About Me

  1. The purpose-built school, set in the heart of the Abbey precincts, offers a complete preparatory school boarding education but is tailored precisely to the needs of choristers. The Choir School is all but unique in that it is entirely dedicated to looking after the thirty or so boys who sing in Westminster Abbey as choristers. We offer a highly subsidized, first-class, all-around education within what is a secure, happy, and supportive environment. We aim to provide the best possible experience specifically for choristers, which prepares them for the next stage of their schooling, and indeed for adult life, whatever path they later choose to follow. These website pages can only offer an impression of the school and its activities. If you know of a boy aged between about 7 and 10 who would enjoy singing in this world-famous choir, would be delighted to meet you and to show you the school and something of the life of a Westminster Abbey Chorister. It could be a life-changing experience, as it has been for so many boys in the past. Do please contact us at any time. The school surely has one of the most generous staff to pupil ratios anywhere. With just 30 boys in the school, year groups are very small with normally between only five to seven boys in each. These small groups are taught by subject specialist staff, with excellent facilities, in dedicated curriculum areas. While the teachers are passionate about their subjects, they appreciate entirely the demands made on choristers and we can tailor the school day around the needs of the individual boys. Perhaps even more important is the pastoral care that is possible within so small a community. Boys, their parents, and school staff all work together closely to ensure the happiness and welfare of the boys. The Choir School provides a complete academic education but is tailored directly towards choristers. Classes are arranged by year group – just as in other schools – though they are considerably smaller, with an average class size of six or seven. Such small classes allow an imaginative teaching style and plenty of individual attention. We teach the full range of subjects with excellent modern facilities and subject specialist classrooms. Expectations are high and pupils are routinely able to reach a very high standard at Common Entrance (or occasionally academic scholarship) in preparation for moving on to some of the most academically selective senior schools at the end of Year 8, many with valuable scholarships and bursaries. With such small classes, it is possible to offer considerable support within the normal classroom setting. Where we think that a boy would benefit from a short spell of one-to-one teaching this can usually be arranged with our learning support teacher who visits every week. He can make a general assessment and advise on strategies to adopt in the mainstream classroom. For a more detailed educational assessment, we advise parents to seek an educational psychologist’s report, the cost of which is borne by parents.
  2. “Battle Abbey School, an independent school in East Sussex, is extraordinarily special. A glimpse through its enchanting gatehouse tells you that you are not only in a historically significant place but also in a school that has an incomparable character. Battle Abbey’s ideal size, wonderful pastoral care, impressive facilities, continuity of education from Nursery to Sixth Form, and holistic approach allied to its warm, good-humored and highly supportive working environment make for a very inclusive and unique educational establishment. The School manages to blend traditional values to new, innovative thinking in teaching and learning whilst still providing a wide range of extra-curricular activities and many opportunities to support and serve the local and wider community. It has a proven track record in many curriculum areas and has developed an enviable reputation for adding value academically in a mixed ability setting. Battle Abbey’s ethos is highly distinctive and focuses on nurturing a close-knit family atmosphere, encouraging active participation from its students, promoting an international perspective through its borders, and encouraging self-respect, self-confidence, and compassion for the needs of others. It is the sort of school where students settle very quickly and contribute willingly and positively whilst developing a genuine pride in their school and a real passion for their learning. The Ethos and Aims of Battle Abbey School From the Nursery through to the Abbey, we are a caring and highly regarded family school with exceptional pastoral care and sensitive discipline, accompanied by strong academic results, focusing on the importance of each child. With our enviable locations, impressive and talented students, loyal and dedicated teachers, international dimension provided by our wonderful boarding community, and our distinctive ethos based on kindness, compassion, friendship, mutual respect, and trust – Battle Abbey is a special place to study. The School’s rich history and many traditions are based on Christian values and the school welcomes students and families from all faiths and none. It combines the modern with the traditional in terms of facilities and academic outlook and has an innovative and engaging approach to teaching and learning. Also, the promotion of soft skills, self-confidence, concern for others, personal responsibility, and leadership means that the School provides a first-rate all-around education where students feel