  1. The Highway Primary School, which has been serving the local community and providing a high-quality education for over 65 years. Our inclusive, family ethos underpins a caring, safe environment where values such as self-esteem and mutual respect allow all children and staff to feel confident, happy, and valued. We see all our children as unique individuals and celebrate their diversity. The Highway is a one-form entry, recently rebuilt and refurbished co-educational primary with approximately 220 pupils on roll. In April 2016 we were delighted to gain Academy status and become part of a Multi-Academy Trust known as the South Orpington Learning Alliance (SOLA) with 5 other local schools: Chelsfield Primary, Darrick Wood Junior School, Green St Green Primary, Pratts Bottom Primary, and Tubbenden Primary. As a school, we endeavor to provide the highest standard of education in a safe, supportive, learning environment, where respect and British values are promoted. We pride ourselves on being a happy, caring, welcoming school where the work of all pupils, staff, and parents is highly valued. We adhere to our school mission statement: Everyone matters at The Highway. Our school is set in beautiful, spacious grounds and is very well equipped with excellent resources including interactive whiteboards in every classroom. We have a networked computing suite, additional laptops and iPads, staging and lighting for productions, a dedicated music room, library, and well-qualified, caring teachers. We also value your input, as your child’s first teachers, and your belief in us that we have the best interests of your child at heart. We have an open-door policy so come in and talk to us! We work hard to promote fundamental British values as part of our spiritual, moral, social, and cultural education in a school where we nurture the whole child, not just fulfilling their academic potential but their personal and creative development too. Being at the heart of the community, we ensure we work very closely in partnership with parents, carers, and governors, where we live by our mission statement that ‘Everyone matters at The Highway’. 2. Children who are happy, respected, secure, and encouraged will do well. They will thrive. They will be open to getting involved, working hard, and making the most of the opportunities and challenges around them. They will be open to doing their best in every circumstance and to developing a sense of responsibility for themselves and the needs of others and the wider world. Here at the High School, we are firmly wedded to the belief that to nurture the whole child the values and ethos described above must be provided for within an atmosphere of tolerance, care, and positive relationships. These values underpin all aspects of our daily life across classrooms, corridors, expressive arts, sport, and beyond. They also allow our young people to have the opportunity to experience an all-around rich and supportive learning environment in which they can develop their potential to the full and are encouraged to aspire for excellence in all they do. The High School of Glasgow is a vibrant, caring, and high-achieving co-educational day school for pupils between the ages 3-18, which has been part of Glasgow’s story since the 12th century. We aim to create a happy and nurturing community in which each individual is enabled to develop their all-around potential from the academic to sport, the expressive arts, and beyond. Our young people are encouraged to develop a sense of responsibility and to pursue excellence in all their activities and opportunities. Drawing upon our Christian background and being a school community open to all faiths and none, our ethos promotes the importance of positive relationships, seeking to foster an atmosphere of mutual tolerance and support, traditional values, and a concern for others. We benefit from excellent resources, modern purpose-built accommodation, and having our playing fields on campus. High School pupils take a positive and enthusiastic approach to the opportunities before them and demonstrate great fun, creativity and energy in all aspects of their school life. In the end, we wish to see them develop into well-rounded, confident, articulate, and caring young people who will seek to make a difference in life. View full school

  4. The Henrietta Barnett School (HBS) is a non-denominational grammar school for girls aged 11-18. We became an Academy in April 2012. Founded in 1911 and situated in the peaceful surroundings of the Hampstead Garden Suburb, the school is a charming Lutyens-designed Grade II* Listed Building. HBS is a warm, friendly, and vibrant community that prides itself on happy and productive relationships. We are consistently one of the top state schools in the country and have an exemplary local and national reputation for academic excellence. Dame Henrietta Barnett strongly believed in the power of education to shape people’s lives and founded the School to provide educational opportunities of the highest quality for its students. She built the School on the principle that education should be open to girls from different backgrounds to study and learn together and from each other. This principle is alive and well at HBS. We provide a broad education that is ambitious, varied, and stimulating. Academic excellence and a wide range of extra-curricular and enrichment opportunities are offered in an open, caring, and supportive environment, enabling each