The School Council devised these charters to ensure pupils enjoy learning in a safe and caring environment. We have a commitment and responsibility to safeguard children and staff and this includes their online activity. Children’s use of computing at school is supervised and follows a structured teaching plan according to the national curriculum programs of study, helping children to learn progressively about online safety issues during their time at school. Internet access at school, provided through the London Grid for Learning, is strictly filtered and monitored to ensure that children are as safe as possible when using computers at school. At Sherwood, we see online safety as a shared responsibility between school and home. Many children now have access to the internet through the use of smartphones, tablets, laptops, and game consoles. Therefore it is both of our responsibilities to ensure the children are using this technology in a safe environment. At Sherwood, we aim to develop your child socially, emotionally, physically, and intellectually in a happy, secure, caring, and stimulating environment. We do this by offering a wide range of activities to promote different learning through play. We have a Parents Board at the entrance to the nursery with more information about what we are learning each week and ideas of things to do at home and, as always, the nursery team is happy to answer any questions or comments from parents. Extracurricular activities are important to the children at The Sherwood as it encourages them to gain independence and confidence within the school community. We aim to provide a variety of clubs across the school for all year groups. As well as teaching staff running clubs at lunchtime and after-school, we also have external providers running clubs. At Sherwood, we believe firmly in a literature-based English curriculum. We have developed the curriculum to include a range of good-quality texts that we hope will inspire and motivate the children. We use the Merton Assessment Procedures to track progress, next steps, and attainment and moderate this regularly to ensure we are adapting our teaching and planning to meet the needs of our children as much as possible. Within writing, children are taught the features and grammatical techniques of a range of genres and are encouraged to write across a variety of subjects. We value the children’s writing highly each term children complete a ‘Big Write’ task which is set across the entire school. The best examples of these are then chosen to be displayed which inspires others as well as recognizes the achievements made. In guided reading, we focus heavily on the comprehension and understanding of texts. We use a mixture of ‘Jolly Phonics’ and ‘Letters and Sounds to teach reading but also understand the importance and value of children being able to discuss books. Children are given time to think and talk about their favorite authors, themes, and plots within texts as well as the vocabulary used and the impact on the reader.
