  3. Georgian Court University is a coeducational, forward-thinking institution that encourages intellectual inquiry, moral analysis, and social dialogue. Georgian Court University is committed to delivering a comprehensive liberal arts education in the Roman Catholic tradition. Since its inception in 1908, the college has evolved to offer various academic programs that give you the tools to succeed in today’s world. As a coeducational institution, we continue to grow while maintaining a small-scale setting that provides a significant value: a community based on respect, integrity, justice, compassion, and service. Each GCU student shapes our experiential academic environment, making for a vibrant environment of teachers and learners. GCU boasts more than 30 undergraduate degrees, ten graduate degrees, and various certificate programs for existing professionals looking to advance their careers. GCU is ranked by U.S. News & World Report as one of the best regional universities—and one of the best colleges for veterans. Whether you are in the classroom or participating in a field experience, our priority is to deliver a personalized education that meets your personal needs and career aspirations. That comes from distinguished faculty members and the 12:1 student-to-faculty ratio—in addition to the engaging curriculum—so your education at GCU is valuable for the rest of your life. Founded and sponsored by the Sisters of Mercy, Georgian Court University is located in Lakewood, New Jersey. Set on a magnificent 156-acre estate formerly belonging to financier George Jay Gould, the campus is conveniently situated 60 miles from New York and Philadelphia, and only 10 miles from the Jersey Shore. Bordering Lake Carasaljo, the site is a National Historic Landmark with alluring statuary, beautiful architecture, and lush gardens. After a long history as a women’s college with coeducational graduate programs and undergraduate evening programs, Georgian Court became fully coeducational in 2013. Georgian Court University provides comprehensive liberal arts education in the Roman Catholic tradition while maintaining its particular historic concern for women. The university offers a broad enough curriculum to be truly liberal, yet specialized enough to provide in-depth preparation for careers or further study. The Georgian Court atmosphere is a small college ambiance in a technologically advanced, highly esteemed university setting. The university offers a nurturing campus environment with individualized attention and guidance centered around the mission and the core Mercy values of respect, integrity, justice, compassion, and service. The faculty is committed to teaching and individual mentoring, as 92% hold doctorates or terminal degrees in their field. They are dedicated and caring educators and experts in their respective industries, leading more than 30 undergraduate degrees, 11 graduate degrees, and various certificates. GCU has three schools: the School of Arts & Sciences, the School of Business & Digital Media, and the School of Education. Georgian Court University prepares students for life beyond the campus gates. By senior year, 90% of undergraduate students have participated or plan to participate in some practicum, internship, field experience, co-op, or clinical placement. Also, undergraduates are required to participate in service-learning. And 92% of seniors rated their entire GCU educational experience as “excellent” or “good.” College can be exciting and challenging. Being away from home, being exposed to new ideas, and meeting new people are all part of the college experience. During this time, you may also experience stress, depression, anxiety, or other issues as you cope with academic and financial pressures. Conflicts with family, friends, and professors can make your time at college overwhelming. The Counseling Center is available to all GCU students and offers support to help you deal with any challenges you face during your time at GCU. Transfer your academic foundation from Georgian Court University into a rewarding career in the “real” world. The Office of Career Services, Corporate Engagement, and Continuing Education helps you bridge the gap from being a student to becoming a professional and progressing through every stage of your career. Our office has a wide array of tools and resources to help you find jobs and internships, identify and market your skillset, network, compile a résumé, and prepare for interviews at each career transition point you encounter. Whether you are a current GCU student or an alum, be sure to take advantage of these life-long free services. Experiential learning allows you to gain knowledge, develop skills, and clarify values through direct experience and focused reflection. By exploring your interests and abilities, you will make a more informed choice about your career options. These experiences will allow you to observe and apply concepts that you are learning in the classroom to real-life settings and also make you more competitive in today’s job market. At GCU, we require that you have two experiential learning experiences to graduate. This can include service-learning (click above), internships (click above), or a travel or study abroad program. One must be service learning in a designated course other than the First-Year Seminar. The other can be an internship, practicum or field study, study abroad experience, or a second service learning. An internship combines supervised work experience with a structured academic plan that includes learning objectives. An internship may be full-time or part-time, paid, or unpaid. This is an excellent way to gain work experience related to your major and is one of the essential credentials you can list on your résumé. Though a maximum of one internship can be counted toward the experiential learning requirement, you can participate in as many internships as you would like. View full university