individual to thrive and achieve her potential. We are committed to developing the whole person, encouraging students to explore their interests in a wide variety of ways, and promoting the curiosity of mind, independence of spirit, and a love of learning. We aim to inspire and engage girls in their learning, to develop them as confident, mature, independent thinkers, open to new ideas, to taking risks, and able to think critically. Our balanced curriculum allows girls to pursue their interests and challenges in a stimulating learning environment. Care for the individual is at the heart of everything we do and we aim to develop confidence and self-esteem, which is the foundation of all good learning. In a culture of respect for others but without the need for bells or lists of imposed rules, HBS students are driven by self-motivation, self-discipline and a common purpose, a thirst for learning, and a strong sense of pride in belonging to the diverse, inclusive, high-performing, friendly and supportive school community. They leave HBS full of integrity and ambition, ready and equipped to make a positive contribution to society, with the world at their fingertips. Art and DT are the growing strength of our school. Our projects and exhibitions show how far the girls flourish when given the freedom and confidence to be innovative with a strong foundation of in-depth research and a diversity of skills. We also have an artist-in-residence working on-site during the year to provide professional input and additional workshops for the girls. The school has a thriving and growing Music Department, supporting at least eleven ensembles and choirs, ranging from chamber orchestras to string quartets, Choral Society to Big Band. There are twelve concerts each year, individual music lessons in specific instruments, and an annual day-long Music Festival in which every girl performs with her tutor group. We were delighted to have been awarded Music College Status, in September 2007, to celebrate this area of excellence within the school which has allowed us to continue to develop extensive opportunities and exceptional facilities. The academic life of the school is complemented by a wide range of extra-curricular opportunities that play an essential role in creating a rounded educational experience for our girls. Girls are provided with regular opportunities to collaborate and compete with students from other schools. These include debating and engineering competitions themed study days and sixth form research symposia. View full school

Everything we do as a school is to ensure that our children achieve their very best and we are deeply aware that children only get one chance at their primary education. It is therefore our job to ensure that they all reach the highest levels of personal achievement and development. We want every child to be successful to reach for success from the very first day they join us so when they leave us, they have a love of learning for the rest of their lives. At The Hayes, we are very proud of our pupils and their successes. We are a warm and vibrant school at the heart of our community and are proud of the education we offer our children and our successes. We believe passionately that a great education is one of the most precious gifts a child can receive. With a purpose-driven, high-quality provision, we endeavor to foster fundamental values including respect, responsibility, empathy, positivity, self-belief, cooperation, and tolerance. Underpinning all we do is a belief that every moment a child is in school must be used effectively. If time is wasted it is lost forever and cannot be given back, therefore, our structures and policies are designed to maximize learning potential spent in school. Achievement and a can-do attitude are at the heart of our philosophy. We support this through nurturing pupils’ creativity encouraging independent thinking and learning making learning experiences varied and inclusive and developing skills for lifelong learning. Although raising standards, particularly in literacy and numeracy remains our main objective, we also have great provision and an excellent reputation for sport and the performing arts. 10. The Harrodian is still a young school but it has matured and grown up quickly. Founded in 1993 on the site of the former Harrods sports club with just 65 Pre-Prep and Prep age pupils, we now cater for approximately 1,000 boys and girls aged 4-18 in a single school integrating dedicated sections for Pre-Prep, Prep, and Senior/Sixth Form. I believe three key factors account for our growing success and popularity. Academic standards live up to the environment’s quality. The Harrodian delivers a balanced education across diverse subjects, employing dynamic specialist teachers and support staff who inspire our pupils to work to the limits of their potential, prepare them thoroughly for the next steps in life and help them develop a broad range of interests and skills along the way. Results are excellent with standards at every level improving year by passing year. The third special ingredient in the mix is the unique Harrodian spirit. Parents and pupils all cherish culture and community in which warmth, spontaneity, and lasting friendships are the norm, a place that celebrates individuality and personal achievement as well as promoting a supportive community that binds Harrodians of all ages into a cohesive close-knit family. Harrodian is committed to safeguarding and