About Me

  1. Founded in 1882, Pacific Union College is a Seventh-day Adventist Christian college with a strong liberal arts tradition. Located in the heart of California's Napa Valley, the college offers a fully accredited four-year program. It emphasizes academic excellence, authentic spiritual experience, and service to local and worldwide communities. Pacific Union College is a Seventh-day Adventist learning community offering an excellent Christ-centered education that prepares its students for productive lives of useful human service and uncompromising personal integrity. Student Life is the gateway to a wide variety of services, opportunities, and information offered to students across campus. Out-of-classroom activities complement, support, and integrate with in-class learning to promote Christian student development. Student Life is under the direction of the vice president for Student Life and dean of students and comprises several specific departments with specialized responsibilities. Our goal is to enhance student life quality, build community, and help students meet the challenges of their college experience and their intellectual, spiritual, and personal development. Outstanding academics is a point of pride at Pacific Union College and a crucial part of our reputation for educating successful students. It connects many aspects of life at PUC, bringing an atmosphere of excellence to the campus and resulting in practical payoffs like acceptance letters and high scores. Community. Asking big questions. Expressing faith in worship and service. This is a campus with a dedication to honest inquiry, individual experience of faith, and expressing spirituality through active service. Students are always involved in prayer and Bible study groups, unique and varied worship services, and a very active core of service programs and ministry groups. Pacific Union College is a learning community with a full calendar and a busy campus. Student activity is hardly limited to the classroom, and campus events range from concerts to service projects to prayer gatherings. Excellence here means a broad learning experience, a rich social community, and the experience and exploration of faith and human service. Student Financial Services is committed to working with you through the sometimes-complicated world of financing your education at PUC. We will connect you with available resources, scholarships, grants, and loans to make paying for college easier. Whether your college fund is older than you are or if your family's budget always seems to be tight, you probably have lots of questions about financial aid. We will help you find answers, discover the types of financial aid you are eligible for, and explain the ins and outs of finding your bottom line. We will also pray with you through the entire process because we know there is no substitute for learning in a real community of faith. When choosing a college, it makes sense to look at costs, but that is only one factor to consider as you plan for your future. Quality of education, your abilities and interests, and the college's programs, location, and alumni success should all play a role in your decision. Your PUC Student Financial Aid Counselor will work with you to find the best combination of options for funding your education. The PUC Career and Counseling Center provides the campus with career counseling, personal counseling, and testing services. We endorse a holistic approach in working with students by facilitating the integration of the individual's emotional, intellectual, physical, social, and spiritual qualities. We believe that each person is a child of God and is created with a purpose and mission in life. Our goal is to assist each client, regardless of race, creed, or gender, to work toward reaching his/her potential academically, personally, interpersonally, spiritually, and occupationally. Our career counselor can discuss career options, self-assessment, values, skills, interests, goals, and job-seeking strategies. We also have resources to help students develop practical interview skills and write resumes and application letters. The PUC story begins with the Seventh-day Adventist Church, which has long had a strong education commitment. During the late 1800s and early 1900s, the church established schools and colleges near major population centers across North America. In 1874 the church founded its first college in Battle Creek, Michigan. A few years later, the rapidly growing California church began looking for a good school location in Northern California. One of PUC's significant contributions to the Adventist system was introducing graduate work in 1934 to establish a very successful summer program called the Advanced Bible School. After the 1936 session, the school was transferred to Washington, D.C., and became the Seventh-day Adventist Theological Seminary. Today the college's beautiful natural setting and California style continue to welcome hundreds of students each year, offering a community of real learning and spiritual authenticity. In that same month, eleven teachers held classes for former slaves at two missions in the city. By November 1865, the Mission Society had established and was officially holding classes for Richmond Theological School for Freedmen, one of the four institutions forming the "Union" that gives our University its name. 8. Since 1795, Union