      3. Kaohsiung City Government, to promote adult education and implement lifelong learning, established the Open University of Kaohsiung in February 1997, and started student recruitment in August 1997. As the University accepts students with any educational background, has no entrance examination, and provides distance learning, it has become an efficient way for adults who wish to obtain academic degrees. More than 6,000 students have graduated from the University, making it an essential center for adult education in southern Taiwan. The University started with five departments. Law and Political Science, Foreign Languages and Literature, Industrial and Business Administration, Mass Communication, and Culture and Arts. In line with industrial Development in southern Taiwan, the Department of Technology Management was established in 2006 to nurture the industry's service and management talents. In addition to the six departments, a General Education Center provides a general education curriculum with varied learning opportunities catering to the public. Students may select to learn through distance learning courses via the Internet, television or radio, and face-to-face learning on campus. Besides, in response to the trend of mobile learning, the University established items in 2012 to provide cross-platform and cross-device learning, allowing students to watch (or listen to) distance learning courses. Students may access learning materials through their tablets, personal computers, or smartphones at all times, making it a far-reaching learning environment, completely free from the constraints of space and time. The University has one professor, six associate professors, and 15 assistant professors. The 22 full-time teachers are well-versed in both theoretical and practical aspects. We also have more than 100 adjunct teachers to provide varied, flexible courses and teachings. Students can manage their work, education, and family obligations concurrently by using face-to-face learning and the digital learning system. This allows them to experience the joy of attending college, enrich and enhance their quality of life, and increase their career competitiveness. The OUK has six departments and one center, namely: Department of Law & Political Science Department of Industrial & Business Administration Department of Mass Communication Department of Foreign Languages & Literature Department of Culture and Art Department of Technology Management General Education Center The OUK is located in the industrial area with the highest revenue in Taiwan, Hsiao-Kang Linhai Industrial Park, in Kaohsiung City, a beautiful harbor city with 1.5 million citizens in the South. The OUK is advantageous in vitalizing the adult education market as a social education institute. Hence, it is essential to develop a tight partnership with urban human resources revitalization and Kaohsiung cultivation. 4. The National University of Kaohsiung (NUK), the only national university instituted in the millennium in Taiwan, was found on February 1, 2000. Following the government's industrial development policy and to promote the establishment of the Asia-Pacific Regional Operation Center (including Southern Taiwan Science Park, Kaohsiung Multifunctional Commerce and Trade Park, and International Warehousing and Processing Transit Center), we assist in upgrading and transforming traditional industries and train professionals in technology and management. The three dots in the emblem represent an abstract image of the Chinese character. Different sizes of the spots, from small to large, are like the growing process of a seed. It also symbolizes waves, which imply the surging force that moves forward. The emblem is designed based on the Chinese character rather than English words because we want to preserve our cultural features and ethnic origin when NUK becomes internationally well-known. The bright orange color delivers the intense, optimistic, and innovative impressions of NUK. Grey is the most tolerant and steadiest color that can match any other color. This emblem displays NUK's features: vigor, optimism, innovation, steadiness, and tolerance, which are also essential learning attitudes that students have to develop in addition to the knowledge in the textbooks. By utilizing our solid academic research as a strong backup, we look forward to becoming an academic think tank that can help the government develop industries and policy-making and the critical academic force to assist enterprises' growth. NUK has novel resources and equipment, young research and teaching staff members, high-quality student counseling mechanisms, and efficient administrative teams, making all teachers and students teach and learn in a diversified, high-tech, and comfortable environment. NUK enthusiastically upgrade our academic research, conduct virtual academic interchange with other universities in Taiwan or abroad, such as arranging students' exchange programs and faculty members' mutual visits to increase the opportunities for learning and collaboration. By establishing "The Institute of Kaohsiung," we have formed a strategic alliance with six other universities in Kaohsiung City and integrate and share all the resources and characteristics. NUK encourages the stimulation of teaching and research staff and students' research and development capacity to fulfill the industries' goal of putting theories into practice. We have signed strategic alliance agreements with different institutions, such as China Steel Cooperation, Metal Industries Research and Development Centre, National Museum of Marine Biology and Aquarium, Zuoying Branch of Kaohsiung Armed Forces General Hospital, Kaohsiung Veterans General Hospital, and National Applied Research Laboratories. Besides, we also cooperate with the coordinators of different enterprises in our Advanced Business Incubation Center and deepen the collaborations with Southern Taiwan Science Park and surrounding industries in the processing and industrial zones. Based on the goal of building "a green NUK with environmental sustainability," NUK was Taiwan's first green university, which signed the Talloires Declaration and was elected as the "Model Green University" by the Ministry of Education in 2009. We were also awarded as one of the "Promote Environmental Protection Meritorious Schools" by the Environmental Protection Administration, Executive Yuan in 2010, and were appointed as the "Wetlands of National Importance" by the Construction and Planning Agency, Ministry of the Interior in 2011. NUK aims to promote the construction of a university town and build a green campus without walls. By increasing the university community's quality and emphasizing knowledge culture, arts, and leisure, we hope to deepen the development of the greater Kaohsiung area.
