- Chartered by Georgia's state in 1785, the University of Georgia is the birthplace of public higher education in America — launching our nation's great tradition of world-class public education. What began as a commitment to inspire the next generation grows stronger today through global research, hands-on learning, and extensive outreach. A top value in public higher education and research, the University of Georgia tackles some of the world's grand challenges, from combating infectious disease and creating a dependable food supply to advancing economic growth and strengthening cyber and global security. As Georgia's flagship institution, the University is recognized for its commitment to student excellence by emphasizing rigorous learning experiences both inside and outside the classroom, including hands-on research and leadership opportunities. These experiences contribute to the University's exceptional rates in retention, graduation, and career placement. Among public universities, the University of Georgia has been one of the nation's top three Rhodes Scholars producers over the past two decades. Its honors program is ranked as one of the top 10 in the country. The University is also home to the Peabody Awards, the most prestigious prize in electronic media. Scholars at the University of Georgia are committed to improving the quality of life for all. They are leaders in pivotal fields, such as vaccine development, regenerative medicine, plant sciences, and more. One of the nation's top universities for technology commercialization and licensing income, the University of Georgia research has resulted in nearly 700 commercial products reaching the marketplace. With its broad reach, the University's 17 colleges and schools enroll more than 37,000 students and have produced over 315,000 alumni living worldwide. The University of Georgia's initiatives extend globally while touching every corner of the state, realizing its land- and sea-grant missions. The University's eight Public Service and Outreach units, which are among the strongest in the nation, help create jobs, develop leaders, and address critical challenges. Research, outreach, and extension serve as significant drivers of economic and workforce development and spark successful partnerships that create new businesses and train tomorrow's workforce. The University's threefold teaching, research, and service mission span the globe with campuses in five Georgia locations, Washington, D.C., England, Costa Rica, Italy, and partnerships in more than 50 countries on six continents. The University of Georgia, a land-grant and sea-grant university with statewide commitments and responsibilities, is the state's oldest, most comprehensive, and most diversified higher education institution. Its motto, "to teach, serve, and inquire into the nature of things," reflects the University's integral and unique role in the conservation and enhancement of the state's and nation's intellectual, cultural, and environmental heritage. As a comprehensive land-grant and sea-grant institution, the University of Georgia offers baccalaureate, master's, doctoral, and professional degrees in the arts, humanities, social sciences, biological sciences, physical sciences, agricultural and environmental sciences, business, ecology, engineering, environmental design, family and consumer sciences, forest resources, journalism and mass communication, education, law, pharmacy, public health, social work, and veterinary medicine. The University is also home to the Augusta University/University of Georgia Medical Partnership. The University attracts students nationally and internationally as well as from within Georgia. It offers the state's broadest array of possibilities in graduate and professional education, and thus a large minority of the student body is post-baccalaureate. The predominantly Georgian undergraduate student body comprises highly qualified students admitted initially as first-year students and selected transfer students principally from other University System institutions. With the original scholarship, basic and applied research, and creative activities constituting an essential core from which to draw, the land-grant and sea-grant mission's impact is reflected throughout the state. Cooperative extension, continuing education, public service, experiment stations, and technology transfer are all designed to enhance the well-being of the citizens of Georgia through their roles in economic, social, and community development. As it has been historically, the University of Georgia is responsive to the evolution of the state's educational, social, and economic needs. It aspires through its strategic planning to even closer contact and interaction with public and private institutions throughout the state and the citizens it serves. This is where everything we do matters, where we can believe, take chances and tackle our highest goals. This is the place where new acquaintances become lifelong friends and spontaneous moments become cherished memories. Everything you need to become amazing is all here. When an act of the General Assembly incorporated the University of Georgia on January 27, 1785, Georgia became the first state to charter a state-supported university. In 1784 the General Assembly had set aside 40,000 acres of land to endow a college or seminary of learning. At the first meeting of the board of trustees, held in Augusta on February 13, 1786, Abraham Baldwin was selected president of the University. A native of Connecticut and a graduate of Yale University, Baldwin — who had come to Georgia in 1784 — drafted the charter adopted by the General Assembly. View full university