College has been defining—and redefining—the meaning of a liberal arts education. When the classics were considered the only acceptable field of study, Union introduced a bachelor's degree with an emphasis on history, modern languages, science, and mathematics. We were the first liberal arts college in the nation to offer to engineer. We created a new vision for campus life by establishing Minerva Houses, which bring student and faculty together outside the classroom for both social and academic activities. Union College, founded in 1795, is a scholarly community dedicated to shaping the future and understanding the past. Faculty, staff, and administrators welcome diverse and talented students into our community, work closely with them to provide a broad and deep education and guide them in finding and cultivating their passions. We do this with a wide range of disciplines and interdisciplinary programs in the liberal arts and engineering and academic, athletic, cultural, and social activities, including opportunities to study abroad and participate in undergraduate research and community service. Our students develop the analytic and reflective abilities needed to become engaged, innovative, and ethical contributors to an increasingly diverse, global, and technologically complex society. At Union, we cultivate an environment that's as conducive to studying Shakespearean sonnets or neuroscience as it is to starting a new club or organizing a fundraiser for a community in need. More than 60 percent of Union students receive financial assistance. We understand that navigating the financial aid process can be overwhelming to families. We strive to keep the process as simple as possible. If at any time you have questions, our financial aid staff is available to help you. We encourage you to become as familiar as possible with the necessary details about financial aid. This site's instructions and resources will guide you through the procedures and help clarify types of financial aid, eligibility, forms, and deadlines. For more than two centuries, Union College has been defining—and continually redefining—what it means to provide a liberal arts education. Since 1795, we've been challenging convention, blurring boundaries, and shaking up traditional thinking. Union students enrich their understanding of other countries and challenge themselves academically and personally while studying abroad. Students who participate in one or more of our programs quickly learn to thrive at the intersections—of diverse cultures and communities, of other languages and customs, of learning about others and themselves. Whether you are exploring the marine ecology of Australia, delving into art and history in France, or using the temples and tombs of ancient Greece as a living laboratory, you will likely find that overseas studies will be one of your most memorable college experiences. Choosing from among more than 160 courses, students analyze the American experience's diverse character, shaped by gender, race, class, geography, and ethnicity. These experiences are studied within a context of global economic, cultural, and political relations. Union provides grants, impressive labs, arts facilities, and personal guidance to help students launch their research dreams. During the annual Steinmetz Symposium, more than 400 students show off their work on subjects from coral reefs' fragility to French horror films. Research happens every day in our state-of-the-art laboratories, of course, but you're just as likely to be in the darkroom, the dance studio, a local stream, or a village across the globe. One of the significant advantages of attending a small liberal arts college is the personal attention you're able to receive. We're highly invested in your success, which is why we offer a wide variety of programs, support services, resources, and offices dedicated to ensuring that your academic experience is rewarding and meets your individual needs. Advising at Union engages students in an interactive process with a faculty member to help them make informed choices that maximize the benefits of a liberal arts education. It has a developmental component requiring different approaches with students at different times in their academic careers. We believe a good advisor helps teach students independence, and we want you to feel confident and excited about your academic decisions. Our Common Curriculum provides the breadth that defines a liberal arts education through requirements in linguistic and cultural competency, quantitative reasoning, and science and technology. The curriculum is designed to enable students to become lifelong learners by analyzing, synthesizing, integrating, and communicating effectively. The first-year preceptorial, or "precept," emphasizes critical reading and thinking skills, writing, speaking, and cultural diversity. All first-year students will take a precept course when they come to Union. There are several on-campus services, resources, and offices dedicated to ensuring you have what you need to feel successful and supported throughout your time at Union. To say that the Union has a strong culture of community outreach is an understatement. The College has been named to the President's Higher Education Community Service Honor Roll five times, a reflection of a deep commitment to fostering a strong relationship with the local community.