they belong and where they invariably develop academically, socially, and emotionally. Students enjoy the friendly and purposeful atmosphere at Battle Abbey and have a real affection for the School. From the very start at the Prep School, they learn to be inquisitive and creative individuals who are challenged to do their best. They learn the rewards that are the result of hard work both in and out of the classroom. They learn to compete hard in all areas of school life but also to serve, support, and think of others. They learn how to develop as people and to become better team players and those manners and good conduct matter. They learn how to interact with students from all over the world as well as with people of all ages. They make great friends along the way, have lots of fun in a safe environment, and develop very strong relationships with their motivated and supportive teachers. We also have a unique enrichment program that sees students introduced to subjects, topics, and issues that are not covered in a typical exam syllabus. Furthermore, we are very good at finding skills and aptitudes in students that they don’t always know that they possess and we try very hard to develop those newly found strengths and interests. Academic success is something we value highly, but we are proud of the achievements of our pupils in all fields. Our pupils invariably achieve their best because we believe the pastoral care and the relationships that exist are exceptional. In essence, the School aims to create passionate and enthusiastic life-long learners and also to inspire its young people to become positive and engaging members of their communities – locally, nationally, and globally. Specific aims are: To continue to inspire pupils to do their best in all that they undertake and to acknowledge and reward the achievements of each individual according to their aptitudes and interests. To promote balanced social development through warm and sensitive pastoral care within our disciplined day and boarding community. To prepare pupils for life after school by providing an all-round education in which pupils of all ages are valued as individuals and develop the self-respect, self-confidence, and empathy for the needs and desires of others that will enable them to contribute positively to our changing world. To continue to develop the facilities and resources of the school to ensure that they underpin the achievement of the school’s aims and objectives.

Pupils in the school will be prepared for life in a multicultural society and will be assisted in appreciating the benefits of diversity. We actively encourage all our pupils to participate in school and extra-curricular activities and as far as possible we take positive action to make sure that the diverse school population is represented in activities, surveys, and our Pupil Council.
  4. Barking Abbey is a mixed school of approximately 2,000 pupils. It is traditionally heavily oversubscribed and each year takes 270 new pupils. We are proud of the fact that we are a multi-cultural community and we seek to celebrate our diversity in as many ways as possible. Tolerance of, respect for, and understanding of others are vital aspects of preparing young people for adult life. Our vision is to provide a happy, caring, and stimulating environment where all students will recognize and be given opportunities to maximize their potential – academically, spiritually, and socially - and ensure that they are well equipped to meet the challenges of education, work, and life. The school is a consultant school for the Schools Network and the Youth Sport Trust and has a large number of awards. Recently it has been given the e-Safety Charter Mark Sportsmark Gold and Artsmark Gold and International School status. Barking Abbey was named State School of the Year in 2010 by School Sports Magazine and National Sports College of the Year in 2011 by the Daily Telegraph. 'Cafeteria' system operates in both Lower and Upper School Dining Halls where there is a wide variety of items available. Pupils in Years 7 to 10 may either purchase a school lunch or have a packed lunch and must remain on the premises throughout the entire lunch break. Year 11 students, to reflect their growing maturity and responsibilities, are allowed off the premises at lunchtime, providing their behavior is appropriate. Former students are warmly invited to join the Barking Abbey Alumni Association which will help them keep in touch with the Barking Abbey community. There are lots of ways to get involved, from inspiring our sixth formers to go to university to motivating a year 7 student through mentoring. Future First is a charity that helps schools and colleges stay in touch with their students after they leave. Signing up to the Future First network will allow you to keep up to date with news from Barking Abbey. Even after you have left, Barking Abbey can provide opportunities to learn new skills and maybe get the job you want. We believe that your school, the former students and the young people who are still here could all benefit from staying connected. Sports Leaders UK launched the Leadership Academy initiative which is a scheme to reward and recognize some of its best centers that go beyond the call of duty, and thus, Barking Abbey was recognized as one of these centers and was invited to become a Sports Leadership Academy. Our Leadership Academy acts as a beacon of good practice to other organizations in our local area. We not only deliver Sports Leaders UK's awards