  1. Waseda's culture and traditions have evolved over more than a century, but its founding principles remain firm, and the Waseda spirit lives in the hearts of over 500,000 alumni. Here we present the changing, the unchanged, the little-known, and the lovable about Waseda. On Waseda University's 30th anniversary in October 1913, President Shigenobu Okuma proclaimed its newly adopted Mission Statement. As the introductory statement of its educational policy, the mission was drafted by Sanae Takata, Shoyo Tsubouchi, Kenkichi Ichijima, Kazutami Ukita, Yasukuni Matsudaira, and their colleagues, and approved by Okuma before its presentation at the anniversary celebration. In 1937 a monument inscribed with the mission statement, in calligraphy by Hisoka Maejima, was installed near the main gate. Waseda University holds as its founding principles the preservation of the independence of scholarship, the promotion of the practical application of scholarship, and good citizens' fostering. Holding the independence of scholarship as a central principle, Waseda University pledges to contribute to the world's scholarship regarding freedom of research as essential and to devote itself to original research. Holding the practical application of scholarship as a central principle, Waseda University pledges to contribute to the progress of the times by establishing a path for the practical use of scholarship and pursuing theoretical research for its own sake. Holding the fostering of good citizens as a central principle, Waseda University pledges to cultivate people of character who can respect individuality, develop themselves and their families, benefit the nation and society, and be active in the world at large. Independence of Learning is tightly connected with the outsider's spirit and a critical mind. Waseda University has promoted scientific education and research without bending to authority or temporal fashion to produce independent modern citizens. So the founding principle of Practical Utilization of Knowledge focuses not on shallow pragmatism but the spirit of progressivism. The transformation to a global and borderless world is gaining momentum every year, touching every sector of society, and universities are no exception. Labels such as domestic and foreign lose their meaning, as universities worldwide face increasingly fierce competition in their pursuit of the highest-quality education and research. Since its foundation, Waseda University has been sensitive to changes in society while maintaining its core principles. We have fearlessly taken on a variety of challenges and tirelessly pursued innovation. Waseda has been built by our many predecessors and their bold endeavors embodying the founding spirit. However, as we face this era of massive change, I see it as the mission and duty of today's Waseda to go further, building on this tradition. Our vision is to lead in global education and research. Best Education, Best Research, Best Community represents our collective aim to achieve world-class results in all our pursuits. I believe that now is the time to press forward with Waseda's traditional enterprising spirit to address the many challenges the world now faces. This program's blueprint is the Waseda Vision 150 strategic plan, which sets up goals and initiatives for the period up to Waseda's 150th anniversary in 2032. In the education sphere, we have already implemented the Quarter system and established the Global Education Center and the Center for Higher Education Studies. In the research sphere, we have established the URA (University Research Administrator) position at the Center for Research Strategy in finance. We have stimulated higher levels of donations and yielded healthier financial results overall. These efforts have been recognized and boosted by Waseda's selection as a top-class institution in the national Super Global University program. Amid an international trend of opening up universities to the world and emphasizing dynamic thinking, the program provides grants and other support for our goal to break into the top 100 of the world university rankings and produce 100,000 global leaders over ten years. The entire university worked as a team to achieve these results in the first stage of our undertaking. Now, looking ahead, I have set out the following policies for stage two, aiming for Waseda, the Best. View full university
  2. WBS started as a business education program (non-degree program) at the Systems Science Institute of Waseda University in 1973. Since then, it has gone through some reorganization from being a Graduate School of Asia-Pacific Studies to offering an MBA Track at the Graduate School of Commerce. Waseda Business School (WBS) aims to support those who aspire to a step-up in their career and plan to start a new career by studying at a business school. Our society today is undergoing rapid change. The world is globalizing, new technologies are appearing successively, and the market is changing. In order to survive in the global competitive environment, management knowledge of a global standard is essential. We need to acquire the capacity to solve problems – to identify the essence of the problem, find a solution to it, and implement the solution – and develop practical skills to tackle the problems for which our experience is not applicable. WBS is the best place to acquire management knowledge, problem-solving capability, the capacity to act, and leadership skills. As its mission statement suggests, WBS aims to create actionable knowledge, develop leaders with a global perspective, and form a learning community. Faculty at WBS include practitioners such as senior executives with a wealth of experience, consultants of the highest level, and researchers doing the cutting edge of research in various management fields. Because of our faculty profile's breadth, we create actionable knowledge that is neither armchair theory nor the simple transmission of management experience. WBS also has an International MBA program and an MSc in Finance program, entirely taught in English. These programs attract students from all over the world. Because of these English-based programs, we are in close contact with top-class business schools abroad. Exchanges at both student and faculty levels are thriving. Therefore, intercultural communication is a fact of life at WBS, and students will acquire global perspectives. Lastly, there is a fantastic learning community at WBS, where excellent students of diverse backgrounds come together. At WBS, students' participation in learning is very much encouraged. This learning community is indispensable for the creation of actionable knowledge through discussion and the development of leadership. WBS offers a wide range of programs, and it is one of the most prominent business schools in Japan in terms of the number of students and the faculty's size. Our site is the source of our strength. Because we have so many students, we can offer a wide range of courses, enabling you to find the courses that address your concerns. A learning community of considerable size made up of diverse members improves learning effects. Those students with whom you study at WBS will be to your advantage: you will work together to start a new business, you will collaborate at work, and you will share your joys and troubles. An extensive network of