We are an all-age specialist center for pupils with severe sight loss. All of our teaching staff are experienced and qualified teachers of the Visually Impaired. Our support staff is also all trained to a very high standard. We are committed to providing an exciting, stimulating, and highly differentiated learning program for all of our students and to ensuring that each child is supported to reach his or her potential. We provide both a mainstream curriculum, personalized to meet each child’s visual and learning needs, and the additional specialist subjects of braille, mobility, perceptual development, and Independent Living Skills. Every student leaves the school with a range of accreditation and qualifications to help them make their way in the world. Priestley Smith School is located on the site of Perry Beeches mainstream schools in Great Barr, Birmingham. The campus includes Perry Beeches Nursery, Infant, Junior, and Secondary schools. Our buildings are purpose-built for visually impaired students and are very well resourced to meet their needs, providing the specialist equipment they require to access the curriculum. The school strongly supports the Birmingham Curriculum Statement, a copy of which is included below, which ensures that all students receive their full curriculum entitlement and are prepared well to live in a culturally rich and diverse society. We recognize parents’ rights to withdraw their children from Religious Education and Sex and Relationships Education but ask them strongly to consider the importance of their child being well informed about these aspects to be independent, tolerant citizens, well equipped for life in society today. Any parents requesting withdrawal of students from RE or Sex and Relationships Education will be asked to discuss their concerns with the school’s senior leadership team. The school recognizes its responsibility to create a curriculum that meets the needs of pupils with severe visual impairment and which also reflects their very diverse backgrounds. Additionally, it takes into account the fact that many of our pupils have complex needs which include learning difficulties, communication difficulties, physical difficulties, and social/emotional needs. It is therefore essential that the curriculum we offer while paying full regard to national guidelines is fit for purpose in meeting this range of need. The community of Prestonfield was designed and built as a Garden Village during the early 1930s. The School, which was opened in 1931, was an architectural period piece of a considerable character possessing several interesting and unusual features. Read Write Inc (RWI) is a consistent, rigorous, and dynamic literacy program to teach EVERY child to read by the age of six. Using synthetic phonics, children quickly learn to blend letter sounds following a fun and effective program. The RWI program has been proven to be a very successful method of teaching every child to read and write using phonics. All children in the school have been assessed and have been put into groups at the appropriate level for them. Some children will follow their normal Literacy lessons due to the completion of the RWI modules.

The school is situated on the edge of the village, within the wooded valley that gives the school its name. The school was built in 1886 to serve the largely rural community and daily logs, written by past Head Teachers, tell of the routines for the children and staff. The original building comprised of three classrooms and a staff room. Over the years it has been modified to reflect the changing needs within schools. The building has been extended to include a hall/canteen and kitchen, the school office, a staff room and indoor toilets for the children. The old School House was integrated into the school building and accommodates a music and drama studio and an additional teacher space, library, the Inclusion Manager’s room used for small group work, and a foundation stage classroom. It is known as the Hudson Suite, named after a previous Head Teacher who gave 23 years’ service to the school. The grounds of the school have also been improved to include an outdoor climbing area for the foundation stage and a quiet covered area for children to use at break times, parents to shelter under, and for teachers to utilize as an outside teaching space, irrespective of the weather. Also, the school has the advantage of its large playing field that is used for a wealth of sporting and fun activities. Throughout the last hundred and thirty years the school has reflected the advances and changes in state education whilst remaining a focal point for the local community.

