About Me

  1. One of Canada’s oldest and most prestigious universities, St. Francis Xavier, has consistently ranked the best undergraduate university in Canada. The first university in Canada to have a formal Service Learning program, StFX, values community development, social justice, and global awareness. We are home to the internationally-recognized Coady International Institute, and students find leadership development opportunities here that they can apply in all aspects of their lives. Students who are committed to and embody these values thrive at StFX. Our close-knit residence environment is at the heart of the StFX experience. Students live and learn together in a thriving academic environment. They have a wide variety of fascinating programs to choose from in the faculties of Arts, Science and Education, and within the Gerald Schwartz School of Business. Our 45,000 worldwide alumni are a healthy and engaged community and provide a valuable network for graduating students. At StFX, we are excited about where we are and where we are headed. Today’s StFX is one of Canada’s very best universities known for our exceptional academic programs, focus on leadership development and commitment to social justice and community development. However, we also like to remember where we came from. Founded in 1853, St. Francis Xavier has a long and proud tradition as one of Canada’s oldest universities. For almost 165 years, we have cultivated our strong and resilient spirit, dedication to intellectual rigor, and commitment to engaging students who aspire to be community-minded citizens of the world. Our motto Quaecumque Sunt Vera, or “Whatsoever Things are True,” perfectly captures our integrity, dignity, truth, and respect for all. StFX attracts about half of its student population from outside the Atlantic region, which allows us to benefit from a community that reflects nearly every corner of the world. We also have alumni in 140 countries who strengthen and enrich the StFX experience. StFX was founded in 1853. During the first half of the 19th century, close to a million farmers, laborers and tradespeople came from the British Isles to the shores of Nova Scotia to seek a better life, joining the Acadians and Aboriginal peoples already settled here. Scottish Highlanders made up 67% of the StFX constituency, while Acadians, Irish, English, and Aboriginal made up the rest. StFX offered the only university-level education in the region at that time and, partnered with the Roman Catholic diocese, maintained strict academic standards to provide the best education possible. StFX got its name from a German priest named John Schulte, who was sent to Canada to be the first Principal. The priest had never been to North America and so considered Nova Scotia a missionary area. Since St. Francis Xavier was the patron saint of the missions, it seemed appropriate the new college should be named in his honor. View full university

Consistent with this tradition, the University offers challenging undergraduate, graduate, and professional programs, characterized by a collegial alliance of faculty, students, staff, administration, and community members committed to providing coursework, resources, activities, and instructional facilities that support excellence in teaching and learning. While chiefly concerned with students' intellectual development, the University also supports their moral and spiritual growth and enhances their leadership capacity through co-curricular programs. At the heart of the academic mission is the University's commitment to a strong general education program that introduces students to college life and learning, broadens their knowledge in the arts and sciences, helps them integrate learning and community concerns, and prepares them for success in their major fields of study and life after graduation. In all programs of study, the University encourages the examination of fundamental questions of human concern, respectful dialogue in the context of diverse points of view and experience, and the search for truth and justice. In an atmosphere of intellectual rigor made possible by academic freedom, University faculty develop and teach courses in their advanced study areas, extend research in their disciplines, produce scholarly and creative work, and serve the University and community. Faculty are also responsible for academic policies and the design and content of the University curriculum. In teaching, scholarship, and service, faculty represent one of the most visible examples of the University's intellectual life.

  10. Many of our students join SFX because they hear “good things” about us from friends and family. Becoming a member of SFX 6th Form College is a bigger venture than merely enrolling in a set of courses. Between the ages of 16 and 18, you will find your “friends for life” and take up the challenges which will craft your future. At SFX you will step into a community that is more than a provider of educational qualifications. We know that getting the most out of life requires patience, clear vision, hard work, resilience, and taking responsibility, not only for ourselves but also for others. Creating the opportunity to share views and values in a secure and respectful setting is a critical part of our SFX mission and helps to foster a strong and mature community. Our goal at SFX is to prepare you for the challenges you will face in a highly competitive world but also carve out time to support you in developing personally and spiritually. We have a track record of achieving outstanding success in a wide range of qualifications but we also have expertise in fostering the vision and values that will create great and ethical leaders of the future. If you join the SFX community we shall not stint in our efforts to fulfill those dual needs. We have a talented staff body that is excited by the transformational power of education and the creativity of young people. All of these attributes contribute to making SFX a unique community and a great place to study. Our Christian mission demands that we recognize the dignity and equality of every individual. SFX actively promotes inclusion and embraces all the legal and moral requirements of our Equality Duty. We are proud of our diversity and support one another in resisting and challenging prejudice and discrimination. The College has worked closely with the National Centre for Diversity to achieve the ‘Investors in Diversity Award. As such, there is an Equality and Diversity group comprising staff and students promoting the aims and objectives inherent in our mission. Each of our subject areas is required to identify how they contribute to our equality and diversity objectives in their lessons and every opportunity is taken to ensure that equality and diversity themes are included in our comprehensive tutorial program and faculty gatherings. Our teachers are experts in their fields/we are specialists in sixth form education we only teach 16-19 so it’s all about that age group – we don’t teach older students or earlier years as in a school with a sixth form only A levels, or Diplomas at Level 3 (equivalent to 3 A levels), Level 2 and 1 (equivalent to GCSEs). there is an excellent pastoral care system. Each student has a Personal Tutor to guide them alongside their subject teachers. We have a specialist learning support team, together with the Designated Safeguarding Officer there is a College Counsellor and a Student Welfare Officer on hand to support students experiencing personal worries or concerns. Student enrichment plays an integral part in our student program at SFX. Examples include: Student Union with student elected President and Vice President representing the students’ needs and interests and contributing to decision making as Student Governors. Sport – including a fully supervised fitness suite, Boys and Girls Football Team, Basketball Team, hula, trampolining, table tennis, box-fit, and rock climbing. Young enterprise students set up and run their own business for a year with assigned roles including as Project Manager, Product Manager, Finance Manager, Marketing Manager, etc. Visiting speakers, educational outings (past have included London, New York, and Paris), visits to university taster days, and trips to theatre, museums & exhibitions. Sixth form colleges can offer you a fresh start to continue your studies in a different environment where you can make new friends. At a sixth form college you can benefit from: The wide range of courses available With the experience of making that step from one institution to another and developing confidence, independence, and maturity you will therefore be well equipped to make the change when going to university or into employment through support systems that are in place to monitor your performance.
