St. John’s International School or SJIS is a private-funded International School that is an associate La Salle School in collaboration with the La Salle Brothers in Malaysia. The establishment of SJIS is in keeping with one of the priorities of the Lasallian Family in Malaysia to cater to the needs of young Malaysians, and also to link the school with a Lasallian organization that has an outstanding and reputable long history of delivering excellent education not only in Malaysia but in 82 countries worldwide. The School is located in leafy Grange Road, a short walk from the center of Cambridge and the College, at the heart of which sits the Chapel, home to the internationally renowned College Chapel Choir. Welcome to St John’s Catholic Primary School. We are located in a single-story building, with pleasant grounds and a secure ball cage for the children to use at playtimes. We also have a planting area which the children love to use in which in the past has been used to grow vegetables, fruit as well as flowers. We are also very lucky to be sited backing on to the Stave Hill Eco-Park, an area which we use as an additional resource for class-based activities. There are 7 classes, one for each year group, with a maximum of 30 places in each class. There is also a nursery class with part-time and full-time places. Nursery and Reception classes have their own separate, well-equipped outdoor play space. St John’s is a good school where the children’s behavior has been identified as being ‘outstanding’ by Ofsted (April 2016). Our curriculum too has been judged as ‘outstanding, where the range of trips, visitors, and activities are recognized as enriching the children’s learning experience. To develop in children excitement and curiosity about the world around them and a love of learning. At St. John’s we aim to stimulate children’s curiosity and challenge them to explore learning in-depth, as encouraged by the National Curriculum. As a Green Flag School, we recognize the importance of environmental awareness being part of the curriculum. The teaching of phonics begins in the Nursery and continues throughout Reception and into Years 1 and 2 using two programs – ‘Letters and Sounds’ and ‘Big Cat Phonics’ – which teach the letters in a specific sequence, and in growing complexity, with words taught alongside the sounds. Children may progress quickly through each phase or may need extra support as they move through each of the phases. Reading at St John’s is taught in two ways – individually or in Guided Reading sessions. Our reading scheme includes the Oxford Reading Tree series and children will take home a book appropriate to their reading level. It is expected that parents will read with their child every day. Now Press Play is an educational resource that uses sound, story, and movement, to immerse children in the world of their topic. Through a series of active and stimulating lessons, Now Press Play captures children’s interest and accelerates their learning. It brings the Curriculum to life and is an engaging start to a topic or a wonderful way to deepen learning. The children put on wireless headphones and are plunged into the world of their topic. St. John’s school received its fourth Eco School Green Flag Award in March 2016. The Green Flag itself flies proudly above the school and is a reflection of what we value as a school. We aim to develop in our pupils an awareness of looking after the environment and this begins in the Nursery, where the children have compost bins for their fruit peel. Physical activity and energetic play provide exercise, encourage coordination, and helps children develop physical skills, such as climbing, balancing, and writing/mark-making, etc. Through outdoor play, children have unique opportunities to play co-operatively – sharing resources, turn-taking, negotiating, communicating ideas, and developing friendships and self-esteem. Phonics – Children from Reception to Year 2 are taught according to the Letters and Sounds program. Daily phonics lessons directly follow the phases and teaching programs detailed in Letters and Sounds. Lessons include revision of previous learning, the teaching of new sounds/ tricky words, and application of new skills. It is an active, multi-sensory session and in the early years, Jolly Phonics actions are used to help children remember the sounds. Parents and carers will be notified of a place before the May half-term holiday. Once accepted for our nursery a homeschool transition program will be organized for your child. This is run by the nursery team. Manchester local authority is responsible for admission of all reception places, including children who are already in our nursery. The local authority form must be completed by parents online by the nominated date in the year before your child is due to start reception. A late application could result in your child not getting a place at the school of their choice. Parents who have a nursery place at St John’s do not automatically get a place in reception at that school. Contact should be made with the school office. Details will be taken and the parents/carers will be advised if there are any vacancies in that year group. If there are vacancies an appointment will be made for the parents/carers and child to come to visit our school. The office will advise the parents/carers of documentation that will be needed and admission forms will be completed. Children are then admitted to the school by a mutually agreeable date. In cases where we do not have vacancies, we will refer the family to the local authority. As the choir school to Cardiff Metropolitan Cathedral, St John’s College provides the boy and girl choristers (ages 8-18) for weekly services, two annual concerts at St David’s Hall, and numerous performance opportunities. At St John’s early reading is taught using synthetic phonics as the main approach to reading. Pupils are systematically taught the sounds (phonemes), how to blend the sounds all through the words for reading and how to segment the sounds to spell words. They are taught to use their phonic skills and knowledge as the first approach to reading. Here at St John’s, we follow the Read Write Inc phonic program. All children in Foundation Stage and Key Stage 1 are taught in reading Write Inc groups daily. The program is continued in Key Stage 2 for those children who need it. We have a nursery for pupils aged 3-4 years. Pupils joining the Reception Class remain in the school until 11 years of age.