and qualifications with high levels of success and enthusiasm but by meeting the criteria, we have a very positive impact on the local community with regards to increased voluntary hours, community placements, and events. We have developed a range of creative ideas which go beyond the learning outcomes of the Sports Leaders UK leadership awards and qualifications and offer our learners a pathway of additional opportunities, and a package of initiatives that motivate and inspire our pupils to take part in sports leadership and volunteering programs. Barking Abbey was founded in 1922 as one of the first co-educational grammar schools in England. At the time, it was situated in a largely rural area, with fields and farmland close by. Gradually, as Barking began to expand as a residential center, the school became the focal point for the community with an educational provision of national standing. In 1970, Barking Abbey Grammar School was merged with Park Modern School to form what has now become ‘Barking Abbey School: A Specialist Sports and Humanities College’. Many traditions of the old schools remain, but with important developments to enable the school and its pupils to be fully prepared to meet the challenges and opportunities of life in the twenty-first century. One thing remains central, however: we are an outstanding success. The school draws its pupils from a large number of primary and junior schools particularly from the London Boroughs of Barking and Dagenham and Redbridge. Barking Abbey has a very large Sixth Form of over 600 students. A large range of AS, A2, and BTEC courses is available to our 16-19-year-olds. The school operates on two sites that are just under a mile apart. Years 7 and 8 are housed at Longbridge Road and Years 9 – 13 at Sandringham Road. In recent years, the school has enjoyed great success across many areas. In 1997 it was among the first six schools to be awarded Specialist Sports College status. At the same time, a grant of £2.1 million from the Sport England Lottery Unit and the Borough of Barking and Dagenham enabled the building of a large Leisure Centre. The GLP in England aims to create a national network of like-minded schools, committed to equipping young people to make a positive contribution to a globalized world by supporting their teachers to deliver effective teaching and learning about development and global issues. Oxfam, one of the GLP consortium partners, has recently been working with Barking Abbey to develop school-led CPD sessions for other schools in the GLP. This training will meet the aims of the GLP and will focus on embedding global citizenship into the curriculum and school ethos.
  5. The Catholic Faith is the most important aspect of St. Michael's Preparatory School, which is run by the Norbertine Fathers of St. Michael's Abbey. Located on the grounds of a thriving Roman Catholic monastery in Southern California, the students attend daily Mass, nightly Adoration of the Blessed Sacrament, and are given 4 years of solid Catholic instruction. During their Junior Year, St. Michael's students visit Rome, the heart of the Catholic world, for two weeks. The number one reason parents send their sons to St. Michael's Preparatory is to be formed in the Catholic Faith. St. Michael's Preparatory School ranks among the top 50 Catholic high schools in the nation. It is the only boarding school on that list. One hundred percent of our graduates go on to higher learning. With a teacher/student ratio of 1:4, every St. Michael student receives an almost personalized academic instruction. St. Michael's Preparatory offers a classical curriculum, including the study of Latin, Logic, and Philosophy. St. Michael's boarding school environment and its single-gender education provide a rich culture that both supports and challenges its students. Living together, studying together, and growing up together, all under the watchful care of Norbertine Priests, the students of St. Michael's Preparatory reach a level of maturity that far surpasses that of their peers. A full sports program rounds off the St.Michael education. All St. Michael’s students plan on going to college. College counseling at St. Michael’s, therefore, focuses on college readiness (in terms of standardized testing), individual and group advisement regarding college choice, and financial aid support for both the student and his family throughout the college decision-making and application process. Individual student appointments during the junior and senior years assist students in doing online college searches and in determining which colleges the student will apply to. Juniors and seniors go on a formal tour of a local college, attend a College Fair Night, and hear presentations by college reps who visit St. Michael’s during the school year. Students may research individual colleges by viewing the college file and scholarship notebook available in the school library. St. Michael’s Preparatory School witnesses to the fullness of the Catholic faith and teaches infidelity to a sound Catholic intellectual tradition. St. Michael’s is exclusively a boarding school for boys, grades nine through twelve, who are capable of benefiting from and contributing to its spiritual and academic community. The School provides the academic attainments necessary for acceptance to a four-year college or undergraduate program at a university in the United States of America. St. Michael’s is served by Norbertine priests and seminarians and by a committed lay faculty and staff.
