About Me

  1. We are a small school which aims to provide a family atmosphere where pupils and families feel supported this enables us to take a holistic approach to the child’s learning journey. We work as part of a team, to offer a nurturing environment where pupils can develop to their full potential. This is facilitated by working closely with families and other agencies to provide a holistic learning experience for our pupils. We are all responsible for contributing to our learning community. At Phoenix Arch we value and respect children as individuals, we adopt a nurturing caring, and united approach to support all children to succeed and achieve in their learning. We encourage children to form positive relationships, know what their rights are, and take responsibility for their role within the school and the wider community. Our vision is one of an environment encompassing a creative exciting and inspirational learning community. The curriculum at Phoenix Arch has been developed to allow teachers to be creative and make the learning journey of pupils stimulating and exciting. There is a two-year rolling plan to ensure the curriculum remains interesting and challenging. It is designed to promote effective planning with careful sequencing of content which builds on previous knowledge, learning, and achievement. It can be adapted to suit the different learning styles of pupils thereby providing personalized learning opportunities. The school understands that unstructured playtimes can often be the most challenging for pupils. We, therefore, use this time as structured learning time which is planned and assessed as part of the child’s learning journey. Play is highly supervised by staff and pupils are encouraged to join a range of activities. Pupils are encouraged to make choices and develop friendships and support each other across the school. Every week Key Stage 2 pupils take part in Enrichment activities. These sessions are planned for and develop cross-curricular links involving life skills. Pupils are mixed into social family groups. This enables pupils to develop links across the school and work with different staff and pupils developing relationships outside of their class environment. Recent activities have included designing skateboards. This involved researching and costing equipment. Pupils put forward a case to justify the cost and went on the design and build their skateboards. This was teamed with a project on graffiti which had a strong PSHE element as well as Art. Other activities have included multicultural cooking involving costing, shopping, budgeting, and healthy eating. This is a very valuable approach to developing our whole school approach to supporting each other to work collaboratively in a family-like atmosphere. Our new-build was completed on time in February 2015. Since then it has developed to provide creative learning spaces including therapy rooms. It now provides additional facilities for our pupils and families. Speech and Language Therapy (SALT) at our school aims to provide full speech and language assessment, diagnosis (where appropriate), and intervention strategies for children with communication difficulties as an integral part of their educational life. The school is housed in a building which is refurbished accommodation and a substantial new build which is expected to complete the school’s facilities. This project has been planned for some time and once finished will offer greater facilities for our pupils and families. The new area will provide much-needed therapy rooms, an art room, and a sensory room. We will also have a music room which will double up as our community room. The whole school curriculum takes into account the specific learning difficulties of the pupils and their learning styles and encompasses communication the core and foundation subjects of the National Curriculum Religious Education Personal, Social and Health Education and Citizenship. Signing, symbols, pictures/photographs, speech, and gestures are all used to develop each pupil’s communication skills.

By our positive example, we discourage unkind behavior in others. The academic doors opened in the fall of 2009 for students. We now enroll students in grades pre-k to twelve. While academics are a major focus, academic pursuits are balanced with the many other facets of child development. The curriculum of PIS is designed to motivate and challenge the students at each level to reach their most effective performance and build their cognitive skills. This curriculum is designed to meet the international as well as the Lebanese standards, with emphasis on college preparation. The advanced programs are supplied with resources to provide individualized attention and work through areas of weakness. Each teacher is committed to helping children develop the cognitive processes and skills needed. PIS educational approach is based on 'Active Learning' where children construct their knowledge through: Interacting with their environment. Experimenting. Our curriculum empowers our students to be effective citizens as they meet the challenges in an increasingly complex world. The Phoenix International School community (families, staff, and trustees) is committed to an educational environment that reflects these values. Cycle three program in Phoenix International School is a three-year cycle covering grades 7 to 9. It offers two different programs: The Lebanese program, which prepares students for the official Lebanese Brevet examination, and the High School program which prepares the students for the High School diploma or the International Baccalaureate. The two programs require that the following subjects be taught (different weight is given to different subjects depending on the program followed): English, French, Arabic, Mathematics, Sciences, Social Studies and Civics, Physical Education, Art, Music, Information Technology, and Community Service. These programs require the teaching of Arabic, English, French, Math, Science, Social Studies, Physical Education, Art, Information Technology (IT), and Music. The Lebanese Program is available to everyone, but only foreign students or Lebanese students who have lived abroad for at least three successive years or who carry a second nationality may join the High school program. These students must obtain an exemption from joining the Lebanese program from the Lebanese Ministry of Education where they will also obtain an equivalency indicating which grade they are qualified to join. The Lebanese Program consists of the English track. In the English Track, Math and Sciences are taught in English, civil education, geography, and history are taught in Arabic, and French is taught as a third or foreign language. Fully equipped science labs are available for students’ use as well as a design technology lab. Students will be assigned a student advisor who will be available to review their progress and address any concerns. Evaluations take place four times per year.

