
