Whitchurch High (Foundation) School is a popular co-educational maintained comprehensive school with almost 2,300 pupils on the roll. Our intake is drawn from our seven partner primary schools based in northern Cardiff. These are Birchgrove, Coryton, Gabalfa, Hawthorn, Llanishen Fach, Rhiwbina, and Whitchurch Primary. The school is based on two sites in the suburb of Whitchurch. Years 7, 8, and 9 are based on the lower school site off Manor Way, with Years 10, 11, 12, and 13 students on the upper school site in the Village. As a Foundation status school, granted in September 2011, the governors assume and discharge three enhanced responsibilities with the land and buildings secured in trust, being the direct employers of all staff and are the designated admissions authority for all students. The school receives the same level of formula funding as locally maintained secondary community schools. As the Admissions Authority the governors directly manage all mainstream admissions, so parents and carers must directly apply to Whitchurch High School to secure a child's place. The Choir School is all but unique in that it is entirely dedicated to looking after the thirty or so boys who sing in Westminster Abbey as choristers. We offer a highly subsidized, first-class, all-around education within what is a secure, happy, and supportive environment. We aim to provide the best possible experience specifically for choristers, which prepares them for the next stage of their schooling, and indeed for adult life, whatever path they later choose to follow. With just 30 boys in the school, year groups are very small with normally between only five to seven boys in each. These small groups are taught by subject specialist staff, with excellent facilities, in dedicated curriculum areas. While the teachers are passionate about their subjects, they appreciate entirely the demands made on choristers and we can tailor the school day around the needs of the individual boys. Perhaps even more important is the pastoral care that is possible within so small a community. Boys, their parents, and school staff all work together closely to ensure the happiness and welfare of the boys. The Choir School provides a complete academic education but is tailored directly towards choristers. Classes are arranged by year group – just as in other schools – though they are considerably smaller, with an average class size of six or seven. Such small classes allow an imaginative teaching style and plenty of individual attention. We teach the full range of subjects with excellent modern facilities and subject specialist classrooms. Expectations are high and pupils are routinely able to reach a very high standard at Common Entrance (or occasionally academic scholarship) in preparation for moving on to some of the most academically selective senior schools at the end of Year 8, many with valuable scholarships and bursaries. With such small classes, it is possible to offer considerable support within the normal classroom setting. Where we think that a boy would benefit from a short spell of one-to-one teaching this can usually be arranged with our learning support teacher who visits every week. He can make a general assessment and advise on strategies to adopt in the mainstream classroom. At Westbridge, we use Letters and Sounds, as our preferred method of delivering high-quality synthetic phonics. Letters and Sounds is a phonics resource published by the Department for Education and Skills in 2007. It aims to develop pupils speaking and listening skills and to prepare pupils for learning to read by developing their phonic knowledge and skills. We take our responsibility to prepare children for life in modern Britain very seriously. We do this through our values-based approach to education, and by active and thoughtful involvement with our community. At Westbridge, these values are reinforced regularly and in the following ways. Democracy: We have a school council that meets every month to discuss issues raised in class meetings. Every child on the school council is voted in by their class. Children have an annual questionnaire and subject-specific surveys where they can put forward their views about the school. The Rule of Law: Pupils are taught about the Westbridge Golden Rules when they join our school. Pupils are taught the value and reasons behind rules and laws, the responsibilities that this involves, and the consequences when laws are broken. Regular visits from the Community Police help to reinforce this message. Individual Liberty: Pupils are actively encouraged to make choices, knowing that they are in a safe and supportive environment. As a school, we educate and provide boundaries for pupils to make informed choices in a variety of ways, e.g. through our assemblies, E-Safety, and PSHE lessons. Mutual Respect: Mutual respect is at the heart of our school ethos of Grace, Love, and Fellowship. Pupils learn that their behaviors affect their rights and those of others. We actively encourage all members of the school community to treat each other with respect.
