About Me

  1. Founded in 1889, Missouri Military Academy is an accredited non-profit independent private school. MMA offers both boarding and day school options for boys, grades 7-12, and a variety of summer camps. Missouri Military Academy is located in the Midwest on 288 acres in Mexico, Missouri, approximately 2 hours from St. Louis and 2.5 hours from Kansas City. Structure brings order to every day. Responsibility develops personal accountability. And love creates self-confidence. A boy’s apathy surrenders to the excitement, his complacency gives way to excellence, and self-discipline becomes a habit. Because we are a small school, our faculty and staff mentors share a personal and professional relationship with each cadet and with each other. Working together, faculty and staff will get a deep understanding of the many facets of your boy’s personality and intellect, learn how to motivate him and how to collectively best develop his unique gifts. Missouri Military Academy’s 4 x 4 block schedule immerses each boy in 4 courses per semester. This enables our students to learn eight courses per year thoroughly and gives them the time they require each day for at least one hour of quiet study and homework. Missouri Military Academy leans on the strength of several regional academic partners who help us provide an educational experience that’s second to none. MMA understands that middle school students are curious and willing to learn those things they find useful. As they become young adults, they are interested in solving “real-life” problems. Our small classes enable our Middle School faculty to have a closer relationship with the students, enhancing their education. Most students attend classes with others in their grade. Classes in our Middle School are small, averaging only ten students per class. We enroll students in classes based on their grade and achievement level, then provide the attention that will guide them to success. We recognize and embrace the fact that middle school-aged boys are motivated by different things - they are challenged by projects, hands-on learning, human interaction, and high expectations. Our goal is to allow students to advance as far as they can academically while maintaining a high level of achievement. We believe that all students can achieve their grade level if provided the proper academic support, classroom structure, and challenging curriculum. If a student demonstrates advanced ability in a particular academic area, he may be assigned to a class in another grade. Mandatory athletics participation throughout the school year fulfill the physical education requirement for our middle school students. Boys have much energy, and we understand that they can focus more fully on their academic work if they can participate in fun, challenging athletics.

Today, Lincoln University's role in the education of Missourians and others and its service to stakeholders throughout the state, the nation, and across the globe is well recognized. Lincoln University continues to serve the needs of its diverse student body through a tradition of offering innovative programs that makes the college experience special. At the close of the Civil War, soldiers and officers of the 62nd United States Colored Infantry, stationed at Fort McIntosh, Texas, but composed primarily of Missourians, took steps to establish an educational institution Jefferson City, Missouri, which they named Lincoln Institute. The following stipulations were set for the school: The institution shall be designed for the unique benefit of the freed African-Americans. It shall be located in the state of Missouri. Its fundamental idea shall be to combine study and labor. Members of the 62nd Colored Infantry contributed $5,000. This was supplemented by approximately $1,400, given by the 65th Colored Infantry. On January 14, 1866, Lincoln Institute was formally established under an organization committee. By June of the same year, it incorporated, and the committee became a Board of Trustees. Richard Baxter Foster, a former first lieutenant in the 62nd Infantry, was named the first principal of Lincoln Institute. On September 17, 1866, the school opened its doors to the first class in an old frame building in Jefferson City. In 1870, the school began to receive aid from the state of Missouri for teacher training. In 1871, Lincoln Institute moved to the present campus. College-level work was added to the curriculum in 1877, and passage of the Normal School Law permitted Lincoln graduates to teach for life in Missouri without further examination. Lincoln Institute formally became a state institution in 1879 with the deeding of the property to the state. Under the second Morrill Act of 1890, Lincoln became a land grant institution, and the following year industrial and agricultural courses were added to the curriculum. In 1921, the Missouri Legislature passed a bill introduced by Walthall M. Moore, the first black American to serve in that body, which changed the name from Lincoln Institute to Lincoln University and created a Board of Curators to govern the University. The North Central Association of Colleges and Secondary Schools accredited the high school division in 1925, the teacher-training program in 1926, and the four-year college of arts and sciences in 1934. Graduate instruction was begun in the summer session of 1940, with majors in education and history and minors in English, history, and sociology. A School of Journalism was established in February 1942. In 1954, the United States Supreme Court handed down its ruling in Brown v. Board of Education. Lincoln University responded by opening its doors to all applicably meeting its entrance criteria. Today, Lincoln University serves a diverse clientele, both residential and non-residential, engages in a variety of research projects, and offers numerous public service programs in addition to providing an array of academic programs.

Lincoln University was founded in 1866 by the 62nd and 65th United States Colored Infantries and their white officers, for the unique benefit of freed African Americans. Our Opportunities for Undergraduate Research Experience program gives you the chance to work alongside your favorite professor on a meaningful research project. Recent examples include research on how trees can remove pollutants from the ground (phytoremediation), how nanoparticles could more efficiently deliver medicine through the body, and how smartphones could be used to improve emergency response systems. Whether competing with race cars or rockets, concrete canoes, or robots, as a member of one of these student-led teams, you will learn the organizational problem-solving process essential for the successful development of a market-ready product. You will network with industry professionals and students from competing schools alike, forming personal and professional relationships that can lead to a rewarding career. View full university
