- The John Fisher School is a growing voluntary aided, all-ability, Catholic school for students. Students are supported by staff to aspire for 'Academic, Sporting and Cultural excellence' through their studies and co-curricular opportunities. The John Fisher School was rated as 'Outstanding' behavior & 'Outstanding' Sixth Form (Ofsted, October 2013) with A-level results judged 'Outstanding' (ALPs - August 2016). The school is a community of learning and worship, with love and support central to all our activities and experiences. We believe as well that all aspects of the life of the School should be lived in a spirit of justice and charity and that Christian selflessness should be part of all our dealings with one another. This was highlighted in our 'Outstanding' Section 48 Inspection report (for Schools with a religious character). We desire that students leave us as mature, independent learners who are ready to take responsibility for their progress beyond school and can make valuable contributions to the wider community for years to come. Students, supported by their parents/carers, are encouraged to take advantage of the wonderful opportunities for personal development outside the traditional classroom environment. In Sport, opportunities exist across the full range of sports for students to participate at the very highest levels. We currently have student international representation in Rugby, Cross Country, and Athletics. In Rugby, The John Fisher School has been recognized as one of the foremost state schools in the UK and has enjoyed considerable success in this game at the highest level (Runners Up in National Rugby Sevens 2015). In Cross Country, we are rated as the highest-ranked state school nationally, competing with the best independent schools such as Eton College, Radley College, and Abingdon. The school also has an excellent reputation in cricket and athletics (Sutton LA Athletics champions 2015 & 2016). We believe that the school is one part of a community, and as such, share our expertise and facilities with local schools and the community to promote participation in sport at all levels. In Music, the award-winning Chapel Choir offers students an unrivaled opportunity to participate at the very highest level in national and international festivals and competitions. In addition to sports and music, students participate in activities such as drama, debating, chess, and various House Competitions. The School is forward-thinking and forward-looking, taking advantage of the very latest technologies to enhance learning and teaching across the curriculum. Having appointed specialist teachers in Computing, Literacy, and Inclusion, the school values helping students develop a range of skills. Working in partnership with parents/carers and Governors, our highly skilled and caring staff is dedicated to ensuring each student achieves his full potential regardless of ability or aptitude through excellent and varied learning experiences. As part of the broader curriculum experience, students have access to a full range of trips and visits. Each year all students have an opportunity to participate in our varied Retreat program organized by our School Chaplain. Recent trips abroad include Choir Olympics in Austria, Rugby tours to South Africa, History visits to Berlin as well as the First World War Battlefields, Ski trips to the USA, France, and Italy, and much more. Closer to home all subject departments take advantage of the opportunity to visit museums, galleries, and theatres in and around London. Students in all year groups are proud of the rich traditions of The John Fisher School and are encouraged to wear their uniforms with pride. The first twenty students who joined the school in 1929 may not recognize much of today’s modern teaching terminology and technology. However, what they would recognize in John Fisher students today are the timeless values of courteousness, honesty, and consideration for others. We pride ourselves on offering an excellent educational experience for all our students. Whilst our team of staff is cherished, we fully appreciate that our students will always be our priority, instilling aspiration and meeting their needs comes first. The John Fisher School is well known for its academic success, cultural and sporting excellence combined with phenomenal pastoral care, guidance, and support. The John Fisher School opened in 1929 and whilst we embrace its past we continue to redefine our horizons. We continuously aim to be a great school because we understand that great schools change lives. We are a values-led institution. Our Christian and shared values underpin an inclusive ethos where faith is taken seriously. There is a culture of high standards for everyone who learns and works in our school. We are not interested in low expectations, fixed mindsets, or making excuses. We are interested in unlocking the God-given potential of every individual within a caring and supportive learning environment. John Fisher is often described as "more than a school" but rather a hub in the community. It is the strength of the relationships and the goodness of the people in our community that makes us stand out. Our students fully understand the importance of representing The John Fisher School with pride and distinction. View full school