      5. The University Motto is, "Perfect – Seeking for ever greater perfection. The badge is round like the earth, symbolizing both the school's internationalization and the perfection of Chinese culture. The three inner circles over the school's three areas – catering, hotel, and tourism- and interlock combine three concepts – being prospective, practical, and international. The entire badge's appearance originates from the school flower – kapok, which looks tall, straight, graceful, and grand with brilliant colors, symbolizing the school's disposition of enthusiasm and heroism. Three extending bars below the rounds indicate the vigorous growth and development of the school. The middle part of the pattern is like the head of an elephant, an animal with the spirit of being perfect, honest, diligent, and modest. The simple colors with green as the base color mean infinite vitality and represent the school's energy. The university logo is based on the original pattern, but more elaborate, to indicate the school's transition from college to university. The whole logo is round like the earth, symbolizing the school's internationalization and Chinese culture's perfection. Three inner circles over the colleges of hospitality, tourism, and cooking combine the concepts of "Humanity, Professionalism, Entrepreneurship, and Internationalization." Three extending bars below the circles indicate the vigorous growth and development of the school. The middle part of the pattern is like the head of an elephant, an animal with the practical and optimistic spirit of being perfect, honest, diligent, and modest. Laurel leaves, symbolizing wisdom, refinement, and honor. A ribbon that refers to infinity is added to present the school as a high-level hospitality education school rooted in Taiwan but takes a global view to educate excellent hospitality talents dedicated to service and creation. The pattern takes laurel green as the standard color and adopts another lush green full of vitality and glory to exhibit the prospective, outstanding, and creational image of NKUHT. In August 1992, the school's primary office was established, and the Executive Yuan approved Dr. Lee Fu-Deng as the director to arrange relevant matters. Through three years of elaborate planning and diligent work, the National Kaohsiung Hospitality Management Academy, the first hospitality school in Taiwan, was finally founded on July 1, 1995. During the foundation process, the preparatory group visited famous hospitality schools in Europe, the U.S.A., Japan, Mainland China, and Hong Kong to learn about their experiences since there was no precedent in Taiwan. With the ultimate goal of establishing a source for talented hospitality professionals that can meet social demands, the group combined useful experiences with the best Chinese culture to establish the school. As it was the time when technical and vocational colleges were transforming, the academy pooled the wisdom of industrial, governmental and academic circles to take many measures relevant to the era, including Sandwich Courses, Labor Education, overseas internships& visits, etc., which drew high appraisal from various circles. As a result, every year, the academy's entrance examination attracted many young students, even college graduates and masters of graduate institutes, causing a great sensation throughout society. Meanwhile, the campus' view is humanistic based on the concepts of "green throughout the year, blossoming in four seasons and presenting a southern scene with lotus and coconut" and "turning the campus into a sightseeing spot." On the other side, the academy held the Teacher Acknowledgement Ceremony at the start of the semester and the Teacher Appreciation Ceremony at the end of the semester, twice a year, following ancient Chinese etiquette. Furthermore, the academy adopted flexible designs involving no garbage cans, no iron grating for windows, and no enclosing walls. All of these measures won universal praise. In this stage, all of the faculty and students in the academy worked hard to achieve more and more successes, which created high popularity for the academy in Taiwan and overseas after being reported on frequently by the media. Consequently, many domestic and foreign people regularly visited the academy, such as representatives from public and private institutions and relevant industries for vocational training, recruitment, or license exams. Also, officers of different levels and elites of various circles visited the academy to frequently participate in educational instruction. However, as technology and knowledge, as well as the environment of hospitality education, has rapidly changed in recent years, it is believed that the school will face more severe challenges in the future. Therefore, the school set up the "Preparatory Committee for a Name Change" to implement the plan to actively change the college into a university after passing the 2007 Appraisal of Technical Colleges in 2008 and obtaining the qualification for a name change. With the aim of "promoting external competitiveness and inspiring internal organizational energy," the name of the school was finally changed to the "National Kaohsiung University of Hospitality and Tourism" (NKUHT) on August 1, 2000, with the approval of the Ministry of Education and Executive Yuan through hard work, collective wisdom and the efforts of the entire faculty and all of the students. Besides the development direction of "Taking root in Taiwan and expanding internationally," the school has established the development idea of "More tolerant, more independent, more open, more beautiful" while implementing the original concepts of humanism, specialization, enterprise-style, and internationalization for the future. The university not only aims at becoming a source for hospitality service talents, a key partner of hospitality businesses, and a new model of hospitality education but also at constructing the vision of Kurt: "To be the hospitality university most capable of leading creation and development."
