    Tohoku University

In 1911, Vice Minister of Education Masataro Sawayanagi moved to Sendai to become Tohoku University's first president. Sawayanagi firmly believed that academic research should be integrated with education. He also believed that a university should not discriminate based on class or gender. Following this principle, Tohoku University accepted graduates from technical and higher regular schools. Despite opposition from the government at that time, it became Japan's first university to admit female students in 1913. The ancient castle grounds of Sendai's famous feudal warlord Masamune Date, are home to the majority of Tohoku University's facilities. The primeval forest served as a natural fortress for Sendai castle, which was built in 1602. It was protected under the strict supervision of the Sendai clan. This protection continued under the auspices of the national military following the Meiji Restoration in 1868. When World War 2 ended in 1945, the area was home to the occupation forces' military base. It remained off-limits to civilians for many years. The Tohoku University Botanical Gardens was founded for research and education on Aobayama mountain in 1958. Due to its preservation for 400 years, it is now home to flora and fauna of priceless academic value. In 1972, the garden was designated a natural monument, a first for a national university botanical garden. It is one of only three national university botanical gardens in Japan. Today, Aobayama's 400-year history of natural beauty endures next door to the thriving metropolis of Sendai city, home to more than one million people. In more than 100 years since Tohoku University was founded in 1907, the constant goal has been to become one of the world's great research universities. As the 21st President of this university, I pledge to continue pursuing international excellence in education. We take great pride in the past successes of our students and faculty. Their innovations in science and engineering have helped make the world a better place in which to live. Through the 3-11 disaster, we learned that there is so much more we can do to develop new technologies to make the entire world safer and more environmentally friendly. At the same time, while medical support is critical in the aftermath of a disaster, we also know that the arts give us the medium of expression to heal the human heart. Thus at Tohoku University, we are committed to graduating students with a well rounded, complete education.
  2. Today, the Shonai area in the Tohoku region's top west corner is brimming with a mood of creativity and enterprise. This new spirit has given rise to a new university. The twentieth century was the era that focused on money and material goods and capital and the market rule, but the twenty-first century is the era of people and mind/heart that we call "Koeki." This will be a world in which children will live as they should, and people as humanely as they possibly can. In our university, students will broaden their minds and deepen their specialist knowledge through our education to respond to these changes in social ethnography and contribute to the harmonious development of cultural exchange, welfare, and economics. Koski University was initially established in 2001 with the enthusiastic demand from the local people and government. In the beginning, we started with the invaluable assistance of Keio University. We started with a single department and a single faculty. By 2014, two departments - Departments of Business/ Policy Management and Cross-Cultural Studies - were set up, the latter of which the International Liberal Arts Program was newly created to develop a global point of view. We received a COC grant from the Ministry of Education to pursue revitalization and recreation of the local community. We strive to contribute to society and local communities through our unique educational system and learning methodology from a global standpoint in the coming years.
  3. Tohoku Gakuin was founded in 1886 as Sendai Theological Seminary by Masayoshi Oshikawa and William E. Hoy, a missionary. Today, 132 years later, based on Christian ideals and ensuring academic freedom, Tohoku Gakuin University (TGU) aims to provide its students with an environment that allows them to pursue the truth and develop to their full potential. The world today is changing dramatically socially, politically, economically, and in other areas as well. Our mission is to send forth graduates who have a global perspective, individuals who are responsible and can make decisions and act upon them. To this end, TGU is committed to nurturing each student's character while also providing the education necessary so that they can integrate the knowledge of their discipline and interface with others. TGU has six faculties, and a graduate school from the humanities and social sciences to engineering and is the largest private university in the Tohoku and Hokkaido area. Since its foundation, TGU has been a place where people from different nations and cultures have come to study together, facilitating and contributing to the increased understanding of each culture represented. It is a tradition we are proud to continue. In order to increase understanding of our institution, in 2009, Tohoku Gakuin University announced the following "three-part plan" which outlines: The principles underlying the type of students we seek to graduate The educational programs employed to this end The types of students we seek to attract. TGU seeks graduate students with a Bachelor of Art's degree based on the following guiding principles. Students are expected to abide by these principles to pursue their degree via the prescribed academic curriculum. To live a good life, students should be aware of the ideas of those who came before them, particularly the word of the Bible and its relevance to modern society. Students should develop an awareness of the value of university education and the lifelong pursuit of knowledge. The fundamental communication skills, logical argumentation, information, and mathematical literacy constitute the foundation of such a pursuit. Students should gain a systematic understanding of essential knowledge and the critical lines of reasoning specific to their major of study. Students should develop a view of the world, and the self about history, society, and the natural order. They should also approach the specialized knowledge and reasoning patterns gained in their major field of study from a broad-minded perspective. Students should strive to apply the knowledge, skills, and temperament gained as a result of their academic endeavors in a holistic fashion to the identification and resolution of various issues. While studying at Tohoku Gakuin University (TGU), students may choose to participate in any of the numerous extra-curricular cultural and athletic activities, which play a vital developmental role in the lives of TGU students. Various events are planned and carried out by student groups, including the annual university festivals held on each campus. Every year, additional culture clubs, sports clubs, and circles are founded in response to students' growing interests.

  13. View full university