promoting the welfare of children and young people and expects all staff and volunteers to share this commitment. The School seeks to develop and improve our safeguarding policies and procedures continuously and to promote a culture of excellence in safeguarding amongst all of our staff and volunteers. We believe that doing homework regularly helps pupils develop important skills. As they become more independent in their learning, they also benefit more from their time at school. Homework is also set to help consolidate work done in class and to lead pupils to pursue their lines of inquiry and interest. Our Learning Support Department offers a nurturing environment where, at any stage of their schooling, pupils may obtain the extra support they need to help them to work to their strengths and to achieve their best. Harrodian is non-selective at the Pre-Prep entry point and caters to boys and girls of average to high academic ability. Naturally, during their schooling, some pupils are identified with possible learning difficulties, health problems, and/or emotional or behavioral difficulties. In these cases, our SENCo (Special Educational Needs Coordinators) works closely with the Head of the Pre-Prep School to initiate a process of assessment and action that will support the pupil. Academic excellence is a core goal at the Harrodian but not at the expense of diversity. We are committed to enabling students to realize their maximum potential whatever direction their inclinations and talents may take them in. The Senior and Sixth Form is a stimulating, dynamic, and nurturing learning environment for pupils aged 13-18 with all the qualities required to make good this promise. Our teaching expertise extends from ‘creative’ subjects such as 3-D Design and Media Studies to the rigors of Philosophy and our most popular A Level choice, Mathematics. Many of these pupils benefit from targeted one-to-one lessons provided by our team of specialist teachers, who liaise closely with the pupil's classroom teachers. As they are very young, the support teacher collects and returns Pre-Prep students to and from the classroom, which gives the child time to chat and relax before their bespoke, multi-sensory support session. Form Teachers dedicate much of their time to the personal wellbeing and development of pupils in their class and are the first port of call with regards to any pastoral concerns. Beyond that, there are experienced and accessible Heads of Year, Pastoral Leads in each of the Schools, an on-site nurse and counselor, and a team of trained Mindfulness practitioners, running courses available to all. The health, safety, and welfare of all the people who work or learn at our School are of fundamental importance. We aim to provide a safe, secure, and pleasant working environment for everyone. The Proprietor, the Operations Director, and the Senior Management Team take responsibility for protecting the health and safety of all children and members of staff. Health and Safety is a line management responsibility within the School and will be exercised through the School’s management structure under the direction of a Health and Safety Committee, which meets the requirements of current regulations on consultation of employees, and meets termly. The committee is chaired by the Headmaster and includes the Operations Director, the Deputy Headmistress, the Head of Seniors, and the PA to Head of Seniors. We teach the children about Health and Safety to equip them with the skills, knowledge, and understanding that will enable them to live positive, successful, and healthy lives. 12. The Harefield Academy is an incredibly exciting place to learn! With outstanding sporting facilities, rarely found in state schools, students have unparalleled opportunities to achieve sporting excellence whilst receiving a rounded and broad education. We are very proud of our many success stories, both in terms of academic excellence and sporting achievement. As a small school, the level of pastoral support we can offer students is unique with students routinely reporting that they feel safe and happy and that staff knows them well. The unique environment and opportunities offered within The Academy, are the perfect platform upon which to build success. Our sports partnerships include Watford Football Club, the Harefield Gymnastics Academy, Greenhouse, the Youth Sport Trust, and numerous others. Through these links, as well as our bespoke post 16 football development program, we can deepen access to sport for all students and support the ambitions of those aspiring to a more elite standard of competition. We welcome visits from prospective students and staff. Following our most recent Open Evening, the vast majority of visitors responded to our survey indicating an increased likelihood of sending their child to The Harefield Academy having met our students and learned more about us. We are always most welcoming of bespoke visits if you would like to come and see what we have on offer. Our purpose is to provide all students with the highest quality education through the delivery of an outstanding, well-balanced, and creative curriculum in a supportive, safe and caring environment. Our aspiration is that all children are driven, ambitious and self-motivated that they are supported in fulfilling their potential to enhance future life chances and develop into well-rounded, honest, articulate human beings who make a valued contribution to society. Our ethos