West Ham Church School, founded in 1723, is a Voluntary Controlled Church of England School in the London Borough of Newham and the Diocese of Chelmsford. The school has a strong Christian ethos but also celebrates the many cultures and backgrounds from which the children, families, and staff have come. Welcome to West Green Primary School. Our friendly school is based in South Tottenham, Inner London. We are a happy and welcoming school where our children’s entitlement to succeed is at the heart of all that we do. Our children bring with them a wide range of personal experiences and many are new learners of English. Other subjects such as ICT and RE and PE are taught discretely. We use the Read Write Inc Programme to develop our children’s phonic knowledge and to teach them how to decode, blend and segment. Children begin this program in Nursery and receive daily lessons in both the Early Years and Key Stage 1. Children are grouped according to reading ability and are assessed on a half-termly basis. Once our children have completed the phonics program they begin the Language and Literacy program which teaches all elements of the English Curriculum, including Spelling Punctuation, and Grammar. All children receive a daily hour-long lesson on this subject. An additional skills session takes place daily to provide our children with a further opportunity to develop their reading and writing skills. The needs of our various cohorts are taken into account when planning these sessions. Our children also take home appropriate reading books daily and we encourage parents and siblings to read together as often as possible. For children who are struggling to learn to read fluently, we offer a range of proven interventions. These interventions are monitored closely and progress is carefully tracked. We follow the new National Curriculum across Key Stages 1 and 2. This year we have introduced the Maths Mastery Programme in Reception and Year 1 and plan to roll this program into Year 2 as of September 2015. Maths Mastery aims to develop children’s deep understanding of mathematics. They explore mathematical concepts in depth using objects, conversation, and problem-solving to build confidence in their understanding of Maths. The 3 key elements of Maths Mastery sessions are objects and pictures, language development, and problem-solving. From Years 2 to 6, the teaching of mathematics includes using and applying mathematics, counting and understanding numbers, knowing and understanding number facts, calculating, understanding shape, measuring, and handling data. It is hoped that through practical experience and discussion each child will gain confidence and develop mathematical awareness at his or her level of understanding. West Didsbury CE Primary School is a new primary school for Didsbury, which opened in September 2015. Running alongside Didsbury CE Primary, we are currently providing 180 much-needed places for the community for children in Reception, Year 1 and Year 2, having opened in a fully refurbished and purpose-built facility on the site of the old Ewing School on Central Road. The school will add a further two reception classes each academic year, until we become a thriving 420-pupil primary school running from Reception to Year Six in September 2022. West Didsbury CE Primary School will build on the outstanding education provided to the children of Didsbury by its sister school Didsbury CE Primary for over 400 years. Many Didsbury parents have spoken in the past of their frustration at not being able to access the excellent education and Christian ethos at Didsbury CE Primary, which this year received 205 preference applications for just 30 places. So West Didsbury CE Primary will be able to offer that same academic, creative and spiritual development to a further 60 children each year. Described as “a gem of a school in an outstanding location” by the Good Schools Guide, West Buckland School, founded in 1858 is set in 90 acres of stunning countryside close to the spectacular Atlantic coast in the South West of England. But it’s not just our location that is spectacular. Our campus has been transformed in recent years, with over £14 million having been spent on the facilities, creating an environment which combines beautiful, traditional buildings, reflecting the school’s proud beginnings, with modern, spacious, light buildings, indicative of the forward-thinking school that we have become. In 1852, a consumptive young clergyman called Joseph Lloyd Brereton became the rector of West Buckland. He had come to the fresh air of Exmoor for his health. He made friends with Lord Ebrington, (son of Earl Fortescue), who had also retired to Devon owing to ill health – in his case a bad eye infection. Ebrington (or Earl Fortescue, as he became on the death of his father) was as interested in education as Brereton. The result of their friendship was the West Buckland Farm and County School, set up – with a headmaster barely out of his teens, only three pupils, and a lot of optimism – in 1858. The School was run as a private shareholding company and was designed to attract the sons of the ‘middle class’ – farmers, local tradesmen, and so on. Ordinary people. For this reason, the fees were kept lower than average – and the facilities were corresponding that much more spartan. The curriculum was modern – no more endless Latin and Greek. More Science and Maths. Religious education was a non-denominational – Christian feeling rather than Christian dogma. It was way ahead of its time. The School prospered, the pupil numbers topping 150 within twenty-five years. But the Agricultural Depression of that time hit hard, and farmers could no longer afford even the modest fees. Numbers began to fall, a process not helped by a dispute between the then Headmaster and the Governors, which resulted in the Head leaving and taking over half the boys with him to set up another school. These and other troubles meant that the School came close to closure twice in a decade round about the turn of the century. However, under a gifted new Headmaster, the Revd Harries, the School recovered. It changed its form of organization from a private-share company to an independent fee-paying school, and it changed its name from the Devon County School too, simply, West Buckland School. Two world wars naturally made their impact, as they did on other schools, but by the end of the century, West Buckland had survived all crises and dramas. Through its Direct Grant status and, later, through the Assisted Places scheme, both of which removed the barrier to good secondary education which stood in the way of bright children from poor homes, it had continued to widen its scope of opportunity for the neighborhood. The opening of its gates to girls widened that scope further, and the development of a Preparatory School further still. It has grown to over 600 pupils – of whom about 120 are boarders – of both sexes, evenly split. It has been host to pupils from over fifty foreign countries too. It constantly tries to raise funds to develop its facilities, in sport and in the setting up of bursaries – to continue its policy of giving a chance to bright children from less fortunate backgrounds. In the twenty-first century, it continues to do its best for its pupils – still ordinary people – according to its lights, as it has always done, while at the same remaining loyal to the ideals and aspirations of the Revd.