A great deal has happened to transform this community school in the heart of Lewisham. The commitment and talents of its staff have been fully focussed on ensuring students reach their full potential. A relentless focus on improving the standard of Teaching and Learning is at the heart of school improvement. With this in mind, the leadership team in the school has developed whole-school systems for monitoring and evaluating the performance of staff and the effectiveness of their teaching. We have revised the assessment and reporting structure in the school. There are now 4 modules over the school year, each of which ends with a revision week and then formal assessment in all subjects. We collect this tracking information and a summary of students’ achievements are reported to parents and carers in October, December, March, and July. This provides information about the progress their child is making toward their aspirational target grade in every subject and an indication of their engagement in learning. This report is used to stretch our most able students, and support and challenge those who are not making good progress. We revised the curriculum offer in Year 10 and 11. Our pathway curriculum demands that our most able students take the most challenging EBacc GCSEs, ensuring they are well prepared for A-Level qualifications and application to Russell Group Universities. The appointment of a Most Able co-ordinator in the school ensures that students predicted A and A* grades at GCSE are given the challenge and support they need to succeed. High expectations for all academically are mirrored in the work we are doing to ensure a firm but fair approach to standards and discipline, with a clear emphasis that children feel safe to learn. A strong stance is taken with students who disrupt the learning of others. High standards of courtesy and politeness are expected of students at all times, students are expected to wear the school uniform with pride and work hard at school and home. Parents are very positive about the school. We are proud of our community of parents, students, staff, and Governors, who make our school a great place to learn, work and share with our neighbors and community.

All Admissions at Poplar are managed centrally at Merton Council and follow the Merton community Schools Admission arrangements. If your child is due to start full-time school, is changing school, and/or is transferring to high school you will need to complete an application form which you can obtain from your local borough. As part of our rewards system, we use house points. On arrival at Poplar, children are put into houses: Lions, Tigers, Jaguars, and Leopards. We keep children from the same families in the same house. House points can be awarded by all staff for good work, good behavior, kindness, being polite, showing good manners, etc. Each week the points are added up and the winning team is announced in assembly and also put in the Friday Flyer. At the end of each term, the team that has won for the most weeks is awarded the House Cup. Poplar’s School Council was first set up in 2006. Our School Council represents the voice of the children. Each year voting takes place in every classroom in Key Stage 1 and 2, for the children who have campaigned to be elected to the School Council. The council meets regularly to discuss a wide variety of school issues. If your child wishes to attend one or more of these clubs please complete and return the club enrolment form (separate sheet) to your child’s class together with any payment required. Please note that charges for the clubs vary. Dancebites, Target Sports, and Le Club Francais may have already sent out their letters regarding the clubs they run, however, further copies can be obtained from the school office. You will see that certain clubs are called “drop-in” – we do not require an enrolment form to be completed for these clubs as your child can attend as and when they wish. We are fortunate to have a thriving Governing Body that takes an active role in the life of the school. The governing body is a corporate and legal body with general responsibility for the conduct of the school to support Poplar school’s aims and vision providing a broad and balanced curriculum in a safe and stimulating environment. The governing body is made up of Staff Governors, Parent Governors, Local Authority Governors, and Co-opted Governors. The full governing body meets six times a year. A range of informative meetings is held throughout the year. If these are held during the day crèches are organized where possible. The meeting convenor and a Friends of Poplar representative liaise to arrange the crèche. We aim to have a balance of daytime and evening meetings so that working parents can have a chance of attending some of these meetings. We aim to have a general meeting for all Reception parents to explain the Foundation Stage Curriculum in the autumn term. We also hold other June 2015 curriculum evenings or afternoons during the year on a variety of curriculum topics. The programs of study for mathematics are set out year-by-year for key stages 1 and 2. Schools are, however, only required to teach the relevant program of study by the end of the key stage. Within each key stage, schools, therefore, have the flexibility to introduce content earlier or later than set out in the program of study. Also, schools can introduce key stage content during an earlier key stage, if appropriate. All schools are also required to set out their school curriculum for mathematics on a year-by-year basis and make this information available online.

We decided to focus on the background of the painting and the story of Odysseus. We thought this would provide lots of inspiration across each year group. Again it was essential that the work done would be cross-curricular through literacy, DT, art, music, drama, and topic. Each year group chose a trial from Odysseus’ journey to focus on and base their workaround. Then at the end, we would come back together to tell the story through the writing element and the artwork produced.