is one of mutual respect and kindness within the school community and beyond it is a school where every child matters and is valued where diversity is embraced and where high expectations, hard work, and exemplary behavior are the norm. We aim to create an Educational Centre of Excellence for the whole community that is successful, innovative, cohesive, energetic, healthy, inclusive, and filled with opportunity. Sport is an important part of the Curriculum at The Harefield Academy. We value the opportunity to ensure the physical literacy and health of all our students alongside their emotional and academic development. Students experience a range of sports through the curriculum and via our broad extracurricular offer. We also encourage the pursuit of sporting excellence amongst those students who have the potential to compete at a high level. Our ethos and the value placed on sport ensure that we make it a priority to enable competitive success without compromising academic potential and curriculum access. We are very fortunate to have specialist facilities to support the physical development of students who are competing at a high level of the sport. This includes access to physiotherapy services and strength and conditioning. The degree to which these facilities are accessed varies from one student to another depending on their age, development, and bespoke provision. We are proud to work closely with several additional sports partners including Youth Sport Trust, the Premier League, School Games Organisation, and Greenhouse Sport which yield additional sporting opportunities and early access to initiatives that may not be as widely available in other state schools, such as a full-time table tennis coach. As well as providing mentoring to students who are operating at a high level of competitive sport, we run additional assemblies and meetings and invite specialist speakers from a sports background to the Academy to help our students understand the challenges of competitive sport. 18. The Hall School provides exceptional teaching to some of the brightest boys in London to develop in them the skills for a lifetime of learning that will stimulate rewarding, diverse, and distinctive lives. Hall boys have a fulfilling and exciting week, both personally and socially, experiencing huge breadth and depth in the curriculum. From his earliest days with us, every boy is encouraged and supported to delve into the variety of learning on offer, from pottery to coding and on to debating and fencing. We want boys to give of themselves with confidence while truly understanding the importance of the values of endeavor, honesty, and integrity. We want boys to achieve to the best of their capabilities and to have distinctive lives that make an impact on the world around them. As a staff, we are ambitious for our boys academically and we are proud of the range of senior schools they go on to. Yet, just as importantly, we realize the significant role we play in preparing the boys for the future beyond their next school, through nurturing their adaptability to new learning environments as much as through specific subject knowledge. Our goal is to help Hall boys acquire and secure formative ways of learning for this ever-changing wider world. That is why our approach to learning has an emphasis on collaboration and discovery. That is why we allocate more time to the sort of extra-curricular activities like drama, debating, and art that nurtures confidence, creativity, and communications skills. We have invested in sports facilities at the Wilf Slack Playing to encourage the learning of skills associated with teamwork and resilience through sport and games. That is why we aim to keep our boys’ feet firmly ‘on the ground’ in promoting an understanding of the world around us, starting with London, the global city in which we are situated. Tolerance of others’ viewpoints and beliefs is encouraged through engaging in local culture as much as learning about issues in the wider world through current affairs lessons, assemblies, and charity work. Opportunities to become involved in activities within the local community in Camden are plentiful. Boys appreciate the uniqueness of our locality through taking part in joint activities with local primary schools and outreach groups. Originality and curiosity have always been at the heart of the experience of being at The Hall and such values take on increased relevance as educational experiences for the modern world are tailored to suit each boy. There can be no ‘typical’ Hall Boy leaving our doors at the end of Year 8 – each emerges as an individual, certainly with many strengths to be cherished, but also with self-awareness of particular personal characteristics requiring further refinement. Whilst the composition of The Hall community now reflects the cosmopolitan nature of London, these values remain at the core of school life: we celebrate behaviors revealing integrity, confidence, responsibility, endeavor, curiosity, originality, tolerance, and courtesy in all members of our community. The results can be seen among members of our alumni, gathered at the school’s 125th-anniversary events in 2015, who came from an impressive range of professional, cultural, and entrepreneurial backgrounds and spoke of the special legacy of a Hall education. People like Oliver Sacks, neuroscientist, and polymath, the Rt. Hon. Oliver Letwin MP and Lord Neuberger, President of the Supreme Court of the United