  6. As the Valley's only independent Pre-K through Grade 12 school, Phoenix Country Day School stands as a leader in education, both in Arizona and nationally. Our students and teachers strive for excellence— in the classroom and the community— while maintaining a healthy balance, grounded perspective, and sense of joy and curiosity in all that we do. Setting foot on the Phoenix Country Day School campus for the first time, one cannot help but notice the beauty of the well-manicured grounds against the breathtaking backdrop of the Praying Monk and Camelback Mountain. More than a half-century later, Phoenix Country Day School has evolved into a distinct educational excellence model, reflecting the unique culture of the region. Under the guidance of an expert faculty and staff, our students are compared to the best and brightest from any independent school in the country. And our alumni are making a difference—and making us proud—all over the world. PCDS prepares promising students to become responsible leaders and lifelong learners through an education that emphasizes intellectual engagement, independence, collaboration, creativity, and integrity. In keeping with its mission, Phoenix Country Day School expects its students to develop a coherent body of knowledge in the humanities, sciences, arts, and a comprehensive range of athletics skills. Pursuing quality and excellence is fundamental to everything we do at PCDS. Excellence in the classroom is reflected in exceptional academic offerings. Excellence in athletics is reflected in a program that allows students to participate in and thus benefits from team sports involvement. Excellence in the arts (visual studies, performing arts, music) is reflected in a program structure that allows time for studying and achievement in an area of interest. The balance of these areas and their lessons create broad-thinking, well-rounded, intelligent students of character. We introduce students to a curriculum that responds to the diverse and rapidly changing world where populations live longer, interrelating in new ways, and using newly created technologies and new communication methods. Students learn how to collaborate and how to be global thinkers. They develop excellent listening skills, maintain sensitivity to cultural backgrounds, and awareness of complicated and less-streamlined decision-making. Through the clear objective of quality and excellence, combined with the fundamentals of an extraordinary education, our students gain a foundation and appreciation for a lifetime of learning. The Phoenix Country Day School community strives to be one in which each individual is recognized and valued, each voice is heard, and each considered opinion can find a forum. However, no forms of hatred, prejudice, or bigotry are tolerated. We recognize the richness of the diverse threads that strengthen the fabric of the School. We endeavor to ensure that this fabric reflects the diversity of Arizona and our nation. We want every member of our School community to value diversity and respect one another. We strive to graduate students who love learning and pursue wisdom. Using their talents and skills for the greater good are adaptable, resilient, and responsible citizens in their local communities, nation, and the world and who engage in life with honor and integrity. These values and goals are essential components of a PCDS education: An Education for Life. As the Valley's only Pre-K through Grade 12 independent school since 1961, PCDS has always pushed itself to be at the forefront of student academic and personal growth. From our roots when May Sue Talley envisioned an "Exeter of the West," to our current standing as a national leader in a progressive, student-centered experience, Phoenix Country Day School has always exhibited the best in independent school education: simultaneously staying true to our roots and traditions, while being nimble and forward-thinking to prepare the world's leaders of tomorrow.