When an immediate life-threatening event or weather situation occurs, the Panther Alert system will trigger alerts through various communications channels, including email, text, phone calls, and social media posts. The University also sends text messages about crime incidents that affect the university community, such as armed robberies, shootings, or assaults. The next option is opt-in, and we encourage all community members to sign up for alerts. This year of college work was the beginning of higher education in Augusta. In 1996 Augusta College acquired university status as Augusta State University. In 2011 MCG became Georgia Health Sciences University to reflect its broad mission in many health sciences. Both schools had expanded programs to meet the educational needs of the rapidly changing society of the late 20th/early 21st century. Georgia Southern boasts 27,000-plus students, more than 2,000 faculty and staff, and 141 programs of study at the bachelor's, masters, and doctoral levels in its second century of service. Founded as a school for teaching modern agricultural production techniques and homemaking skills to rural schoolchildren, then-First District A&M School began within two decades to shift its emphasis to meet the growing need for teachers within the state. Its name and mission were changed in 1924 to Georgia Normal School as a training ground for educators, though it continued to accept "preparatory" or high school students. The School’s creation signaled the beginning of the transformation of the agrarian South to an industrial economy.During its first 50 years, Tech grew from a narrowly focused trade school to a regionally recognized technological university. In 1948, the School’s name was changed to the Georgia Institute of Technology to reflect a growing focus on advanced technological and scientific research.Women students were admitted in 1952, and in 1961 Georgia Tech became the first university in the Deep South to admit African-American students without a court order. In recent years, Georgia Tech has been a national leader in managing the global transition from an industrial economy to an information economy.Throughout its long history, Georgia Tech has always focused its efforts on preparing students to use their innovative skills and strong work ethic to solve real-world problems and improve the lives of people around the globe. From the world-famous “Ramblin’ Wreck” fight song to the fun and festivities of RATS Week, the Tech campus is steeped in time-honored traditions that students embrace from generation to generation. The words and music for Tech’s world-famous “Ramblin’ Wreck” fight song were inspired by an old folk ballad, “The Sons of the Gamboliers.” The name Ramblin’ Wreck gained widespread acceptance in the 1920s, when Tech graduates began building makeshift mechanical buggies to improve a poor transportation system in South America. The 1930 Model A Ford was donated to Georgia Tech in 1961 by Capt. Ted Johnson, a then-retired pilot who had purchased and restored the car for his son. The official Ramblin’ Wreck appears on the field at all home football games and other events as a symbol of Georgia Tech. A second Model A was purchased and restored by the Alumni Association in the 1980s, and is used at alumni events. A third automobile was purchased and restored by the Georgia Tech Foundation, and is parked in the lobby of the Georgia Tech Hotel. RATS (Recently Acquired Tech Students) Week is Tech’s orientation week for new students, when first-year students learn all about Tech campus traditions.Believed to have come to Tech in 1896, the steam whistle was meant to mimic the industrial whistles of the times. It called the students to their shop classes. Today, it is operated by a computerized atomic clock that releases the steam. The Whistle blows five minutes to the hour to end classes on Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays. It has a different schedule on Tuesdays and Thursdays. It also blows after Tech touchdowns during home games. View full university

- From its founding as a women's educational center in 1889, our institution has consistently been a destination for students looking to make a difference in the world. We are Georgia's designated public liberal arts university. More importantly, we teach every student how to learn, and we strive to instill a lifelong passion for learning that serves our students well regardless of the career paths they choose. The main Georgia College campus is located in Milledgeville, a charming, traditional southern town less than a two-hour drive from Atlanta. There is an additional campus location at Robins Air Force Base. Georgia College will be a nationally preeminent public liberal arts university. Georgia College is the state's only designated public liberal arts university. Classes are small at Georgia College. Better yet, 100 percent of them are taught by men and women who love teaching. Some 80 percent have Ph.D.s from top universities. You can choose from more than 40 