students and alumni comprises a valuable asset. WBS's characteristics and strengths will be useful to you in acquiring the ability to respond to the rapid changes our society is now facing. At the same time, however, the global environment that surrounds business schools is also changing. For example, western business schools are increasingly finding it difficult to secure high pay for alumni, and the opportunity costs of their two-year programs are rising. The era in which the majority of graduates found jobs in big companies in the West is over: the proportion of graduates finding jobs in newly-emerging countries with a completely different business environment and with a large proportion of venture businesses is rising. To address these changes, business schools in the world have developed a diverse range of programs in terms of student profile, the amount of learning involved, and the specialized fields offered. Their curriculum now emphasizes entrepreneurship, global perspective, intercultural communication, and ethics than ever before. Here at WBS, we are acutely aware that we also need to keep innovating ourselves by considering the challenges posed by and the evolution of business schools around the globe and by emphasizing the benefits of being based in Japan to compete with business schools abroad. 5. WICS is an international school established on Christian values. We promise to provide a Bible-based education program that teaches our students to hone universal values that transcend generations and geographical areas. These values will nurture future Christian leaders who love God, their neighbors, and themselves. WICS has an excellent faculty to provide a high-quality education that leads students to attend globally recognized universities. We have also arranged educational experts who assist students to study abroad after graduation. Students will not only learn English, Japanese, Korean, and Chinese but also take part in multicultural history programs. Furthermore, WICS is a school that cooperates with its students and parents. The parents will gain trust in their children's education, and students will have the special experience of growing with the school. At WICS, we provide an education rooted in biblical values. We aim to teach students the true purpose of God’s creation, nurture their spiritual gifts, and instill unchanging truths as they pursue their visions. Through offering education in intellect, character, and faith, we seek to nurture Christian leaders of the next generation who are filled with God’s love and justice. We are confident that we can work with students to help them take active roles in today’s international stage. WICS is located in the Shinjuku district of Tokyo. We aim to cultivate young men and women of this generation by providing our students with courses based on biblical values. They will learn to be contributing members of society where they will identify themselves as Christian, glorify God, and have positive impacts on humanity. Throughout human history, education has been one of the most important issues in society. In Japan, a high truancy rate, bullying, and collapse of order in classes have become areas of concern. Meanwhile, in Korea, distrust of public education has led to excessive private education, and many students study abroad at an early age. These educational concerns result in serious issues within society, such as difficulty developing character through education, the collapse of family structure, and a widening gap between the rich and the poor. All faculty and staff at WICS encourage students to become global leaders who glorify God, benefiting as many people as possible. At WICS, your child will have the opportunity to develop their vision and make international connections through our global network. With a team of passionate, native English teachers who are experts in their fields, WICS will empower your children to succeed academically, personally, and professionally. Academic credits will be given when a student passes one year of classwork in a particular subject. Generally, the number of credits given for a class will align with the number of times the class meets per week. For example, classes that meet two times per week will typically be worth two credits. WICS follows the grade divisions of a typical American school. Elementary school consists of grades 1-5 middle school, 6-8, and high school, 9-12. Our curriculum is based on American education standards and includes the culture and history of Japan and its neighboring countries. After graduating from high school, all students can pursue higher education in universities in foreign countries. We have arranged English-speaking admission advisors from countries such as China, Korea, and Japan. Our school uses textbooks and supportive teaching materials based on biblical values. We also have a worship service and a Bible class once a week, which helps our students to grow spiritually. To grow socially, students participate in extra-curricular activities catered to their talents and interests. Core classes -- English, Social Studies, Science, and Math -- are taught in English. WICS runs ESL (English as a Second Language) courses to help students transition into the regular curriculum. WICS runs ESL (English as a Second Language) courses for students to prepare for the regular curriculum. Students will spend time adapting to classes taught in English and will join the regular curriculum after completing the ESL program and passing their arranged tests. The courses are designed to support students even after they begin taking regular classes students may selectively take ESL classes as long as they need before fully transitioning to the regular course load. ESL courses will be always open for new students. ESL classes take place five days per week. Morning classes consist of reading, writing, and speaking they prompt and empower students to use English in everyday situations. For students who are encountering English for the first time, the ESL program will be managed by teachers who can speak the student’s native tongue. Students can participate in various co-curricular activities including spelling bees speech contests Bible memory verse competitions academic competitions in math, science, and social studies drama club dance team, and band. Students also have free access to ping pong tables during breaks throughout the school day and take golf lessons with a professional instructor twice per month. WICS provides chapel and Bible study classes once per week to every student. These classes are required for all students, regardless of faith. Through these programs, we hope to instill in our student's biblical values, faith, spirituality, and a passion for leading the world to Christ. During chapel, students will have opportunities to serve and lead. Students who are passionate about serving God and are willing to take on additional responsibility may serve as worship leaders. Students read the Bible with their teachers in morning devotion groups and apply biblical teachings to their lives. We discuss problems that Christians face in the world and encourage each other to live responsibly. Our curriculum uses textbooks from a biblical worldview, and all subjects are taught by Christian teachers. We also have a chaplain who can guide students in their spiritual growth!