Kingdom. Most strikingly, they lead distinctive lives. The Hall strives to produce a broad, high-caliber education for all its pupils, of whom it has high expectations. It aims to ensure a happy, secure, and energetic community in which every individual, child, and adult alike, can thrive, and to promote an exciting and stimulating academic environment that will foster a life-long love of learning for every pupil. Boys at The Hall should never be bored! The school prepares boys for their wider life ahead, in terms of their moral and spiritual education and their acquisition of individual passions both inside and outside the academic classroom. In school and out of school, we want our pupils to develop confidence in themselves as well as a sense of corporate responsibility so that every boy has the self-belief to do well for himself but also to contribute fully at school and in his life ahead to those around him and wider society. We encourage our pupils to show an awareness of others at the same time as self-discipline for themselves and to show empathy and enjoyment of the diverse cultures and traditions that are represented at The Hall and in the surrounding community and city of which the school is part. 20. The Hall School & Nursery is situated in a charming listed building The Grange Country House on the Rickmansworth Road in Northwood. The school provides a cozy and homely atmosphere in which the pupils (aged 1 – 7 years) feel happy and comfortable to learn and love education. Our class sizes are small so that every child can expect one-to-one attention and teaching, daily. We have specialist teachers for PE, Dance, French, and Music. We have various classrooms, ICT, and art rooms as well as a soft surface playground, outdoor sports arenas, and beautiful gardens for the pupils to enjoy. Each term the pupils go on educational school trips and enjoy taking part in school performances, events, and parties. The Hall School is the right setting for the child. Children are born to learn and are naturally inquisitive. The Hall School aims to provide a stimulating environment in which our enthusiastic teachers act as exemplary role models from which the children learn. Often children’s early learning ability is underestimated but we believe that, with the right approach, anything is possible. At The Hall School, children work in small groups, with a dedicated teacher and progress at their rate. By liaising with parents, individual needs and learning styles are identified, such that every child can achieve both their academic and social potential. The Hall School is a multi-faith and multi-cultural school where all staff and pupils show respect and care for one another at all times, regardless of race, color, ability, or creed. Because The Hall School knows that every single child is different, it offers each of its pupils – from Preschool through to 7+ – an individualized approach to education. This enables each pupil to have an agreed focus, set by their teacher or key worker in partnership with the child’s parents so that every pupil is encouraged to achieve their own personal best by identifying their particular learning needs. Targets are reviewed termly and discussed with parents at every parent interview. Class sizes are small to ensure children are taught at their own pace and that we can differentiate effectively to engage every child. Various learning styles are used to challenge each type of learner and to promote an inquisitive nature. The Hall School curriculum has been developed over several years to give the children an advance in academics alongside varied and interesting topics all promoted through fun-based activities and experiences. The Hall School uses a positive praise system to help establish a respectful and encouraging environment. Children are praised for their positive behavior, achievements, and social empathy prompting peers to follow this lead. The older children are encouraged to make good choices and to self-solve problems during the day. Merit badges are awarded weekly for those children that demonstrate friendly and positive behavior. We recognize that parents are the most important people for children’s early development. Close working between the school and parents is vital for supporting children’s learning. We aim to ensure regular communication with parents, keeping them informed of their child’s progress and involving them when setting individual education plans. We invite parents to join us at the beginning of each academic year to share the curriculum, structure, and working methods of each class and ensure that parents can fully support their children’s learning in the home environment. Teachers are available daily to discuss any needs as they arise as well as the regular parents' evenings and end-of-year reports. The Hall School strives to create strong links with a variety of organizations within the local area. The school works closely with the Hillingdon early years advisory team, service providers, places of worship, local shops, charities, and more. In doing so the children are given a chance to gain practical knowledge of the world around them, where they live and how a neighborhood works together. We also try to emulate this community spirit through our parent and pupils relations, with regular opportunities to get together and share achievements and ideas. View full school

