Tohoku Gakuin University, Tsuchitoi Campus

Tohoku Gakuin was founded in 1886 as Sendai Theological Seminary by Masayoshi Oshikawa and William E. Hoy, a missionary. Today, 132 years later, based on Christian ideals and ensuring academic freedom, Tohoku Gakuin University (TGU) aims to provide its students with an environment that allows them to pursue the truth and develop to their full potential.

The world today is changing dramatically socially, politically, economically, and in other areas as well. Our mission is to send forth graduates who have a global perspective, individuals who are responsible and can make decisions and act upon them. To this end, TGU is committed to nurturing each student's character while also providing the education necessary so that they can integrate the knowledge of their discipline and interface with others. TGU has six faculties, and a graduate school from the humanities and social sciences to engineering and is the largest private university in the Tohoku and Hokkaido area. Since its foundation, TGU has been a place where people from different nations and cultures have come to study together, facilitating and contributing to the increased understanding of each culture represented. It is a tradition we are proud to continue.

In order to increase understanding of our institution, in 2009, Tohoku Gakuin University announced the following "three-part plan" which outlines:

• The principles underlying the type of students we seek to graduate
• The educational programs employed to this end
• The types of students we seek to attract.

TGU seeks graduate students with a Bachelor of Art's degree based on the following guiding principles. Students are expected to abide by these principles to pursue their degree via the prescribed academic curriculum.

• To live a good life, students should be aware of the ideas of those who came before them, particularly the word of the Bible and its relevance to modern society.
• Students should develop an awareness of the value of university education and the lifelong pursuit of knowledge. The fundamental communication skills, logical argumentation, information, and mathematical literacy constitute the foundation of such a pursuit.
• Students should gain a systematic understanding of essential knowledge and the critical lines of reasoning specific to their major of study.
• Students should develop a view of the world, and the self about history, society, and the natural order. They should also approach the specialized knowledge and reasoning patterns gained in their major field of study from a broad-minded perspective.
• Students should strive to apply the knowledge, skills, and temperament gained as a result of their academic endeavors in a holistic fashion to the identification and resolution of various issues.

While studying at Tohoku Gakuin University (TGU), students may choose to participate in any of the numerous extra-curricular cultural and athletic activities, which play a vital developmental role in the lives of TGU students. Various events are planned and carried out by student groups, including the annual university festivals held on each campus. Every year, additional culture clubs, sports clubs, and circles are founded in response to students' growing interests.