majors from the liberal arts to business, from health sciences to education to pre-professional programs. We combine classroom knowledge with real-world experience. So, learning doesn't stop after class. It has just begun at that point. Service-learning, study abroad, internships, undergraduate research, and leadership organizations are some of the ways we bring together knowledge and life. With four specific colleges, each student will find the resources and support to reach their academic goals at Georgia College. The essence of a liberal arts education is honed in studying arts and sciences at Georgia's only public liberal arts university. A Georgia College degree in business will give you a leg up when competing for those right one-of-a-kind job opportunities. With a degree in education, we'll teach you to teach future generations to change the world. A rapidly-growing market segment, there will always be plenty of opportunities for you to make a difference with a Georgia College degree in Health and Sciences. A simplistic explanation is – a liberal arts education is "general, overall education." But it is much broader and more profound than that. Far beyond merely memorizing facts and philosophies, a liberal arts curriculum teaches you how to assess the world around you critically. There is no more valuable skill than to gather facts and opinions, process them, and make your own educated decisions. It is a skill that gives you an advantage at any job, enhances your relationships, and leaves you personally fulfilled throughout your lifetime. The GC Journeys Program will transform your way of thinking and experiencing college. By participating in five inside and outside the classroom transformative experiences during your time at Georgia College, you will step outside of your usual surroundings, gain authentic experiences, solve problems, become a leader, participate in real-world settings, and put ideas into action. Georgia College welcomes international students and the diverse backgrounds they bring to our campus and encourages all students to study abroad. The International Education Center works with students, faculty, and staff across campus to promote international and cross-cultural learning, as well as respect for diversity – one of the four cornerstones of the Georgia College educational experience - and assists the University in producing graduates who are prepared to accept their responsibilities as citizens of the world. We assist international students through the admissions process and provide information and counseling to the more than 100 enrolled international students from 50 countries on non-immigrant student visa regulations and processes, medical insurance, housing, financial and work issues, and adjustment to life in the U.S. and academic concerns. The student-centered International Education Center advises the International Club. Their members include many U.S. students and students worldwide and assist with its programs such as the International Dinner and International Week. Also, it organizes and provides support for community and campus activities, such as the Connections community friendship program, the International Student Orientation, and Casa Mondo, the cross-cultural living experience. The International Center works with faculty and our partner universities to provide our students with summer, semester, and academic year study abroad programs in over 20 different countries. Safety considerations are a vital component of each education abroad program. Georgia College adheres to the professional standards of safety and risk management in education abroad. Georgia College is a member of the Forum for Education Abroad, which sets the national standard of acceptable practices. The International Education Center implements the Forum's Standard 8 on safety abroad and risk assessment. Also, the International Education Center monitors world events through a variety of government-based resources, including the Overseas Security and Advisory Council (OSAC), the U.S. Department of State, the Center for Disease Control (CDC), and other foreign-based resources, including but not limited to: the British Foreign Service and Commonwealth Office and the Canadian Foreign Travel Advice websites. Georgia College also works closely with its foreign university partners and study abroad affiliates for 'on-the-ground' understanding of local events or concerns related to the Worldwide Travel Caution. All Georgia College organized programs require students, faculty, and staff to enroll in the Smart Traveler Enrollment Program (STEP), a free service to allow U.S. citizens and nationals traveling abroad to enroll their trip the nearest U.S. Embassy or Consulate. Additionally, all study abroad, students, faculty, and staff are enrolled in mandatory comprehensive medical, evacuation, and repatriation insurance plans. As a comprehensive land-grant and sea-grant institution, the University of Georgia offers baccalaureate, master's, doctoral, and professional degrees in the arts, humanities, social sciences, biological sciences, physical sciences, agricultural and environmental sciences, business, ecology, engineering, environmental design, family and consumer sciences, forest resources, journalism and mass communication, education, law, pharmacy, public health, social work, and veterinary medicine.