- St John Fisher is a bright, busy, welcoming school where there is always lots going on. We benefit from a highly committed staff who work well together to ensure every child reaches their potential whatever their aptitude or ability. We aim to provide the best possible education for our children and value academic, creative, sporting, social and personal development equally highly. We believe that children learn best when they experience enjoyable, relevant activities and where they are encouraged, supported, and appropriately challenged. We aim to enable our children to become enthusiastic, independent, life-long learners by helping them to develop positive attitudes to learning and the skills and knowledge they need to succeed. We enjoy a high level of parental support and interest, we firmly believe in the benefits of home, school, and parish working together to develop the talents of our children. As a Catholic school, the spiritual development of our children is based on the Church's teachings and the Christian principles of love, respect, selflessness, and forgiveness. If you are looking for a school place for your child, please feel free to come along for our school tour where you will be able to meet our staff and pupils. Children are welcome to attend, no need to book. We look forward to meeting you. St John Fisher is a voluntary-aided school, which provides a Catholic education for girls and boys from three to eleven years of age. Most children attend the Nursery as part-time pupils before joining a Reception class in the main school, in the year of their fifth birthday. The school exists primarily to serve the Catholic community in particular, the children of Catholic families who live or worship in the parish of St John Fisher and surrounding parishes. However, the Governing Body welcomes applications, subject to the availability of places, from those of other denominations and faiths who support the religious ethos of the school. The school is the St John Fisher Parish School. Priests, Catechists, and staff work together to create links between school and parish, both spiritual and social. The priests visit the school regularly, celebrate Mass, and lead liturgical services for the children. The Deacon and parish sister are also regular visitors. Preparation for the Sacraments of Reconciliation and First Communion is undertaken with Y3 children chiefly in their parishes with the support of class teaching in school. Children are admitted to Nursery Class in September following their third birthday and following the Admissions Policy. The Nursery has places for up to 52 children, 26 in the morning and 26 in the afternoon. Applicants must complete the school supplementary form available from the school. Children are admitted to the Reception Class in the September following their fourth birthday and by the school’s Admissions Policy a copy of which can be obtained from the school website. All applicants will need to complete a ‘Supplementary Form’ which, in the case of practicing Catholics, will need to be signed by their Parish Priest. This form must be returned to the school. Applicants must also complete a Merton Council application form which is available online and should be returned to the council. If vacancies arise, children will be admitted during the school year. Anyone requiring more information, including information regarding waiting lists, should contact the school office. The National Curriculum lies at the heart of what is taught at St John Fisher School. It sets out a clear, full, and statutory entitlement to learning for all children aged five to eleven and determines the content of what will be taught. It is preceded by the Early Years Foundation Stage Curriculum which is taught to children aged three to five. The school, in partnership with parents and with the parish of St John Fisher, offers to each one of its children a Catholic education centered on Christ, which enables them to develop their talents by Christian values and principles and which throughout all aspects of school life presents Christ’s ministry of love and reconciliation. At St.John Fisher we are committed to the success of every child. This is achieved through a strong partnership between home and school. When a child joins the school we expect their parents and carers as well as the child to sign our Home-School Agreement. This sets out the expectations of school, parents/carers, and each child so that by working together each individual can strive to achieve their very best at all times. We welcome help from parents and grandparents with many school activities. We are very grateful to all the volunteers who support us in this way, and we are very aware of how much the children benefit from this extra contact with interested adults. Our volunteers are usually asked to work alongside pupils in the school library, playing simple language and maths games with some of our younger pupils or lend a hand supporting the older pupils in a wide range of activities. We appreciate that time is a highly valuable commodity to us all but would be delighted to welcome anyone who has even just an hour (or maybe more!), that feels they could commit to regularly. Under English law, governing bodies of Catholic schools have a corporate responsibility to ensure that their schools are managed following the Diocesan Trust Deed or the Trust Deed of the relevant religious institution, and the school’s Instrument of Government or Memorandum of Understanding, Articles of Association and Supplemental Agreements for academies, as well as complying with all other legal requirements. - Our Mission here at SS John Fisher and Thomas More is to value the uniqueness of every person in our Catholic Christian Community. Realizing that each individual is created in God’s likeness. We acknowledge our parents/carers as the first educators and appreciate their support and involvement in school life. Daily, we seek to provide opportunities and rich learning experiences to further the development of the whole child. We celebrate the children’s achievements, strive to realize their hopes, encourage them to reach their goals and dream of whom they may become. Ss John Fisher & Thomas More Catholic Primary School is part of The Wythenshawe Catholic Academy Trust (WCAT). The executive board for the trust delegates most of its responsibilities to the Local Governing Body of the school. It is the responsibility of the Headteacher to implement the school anti-bullying strategy and to ensure that ALL staff are aware of the school policy and know how to deal with incidents of bullying. The Headteacher reports to the Governing Body about the