      6. NKNU has also won nationwide acclaim for its efforts and scholarly pursuits. In 2006, the University was accredited by the Ministry of Education as an "excellent" institution, ranking it as one of the nation's best universities. With a vision directed to the future, NKNU's faculty and students help build a community based on heritage and innovation, striving to diversify and expand the University's status across the world. With their endeavors, NKNU has become an institution attuned toward globalization, equality, and environmentalism. NKNU is proud of its highly efficient faculty and staff dedicated to the enrichment of the campus. The values of "service," "excellence," "efficiency," "humanity," and "digitalization" are stressed among all levels of administration. Through these values, the University can remain a first-rate academic environment where both research and instruction can thrive. The College of Extended Education of NKNU offers a wide range of programs for in-service teachers and professionals who hope to extend their professional qualifications. Career training courses and personal development courses are also available to the general public through non-degree programs. At NKNU, everyone is welcomed to pursue a life-long education. In addition to promoting academic knowledge and skills, NKNU also emphasizes cultural diversity. Therefore, the University is devoted to remodeling the general education curricula, aiming to encompass various courses to cultivate a whole-person education. With this goal, the University also encourages academic units to organize national and international conferences to strengthen academic and cultural exchanges. Since its establishment, NKNU has educated many significant contributors to the field of education. With 70% of teachers and education administrators in southern Taiwan having connections to the University, NKNU maintains a critical nexus for education-related research and teacher training. It again proves to be the place that inspires national and regional education reforms. In 1989, the University initiated a second campus in Yan-Chao in order to accommodate its new mission. The campus was inaugurated a year later, and, in 2003, the University's two colleges--the College of Technology and the College of Science--moved to Yan-Chao. Since 2004, the University has been recognized for its merit by the Ministry of Education in the national university evaluation and accreditation. From 2005 to 2012, the University has been awarded funding and accredited as an institution pursuing "excellence in teaching."
      7. The National Kaohsiung First University of Science and Technology (First Tech) is a leading higher education institution committed to academic excellence. At present, the University consists of 5 colleges (Engineering, Electrical Engineering and Computer Science, Management, Finance and Banking, and Foreign Languages), 24 graduate institutes (including an IMBA program), 16 departments and one undergraduate honors program, one Post Baccalaureate Bachelor Degree Program, plus three doctoral programs, with 248 faculty and a student population of 7,600. The award of the prestigious Teaching Excellence Project granted by the Ministry of Education for nine consecutive years since 2006 stands testimony to its excellence and commitment to enhancing teaching, learning environment, and a global outlook. We won recognition from the Ministry of Education and gained a four-year (2013~2016) subsidization of the Technological University Paradigm Program. The amount of subsidization in the four years is 240 million NT dollars. Quacquarelli Symonds (QS) recently announced World University Rankings for 2013, and National Kaohsiung First University of Science and Technology (FIRST TECH) was able to be top 300 in the last two years. This year FIRST TECH wins recognition for its outstanding performance and is the only technical and vocational University to be top 300 in southern Taiwan. To catch up with the world, we established a particular office to promote entrepreneurship in August 2010. Based on two main ideas -- "innovation and entrepreneurship education" and "innovation and entrepreneurial development" -- we hope to equip our students with the characteristics of innovation and the core value of entrepreneurship, such as passion, willingness to share, and devote themselves. We have further reached four goals: "the combination of theory, practice, and innovation," "innovation and the development of entrepreneurs," "innovation and the development of the entrepreneurial environment," and "the practice of research and development." By doing so, we hope to transform this University into the first entrepreneurial University in Taiwan, enhancing students' overall competitiveness in the professional field and their entrepreneurial ability shortly. To conduct international cooperation and provide international students assistance, First Tech established the Center for International Affairs and Language Learning in August 2013. To better promote international affairs, First Tech carries out an organizational reshuffle, and the Office of International Affairs (OIA) is officially established in August 2014 to carry out the international exchange, international academic activities, and assistance to international students and visitors. Currently, OIA consists of Academic Exchange Section and Overseas Students Section. By striving to pursue excellence and innovation, First Tech aims to serve as a bridge of international academic exchange, actively strengthens relations with partnership universities, promotes faculty/student international exchange, and improves international visibility and reputation. First Tech also endeavors to promote an international-friendly campus, enhance the internationalization of all colleges, and strengthen communication among different units.

      14. View full university