  6. St. Anselm's Abbey School, where students are known, respected, and cared for by faculty, staff, and peers were exploring ideas and loving learning are the norm where contentment and challenge walk hand-in-hand where leadership and extracurricular opportunities abound and where the presence of the Benedictine monastic community stamps a profound and lasting influence on the educational experience of our young scholars. At St. Anselm's, a Roman Catholic, independent School for talented, motivated, and inquisitive young men in grades 6-12, each student is a valued and integral part of a joyful and inspiring campus. In this enclave, he can find pitch-perfect harmony in serving others while walking, with utter confidence, alongside the beam of light God intends for him to discover, explore, and, ultimately, pursue. An ever-inclusive community in the spirit of Saint Benedict, we welcome and respect students of all faiths, races, nationalities, and circumstances. Centered in equal and complementary parts around a rigorous classical education (truly unparalleled city-wide) and the rich heritage of the 1,500-year-old Benedictine educational tradition, St. Anselm's has been shepherding and shaping academically gifted boys who are eager to work to their capacity for over 75 years now. Coming of age as a member of the St. Anselm's student body means that a boy will be exposed to a superior academic program that encourages balance in mind, body, and spirit. While the School's track record of strong AP participation and results, high levels of National Merit recognition, and impressive college matriculation lists are all elements of St. Anselm's experience of which we are rightly proud. In part known for, it is on the intangible or "unmeasurable" side of the ledger where our students shine all the more brightly, for every St. Anselm's graduate, to a man, is thoughtful, kind, reflective, of good cheer, inventive, team-centered, generous, determined, and independent. Founded in 1942, we remain committed to the traditional view that the essential discipline is imposed by a demanding and enriching curriculum, focused on a balanced and thorough exposure to the major academic disciplines. Over these past 75 years, our curriculum has been dramatically expanded to offer more science, technology, language, music, and fine arts to meet our student body's diverse needs and interests. Yet we still have a very challenging educational program designed for students of above-average abilities. St. Anselm's Abbey School gives academically gifted young men a rigorous classical education in a Benedictine monastery's sacred space. We aim to educate our students to become moral persons, intellectually, and spiritually prepared for life in an ever-changing world. A monastic school is an exercise in the community. We try to help every student understand his importance and dignity as a member of this community. Our code of behavior is a firm one but that at the same time possesses a certain Benedictine gentleness. We hope that we may introduce to our young men something of the spirit of monastic life in the twenty-first century, to put them in touch with the tradition of dedication, service, prayer, and scholarship that has been the bedrock of Benedictine stability for the last 1,500 years. As an educational institution, we try to foster Saint Benedict's notion of ora et labora, prayer, and work, as the essential means of achieving peace and understanding. We believe that the Rule of Saint Benedict is an essential and enduring educational text that has successfully guided many schools and universities across the vast chasm of time, from the ancient world of the sixth century to the dawn of the twenty-first. The concepts of stability, perseverance, mutual support, hard work, and prayer presented in the Rule have withstood the real test of time. Our patron, Saint Anselm, was Archbishop of Canterbury, the foremost educator of his day, and is considered the Father of Scholasticism. At St. Anselm's Abbey School, we continue to emulate his drive for academic excellence. Anselm understood the monastic charism to be provocative and empowering. In a Benedictine school, one finds the same potent energy. This peculiarly transformative power allows a student to develop his talents in a community free from conflict through this Pax in Sapientia. A monastic school allows one to seek a life of truth in a fraternity of integrity as the minds of students, teachers, and monks intertwine. Our monastic community is a fraternity, a group of people linked by a common purpose. But Benedict offers a shrewd twist on the concept he believed that a well-run "school of the Lord's service" should be something elite, an institution that not everyone can join. These dual concepts of "eliteness" and "fraternity" have been essential keys to the Benedictines' staying power and continuing success over the centuries. In the context of our community, the terms elite and fraternity do not convey negative images of snobbery and exclusivity, but they do contain very positive and powerful organizational lessons. Likewise, students in a monastic school belong to an elite communal brotherhood. They choose to be focused and use the talents that God has given them—not just for themselves, but for the benefit of those around them. And our students choose daily to begin anew, to start over now and forever—to develop the gifts of their minds, bodies, and spirits to their full strengths.
