About Me

  1. Established in 1988, Oxford Sixth Form College is one of the UK’s leading independent sixth form colleges for students aged 15-19. Formerly named Oxford Tutorial College, we sustain the tutorial tradition through an average class size of three students and through having no more than six students in an A-Level class. We offer greater flexibility than mainstream schools with over 30 subjects on offer across A-Level, GCSE, and BTEC. For students looking to improve on their results, we also offer specialized, examination board-specific, A-Level retake programs that provide the right environment for you to have the opportunity to improve your results and secure a place at a top university. We are committed to not only providing you with expert tuition but also providing you with the support you need to reach your potential from the moment you make your application. Our students speak of the college environment as being a warm, friendly, and very welcoming place. Whether in the classroom at college or in our boarding houses, all staff provide wonderful guidance and support to ensure students enjoy their time with us and go on to help achieve their personal and academic goals. Our students progress to a wide range of degree programs at top U.K. universities including business management and economics mathematics, engineering and computer science medicine and law art and creative media history and international relations. Our location in the very heart of the city of Oxford, with neighbors including University of Oxford colleges Oriel and Christchurch, is steeped in academic history and one that serves to inspire our students and us to build a successful future. The College offers an approach quite different from that of a traditional school. The key to the Oxford Sixth Form College learning environment is that we aim to provide an alternative to the mainstream. This means that in addition to offering a mainstream, academic, two-year A-Level program, we provide A-Level, BTEC, and GCSE programs of study that in terms of their length, start dates, and combination of academic and vocational subjects are rarely available in mainstream independent schools. We are very much a college preparing young people for the responsibilities of life at university and beyond rather than a school. The culture of the College encourages hard work and a growing sense of responsibility in a supportive environment. From the first meeting with a student at an admissions interview to identify their goals and motivation to providing clear, constructive support, including individual learning plans, during their time with us, we treat each of our students as an individual. Our teaching approach is refreshingly interactive and informal. The support provided by subject tutors is thoughtful and creative, focusing specifically on individual learning styles. Students are encouraged to take an active part in the learning process at every stage. Course material is taught clearly and directly, with careful review and continual practice of previous examination questions. Tutors ensure that students develop a good set of notes and encourage systematic revision. Time is also allowed for an overall subject review as the examinations approach, to check to understand and enable further exam practice. A key part of the Oxford Sixth Form College learning environment is that an active learning style is encouraged and each student may be asked to present material and exchange views with others. This is followed by guidance from the teacher on the interpretation, manipulation, and analysis of the material. Preparation is required. Teaching groups consist of no more than six students in A-Level groups and no more than ten students in the other programs we offer. This small group size enables close discussion of each topic whilst still allowing a high degree of personal attention. Our College is housed in a row of handsome Victorian houses just a few yards from Oxford High Street. The center of Oxford is small enough to explore on foot and is also within easy walking distance of the bus and rail stations. Students can enjoy Oxford’s bookshops, galleries, and museums – many of which are world-class relax and go punting on the river that flows through the city or choose from the many other cultural offers of the city. The main College premises are in King Edward Street, with three further sites within walking distance, all in the heart of the University precinct. We maintain a supervised library well-stocked with essential textbooks and reference materials, and students also have access to a substantial collection of previous examination papers, specifications, and examiners’ reports. Oxford Sixth Form College facilities also include a well-equipped art room and two science laboratories in addition to a biology lab. Between lessons, students can relax in the student common room. There is also an IT suite, where students have Internet access through a fast broadband connection. A wireless network operates throughout the premises. As the College is in a city center location, there are a large number of cafés, sandwich bars and restaurants nearby. We also provide opportunities for joining student clubs and societies, and the academic life of the College is enhanced by a varied range of extra-curricular activities, including cultural visits, music, and sports. At Hillcrest, we deliver a curriculum that works to develop effective, independent learners to meet the challenges of a rapidly changing world. To achieve this staff use a “ten-point outstanding lesson checklist” to plan their lessons, ensuring all lessons enable rapid and sustained progress. The Hillcrest School curriculum meets the specifications of both the National Curriculum programs of study and also the Birmingham Curriculum Statement. View full school