  10. One of the best parts of my job is talking about the great experience students have at Union College. Here are a few aspects of Union College. I welcome every opportunity to share. Union's student-led Campus Ministries programs give many opportunities for spiritual involvement and discipleship training. Union offers a traditional Seventh-day Adventist environment, providing a robust framework for making wise spiritual decisions. Strong ties with welcoming local churches mean over 90 percent of Union's students voluntarily join in worship weekly. At Union, students take ownership of their Christian experience. Adventist young people often leave the church after attending college, but that is not true at Union. Five years after graduation, most young alumni are very involved with their local church and continue their spiritual growth. Union's academic programs are strong, and since 2006, Union has been rated a top tier college in its regional category by U.S.News and World Report. With a student-to-teacher ratio of 13-to-1, students directly interact with professors who will challenge and mentor them, directly contributing to high standards of achievement seen in pass rates for professional exams and graduate school acceptance rates. The Union is in the top 3 percent of colleges and universities in the country for volunteerism and service-learning as designated by the 2007 President's Higher Education Community Service Honor Roll. Union sponsors Project Impact, the longest-running, highest participation collegiate community service day in the country. Union students serve locally by regularly feeding the homeless, operating a foot clinic, and bringing joy to long-term care residents. Globally, students share their time and skills through the Frontier Nursing class, international rescue, relief program, and student missionaries. Union College students choose from more than 50 majors and emphases in 27 disciplines or create a personalized degree. Union's graduates are sought by graduate and professional degree programs and employers in many fields, including health care, education, communication, social work, business, and international rescue and relief. We are committed to helping students face the challenges of a global marketplace where change is the only constant. Since student leadership is a defining value of the Union College experience, students here develop leadership abilities and learn to become change agents in a changing world. Union's capital city location offers a safe and enriching environment for study, work, and play. The 50-acre, tree-covered Campus in the College View community, is known for its friendly and safe atmosphere. When campus security is increasingly important, Union College feels fortunate to have a Lincoln police station located adjacent to Campus and a consistently positive safety record. Union recently installed a campus emergency alert system and has a crisis management plan in place. Our location close to downtown Lincoln means students have access to many off-campus jobs, internships, and cultural experiences within 10 minutes of Campus. A four-year degree at Union offers students the chance to grow in ways that cannot be matched by a community college or big public university. The friends made at Union, both students and professors, become essential to the fabric of our graduates' lives. Union's goal is for students to reach their full God-given potential—not just by teaching them in a classroom but also by empowering them to make wise choices that will benefit them for the rest of their lives. According to a national student survey, Union students rank above the national norm in their satisfaction with their experience at Union, and they rate Union in the top 10 percent for a supportive campus environment. This may explain why Union has the highest rate of alumni giving participation for colleges in its Carnegie Foundation classification. Alumni who graduated from Union typically have such a great experience they become an incredibly loyal and spirited group who give back to their school and still sing the school song. Union's location in the affordable Great Plains means tuition is in the lower third among Adventist colleges. Our high level of support from alumni and friends allows us to have the lowest tuition of any independent college in Nebraska. Union's new scholarships make a college education here an even better value actual out-of-pocket costs may be less for the same or better quality of other colleges. Union offers bachelor's (four-year) and associate's (two-year) degrees and a Master of Physician Assistant Studies. Students choose from a variety of academic routes with more than 50 majors, emphases and minors in 27 fields of study or fulfill individual educational goals with a personalized degree. For students living on or off-campus, participation in student activities is one of the many traits that sets the Union apart from other colleges. Whether a sporting event, banquet, games, or concert, there's something to do at Union every Saturday night, and many times in between. Surveys of Union students show twice the involvement in on-campus activities than the national average. The Student Life office is the epicenter of this vibrant campus life, an intersection between the college administration and student government. The responsibilities of Student Life include overseeing varsity athletics, providing student health and counseling services, managing the residence halls, sponsoring Associated Student Body activities, ensuring student safety, and formulating and enforcing institutional policies. One of the best parts of my job is talking about the great experience students have at Union College. Union University is an heir of three antebellum Tennessee schools-West Tennessee College and its predecessor, Jackson Male Academy, located at Jackson, and Union University, located at Murfreesboro. It is the inheritor of another college in 1927, Hall-Moody Junior College of Martin, Tennessee. Jackson Male Academy, founded in 1823 shortly after the opening of West Tennessee for settlement, was chartered by the legislature in 1825. West Tennessee College originated in the mid-1840s when supporters of the Academy