  7. The Portsmouth Abbey education is grounded in the Western intellectual tradition, from ancient Greece and Rome, and continuing into this century. This liberal arts curriculum is balanced by a focus on spirituality, athletics, arts, and co-curricular. The Abbey prepares you for post-secondary academic work by providing a broad and liberal education in the Benedictine tradition. We foster crucial academic and life skills through a structured sequence of courses. Our curriculum celebrates the classics of the Western canon. It addresses three fundamental objectives: developing a common background of knowledge among students to use the study of a classical language and ancient history to train students in disciplined thinking and give students a thorough grounding in and appreciation for the written and spoken word. Elite colleges, top graduate schools, and the most highly skilled professions demand of high school graduates what they have always required—outstanding skills of literacy, numeracy, and reasoning, and ability to master content in core academic disciplines, fluency in the cultural literacy of our Western tradition, and the initiative to work hard and to manage one's learning confidently. Practically speaking, we offer a range of honors, accelerated, and AP core curricular and elective courses. The academic year is divided into Fall, Winter, Spring—and each time ends with a formal examination period, which determines twenty-five percent of the term grade. At the end of each term, grades and detailed comments from the student's teachers, houseparent, and athletics coach are reported to parents. In addition to traditional secondary disciplines, we offer several electives to broaden your college preparation, including offerings in the fine arts and advanced work in classical and modern languages. We offer a wide range of honors, accelerated, and Advanced Placement (AP) courses. Your high school years reveal so much about your future self, the adult you are becoming. And the place in which you spend those years imbues you with certain enduring qualities. Students undergo a definite transformation during their time at Portsmouth Abbey and build unique traditions and memories. And it's a transformation they never forget. At the core of the mission of Portsmouth Abbey School is the desire to "grow in knowledge and grace" in a life dedicated to Christ. In light of this basic apostleship, the school's spiritual life is inspired by the Benedictine ideal of community life of work and prayer ("ora et labora"). As Saint Benedict sought in his Rule for monks, so too does the school community seek a life of spiritual growth, centered in intellectual development and balanced with physical and social activities, recreation, and rest. To this end, oriented by the Catholic tradition, we offer a comprehensive and structured academic, athletics, and residential life program. That's because, at Portsmouth Abbey, we place a very high value on living in a close-knit community. We are fiercely loyal. We support each other through triumphs and challenges. We arrive as strangers and quickly grow into friends. And we keep those bonds of friendship alive long after we leave. The presence of non-Catholic and non-Christian members of the school community creates a rich diversity and promotes an atmosphere of acceptance and respect for various religious traditions. This diverse community is drawn into a reflection on an attentiveness to the spirit's life as it lives out its central mission. Our conviction at Portsmouth Abbey School is that God is at the very center of the human search for meaning and that the perennial social questions - Who and I? Where do I come from? Where am I going? How do I get there? - all find their answer in God. Accordingly, we seek to promote our students' lives a lifelong search for God as the beginning and end of their lives. This spiritual education of the heart, soul, and mind is the basis for intellectual and academic work at Portsmouth Abbey School. We believe it is vitally important to introduce our students to the classics and the best Western intellectual tradition, which includes both the humanities and the sciences. Portsmouth Abbey School develops the mind, heart, and body through an integrated and ordered learning progression in a structured environment. Our students are provided an excellent opportunity to discover fundamental truths, beliefs, and texts that have challenged every generation since antiquity and develop an abiding love of learning. We are committed to living as a community that values each of its members. Portsmouth Abbey School is inspired by a monastic presence and the Benedictine tradition of everyday life, including prayer, study, work, and recreation. We welcome students from diverse backgrounds while encouraging an appreciation for the Catholic faith. We seek to honor every person's dignity as a child of God and strive to nurture the talents of each individual for service and leadership in our community and the larger world.