We offer an all-round education which enables each girl to find her strengths and direction in life, whatever her talents, expectation or needs. We take pride in our one-hundred-year roots, in our present, and our future, ensuring that girls are always a part of our community and play a part as citizens within their community. We value the richness that the arts, sciences, humanities, and enterprise subjects bring to a balanced education and our experience as a specialist college has given us particular strengths in languages and sport. We strive at all times to ensure the highest quality academic and enrichment experiences and opportunities. At Kings Norton Girls’ School, each student’s current skills and levels of attainment are assessed on entry through reading, comprehension, and spelling tests, Midyis, and PASS data. We use this information, with any other information from previous schools, to decide whether students require Special Educational Needs or Disability (SEND) support. Through regular assessment, we can identify students who are making less than expected progress for their age and individual circumstances. Kings Norton Girls’ School offers an exciting and innovative curriculum from Year 7 to 13. The curriculum is designed to meet the needs of all students, developing their knowledge and understanding in a range of subjects and honing their skills so that they become successful independent learners during their time at school and beyond. At Kings Norton Girls’ School curriculum departments are arranged into seven faculties: English, Maths, Science, Arts, Humanities, Modern Foreign Languages, and PE. English, Maths, PE, and Modern Foreign Languages are single discipline faculties, the Arts, Humanities, and Science are multidisciplinary. Life at school for a Kings Norton Girl is diverse, exciting, and full of opportunity. Learning is central to all that we do but there’s so much more than just lessons. During a girl’s life at the school, between years 7 to 13, all girls will have opportunities to participate in educational visits both in the UK and abroad, join one of over forty extra-curricular clubs, gain leadership experience, take part in our exciting cross-curricular or health days and play an active role in supporting the success of their house. Everyone can improve intelligence and the ability to learn. Intelligence and learning are not fixed but being open to challenges, resilient in the face of setbacks, and putting in the individual effort will help us to develop. We will help your daughter to adopt this growth mindset and show parents how they can also help to do this. View full school
  11. Bsix is proud to be a comprehensive sixth form college offering courses in a wide range of subjects and at all levels. We believe that all young people can achieve high standards. We are big enough to offer such a breadth of courses but also small enough to give our students individual care, encouragement, and attention. Bsix College aims to support progression for all students whether that be onto the next level or year of their course, onto university, apprenticeship, or the world of work. We try to keep in touch with as many of our alumni as possible to find out what they are doing now. To read about some of their fascinating journeys. The individuals who make up BSix's teaching and support staff are key to our goal of raising standards and achievement for all students, and we see investing in staff members' welfare and development as a crucial and complementary part of this process. The training covers all aspects of the Equality act and will help ensure you are aware of related legislation. The training will also help you understand your obligations and raise your awareness of disability and equality issues. Bsix is committed to" the value of research for staff, students and the College. We have had a researcher-in-residence in partnership with the Institute of Education. Our teachers are encouraged to undertake action research. University researchers often use BSix as a subject to investigate. Currently, we are part of a study being carried out by the University of Leicester and the Open University called "Living multicultural". Researchers from the two universities visit the College regularly to observe how our students, from widely diverse backgrounds, interact with each other. Below are copies of published research about BSix or by BSix staff. Bsix is committed to the professional development of its staff. In particular, it is seeking to integrate professional development in everyday practice rather than relying on big, "one-off", events that are often externally delivered. Our ambition is to have teachers teaching teachers so that learning takes place all the time and as much informally as formally. In addition, it is crucial that we regard teaching and learning as high-level intellectual activities and we keep continually up to date with the newest developments in both policy and practice. The Student Development Centre aims to ensure that all students have access to support when needed to reach their potential. The department supports young people with a wide variety of needs including Special Educational Needs, Mental Health and Emotional Wellbeing Difficulties, Looked After Children, Vulnerable Young Adults, Social and Behavioural Difficulties, and attendance issues. Young people with SEND, including Social, Emotional, and Mental Health Difficulties, are allocated to Student Achievement Officers or Student Support Officers. Individualized support for young people with SEND is planned by completing SEND Plans and Individual Learning Plans, where SMART Targets are set at the beginning of each term. Individual young people may be referred to the Safeguarding or Counselling Team if appropriate. Individualized support packages are implemented for young people with SEND, which include: In-class support, Small Group Sessions, 1 to 1 sessions, Reading Group, Peer Mentoring, Personal Mentoring, Group Mentoring, Work Skills, Speech and Language Therapy Youth Club, Advice and guidance, Art Therapy, Drama Therapy, Exam Support and/or intervention from external agencies. Student Support Officers and Student Achievement Officers regularly attend Parents Evenings, departmental meetings, liaising closely with teaching staff and parents regarding the progress of the young people. 17.