effectiveness of the antibullying policy at every Governors Meeting. The Headteacher ensures that all children know that bullying is wrong and that it is unacceptable behavior in school. Sanctions will be administered to all bullies as outlined in SS John Fisher and Thomas More‟s Behaviour & Discipline Policy. As we state in „The Aims of the School‟ we aim to create a happy and caring environment where children can feel safe, secure and be monitored to work hard to achieve their full potential. Our children are encouraged to set high standards for themselves both in work and play and in their developing relationships with staff and each other. Mutual respect and support are vital in creating a growing and active community which truly reflects our Catholic ethos. It is through this Catholic atmosphere that we will encourage the overall development of each child and pray that they will all learn through examples set, to respect and trust every other person with love, kindness, and dignity. The DfE have recently reinforced the need “to create and enforce a clear and rigorous expectation on all schools to promote the fundamental British values of democracy, the rule of law, individual liberty and mutual respect and tolerance of those with different faiths and beliefs.” As a Catholic School, we actively promote values, virtues, and ethics that shape our pupils' character and moral perspective, through the teachings of the Church. We are confident that our continued focus on the Gospel Values will give our pupils the necessary awareness of what it means to be a good citizen in Britain today, and embed in them the building blocks of a future successful and productive life. Democracy is a key to our organization within school. Pupils have the opportunity to have their voices heard through our School Council, pupil questionnaires, and circle time, and “the talk team”. The elections of the positions of head boy, head girl, deputy head boy, deputy head girl, and the school House Captains, as well as the pupil parliament, take place each year. Candidates are asked to write and then give a speech as to why they wish to be considered for specific positions. Children and staff then vote for their preferred candidate. These post-holders ensure that the voice of the pupils is heard and listened to throughout the year. Children who hold these positions are actively involved in leading assemblies each week. The importance of Laws, whether they be those that govern the class, the school, or the country, are consistently reinforced throughout regular school days, as well as when dealing with behavior and through school assemblies. Pupils are taught the value and reasons behind laws, that they govern and protect us, the responsibilities that this involves, and the consequences when laws are broken. E-safety is an integral part of children’s education in today’s digital world and is embedded in their learning at school. We also want to help our parents and children improve their understanding of e-safety issues so they can learn to use the internet and all digital media safely and securely. As a parent you’ll know how important the internet is to children – they use it to learn, play, socialize and express themselves. It’s a highly creative place of amazing opportunities. But the technology children use every day can seem a bit daunting and you might worry about the risks your child can face online – such as bullying, contact from strangers, or the possibility of them seeing illegal or inappropriate content. All governing bodies of maintained schools and maintained nursery schools and the proprietors of academy schools have a legal duty to publish information on their website about the implementation of the governing body‟s or the proprietor's policy for pupils with SEND. - At Fisher College, we believe that college is more than just an education—it's a life-changing experience. For more than a century, Fisher has been changing lives by providing opportunities to students focused on the three most important aspects of a college experience: education, dedication, and life. Fisher is a four-year college located in Boston's historic Back Bay with locations in Brockton, New Bedford, and North Attleboro. The College provides affordable, real-world educations that prepare students to achieve their career goals and compete in today's challenging economy. Additionally, Fisher College is dedicated to the education of our military service members. Fisher College first opened its doors in 1903 in the predominantly working-class city of Somerville, Massachusetts, just two miles north of Boston. The school traces its roots to educational entrepreneurs Myron and Edmund Fisher, who believed the immigrants of that city in the early 1900s should have an opportunity to advance beyond unskilled labor jobs. In 1952, the Board of Regents of Higher Education of the Commonwealth of Massachusetts approved Fisher as a two-year college, and five years later it was given degree-granting powers. In 1970, Fisher gained accreditation from the New England Association of Schools and Colleges and operates as an independent, non-profit educational institution, currently boasting a diverse population of students from all parts of America and many foreign countries. Fisher College improves lives by providing students with the knowledge and skills necessary for a lifetime of intellectual and professional pursuits. Fisher embraces student centered education that creates an independent graduate, who thinks critically and is prepared for the workplace. Fisher provides a unique learning environment, enhanced by experiential learning, through attentive, experienced and well-credentialed faculty. The Fisher experience motivates students to take ownership of their learning by preparing them to overcome challenges and pursue opportunities. Fisher celebrates an inclusive campus culture that values learning and diversity, bringing cultures and perspectives together in a dynamic arena. Fisher