Tucked away on Grafton Road our school was built in the 1880s. The foundations of the school were laid in 1883 and the school opened its doors in 1884 with three large departments for infants, boys, and girls. In total there were nearly 1800 children! This is very different in comparison to today where we have an average of 400 pupils. Over the years the school has been modernized and is now very different in some places. For example, three mezzanines have been built, the front school office refurbished, and the Carlton Community Learning Centre (CCLC) built. However, throughout all of this change and modernization, the school has maintained its historical appearance and …

The Christian beliefs of the school are set out in the first 20 chapters of the Westminster Confession of Faith. The school believes that these chapters faithfully reflect what the Bible teaches about God and His plan for salvation through the death of His Son, Jesus Christ. Because the Bible is God’s word, it forms the basis for thinking and understanding in every area of the curriculum. Because the Bible speaks about all of life, so does the school. Therefore, at Carinya, children are not sheltered inappropriately, from what is ugly or unpleasant in the world. Instead, at an age-appropriate time, they are taught about the world they will need to confront for Christ…

Many have gained entry to the most competitive Degree Courses such as Medicine and Dentistry. This, however, is not the whole story. What also stands out from the list of A-level results and University placements is the unusually wide range of Universities and Degree Courses to which our students have gained entry over the years. This is a reflection of the truly inclusive nature of Cardiff Academy. More importantly, it is a reflection of our core educational ethos – to push all students across the ent…

These are sage words but can be hard to live up to. It is all too easy to play safe and go with the flow. These in turn will lead them to question, to make decisions, and to act vigorously, both as individuals and through their engagement with others. Such characteristics are crucial if our pupils are g…