Through our outstanding facilities and dedicated teaching staff, Connell aims to provide each student with the tools to pursue their passions beyond education and into employment. To this end, the College is driven by the shared values of hard work, integrity, and passion. We recognize and assess every student’s academic potential on an individual basis, ensuring that we develop not only their academic skills but also their confidence and self-belief. As a result of this dynamic, aspirational, and supportive approach, our students become ambassadors for their local and wider communities, developing all the while in an ecosystem that nurtures and inspires excellence. At Connell Sixth Form College we also embrace these values and they form a very important part of the Connell experience. In addition to the BFET values, Connell also holds trust and respect as the foundation stones of this College. All members of the College work within this ethos. It makes our rule book very brief! All actions and words must be both trustworthy and respectful. If they are not, they are unacceptable to this College and the students and staff within it. The members of the Governing Body of Connell Sixth Form College are from all walks of life and they bring knowledge, skills, and experience to the Governing Body which continue to prove invaluable in the development of this new College. A Governor’s role is as a ‘critical friend’ to the College. Governors do not manage the College on a day-to-day basis but work as a group to develop the strategic vision of the College liaising closely with the Principal, Leadership Team, Staff, and Students. They provide valuable insights, and work as a sounding board, for ideas and plans to develop and enhance the provision of education at Connell Sixth Form College. Their role also includes the oversight of activities in the College and some Governors act as ‘Link Governors’ to gain specific knowledge of the various areas of the College. Through this, they keep the Governing Body informed on all aspects of the College. Governors are ultimately responsible for how the College is performing. This College is for any local student who wishes to go on to University, a higher level apprenticeship, or an A-level or BTEC entry job. Remember we offer enrichment programs and you will be taught by staff of the highest caliber. We will ensure that you are happy and well supported and feel part of the Connell community. 24. Every student is enrolled in one of our specialist Graduate Programmes, which are designed to give our students the edge when applying for university or starting in their careers. You can find out more about these programs by clicking here. Although examination success is essential in today’s highly competitive global job market, at Christ the King we put great store on educating the whole person. Every one of our students is an individual. Our college motto is ‘Ut Vitam Habeant’, which means ‘that they may have life. We encourage every student to develop as a whole person and to be actively engaged in the College and the community so that they may have life to the full. As a Catholic Sixth Form College, we have a distinctive ethos which underpins all our work and is a key factor in our success. While we put great stress on qualifications, hard work, effort, and academic success, we’re about far more than that. We are here to educate young people in the widest sense, developing the whole person so that all our students realize their full potential. We not only want our students to leave us as rounded, thoughtful, caring, and confident adults equipped with the skills and attitudes they need to make a success in their lives, we also want them to be ready to make a positive contribution to society. Through our character education program, The CTK Graces, we help our students to develop the traits and attributes of grit, respect, assurance, curiosity, endeavor, and self-control so that they have the qualities they need to be discerning and to thrive in the highly competitive world that awaits them. Our tutorial and pastoral support systems ensure that every young person is nurtured and valued as an individual. Our college is underpinned by values of mutual respect and positive encouragement. All our young people take part in a learning program in which they are invited to consider the personal, spiritual, and moral issues they will face as they move into adult life. We are delighted that our distinctive ethos was recognized by education inspectorate Ofsted in its most recent inspection: ‘The College fosters a spirit of generosity and love.’ At Christ the King, our mission is a simple one: to help our students be the best that they can be. Excellence runs through everything we do. We offer an elite education – but to all. As part of our local community, we welcome anyone who can benefit from our demanding, but inclusive, education. As a long-established Catholic Sixth-Form College, we’re specialists in helping young people achieve their full potential and catering to the specific needs of sixth-formers. We aspire to excellence in everything we do, whether that’s teaching and creating an exciting, aspirational learning environment for our students, or caring for, and supporting, our young people as they make the transition to adulthood and life beyond college. We combine tradition and a fine academic record with innovation. We embrace all the exciting opportunities that the modern world has to offer our students, but we also take pride in our tradition of high expectations and academic rigor. We’re not afraid to demand the best of our students – and they rarely let us down. Our dedicated, specialist staff have the skills to nurture and develop young people and help them achieve the qualifications they need to move on to the next stage of their life, whether that’s a top university or the first step in their working life and future career. College life is an exciting one for our students, and the switch from the more regimented, restricting school environment provides the perfect introduction to adult life. But at Christ the King, the learning environment is a structured one. We expect much of our young people, and we ensure that they achieve all that they are capable of – and more.
  25. A range of Assistive Technologies and Software is available to assist students in accessing the curriculum includes Laptops, Netbooks, Dictaphones, hearing loops, exam reading pens, Dragon, Read & Write Gold, Coloured Overlays, Digital Coloured Overlays, and a growing collection of digital textbooks. Bsix is fully accessible with lift access in A Block, B Block, C Block, and Sports Hall. The college has a mobile hoist and track hoist, and a room suitable for physiotherapy and stretching. Communication and engagement of parents of young people requiring support are important to the Department and are facilitated by regular Parent Forums, morning, evening & weekend events for information sharing and collaboration with external agencies. Individualized support packages are reviewed regularly in several ways. Additional Learning Support Termly Reviews are held three times a year to review the academic progress, SMART targets, attendance, and punctuality of each young person with SEND. Student Support Officers and Student Achievement Officers regularly attend Parents Evenings, departmental meetings, liaising closely with teaching staff and parents regarding the progress of the young people. We recognize the student voice through termly feedback and encourage our young people to voice opinions to the student union, teaching staff, and SMT.
