School Day and the new Academic Year As a result of our recent consultation about changing the school day next year, I am pleased to inform you of the Governors’ decision. As you know, we are moving into our new building next spring and this is located next to Trelai Primary School. At Cardiff West Community High School we believe that additional extracurricular and enrichment activities make a vital contribution to the development of our students. All of our students are allowed to take part in extracurricular activities. Our inclusive extracurricular provision offers an extensive range of opportunities throughout the year for our students to broaden their experiences, enhance their skills and develop their interests further. We believe that our extracurricular activities provide our students with opportunities to value teamwork and a sense of culture and community whilst broadening their horizons and developing their independence. Each subject area ensures that activities beyond the classroom are planned to help enrich students’ experiences. Our students are taken on a variety of carefully planned visits linked to the curriculum providing an opportunity for them to learn in memorable contexts. For students working towards examinations, many subject areas offer lunchtime and after-school help and advice ensuring that our students are guided carefully through the academic year. Our additional revision sessions increase confidence and reduce anxiety ensuring that our students are well prepared for their examinations. We very much value our students’ ideas and opinions and the School Council play an active part in school life at Cardiff West Community High School. Elected representatives from each form group meet regularly to discuss important school issues and present their suggestions on how the school can be improved. We are committed to ensuring equality and diversity in our teaching and research. We currently hold the Athena SWAN Bronze award which recognizes our commitment to advancing women's careers in science, technology, engineering, maths, and medicine (STEMM). All teaching staff receives equality and diversity training on commencement of their role, but bespoke courses are arranged with HR for specific staff members eg admissions tutors, and senior staff. We aim to ensure that all teaching staff are aware of and fully understand issues relating to equality and diversity. We actively seek the views of students through staff/student panels and we conduct anonymous surveys to identify areas for improvement, including equality-related issues. Cardiff Steiner School is a non-selective, independent school in Cardiff for boys and girls aged 3 to 18. Our small, caring, and supportive school offers an inspiring and nurturing education based on the needs of the ‘whole child's – academic, physical, emotional, and spiritual. We currently have provision for children aged 3 to 15 (age 3 to 14 by 1st September 2017) with the School growing with them, up to age 18 by 2020. Founded in 1997 by a dedicated group of parents who sought a child-centered education for their children, we have grown and matured into the established school you see today. We opened our classes for children age 6 upwards in September 2012, building on the firm foundations of 15 years as a successful and thriving Kindergarten. We have a team of 25 dedicated and experienced staff providing Steiner Waldorf Education to children from Cardiff and the surrounding areas. We are an English-medium school, though children experience Welsh through songs and stories. Our holistic and organic approach promotes a healthy, ethical childhood – these are all ideas that remain with the children through to adult life. Cardiff and Vale College (CAVC) is one of the largest colleges in the country – transforming education and training across the capital region of Wales. Since Cardiff Academy began in 1999 our students have consistently achieved places at some of the most prestigious universities in the UK, including Oxford and Cambridge. Many have gained entry to the most competitive Degree Courses such as Medicine and Dentistry. This, however, is not the whole story. What also stands out from the list of A-level results and University placements is the unusually wide range of Universities and Degree Courses to which our students have gained entry over the years. This is a reflection of the truly inclusive nature of Cardiff Academy. More importantly, it is a reflection of our core educational ethos – to push all students across the entire ability range to achieve more than they ever believed possible. In 1999 the public name of the University changed to Cardiff University. In 2004 we merged with the University of Wales College of Medicine. The College of Medicine was part of the original University but had split off in 1931, making this a reunification. In December 2004, the Privy Council approved a new Supplemental Charter granting us university status. Our legal name changed to Cardiff University. We are now independent of the University of Wales. We awarded students admitted before 2005 University of Wales degrees. Since then, we award students at Cardiff University degrees. The College of Arms granted our coat of arms in 1988 after the merger with the University of Wales Institute of Science and Technology. The arms feature 'supporters,' which in heraldry are rarely granted to universities. The angel and the dragon are derived from the crests of the merged institutions. The motto "Gwirionedd, Undod a Chytgord" is the closing phrase of the prayer for the Church Militant in the 1662 Book of Common Prayer. It means "Truth, Unity, and Concord."
