St James’s Primary School is a safe, happy, and friendly place where our children are given every opportunity to develop and grow physically, spiritually, intellectually, and socially. We aim to be a center of academic excellence with great concern for children at risk. We strive to ensure that we discover at least one strength of each child before they leave our care. Our school aims to instill in all our pupils a great sense of worth and uniqueness, thereby enabling them to develop to their full potential. Our school welcomes parent involvement and participation at every level through the Parent’s Association, Board of Management, and Home School Liaison Activities. Creativity in the classroom grew out of the Canal Communities Partnership’s attempt to address social and educational disadvantage dynamically, with the hope of eventually impacting on early school leaving endemic in our area. As a result of consultation with local schools, it was felt that through the visual arts children could be allowed to have new learning experiences and exposure to learning creatively and at the same time exploring concepts and ways of working individually and collectively. The project runs for thirty weeks in total in each of the six schools. This is divided into three groups of ten-week sessions. Therefore, three classes in each school are facilitated each year. The Dalkey School Project National School or DSPNS was founded by a group of parents, who wished to have their children educated in a multi-denominational school. When it opened in September 1978 in Dun Laoghaire it was the first such school in the country. Since 1985 the school is located in Glenageary Lodge, Glenageary, Co. A huge congratulations to all of the pupils and staff in Cheeverstown School as the school has been awarded the Active School Flag. The Active School Flag (ASF) is awarded to schools that strive to achieve a physically educated and physically active school community. The Active School Flag was awarded to the school in October / November 2018 and will remain valid for three years after which time the school will be invited to re-apply. A huge thanks to our Principal, Ms. Sheelagh Jones who coordinated the application process. The Pieta House Amber Flag Initiative recognizes the individual efforts of schools, companies, and groups to create healthy, inclusive environments that support mental well-being and unites these groups in their efforts, working together toward a happier, healthier Ireland and eradicate the stigmas associated with mental health issues. Cheeverstown School has applied to be considered for the Amber Flag. The school has identified several strategies already in place to promote positive mental health and is working on improving the promotion of positive mental health for all of the pupils and staff. Our aim here in Belgrove Senior Girls’ School is to help each child to achieve her full potential. Together with her educational development, each child’s personal, emotional and social development is our priority. The building of each child’s self-esteem is of prime importance. The Deputy Head of the Department teaches in every classroom and assists the Head of Pre-Prep with administration duties. Each class is taught by a suitably qualified and experienced early years teacher who is supported by classroom assistants, who are also qualified, teachers. Our fundamental philosophy of early years’ education is founded on a carefully planned yet rigorous play-based approach to learning. While we teach the Irish Primary Curriculum for Junior (Pre-Prep 2) and Senior Infants (Pre-Prep 3), we also include aspects of the Montessori teaching methodology, using Montessori materials. Dialogue or talk, active engagement in tasks, and freedom to explore topics in-depth are seen as vitally important to engage all children in exciting, age-appropriate, learning activities. Topics or themes change roughly every half term and might include, for example, “All About Me”, “Space”, “Mini Beasts” or the “Fairy tales”.
