We are a Primary School in Neath, Wales for 3-11-year-old children. The school is situated within the Diocese of Llandaff. We are a voluntary aided school, in Neath Port Talbot County Borough. We are located in the center of Neath adjacent to St. David's Church. We believe that Church schools are special they have everything a Local Education Authority school has to offer and present the full Christian faith at the same time. Only a Church school is allowed to give specific church teaching and through our school, children come into close contact with the clergy, forming friendly links with our school church, St. David’s. As a Church School, we receive advice from the Diocesan Council for Education. Also, we benefit from the support services of the Local Education Authority. Our school governors and staff believe that you, as parents/carers, have a vital role to play in your children’s education. We look forward to developing a long-lasting partnership with you. At Alderman Davies Church in Wales Primary School, the health and safety of all children are of paramount importance. At Key Stage 2, from 7-11 years, our children follow the national curriculum We aim to give all our pupils equal access to broad, balanced, relevant learning activities that include all aspects of the National Curriculum. We place a great deal of emphasis on the development of skills across the curriculum. The National Curriculum is made up of core and foundation subjects, with objectives set for learning and programs of study stating essential teaching. The core subjects are Mathematics, English, Science and Religious Education which is a basic subject, but in a church, the school has the same status as the core subjects. The foundation subjects are Geography, History, Information Technology, Design Technology, Welsh, Art, Music, and Physical Education. Personal and Social Education is a very important part of our curriculum. Whenever appropriate, we link areas of learning to the child’s interest via a theme or topic. A range of teaching and learning approaches are used as appropriate and we recognize that learning is a continuous process and children acquire knowledge at varying speeds. Opportunities are provided to broaden experiences through visits to places of educational interest, linked with the class learning. We also encourage visitors from the locality and the community to foster links with our school. Our bespoke program of education comprises the national curriculum as well as additional varied learning opportunities and experiences. ‘The Questioning Curriculum’ encourages inquiry and promotes independent learning to develop self-confidence and resilience. We provide personal, social, and health education and promote independent thought through ‘Philosophy for Children.’ We recognize the importance of developing confident speakers and active listeners so that children are successful learners. Our curriculum also provides personal, social, and health education. It promotes independent thought through ‘Philosophy for Children’ and develops speaking and listening skills. Religious education is a compulsory subject as set out in the National Curriculum. Our Religious Education curriculum is taken from Newham’s Agreed Syllabus and Guidance which has been discussed agreed and ratified by the Newham Council, local teachers, and representatives of all the major faiths and denominations in our area. At William Davies Primary, staff and Governors are concerned that all aspects of school life are ‘fair’ and ‘safe’ for pupils, staff, parents, carers, and visitors. Safeguarding our children means adopting proactive measures to ensure that all systems and structures within our school minimize the risk of harm to our pupils. All those who come into contact with children and families in their everyday work, including people who do not have a specific role in child protection, have a duty to safeguard and promote the welfare of children. Our school has a very high proportion of children who are learning English as an additional language, children who have special educational needs, and children with a wide range of barriers to learning. To meet their wide range of learning needs and to overcome the passive nature of some children, it is essential to use interactive and visual teaching strategies to engage all children in their learning. We encourage children to be independent, evaluative, and self-aware in their learning. These skills will be developed with the pupils over their time in school and be age-appropriate. We encourage focussed speaking and listening activities in all year groups as well as providing opportunities for real experiences to develop language skills.