  8. Belmont Abbey College is a small, Catholic Benedictine liberal arts institution. We find our center in Jesus Christ and believe in developing the whole person—body and spirit. Our mission is to provide an education that will enable our students to lead lives of integrity, succeed professionally, become responsible citizens, and be a blessing to themselves and others. Founded in 1876 by Benedictine monks, we celebrate the 1,500-year-old Benedictine monastic tradition of prayer and learning. Though we are founded on our Catholic, Benedictine traditions, we welcome students' diverse body regardless of religious affiliation. The Cardinal Newman Society calls Belmont Abbey College one of the top Catholic colleges in America for faithfulness and affordability. First, Things Magazine recently named the Abbey America's #1 "School on the Rise, Filled with Excitement." We have also received a "Top-Tier Ranking" by U.S. News and World Report and recently named "A best Southeastern College" by The Princeton Review. Located just 10 miles west of Charlotte, NC, Belmont Abbey College is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. The Abbey is the only Catholic college between northern Virginia and Florida. We are glad that you are interested in our school, and hope that you will pay us a visit in person. At Belmont Abbey, you will find a physically beautiful campus, a friendly atmosphere, and classes that will stimulate your mind, cultivate your spirit, and gladden your heart. At the Abbey, your classes will be small. Your professors will know you by name. You will get to know your classmates well, and they will get to know you. When you come to Belmont Abbey College, you come to a school that has been in Belmont for more than one hundred thirty years. You become part of the Catholic intellectual tradition that founded the world's first universities, which continues to animate many of them today. You also partake of the Benedictine tradition of learning and holiness that has been a light to individuals and nations for 1,500 years. To be part of the Belmont Abbey College community is a privilege and a blessing. We believe that everyone who comes here helps to build up our community of faith and learning. We invite you to join us and to become part of the family that is Belmont Abbey College. An Abbey education, grounded in the liberal arts, will help you seek, love, and serve the Truth. At Belmont Abbey College, our mission is to cultivate the ideals of excellence, virtue, and faith, so that each generation may soar higher and further than the last. Located near Charlotte, North Carolina, we are private, liberal arts, Catholic college dedicated to faith and reason. Though our academics are of the highest quality, we are also dedicated to keeping higher education affordable. Recognized by the Newman Guide, U.S. News & World Report, and The Princeton Review, at the Abbey, you will find a sky full of possibilities that will lead you to your passion and your purpose. Come to the Abbey, find your wings, and fly. In our day, College and university education are associated with specialized preparation for a career – and as lucrative a one as possible to pay off the high cost of education! With good reason, most students are concerned about one thing: "What should I major in? What program of classes will get me the farthest in life?" Here, "the farthest" is usually defined in terms of finance and sometimes also in terms of personal job satisfaction and social belonging. There is nothing wrong with this kind of reasoning. We encourage it at Belmont Abbey College by our goal to have you "succeed professionally and be a blessing to yourselves and others." However, this is not the whole story: we have other goals as well: to have you "lead lives of integrity and become responsible citizens." This goal points to areas of life known under the names of ethics, politics, and theology. Are these real subjects taught and learned, or are they strictly matters of individual or family-inherited opinion? There is also the Fine Arts (drama, music, creative writing, etc.): does anybody need to understand them if he is not trying to be an artist? What about mathematics – should they be studied by those who "hate" math? Should English, world literature, or history be forced upon those who "hate" to write papers? Should a young adult be required to learn more about fields that will probably never contribute to their future income? The Core Curriculum is Belmont Abbey's "yes" answer to all these questions. Many students today object to this: a list of "required courses" resembles High School and sends the message that 17 – 22-year-old persons, living away from their parents, are not yet fully equipped to be their masters, choosing only those courses that fulfill their dreams, as currently embraced at that particular age. We entirely agree that College should be a place to begin to fulfill your dreams beyond what happened in High School. Moreover, one big part of that is filling you with new dreams – by requiring you to study what you may not understand or appreciate. Unlike High School – where the civil governments mandate requirements in each state – at the college level, each institution voluntarily chooses its own set of general requirements to provide a structured education according to that institution's vision. Accreditation pertains primarily to the academic standards of the particular subjects: each College is only obliged to remain faithful to its mission when it comes to the core curriculum. Therefore, core curriculum offerings at any college are a result of faculty competence and availability and the vision of education that guides each particular institution.