commits its entire community to supporting students and promoting intellectual curiosity and lifelong learning, through hands-on experiences in the workplace, and through a vibrant co-curricular experience. Fisher expects that its students adhere to the highest moral and ethical principles, and demonstrates the value of public service through research-based and service learning opportunities. - As an independent institution in the Catholic tradition of American higher education, St. John Fisher College emphasizes the liberal arts, offering programs in traditional academic disciplines and more directly career-oriented fields. The College is composed of five schools: the School of Arts and Sciences, the School of Business, the Ralph C. Wilson, Jr. School of Education, the Wegmans School of Nursing, and the Wegmans School Pharmacy. Each school is accredited by regional, national, and international accrediting bodies. Learn more about accreditation. Fisher offers undergraduate majors in the humanities, social sciences, natural sciences, business, education, nursing, and several pre-professional programs. The College also offers various master's and doctoral programs, a fully online program, and several online courses that are part of the curriculum mix. St. John Fisher College prepares you to meet the challenges of an increasingly complex world. The liberal nature of a Fisher education means you'll acquire valuable communication, analytic, and problem-solving skills in addition to thorough comprehension within your chosen course of study. In general, class sizes are small so that you will not get lost in the crowd. You'll get personal attention from Fisher's faculty, who are selected for their teaching excellence, scholarly initiatives, and commitment to students. Fisher is a community where all are welcome, regardless of religious or cultural background. If you are a motivated, passionate student willing to invest time and effort in yourself, your education, and your future, you will thrive here. Three themes are central to the mission and vision of St. John Fisher College - our Basilian heritage, our liberal arts tradition, and our students. As the College continues to experience growth in enrollment, expanded academic and athletic program offerings, and physical plant renewal, we seek to live our values and mission each day. By the end of the decade, we will be a widely recognized college in the Northeast Region that enriches student character and deepens intellectual inquiry to prepare men and women for success in a complex and diverse global community. St. John Fisher College is a collaborative community dedicated to teaching, learning, and scholarship in a student-centered educational environment. The College is guided by its liberal arts tradition and its Catholic heritage, as expressed in its founders' motto, the Basilian Fathers: "teach me goodness, discipline, and knowledge." Fisher engages individuals in the lives of intellectual inquiry, professional integrity, and civic responsibility, where diversity and service to others are valued and practiced. Our chief academic goals are to help students develop intellectual skills, a foundation in the liberal arts, and proficiency in a major. We especially emphasize the liberal arts, not only because they are intrinsically valuable but also because they prepare students for life-long learning and an ever-changing work environment. Intellectual growth begins with careful attention to necessary verbal and quantifiable skills. Through thorough preparation in these two areas, students equip themselves for the critical thinking and effective communication necessary for success in any discipline. They learn to analyze, coordinate, and synthesize information, and they increase their capacity for understanding, especially in the liberal arts, which are the core of the undergraduate experience. Solidify your chosen career path or expand your intellectual horizons by choosing from among Fisher's full complement of academic programs. Special and pre-professional programs also are offered. The significant commitment of the faculty of St. John Fisher College is excellence in teaching, with an emphasis on close interaction with students. The personal attention faculty give to students is a hallmark of the Basilian educational tradition and is a significant part of their teaching commitment. This attention manifests itself as support both for students struggling to meet the challenge of academic success and those undertaking individual study beyond their peers' level. To be useful in the classroom and to serve as models of academic excellence, faculty must also remain actively engaged in scholarship. When faculty share the results of their scholarship, either informally, at conferences, or in print, they demonstrate their intellectual vitality and benefit from interaction with a community of scholars. Scholarship that takes the form of published, original research is incredibly valuable. It contributes to effective teaching, brings honor to the institution, and adds to the store of human knowledge. Our academic priorities and our emphasis on values naturally affect how we deal with one another and with our students. Because we believe that intellectual growth and personal growth go hand in hand, we seek to create an environment where students, faculty, and staff can reach their full human potential. We seek to overcome prejudice, including gender, race, age, religion, region, culture, disability, or economic status. We see human diversity as positive, and we work together to set an example of tolerance and openness. By encouraging tolerance and appreciation of diversity, we help our students become useful citizens of a multi-cultural world. As a liberal arts institution, St. John Fisher College fosters the growth of individuals who are free from ignorance, bigotry, and fear of the unfamiliar individuals who are therefore free for that independence, which is the fruit of knowledge and love.