We offer a rich and stimulating curriculum, which is individually tailored reflecting good practice in an environment that supports the pupils’ learning. The school offers a range of sensory and therapeutic interventions and a multidisciplinary approach to pupil needs. The school has developed a holistic approach working in partnership with other agencies, parents, and families to have their needs met from one center. There is a strong focus on maintaining good relationships between home and school. We encourage respect for others, good manners, and tolerance. We believe it is important for pupils to achieve their full potential and importance is placed upon achievement at all levels. Pupil achievement is celebrated and positive rewards are used to promote and encourage good behavior and learning. There is a caring yet purposeful atmosphere within the school and there is a balance of focus between welfare and achievement for all. Learning in EY is structured to be active and experiential where children enjoy a sensory approach to the curriculum to engage in their learning. They are given every opportunity to achieve at their level of learning. The curriculum provides enriching and generalizing experiences so that all children have the opportunity to practice and consolidate skills for them to learn successfully. Teachers plan a variety of different trips outside school, including walks in the local area, visits to the shops, farm, zoo, and travel on public transport. Trips form a key part of the pupil's learning which supports understanding. Religious Education incorporates the Tower Hamlets agreed syllabus for Religious Education (2012-2017) and visits have taken place at the local mosque and St Pauls's cathedral. We are currently in the process of integrating Religious studies into the humanities subjects and we have a focus on value-driven approaches to RE with a focus on SMSC. Across the primary department visits to the local environment, shops and museums are encouraged to support curriculum areas. Key Stage 2 pupils have the opportunity to go swimming within the year as well as weekly yoga and horticulture sessions. The curriculum in Key Stage 4 aims to help students build on their learning from Key Stage 3 and further develop academically, personally and socially, in preparation for Key Stage 5 and adult life. We do this through a broad curriculum that provides a rich program within the school and the local community. It aims to develop our students’ social, work, and community-based skills. The curriculum also provides a medium for students to generalize their skills from the classroom into the workplace and community. The goal is for them to become active and as independent as possible within their local community and home life while becoming responsible citizens. Students are encouraged to apply their skills to real-life everyday situations thus enabling them to access their community as fully as possible while making sure they are safe, happy, and confident in meeting life’s challenges. The curriculum is personalized with a focus on building on each individual’s strengths and interests. It is designed to develop their skills, attitudes, and confidence that will support progression to their chosen destination. Achievements are recognized and valued through termly assessments and nationally recognized qualifications. We use Person Centred Planning to ensure all students & families contribute to the development of an Educational Health and Care Plan (EHCP). These are reviewed annually and are referred to and informed by the person-centered Annual Review. We work with the Career Service, Community Learning Disability Team (CLDS), local colleges, and Social Care providers to plan for successful student transition at post 19.

  11. View full school

The School makes every attempt to inform them of the School's purposes and goals and expects their strong support in the pursuit of these aims. Phoenix International School's vision is to promote the strength of character through the development of personal responsibility, integrity, and the ability to learn and grow in a culturally diverse and technologically advanced society. Phoenix International School will value its students for their potential, as well as their achievement, and will strive always for their balanced growth-intellectual, physical, social, and ethical. Phoenix International School recognizes that the primary responsibility for inspiring and strengthening values resides with parents. Nevertheless, the school can and should play an important character education role as well, and has established four core values that form the basis for Phoenix International School's efforts to increase its emphasis on character development. The primary goals of Phoenix International School are intellectual endeavor and achievement. The School also believes that a well-rounded education includes experiences in the arts, athletics, and a variety of extra-curricular activities. Phoenix International School further believes that every student is and will continue to be part of a community and, therefore, seeks to strengthen his or her moral responsibility and service to it. To that end, the school actively promotes honesty, respect, responsibility, and kindness. Our Core Values are: Honesty. Responsibility. Respect. Kindness.