We further believe the fullest information about God comes from the person of Jesus Christ and the relation of His redemptive works as recorded in the Holy Bible through the Holy Spirit's inspiration. All creation derives value and significance from God revealed in Jesus Christ. Christians can live as redeemed, regenerated, and cleansed members of society through the indwelling of the Holy Spirit. We further believe a college experience in a Christian environment will enable students to develop lifelong spiritual and social values. Moreover, you will have access to every possible opportunity, enabling you to grow in ways you never thought possible. Emmanuel College first opened on January 1, 1919, under the name of Franklin Springs Institute. The school's founder was the Reverend George Floyd Taylor, a North Carolinian who had long desired to begin such an institution. For over a century, the campus had been used as a health resort centered around several mineral springs. G. F. Taylor was president from 1919-1926 and again from 1929-1931. During 1926-1929, two men served briefly as president, first, Reverend A. M. Taylor and then Reverend B. A. Jones. Because of the Great Depression, the school closed temporarily in 1931. At the foundation of the many changes and progress over the years remains the paramount emphasis on Christ-centered values. The lives of EC alumni speak of the quality of the academic opportunities they have received. Through its Christian higher education program, Emmanuel College has provided students with educational and spiritual values that will enrich their lives and lead them to enrich the lives of others. The role of the Office of Institutional Effectiveness at South Georgia State College is to demonstrate how well the College succeeds in accomplishing its mission and meeting its goals. Faculty and administrators develop mission statements for each academic program and administrative unit derived from the College's mission statement. They define the program and learning outcomes they believe are most appropriate and report them by the Institutional Effectiveness Cycle at SGSC. These outcomes are assessed to determine the extent to which they were achieved in the planning year. Finally, the assessment results are used to make changes for continuous improvements in the academic and administrative programs. View full university

They will serve the campus community through leadership positions, active involvement in on-campus activities, a strong dedication to academics, and engaging in philanthropic and community service endeavors that help maintain a strong country and community. Middle Georgia State University has a history, unlike most other higher education institutions in the United States. Not only is it Georgia's newest University -- as of July 2015 – it is also one of Georgia's oldest institutions. Its origins go back to the late 19th century, and its name has been changed several times. Middle Georgia College continued to move forward, building athletic programs and new facilities. The college's baseball team won four national junior college championships. The college opened a campus in Dublin. Large student dormitories were constructed on the Cochran campus, and in 2007, the Georgia Aviation Technical College in Eastman was merged with Middle Georgia, giving the college three campuses. In 2014, Dr. Christopher Blake became MGA's first permanent president. In 2015, the Board of Regents approved the college's proposal to offer master's degrees, and the name of the institution was changed to Middle Georgia State University. In 2015, a new mission statement was created due to the institution's strategic planning process. That statement is: Middle Georgia State University educates and graduates inspired, lifelong learners whose scholarship and careers enhance the region through professional leadership, innovative partnerships, and community engagement.

Georgia Southwestern State University, a four-year unit of the University System of Georgia, was founded in 1906 as the Third Agricultural and Mechanical School. In 1926, the General Assembly granted a charter authorizing the school to offer two years of college work and change its name to the Third District Agricultural and Normal College. The new charter resulted in the curriculum's expansion to include courses in teacher training, and the State Department of Education gave teacher certification to students who completed the program. In 1932, by legislative enactment, this College and other state-supported institutions of higher learning in Georgia were organized into the University System of Georgia and placed under the Board of Regents' jurisdiction. As a University System unit, the College continued its two-year curriculum and changed its name to Georgia Southwestern College. In 1964, the Board of Regents of the University System of Georgia authorized Georgia Southwestern College to begin its transition to a four-year degree-granting institution. This action resulted in the development of baccalaureate programs, and the first bachelor's degrees were conferred in June 1968. The name of the institution was changed to Georgia Southwestern State University in July of 1996. A graduate study program leading to the Master of Education degree was approved by the Board of Regents and initiated in June 1973. This program has undergone continuous growth and development, and the Specialist in Education degree was begun in the summer of 1982. The Master of Science in Administration was added in the winter of 1983. The Master of Science in Computer Science was added in 1986, and the Master of Business Administration was added to the curriculum in 2003. Most recently, the Master of Arts in English was added in the fall of 2011, and the Master Science in Nursing (online) was added in the fall of 2012. Among distinguished GSW alumni are former President of the United States and Nobel Peace Prize recipient Jimmy Carter, former first lady Rosalynn Carter, and the late Griffin Bell, former U.S. Attorney General.

Augustans, too, caught this fire and chartered the state's first academy in 1783. In 1791 when President George Washington attended the examinations at the Academy of Richmond County, the school offered post-secondary studies in Latin, French, Greek, algebra, and trigonometry to prepare students for transfer to university sophomores. Five years later, in 1929, full-fledged senior college status was granted as South Georgia Teachers College. Two universities became one. On December 1, 2015, that one became Augusta University.
