- Welcome to our School. At Surrey Square, we aim to give our amazing pupils the very best. Our mission focuses children and adults on the high expectations we have of our school community. Our core values define our ‘personal excellence’ and are the backbone of the school, shaping our curriculum and pedagogy, and guiding our behaviors. Surrey Square is an exciting place – and our best asset is our pupils. Buzzing with energy, they are at the heart of everything we do, and meeting their needs is our sole focus. At Surrey Square, we believe that children can achieve personal excellence through the teaching and modeling of values and skills. Our 7 values – Responsibility, Respect, Enjoyment, Community, Perseverance, Compassion, and Excellence - drive and shape every aspect of school life, and have taken the place of school ‘rules’. Our work in this respect has been acknowledged by many visitors (including, repeatedly, by Ofsted). We do not judge or get angry with children when they come to school not able to read or write – we set about using our professional skills and experience, love and energy, to do everything in our power to ensure they learn those things. So why should it be any different if what the child needs to learn is about how to speak appropriately to an adult, or how to manage themselves when they feel upset or embarrassed? Why would we as an institution simply expect our pupils, coming from such challenged backgrounds in so very many cases, to know this stuff, and get angry with them when they didn’t? Surely, in the most fundamental way, if they don’t know ‘how to behave, then it is our job to teach them? Children have got to have the ability to make decisions and choices themselves about the best way to behave in a situation. We will not always be there helping them to think it through. That is the key difference in our approach to values-based learning rules prescribe a set of appropriate/inappropriate context-specific behaviors (e.g. walk in the corridors), whereas values give a set of aspirational guidelines within which children must choose the right behavior in any context. Our vision is summed up in our mission - ‘Personal and academic excellence everyone, every day.’ For us, the ‘and’ is a critical high attainment in core skills is a pre-requisite for success in secondary school, and beyond. However, just as important are the other skills – the ability to ‘self-manage, to communicate clearly with others, to know who you are, and to have ambition. We define this as ‘personal excellence’ and actively teach our pupils these skills, sing the core values as a framework. We passionately believe that the circumstances of birth should not be the key determining factor in success in life and are immensely proud that ALL children achieve well at Surrey Square, regardless of their socio-economic, ethnic, or gender status. At Surrey Square Primary School we believe in making all learning purposeful and meaningful. We do this by teaching the national curriculum and personal excellence curriculum through the use of REAL projects. REAL means: Rigorous Engaging Authentic Learning Projects are rigorously designed and planned to cover all aspects of the national curriculum whilst at the same time providing a rich, real-life learning experience. This way of learning allows our students to develop their self-confidence and creativity, as well as develop skills that prepare them for a world outside of school. Surrey Square is one of the 9 schools that serve the Aylesbury Estate in South East London. Just a mile from the River Thames at London Bridge, it does seem a world away. The Estate is the largest in the country, and the high-rise blocks can be a foreboding sight. Channel 4 has an ‘ident’ that uses images of the Estate, giving a very negative perception. Our school serves ‘the global majority since 90% of pupils are from non-white British heritages. A large number of our families hail from West Africa, and we also have families from Bangladesh, Somali, Algeria, Peru, Columbia, Poland, Jamaica, Lithuania, Pakistan…and many other places! We are immensely proud of our community that works and learn together in an atmosphere of mutual respect and tolerance. Our Identity curriculum supports this ethos, through the explicit teaching around what it means to be British and exploring different beliefs within the framework of our core values. View full school
- At Charterhouse Square School we share the high hopes you have for your child and we have a proven track record for giving them the education, ambition, confidence, and social skills they need to take the next crucial step in their academic careers. Our Independent private school is ideally located in the heart of London (EC1), with access to some of the City’s most inspiring and historical locations. Our track record in the exam hall and the abilities of our boys and girls have earned us an excellent reputation at many of London’s most prestigious senior schools. We also aim to cultivate the right blend of social skills and confidence in our boys and girls. After all, which of us hasn’t encountered the power of confidence in our school and working lives? We believe that it is this quality – coupled with the high expectations we have of our children – that explains the consistent success of our older children in the exam room and readies them for further success in their future academic careers. Parents send their children to Charterhouse Square School because we offer superb preparation for senior school within a friendly and supportive environment. Year after year our girls and boys leave with much-coveted places at some of London’s finest schools and the personal skills necessary to make the most of the opportunities they have earned. Charterhouse Square School has a character and ethos all of its own. Perhaps it’s something to do with our central location or the surprising space and color we enjoy across our two neighboring