In addition to the Olympic Standard Sports Complex, there are 5 rugby pitches, 9 tarmac tennis courts, 9 Astro tennis courts, 4 purpose-built netball courts, a floodlit artificial turf hockey pitch, and 3 grass pitches, cricket pitches, and a 300m athletics track, 2 squash courts, and a covered, heated swimming pool. The Memorial Chapel of St Michael and George sits firmly in the middle of the site and follows the Anglican Communion. Wellington is a two-form entry community primary day school for girls and boys aged 3+ to 11+. All 15 classes are of mixed ability. Nursery and Reception comprise The Foundation Stage, Years 1 and 2 make up Key Stage 1 and the Infant School, Years 3 to 6 make up Key Stage 2 and the Junior School. All teachers are fully qualified. Welford Primary School was opened in January 1972. It was designed as a two-form entry primary school catering for children aged 4 to 11 years old. In 1978 a Nursery Unit was added and 3 years later a Community Unit was built. More land was later acquired for both recreational and educational purposes. The school also completed an extension to the building in 2002 and 2012. This new extension provided additional office accommodation, teaching rooms, staff room, and a dedicated computer suite to accommodate 30 children. The school is a modern building set in the heart of the community of Handsworth. Its buildings are well-maintained as are the grounds. Together they present an excellent environment for young children to learn in and live together. Welford School has up to 420 children on the roll aged between 4 and 11 with an average class size of 30. In addition 60 full-time equivalent places for children aged between 3 and 4 in our Nursery. The school has a wide range of facilities and resources to support children’s education. These include well-equipped classrooms (all with interactive whiteboards), an Assembly Hall, and a PE Hall. The Cornerstones Curriculum is a creative and thematic approach to learning that is mapped to the new 2014 Primary National Curriculum to ensure comprehensive coverage of national expectations. Our new curriculum will be delivered through Imaginative Learning Projects (ILPs) which will provide a rich menu of exciting and motivating learning activities that make creative links between all aspects of our children’s learning. We believe children learn better when they are encouraged to use their imagination and apply their learning to engaging contexts. Our new curriculum will provide lots of learning challenges throughout the academic year that will require children to solve problems, apply themselves creatively, and express their knowledge and understanding effectively across the curriculum. We work in partnership with parents/carers and the wider community to ensure the success of our children. We believe that children deserve the best possible chances in life and that they learn best when there are strong links between home and school. We are a friendly, caring school with high expectations for all our pupils. Our children are encouraged to explore, discover and question through a range of exciting learning opportunities both within and outside the classroom. We aim to offer a broad, balanced and enriched curriculum to support children’s learning and to promote excellence. English is taught through the use of the Primary Literacy Framework in conjunction with the ‘Power of Reading’ project from the CLPE and we use a scheme of work for their planning that incorporates speaking and listening, reading, and writing across the different genres. In addition to this Big, Writing is taught weekly from Year 2 –Year 6 providing opportunities for extended writing. For phonics, we use the Letters and Sounds Phonics Programme in Reception and KS1. We also use Accelerated Reader in KS2 and Year 2 when they are ready. This enhances our reading program and challenges the children to be independent learners. Maths is taught using the Primary Numeracy Strategy and the school's Calculation Policy to provide consistency in our teaching and to ensure progression in the development of mathematical skills. We follow the Early Years Foundation Stage curriculum for children aged 3 to 5 years of age. As a school, we also use the International Primary Curriculum (IPC) to enhance our curriculum. IPC is effective in enabling pupils to apply skills and knowledge acquired in English, Maths, Science, and other curriculum areas purposefully and concretely. Our most recent Ofsted inspection graded us as good and noted several outstanding features. This was the third 'good' judgment in a row for the school. In 2011 the 'quality of pupils’ learning and their progress’ was graded ‘outstanding’ along with six other features. These are exciting times for Webster (but when was it ever different?). We have been in a process of expansion from a one-form entry school over the last few years. We are currently designated as a three-form entry school. As of September 2017, we are three-form entry in Reception and Key Stage 1 and Year 3 and two-form in Years 4-6. On April 1st, 2013 Webster converted to Academy status after a long period of consideration and consultation. We are not connected to any Trust or Federation but are self-governed. We are part of a group of seven schools in Moss Side, Hulme, and Whalley Range called The Heart Of Manchester Partnership who work collaboratively on school improvement. We may very well be biased, but Webster children are the funniest, keenest to learn, kindest and loveliest bunch we know. They are simply the best to work with. The teachers and teaching assistants are also talented, dedicated, passionate, and highly trained. We’re lucky to have them. We pay rigorous attention to the core skills of English and Mathematics. Most other subjects are taught through the cross-curricular themes which have evolved and developed over the last 5 years. As an academy, we have the opportunity to shape the curriculum that is right for our school community. We promote a unique entitlement to learning across The Arts, built on a special relationship with Manchester Camerata, one of Europe’s leading Chamber Orchestras, and the work of visiting instrumental tutors and Artists in Education. We promote a great range of trips and enrichment activities to add further depth and color to our curriculum, including strong links with local cultural organizations and schools. Webster Primary School is growing from a one to a three-form entry community school for children aged five to eleven years old and has nursery places for three and four-year-olds. The school is housed in a large single-story building with newly surfaced playgrounds on three sides and extensive gardens and fields to the side and rear of the school. Nursery, Reception, and Key Stage 1 classes are on the Lloyd Street side of the building (originally Webster Infant School) while Key Stage 2 is in the other half of the building which backs onto the field facing Moss Side Brewery (originally Webster Junior School). The building is a 1973 construction that was completely refurbished through 2012 and 2013. All visitors must report to the main office. There is a separate entrance for Nursery pupils, which can be located by following the footpath on the left-hand side of the main entrance. The main daily entrance for pupils is at the back of school off the main playground, pupils from Years 1-6 line up in the playground to be collected by staff at the beginning of the school day. Reception pupils should use their classroom doors for entry to and collection from school. The school has a current capacity for 592 children between the ages of three and eleven, which includes a 52-place nursery. In 2017-2018 we are 3 forms of entry in Reception, KS1 and Year 3, and two forms from Year 4 to Year 6. Webster is a founder member of the Heart Of Manchester partnership of 7 schools in Moss Side, Hulme, and Whalley Range who support each other to improve teaching, learning, and educational outcomes for the children in our community. On our staff training day at the National Holocaust Centre, we thought about what qualities we want our children to have when they leave Webster and what we as a whole staff can do to ensure this happens. We are a new Primary School, which was formed from the amalgamation of two separate Infant and Junior Schools in April 2015.
