Sacred Heart Academy is a Catholic, all-girls high school with an enrollment of approximately 834. As a member of Sacred Heart Schools, SHA is located on the Ursuline Campus in Crescent Hill and sponsored by the Ursuline Sisters of Louisville. The Class of 2018 earned more than $29 million in college scholarships, the highest amount of all girls’ Catholic high schools in Louisville. The average ACT composite score is 27, well above the state and Archdiocese averages. One-hundred percent of the senior class takes the ACT. SHA is an International Baccalaureate (IB) World School. The Class of 2018 had 28 members earn the full IB diploma (a 100% success rate). In over 15 years of participation in IB testing, 96.7% of Sacred Heart students who attempted the diploma have been successful. The world average is approximately 82%. SHA offers more college-level courses than any other Catholic high school in Louisville. There are 36 IB and AP courses offered. The faculty is made up of more than 80 teachers, counselors, and administrators, more than 78% of whom have graduate or postgraduate degrees. The student-to-teacher ratio is 10:1 and the average class size is 16. SHA students come from 65 local grade schools or middle schools (89 total schools including high school transfers and out of town schools) and 47 zip codes from Louisville, surrounding counties, and southern Indiana. SHA is a Catholic school but all faiths are welcomed. Currently, approximately 20% of the student body comes from other faith backgrounds. SHA offers more than $1,000,000 in financial aid and academic scholarships. SHA is a 1:1 school, equipping each student with an iPad to add another dimension to the academic program. The iPad allows students to create, research, compose, and connect. The athletic program has a rich tradition having earned 85 team state titles in its history. The on-campus athletic facility includes a gym, fitness center, five tennis courts, a regulation track, softball field, two natural grass fields, and one synthetic turf field. Nearly 60% of the student body participates in one or more of 15 sports. The Ursuline Arts Center (UAC) on campus provides students with a modern facility in which to develop their artistic talents. It has over 500 comfortable seats including balcony seating, orchestra pit, scene/prop shop, and costume storage, wheelchair seating, and a spacious atrium. The structure of the SHA counseling department is unique in that students stay with the same school counselor for all four years but also work with a college counselor during their junior and senior years. This allows our counselors more time with the students and aids them in getting to know the personality, strength, and individuality of each girl. Students have regularly scheduled appointments with their counselor each year however the counselors have an open door policy and welcome students and parents to make appointments with them if needed. The history of Big Heart Christian School was begun by the opening of the Hanmaum kindergarten in 1993. After a highly successful 10 years with a kindergarten program, parents requested an expansion of the education system expressing dissatisfaction with the current Korean education system. Realizing that fostering future talents based on the Bible is the only solution to the educational problem, several church leaders and myself established BHCS, in March 2005. There has been tremendous development at BHCS, not only the numerical size of the school but also with a high-quality English curriculum. We began with just 6 students and 2 teachers. As God blessed the school, the student enrollment increased and we hired additional teachers with native English speaking abilities. Since its beginning, another big strength has been a low student-to-teacher ratio in our classes. The educational objectives of Big Heart Christian School may be summarized as a nine bullet paradigm targeting a quality Christian Education as follows: God-oriented education: An education that acknowledges God’s will through the power of prayer and dependence upon the Holy Spirit. Our school is a Catholic high school that was founded by Dr. Yao in 1969. In the beginning, our school was registered as Sacred Heart Industrial and Commercial Vocational Senior High School. Dr. Yao was the first principal. By 1971, the construction of the school buildings and school factories had been completed. The equipment for classrooms had also been purchased and teachers had been recruited. In 1971, our school had enrolled a total of 110 students for the three following courses: Synthetic Business, Electrical Engineering, and Mechanical Engineering. Teachers have three characteristics: love, patience, and passion, and educate the youth, irrespective of background. Students also have three characteristics: concentration, peaceful mind and purity, and willingness to open up their minds for wisdom and follow the sage precursors. In 1972, our school was permitted to set up a night school. Since the establishment of the school, Dr. Yao went abroad many times to visit many different countries, such as the USA, Canada, West Germany, and Italy to raise funds to help develop the school. However, the job of raising funds became more and more difficult. Under such tough circumstances, we still tried hard and managed to complete Sacred Heart Building and the school gym to make our campus more efficient. Later, to follow the government’s policy of developing more Complete Schools and Comprehensive High Schools for Taiwanese students, we then included general senior high courses in 1990 and changed the school’s name to Sacred Heart High School. Therefore, our school could continue to provide students in Keelung with a superior education environment. Our founder, Dr. Yao retired in 1990 due to bad health. Our School Vision diagram is created from a skeleton of the School Logo the cross stands for the school’s belonging to the Catholic system. Love gives life to the spirit of the cross. When the cross is embraced by a red heart of love, this made a cast on its feature, the spirit of love, from the background vividly. Our school motto of love God, love country, loving parents, and love people also fulfills this spirit of the cross ─ meaning and mission of Love. Our School Vision diagram shows a way to pass on the Spirit of Love by adopting Education Love as a core, with the woven fabric of Virtues as a foundation, with anchoring four cornerstones of development - Multi-intelligences, International Vision, Pragmatic Practice to bring out our school Vision of establishing every Sacred Heart child's accomplishment. After his retirement, Mr. Shih Yi-Tsai, the former director of the Academic Affairs Office, was assigned to be the principal. Inspired by the sacrifice and selflessness of Dr. Yao, the staff of the whole school devoted every effort to improve the teaching quality and give the students the best education. Our school has made great progress in recent years. In 1995, we included junior high courses. Approved by the Ministry of Education, our school has become a Complete School. After the retirement of Principal Shih Yi-Tsai, Mr. Chih Yi-Chuan was appointed by the school board as the third principal in 2003. In 2009, the school board assigned the director of the Academic Office, Ms. Lu He-Fong, to be the fourth principal. In 2013, Ms. Yang Ru-Jing took over the responsibility and became the fifth principal. In the same year, our school’s name was changed to Fu Jen Sacred Heart High School. It was a new milestone for our school and Principal Yang will continue leading all the staff to overcome the new challenges in the future. Students’ Affairs Office is in charge of all aspects of the students’ school life including meals, uniforms, dormitories, school buses, and extracurricular activities. The office is also responsible for guiding students. The main job of Students’ Affairs is to focus on three dimensions-learning, volunteering, life caring, and moral education. These four important factors have helped make the campus a friendly, safe, and pleasant environment. We hope to see our students get well-educated and gain knowledge in this sound and the comfortable campus that we will provide to them.
