Children in early years and key stage one read with an adult at least once per week and older children are involved in group reading tasks with an adult just as frequently. We also send home reading books every week for children to read with parents and carers. Parkwood also encourages parents and carers to read more complex texts to their children at home and offer 'school story' every Friday, where children can choose to hear teachers reading a wide range of tales to them in small groups. Our safeguarding policies and procedures are shaped by legislation and government guidelines with the DfE Keeping Children Safe in Education publication as the key document. In school children do not have access to contacting others using school equipment. We want the children of Park View to be immersed in an exciting and engaging curriculum that is relevant to their lives and at the same time ensuring that they have a wider understanding of the world, of modern Britain and what it means to be a good citizen in our rapidly changing global society. Using the National Curriculum as the basis for our curriculum content, reading, writing, and maths are at the center of our curriculum. The basic skills are taught daily and applied to and used in the wider curriculum of science, computing, design technology, humanities, PE, and the arts. We consider that spiritual, moral, social, and cultural education and awareness and understanding of British Values to be extremely important and therefore ensure that these aspects are embedded across the curriculum as a whole. Reading is an essential life skill and we strongly believe that the children of Park View should leave us as competent and fluent readers. Reading is a key that unlocks the world of the imagination, giving children the skill to step into the wonderful world of stories or to immerse themselves into a topic or theme which interests them. Reading is not just about books, it is also about accessing a wide range of text-based material from our ever-changing digital world. Reading forms the core of homework at Park View and children take books home regularly to read with parents and carers. We encourage family members to hear children reading every day at home and not just to read their school book. Comics, magazines, and other reading materials can be used. All pupils in school receive quality first teaching. This means that a range of teaching and learning styles are used and that appropriate learning objective are set for all children with a curriculum matched to their needs. All year groups in Foundation Stage and Key Stage One are supported by a teaching assistant. Teaching assistant support in Key Stage Two is targeted at particular groups of children and planned by the Inclusion Lead. The Governing Body is made up of parents, staff representatives, and other co-opted members who have experience of education or have other skills that enable them to ask relevant questions and hold the school to account. One meeting is a Full Governing Body meeting when all governors meet. The other two are committee meetings. The Resources Committee examines and agrees with the school's spending plan and financial procedures. The Enjoy and Achieve Committee reviews all aspects of teaching and learning, pupil progress and achievement, pupil well-being, attendance, and behavior. The students also cover aspects of the UK Political and Democratic systems, the Criminal Justice System, and Human Rights. They are given time to plan their Career progression, College Applications, and Work Experience. They also study Financial Capability and have extra-curricular Enterprise clubs on offer.