secured a charter for a college and received an endowment from the state to come from the sale of public lands. Under its charter, the Jackson Male Academy's property rights and governance were vested in the trustees of the College. The College offered three degrees- bachelor of arts, bachelor of philosophy, and master of arts- and had four departments: Moral Philosophy, Languages, Mathematics, and Natural Philosophy and Chemistry. West Tennessee College continued until 1874 when at a time of depressed economic conditions, the trustees offered the College's buildings, grounds, and endowment to Tennessee Baptists in the hopes of attracting the southwestern regional University planned by the state's Baptist leaders. Meanwhile, after years of discussion and raising an endowment, the Baptists of Middle Tennessee (there were three separate conventions in Tennessee at that time) in 1848 established Union University in Murfreesboro, near the geographical center of the state. Union University came upon hard times when in 1859, its highly respected president, Joseph H. Eaton, died, and when during the Civil War, its campus was severely damaged. It reopened in 1868 only to close again in 1873, mainly because of its financial condition and cholera epidemic. Southwestern Baptist University, the immediate predecessor of the present Union University, originated because of a desire by Tennessee Baptists. They still had a separate convention for each state's three Grand Divisions for greater unification. Education became the core issue around which such unification was promoted. Committees of the three conventions met jointly in Humboldt in 1873 and issued a resolution supporting establishing a first-class regional university. An Educational Convention met in Murfreesboro in 1874, at which time a committee was appointed to select a location for the proposed University. The committee recommended accepting the offer made by the citizens of Jackson to assume ownership of West Tennessee College.

  16. Fork Union Military Academy is one of the leading US college preparatory military boarding schools for boys in grades 7-12 and postgraduate located in Fork Union, Virginia, right in the heart of central Virginia. We offer high-quality academics and athletics within a structure built around character development, self-discipline, responsibility, leadership development, and Christian values. The campus of Fork Union Military Academy provides a sanctuary from so many of the stresses and pressures that confront young men today. Each year, on average, we welcome young men from all around the USA and world...from about 35 states and approximately ten or more countries. We offer a diverse and welcoming environment. Located on 1,000 acres in rural central Virginia, the Academy is a beautiful and peaceful place, far from the city's noise and commotion, the aimless adolescent wandering of the suburban shopping malls, and the powerful peer pressures of popular culture. Most young men come to Fork Union Military Academy in search of a place where they can perform up to their full potential— a place where they can excel in both the classroom and the athletic field. These students find what young men have been seeking here since 1898: a challenging educational experience in a safe, structured environment where distractions are few and where every aspect of student life encourages academic achievement and personal growth. Our unique curriculum schedule, known as the One Subject Plan, has been in use for many decades. In addition to the course material, thousands of young men have experienced the absolute value of mastering the subject material they set out to learn. Studying one subject at a time is a unique experience intended to sharpen a young man's focus and improve his ability to concentrate. This is why you can count on our college acceptance rate, hitting 100% every year. Fork Union Military Academy was founded in 1898 by Dr. William Hatcher, a prominent Baptist minister. Christian values and biblical principles continue to undergird the entire program of Fork Union Military Academy. Our cadets are expected to conduct themselves with kindness and respect. This expectation is reinforced and clarified in the chapel services and student assemblies held during the week and Sunday mornings. Our goal is to provide young men a framework within which they may apply themselves to achieving their academic potential while growing as men of character and integrity. While the Academy is proud of our affiliation with the Baptist General Association of Virginia, our student body reflects the broad diversity of religious belief in our world. About 20% of our cadets are Baptist, another 20% are Catholic, approximately 20% are of another Christian denomination, nearly 20% are of another religious faith such as Jewish, Buddhist, or Muslim, and about 20% do not specify any religious affiliation. The goal of the military system at Fork Union Military Academy is not to turn young men into soldiers. Indeed, we have no affiliation with any branch of the armed forces. Instead, our goal is to use the best aspects of the military system to teach young men the value of being responsible for their actions, doing their work that needs to be done, and working with others toward a common purpose. We have identified a set of broadly agreed upon positive military courtesies, such as... Respect for authority Punctuality Self-discipline Accountability Personal and corporate hygiene We have superimposed these values on our living and learning environment—in the classroom, the locker room, the dining room, and the dorm room. At Fork Union Military Academy, our cadets are expected to tuck in their shirts, say "Yes, sir" and "No, ma'am," to stand when a lady enters and opens doors for others. Our cadets learn to look at others in the eye, address others with respect, and speak confidently. Our cadets are taught to "sweep in the corners"—that is, they are expected to pay attention to detail, be accountable for their actions, and set high standards for themselves and others. Our structure and discipline environment helps limit distractions and encourage students to focus on achievement in academics, athletics, and personal growth.