  22. The Gower School offers a high-quality and broad curriculum in multi-age groups aimed at the development of the whole person – mind, body, heart, and soul. We teach academic and social skills, as well as life skills, to last a lifetime. It was wonderful for the school’s work to be rated as Outstanding and Excellent in every category following our most recent external inspection. We offer a broad curriculum in multi-age classrooms which aims to develop the whole person – their mind, body, heart, and soul. We teach academic, social, and other valuable skills to last a lifetime. Our goal is to make sure that our girls and boys are confident, happy all-rounders with a love of learning. Our primary school opened in September 2007 and educates children from Reception through to Year Six. It is situated in attractive, modern buildings in Barnsbury, Islington. The site was originally converted from a former journalists’ training college and was further enlarged with a roof extension and annex into the neighboring building in 2010. The school extension won the British Council’s ‘Best Teaching and Learning Environment (Independent School)’ Award in 2011. In 2016 we acquired further space in the annex which was turned into classrooms to host our ever-growing school. All areas of the school are resourced to the highest standard with a wide range of Montessori educational materials, as well as traditional learning activities and a wide range of ICT facilities. There is an emphasis on music and the arts and there are many high-quality performances and productions as part of everyday school life. Many children play a musical instrument and all children from Year One upwards participate in a weekly recorder lesson in small groups. We teach French to all our children as part of the school curriculum. Due to our connections with the City of London, the school has a high number of children who are either bilingual in French and English or who speak French as an additional language and we, therefore, offer classes at a higher level for native speakers. We offer a comprehensive range of out-of-school activities, both during term-time and in the school holidays. After school each day, there is a range of activities offered to each age group which operates until 6 pm. There is a well-attended theatre club, two school choirs, languages such as French and Mandarin Chinese, as well as a range of out-of-school sports activities, including swimming, archery, gymnastics, yoga, cricket, athletics, ballet, modern dance, and karate. There are plenty of opportunities for arts and crafts, such as the origami club. Older primary children enjoy journalism, coding, cookery, and science clubs. During the school holidays – for thirteen weeks of the year – we operate a Holiday Fun Club which is also open to children from outside the school. Each week has an educational theme and the children make the most of being in central London with trips to museums, galleries, and the theatre, as well as taking part in sporting activities. We encourage the children to focus on the greater community and build on our social responsibility by promoting awareness of the world through good citizenship to other children, our staff, and parents. We fundraise regularly, mostly but not exclusively, for children’s charities, incorporating this into the curriculum. We usually raise more than £10,000 each year. We aim to be the greenest school anywhere and our primary school site has been designed and built to be as sustainable as possible. We were finalists in the 2014 Independent Schools Association’s Green School of the Year Award. The school has received several awards for its approach to the environment. The classroom is fully equipped to teach using the Montessori method, working sequentially through materials. Children are also introduced to a broad range of knowledge through project work. The Foundation Stage follows the six areas of learning from the Early Years Foundation Stage curriculum (the National Curriculum for Early Years pupils), as well as the Montessori method. Three mornings of the week there is a three-hour Montessori work cycle, followed by lunch and playtime in Grimaldi Park. On the other two days, the work cycle is in smaller intervals. The children also take part in ‘Show and Tell’ presentations, where they put together a little talk for their friends on a topic of their choice. In our Lower School, we have three classes for children aged five to seven years (parallel mixed Year One and Two groups). In line with the Montessori method, when children reach the Lower School they begin to use a ‘worklist’. Every morning, upon arrival, each child writes a list of tasks to work on during their three-hour work cycle. This list includes maths, writing, reading, language, and culture. Children work through their list in any order, working independently, with a friend, in a small group, or alongside their Key Person. Each child works their way through a broad curriculum, which includes spelling, grammar, comprehension, reading, maths, science, and culture, at their own pace. The Upper School covers pupils from Years Three to Six. In these classes, the holistic Montessori ethos is still the central guide. Autonomous research work is encouraged and supported as are numerous trips and visits off-site. However, as the children move into studying more abstract concepts, the need for Montessori equipment becomes less pronounced and a shift takes place towards a more traditional timetable with weekly spelling, times tables, and verbal/non-verbal reasoning. 23.