  9. Welcome to At Childwall Abbey School. We are very proud to announce that Childwall Abbey School has achieved the Artsmark Gold Award. This recognizes the value we place on giving our school community opportunities to access and enjoy as many cultural experiences as possible. These include many visits outside school, to museums, art galleries, and concert halls, as well as enabling our pupils to develop their performance skills, interests, and appreciation of the value of art in all its forms in our society through our curriculum. Liverpool is a culturally rich city and we are proud to live and learn in such a vibrant place. At Childwall Abbey School we cover the National Curriculum core subjects. To ensure we meet the needs of all our youngest children we provide a pastoral approach to teaching and learning. For at least 50% of the week pupils in Years 6, 7, and 8 remain with their form tutors for ‘core’ lessons such as English and mathematics (which begin every day). This ensures rapid and successful transition into the school, providing stability and consistency whilst the children familiarise themselves with our staff and expectations. Years 6, 7, and 8 participate in projects which incorporate several subjects – such as geography, history, religious education, art, technology (design and food), science, modern foreign language, and computer skills. Students are taught by subject specialists from within a small staff team (mainly Year 6, Year 7 & Year 8 pastoral teachers), who become familiar to the children very rapidly. All classes are supported by a Learning Support Officer, who stays with them in all lessons. Childwall Abbey School Sixth Form provides learners with the knowledge, understanding, skills, and real-life experiences to grow into self-reliant, well-rounded, and independent young adults who are aware of how to keep themselves safe. The sixth form staff provides opportunities for students to develop self-confidence, academic achievement, and personal independence. All sixth form students continue to study skills in English, Maths, and Computing. These subjects allow students to develop their Literacy, Numeracy, and Computing skills in a real-life context and provide students with the opportunity to maintain continuity and progression throughout their school life. The students can access BTEC, GCSE, Entry Level, Functional Skills, and Entry Pathways qualifications which are all recognized by colleges and employers, providing students with a greater range of options and opportunities. All the activities and coursework, undertaken in sixth-form, count towards nationally recognized ASDAN qualifications and certificates, including C.o. P.E. (Certificate of Personal Effectiveness) A.o. P.E. (Award of Personal Effectiveness) optional short courses including Peer Teaching, Volunteering and Leadership Skills. Students complete challenges that help them become more independent and employable. These units provide a platform for further planning of individual learning goals and personal assessment. The units consist of working with others to improve learning and performance problem-solving planning and carrying out research communication through discussion planning and giving an oral presentation. Numerous student choice short courses are also offered. Students get the opportunity to explore different issues and themes through the work of other artists and designers. The process allows students to become independent thinkers, to be more aware of their culture and environment and those around them. Students are encouraged to make decisions and work through problems finding their own, individual reactions and responses. The curriculum is diverse to allow free expression and access to all students regardless of ability. Working in groups, pairs, as a whole class and independently, students can develop their social skills. At Childwall Abbey School, we place great emphasis upon enjoyment and physical use of musical instruments within our Music lessons. Underpinned by basic musical theory and instrument knowledge, we endeavor to engage learners through accessible aspects of music – playing instruments. We use a modified National Curriculum to meet the personalized needs of our pupils. We are integrating the revised National Curriculum for Music. Childwall Abbey School Physical Education Department takes great strides to create a calm and working environment for every pupil and always endeavors to create lasting friendships amongst its pupils. Our pupils focus on a wide range of skills and activities, inspired by the Stepping Stones and ASDAN schemes. The activities can be used towards an ASDAN certificate of accreditation which offers progression into follow-on programs leading to national qualifications. We aim to make our lessons active, stimulating and topical, and ensure that teachers have specialist knowledge and skills to teach PSHCE education successfully.