  17. Guided by the school's mission, Kimball Union Academy prepares students for tomorrow's world's challenges by inspiring academic mastery, creativity, responsibility, and leadership. Set in the historic village of Meriden, New Hampshire, students at KUA are immersed in a breadth of educational opportunities that also allow for a deeper dive into areas of interest. Students here are confident, life-long learners who care about one another. Education begins, evolves, and endures through positive relationships that build connections to self and others, to ideas and principles, and the work at hand. These relationships are in abundant evidence in the diverse faces and spaces of Kimball Union, where mission and goals are intentionally woven deeply into the learning community's fabric. When students and faculty are in mindful interplay to develop cognitive, behavioral, and affective aspects, active learning through individual and community expression and performance is everywhere. In every area of Kimball Union, we work actively with students to equip them with 21st-century skills. Individual growth, engagement, and the development of interdisciplinary academic tools, social skills, and habits define our program. For most students, this leads to the discovery of passions in new areas of study. We provide a breadth of educational opportunities and allow for a deeper dive into the knowledge and mastery that enables each student to contribute to their chosen field. Our students are confident, life-long learners who are successful communicators and leaders. In small classroom settings, supported and challenged in positive ways by peers, and encouraged by talented faculty members, KUA ensures that every student will develop a set of essential skills through the breadth of programs offered. Additional mastery and depth of knowledge can be attained by participation in Signature and Scholar Programs, which promote leadership and add academic rigor to the student experience. At KUA, learning happens everywhere, all the time, which means it does not stop when classes are over. Our program is designed to enable each student to achieve academic success through personal growth. Students encounter learning and growth in the classroom, on the sports field, in the theater, in the dorms—everywhere on campus. Student life is about engaging with the curriculum to allow connections between the classroom and the community. Student life is also about making connections that will last a lifetime. Another critical component of education is learning to meet challenges with energy, critical analysis, and the expectation that experience grants wisdom. At KUA, this begins with SMART Boards in every classroom, the KUA Laptop Requirement to ensure that every student is equipped with the appropriate device and support for their academic computing needs, and the adoption of digital textbooks across a number of our course offerings, which allows us to further embrace digital content and enhancements in and out of the classroom. Utilizing cutting-edge technology gives faculty and students the freedom to be creative and move beyond the traditional walls and constraints of "old school" education. We strive to make our classrooms more interactive and empower students to play an active role in their education. We see the impact of this every day—whether it is guiding students as they use Twitter to follow up-to-the-minute, first-person accounts of a revolution unfolding half a world away or watching them win the Massachusetts FIRST Tech Challenge Championships as part of our STEM (science, technology, engineering, and mathematics) Program. Kimball Union Academy's classrooms are all equipped with SMART Boards and outstanding audio/visual capabilities. These technologies are integrated into the curriculum in various ways to emphasize 21st Century skills and learning outcomes. Whether through collaborative problem-solving, global interconnectivity, access to databases, or refining information literacy, our objective is to advance learning with these technological tools.

View full university