buildings. Perhaps it’s that our children don’t wear a school uniform and that they stay together with the same classmates through school from entry to nursery. Or perhaps it’s something to do with the happy atmosphere around the place – where it’s not unusual for our teachers to stay in post for well over a decade, and for our girls and boys to come back for a visit long after they have left the school. These are characteristics that combine to make the school a special place. We are known for our academic success – and that is a source of great pride to us – but we care more about the safe, nurturing environment that makes this success possible. That’s why we place so much emphasis on schemes such as our ‘buddy’ system, for example, which sees each new girl and boy paired up with one of the pupils from the top of the school. And it explains why we are all – pupils and teachers – known by our first names: it makes the teachers so much more approachable and creates that all-important home-from-home feel. Our success is not down to chance – or a selective entry policy. It’s no coincidence that our nursery children are taught by highly qualified teachers who have more than enough skill and know-how to teach our oldest children. We simply will not compromise on teaching excellence – so much so that we have a policy of not using supply teachers or even lunchtime supervisors. We also follow a curriculum designed to ensure that every class in the school is operating a year ahead of what is expected for their age group. Further up the school, we recognize that the most crucial period comes in Years 4 and 5 when the children do the bulk of their exam preparation. That’s why we treat these two classes – Balloon and Kite – as one double year group, making sure that the same teachers guide the children through this important phase of their education. It’s an approach that we know raises standards for all the children. We expect a great deal from our boys and girls. We believe that children respond well to being challenged and extended, as long as they feel comfortable and supported. We also encourage each child – even from an early age – to take responsibility for their learning. We teach them to be self-motivated, inquisitive, and independent – managing their homework and remembering to bring in everything they need each day. It’s all part of giving them the confidence and resilience to push beyond their comfort zones and keep reaching for even greater success. At break time, lunchtime and after school, you can find our children engaged in an unusually wide range of extracurricular clubs, designed to help them identify and develop their talents and interests. At Finsbury Leisure Centre, Golden Lane, or Coram’s Fields you will see our girls and boys swimming, working on their netball, football, and tennis skills, or sampling badminton, volleyball, handball, and dodge ball in our Multi-Sports Club. And back at school, we have clubs for table tennis, judo, and chess – with the last taught by grandmaster Aaron Summerscale. At other times you might hear the sound of our Recorder and Music Clubs in action, our Choir rehearsing for the Christmas Service or summer production, and the scene-stealing antics of one of our two Drama Clubs. Elsewhere you might come across children preparing food in the Cookery Club, exploring new techniques in the Art Club, working on their posture in Ballet Club, or producing the school newspaper in ICT Club. - Here at Ranworth Square Primary School, we are a thriving school community working together to create a warm, welcoming family atmosphere, at the heart of which is our Vision which is key to the development of our children: 'We aspire for all our children to become confident, secure, caring individuals who achieve personal success, develop a love of learning and achieve their academic potential. We endeavor to equip our pupils with the tools and opportunities to reach their full potential in all aspects of education and personal development, underpinned by the values of love, respect, and justice. We pride ourselves on our strong partnership with parents and the local community. It is this partnership that enables us to not only provide a rich and stimulating curriculum for our children but to offer a wide range of opportunities for adults in the community. We are proud of our achievements. Our school is located in the Norris Green area of Liverpool. The school provides excellent facilities and a vibrant, welcoming atmosphere for pupils. Our Mission Statement: To provide, a vibrant, welcoming, secure environment for all children. To encourage, value, and extend every child’s contribution to the school community. Ranworth Square Primary School promotes the fundamental British values of democracy, the rule of law, individual liberty, and mutual respect and tolerance of those with different faiths and beliefs. Actively promoting the values means challenging opinions or behaviors that are contrary to fundamental British values. Enable students to distinguish right from wrong and to respect the civil and criminal law of England. Encourage students to accept responsibility for their behavior, show initiative, and understand how they can contribute positively to the lives of those living and working in the locality of the school and to society more widely. Enable students to acquire a broad general knowledge of and respect for public institutions and services in England. Promote tolerance and harmony between different cultural traditions by enabling students to acquire an appreciation of and respect for their own and other cultures. Our school curriculum has been developed following the structure of the ‘New Curriculum’ ensuring that lessons are fun, interesting, and easy to understand. The curriculum at Ranworth Square not only enables our pupils to enjoy learning but enhances their skills across a range of subject areas and to make meaningful cross-curricular links.
