Ever since, our university has consistently offered educational programs that enable pharmacy graduates to contribute to society successfully. The Department of Pharmaceutical Life Sciences aims to train students to acquire a broad knowledge of pharmaceutical sciences and medicine to make a valuable contribution to society, and the Department of Pharmaceutical Sciences nurtures competent pharmacists with a higher level of professional skills. Department of Medicine aims to cultivate doctors that can acquire advanced expertise and skill to contribute to the Tohoku region's healthcare with enthusiasm. When establishing the university, the founders primarily aimed to train students to be pharmacists who could contribute to the local community. However, one of their larger aims was to contribute to human beings' health and welfare through the education and research of pharmaceutical sciences and desired to push forward with the pursuit of truth. This spirit was condensed into Giichi Takayanagi' s appeal to "The pursuit of truth," engraved into a monument as the founding spirit of the former Tohoku Pharmaceutical University, and are guiding us even now as Tohoku Medical and Pharmaceutical University started with the establishment of a new department of medicine. The pursuit of truth is the starting point of a university's mission to educate and research. Search for truth, discover problems, and solve them based on a broad perspective Have a warm heart and a high sense of ethics as individuals dealing with human life and health, and who also possess high-level professional knowledge and skills, and contribute to society Nurture friendship, shape personality, understand different cultures, and act from an international perspective in their interactions with others.
- Today's Showa Pharmaceutical University (SPU) was preceded by the Showa Women's Pharmaceutical Junior College, founded in 1930 by a group of students from a women's pharmacy school who overcame several hardships and won the backing of faculty and a benefactor to have the status of their old school raised to that of a pharmaceutical junior college. With students at the core of its establishment and no real "owners," the school's development has always been supported through the joint efforts of faculty, students, parents, and alumni. Fostered by this school history, faculty and students enjoy a very close relationship at SPU, where it is tradition to have a family-like atmosphere. Pharmacists' authority and responsibilities have increased as the separation of dispensaries from medical practice have made further progress in Japan in recent years, resulting in the need for well-qualified pharmacists who can contribute to team medicine in medical care settings. Starting in fiscal 2006, SPU adopted a six-year educational system. The entire university is committed to nurturing pharmacists who combine a high level of expertise in pharmaceutical products with a definite sense of ethics and a deep sensitivity for empathizing with patients. In particular, one of the major distinguishing characteristics of SPU is the ability of all of its students to receive an education in advanced clinical pharmacy while undertaking in-service training as part of medical teams at leading university hospitals thanks to a partnership with St. Marianna University School of Medicine, which has three university hospitals and one affiliated hospital in neighboring KanagawaPrefecture. With a 76-year history since its establishment, SPU takes pride in its tradition as a distinguished pharmaceutical university, in its nationally recognized facilities, its highly enthusiastic instructional staff, as well as its verdant campus ground. Backed by these assets, SPU has developed a structure for living up to the expectations of young people who aspire to enter pharmacology and fully meet society's demands. SPU aims to be an open university that moves forward together with the community in line with the school's mission to be a locally-rooted educational institution. SPU will pursue the ideal form for a 21st-century university through various opportunities for interaction with residents, including opening university facilities to the public and holding open symposia. As part of its effort to promote lifelong education, SPU, together with the Shoyaku Alumni Association, sponsors open courses authorized by the Japan Pharmacists Education Center. Pharmacists who take the courses receive credits for pharmacist certification from the Center.

- Kyoto Pharmaceutical University was initially established as a private German school founded by young scholars trained by the German educator Rudolf Lehmann to teach Western medicine and pharmaceutics in the German language. The University is the second oldest private pharmacy school in Japan with a long history and tradition. We celebrated our 130th anniversary in 2014. As expressed in our motto "Philosophia et Praktikos," the University's founding principles are to be independent and self-reliant, commit to lifelong learning, and put the lessons into practice. Over the years, more than 22,000 graduates have pursued careers in the pharmaceutical industry, hospitals, pharmacies, universities, and government agencies, where they have been recognized for excellence. "Philosophia et Praktikos," a funding principle of the Kyoto Pharmaceutical University (KPU), is based on graduate education at KPU. Graduate education aims to increase the ability of and competence about becoming a leader in basic and clinical pharmaceutical sciences. For this goal, each graduate course program is shaped to facilitate the pursuit of original research in collaboration with laboratories at KPU and universities and research institutions abroad. Through these international research activities, the original and creative research ability, an essential requirement to be a leader in any field, including pharmaceutical sciences, is acquired. Ten years have passed since the historic reform in pharmacy education in 2006, in which six-year programs were implemented. During this period, the University established a six-year education program that integrates pre-pharmacy, basic pharmacy, and specialized pharmacy courses laboratory and practical course rotations in hospitals, pharmacies, and thesis research. The infrastructure supporting the program, such as the new education building, was also completed. The goal of our six-year program is to develop individuals well-versed in Science, Art, and Humanity, that is, Pharmacist-Scientist. Most of the previous four-year pharmacy education programs emphasized "substances" that are drugs. However, we recognize that advanced medical science and technology alone cannot provide high-quality healthcare with safety and comfort. Medical professionals must have empathy for their patients. With this in mind, the University aims to educate Pharmacist-Scientist with a strong sense of benevolence in addition to specialized knowledge and techniques in pharmacy. Until 2016, approximately 2,000 students have graduated from the six-year program. In addition to the abovementioned career choices, some graduates have chosen to work in the health-related food industry. Graduates actively participate in team-based healthcare, community-based healthcare, development of new drugs, and healthcare system reform. They are expected to make significant contributions to the advancement of healthcare and support systems to meet the new era's needs. As the six-year program was implemented, we also set up graduate education that complements the undergraduate pharmacy education. We have established a four-year graduate program that builds upon the six-year undergraduate program to develop future leaders (pharmacists with doctorate degrees) in medical practice, the pharmaceutical industry, and government administration. The program offers four tracks: the Basic Pharmaceutical Sciences track the Clinical Pharmacy track the Cancer Professionals track (in collaboration with medical universities) the Regulatory Science track (in collaboration with the Pharmaceuticals and Medical Devices Agency) In this program, students are guided to pursue original research following the tradition at this University to advance interdisciplinary and translational research in collaboration with laboratories with distinct expertise and study at universities and research institutions abroad. Through these efforts, our new program will help develop leaders in the field of basic and clinical pharmaceutical sciences. We believe that the graduates from our program will contribute to the six-year pharmacy education system's success in the future.

Besides, GPU is characterized by highly qualified teachers, high-quality research, and bright students. Our faculty members have developed a cutting-edge curriculum, which, when coupled with life-long learning, will provide our graduates with the requisite professional foundation to practice the profession of pharmacy at a too high level for many decades to come. In the Department of Pharmacy, we strive to develop students who have the skills, knowledge, and professionalism regarding the dosage, dispensing, and patient care under clinical pharmacy practices. We stress a humanistic approach based on high ethical standards. Some students also work as civil servants in public health, private companies, and industries that focus on pharmaceutical research. Through an extended six-year curriculum, students acquire standard skill sets and move on to the acquisition of more advanced skills through internships at our pharmacy, retail pharmacies, and those located in hospitals. Especially, GPU has established more profound relationships with Pharmaceutical University of China and Zhejiang University by exchanging faculty members or students. We also established overseas scholarships for undergraduate and graduate students to study abroad using the foundation donated by an alumnus, Mr. Hajime Murayama, in 2013. By these scholarships, students have been sent to the University of Florida and developed a cultural understanding.