Through these, children can take responsibility for their learning, make informed choices, and solve problems. Our children need to develop skills and attitudes that will enable them to learn how to learn, become more socially adept, and effectively manage their feelings and emotions. Our school will foster an ethos of challenge and high expectations with high self-esteem, respect, and understanding of others' cultures and beliefs. We will seek to provide experiential and explorative learning opportunities, building on what the children already know. We believe it is vital to work in partnership with parents and actively encourage them to become involved in the school's life. We recognize the importance of continuity in the learning process and share expertise and experience with other schools and settings. We will raise awareness of broader issues by involving members of the learning community and exploring the surrounding environment. Learning is a life-long process, and it is our responsibility as adults to model active learning. Therefore, this vision statement applies to everyone who has a role to play in the provision of education at our school. View full school

  12. We are a successful local school and we simply want the best for the children we teach. We want children to love learning: when they are with us and after they have moved on. We want them to enjoy learning in and out of the classroom - so we provide a curriculum that interests, excites, and engages children. Standards are crucially important. We want children to make the best possible progress – to achieve the highest standards in learning – so that they see themselves as successful learners. We want them to be fully equipped for later stages of education and the rest of their adult life. High-quality relationships and good behavior are at the center of everything we do. Children and adults in our school have relationships built on trust and respect. Children are taught to get along very well together. This is why the school has a ‘great community atmosphere that visitors speak so highly of. Our school is expanding. This is an exciting time for us as we look to the future. We are delighted to serve a community that is growing. We look forward to increasing our teaching team and the facilities we offer over the next three years - but we are determined to keep hold of our close relationships between children, staff, and parents. The school motto is Working hard and caring for each other. We place great emphasis on teaching children the value of sustained effort and encourage them to approach their learning with resilience and persistence. As well as academic learning, we teach children the importance of social learning: getting along well with others and taking care of one another. This helps us to create a community where everyone feels safe and happy. Merton Abbey offers to all children a high standard of academic and social education, enabling and challenging all pupils to reach their full potential. We provide a safe, secure, stimulating environment in which we encourage all children to value themselves and others to make the right choices and develop into responsible and caring members of society. At Merton Abbey Primary School one of our key aims are to prepare the children for life in modern Britain. We want our children to leave us as confident, respectful individuals who can participate fully in our society. We ensure that the fundamental British Values are introduced, discussed, and experienced through the ethos and work of the school. All curriculum areas provide a vehicle for furthering understanding of these concepts and, in particular, our RE and PSHE lessons provide excellent opportunities to deepen and develop children’s understanding. We have classes from nursery to Y6. Teachers in these classes work together to plan the curriculum so that there is continuity and progression across the age ranges. Work is planned in Topics, lasting half a term, which include activities and learning in all curriculum areas the highest proportion of your child’s time will be spent on English and Mathematics. In each class, children are divided into groups, according to their learning needs and styles for some work and activities, and at other times the class teacher will gather them together as a whole class. We use discussion and paired work to enable the children to clarify issues and talk about their learning. All classes also have a teaching assistant so that there is a good adult/child ratio. Classrooms are organized so that children have all the apparatus and materials they need readily to hand in and learn to make choices independently of the teacher. At times a group of children will work under the direction of the teacher and at other times they will be given a task to complete with only the minimum of help. From time to time, educational visits are planned in connection with classwork. You may be asked to make a voluntary contribution towards the cost of these visits. Please speak to the Headteacher if this causes any difficulty. Teachers may also ask for parents to volunteer to help supervise the children on outings, and this can be a good way to get a better understanding of what your child is learning. Merton Abbey has a governing body, as do all other state schools in Merton. Our purpose is to help the school achieve the best for all our children. We do this by working with the headteacher and staff to make sure that teaching is excellent, good resources are available to help children learn, and money is well spent. We also read and act upon the many documents sent to school, so that we are confident that Merton Abbey operates legally and gets the support and grants, to which it is entitled. Another of our roles is to appoint the headteacher and assist in other senior appointments. The full governing body meets once a term and we also have regular committees which focus particularly on school standards, staffing, and the budget. Governors are volunteers and are appointed to represent all parts of the school community: parents, teaching and support staff, Merton, and community interests. We are expected to attend meetings regularly and are welcomed in to visit the school during working hours so that we have opportunities to talk to staff and children. This helps us to understand how Merton Abbey works and what we can do to make it even better.

  16. View full school
  17. View full school
  18. View full school

  21. View full school
  22. View full school

  24. View full school
  25. View full school
