About Me

  1. Mountain District Christian School (MDCS) is a co-educational Prep to Year 12 Christian school situated in picturesque bushland near Monbulk in the Dandenong Ranges. With a current enrolment of fewer than 300 students, many families appreciate the opportunities this provides for the nurture and development of individual students’ gifts and interests. Children are educated from a Biblical perspective, with the desire to learn about God’s world, their place in it, and how they can respond through service in their daily lives. It is a privilege to serve the MDCS community of families, students and staff, first as Deputy Principal and VCE Coordinator since the beginning of 2012, and now as Principal. As a school, we have much to celebrate and thank God for. Our families often comment on how much they love the beautiful surroundings in which their children learn and how teachers regard the well-being of their ‘whole’ child, not just their academic learning. I am also delighted to hear how much they as parents feel welcome and encouraged to be involved. Our parents are grateful to have found a place where their children will be taught from a Christian perspective that seeks to mirror the Biblical truths and values modeled to their children at home. We recognize and understand the responsibility entrusted to us by families as we partner with parents in the nurturing and education of their children. As a whole staff team, we take this very seriously. Suppose you are exploring our website with a view to enrolment. In that case, I encourage you to contact us to arrange a personal tour of the school grounds and if you know of families who already belong to our community, chat with them about their MDCS experiences. Whether you are already involved at MDCS or interested in learning more about us, I hope you find our website informative, helpful, and engaging. I look forward to meeting with you and sharing what it means to be part of the MDCS community. It is the vision of the MDCS Association to provide by God’s grace a flourishing Prep to Year 12 school community where Christ-centered education is paramount. The MDCS Association serves the families and the Christian Community of our district who desire a Christ-centered education. We do this by providing quality biblically-directed teaching and learning in a nurturing environment. Such education seeks to develop the God-given gifts of each child and together, with parents and the church, equip the child for a life of service in God’s world. During the 1970s, a dedicated and passionate group of parents worked tirelessly to ensure that Christ-centered education was available to this district’s families. Their dream was realized in 1979 when classes first commenced at MDCS. Our story continues to grow as we partner with parents and the church to equip children for a life of service in God’s world. 3. At Indian Mountain School, you will find a community joyfully engaged in learning and teaching. Our faculty work as teachers, coaches, advisors, dorm parents, and mentors. We fully understand the charge to educate the whole child. These excellent teachers delight in developing their students' curiosity and creativity, encouraging them to experiment and innovate. Our teachers also recognize the developmental value of play. From its founding in 1922, Indian Mountain School (IMS) has encouraged its students to live a life through service. Our community values of honesty, compassion, and respect inform our teaching and learning goals. Our boarding program enriches both residential and day students' lives with family-style meals, community celebrations, and morning meetings, creating a warm and supportive school culture. Besides providing an excellent foundation for high school coursework, IMS also teaches students the skills necessary to live and work with others. We believe in the importance of developing empathy to communicate and collaborate in an increasingly diverse and connected world. At IMS, students find their voice, develop leadership skills, celebrate diversity, and discover their strengths and talents. We use technology in the classroom to engage actively with the world and our peers. Students also benefit from experiencing our beautiful natural environment. From our school's earliest days, outdoor experiences have been an integral part of student life. Our Adventure Education program teaches students how to appreciate nature and be good stewards of our environment. Indian Mountain School inspires each member of our community the courage to climb, the joy to create, the passion for learning, and the spirit to contribute in-kind and meaningful ways. Our vision is of a vibrant, joyful community of learners where every child is known, supported, and inspired. IMS will provide a distinctive and transformational learning experience, using our extraordinary campus to connect our curriculum to the world around us. 4. For over 40 years, Green Mountain Valley School has been dedicated to supporting one very clear mission: fostering a life-long love of learning, sport, and adventure within competitive skiers. Our goal has always been to create an environment where students are encouraged to become well-rounded scholars and citizens. Founded in 1973, GMVS stands apart as a unique educational institution. GMVS is not just a school or a ski club, it’s a lifestyle. A lifestyle that celebrates the dual pursuit of rigorous academics and athletics all while cultivating a life-long love of learning, an adventurous spirit, grit, and determination – character traits that will prepare graduates to confidently and wisely impact the world. At Green Mountain Valley School, our goals go beyond providing exceptional training in alpine and Nordic ski racing with our strong college preparatory academic program. We put ski racing and studies into the broader perspective of competition and adventure. We know that the patterns of accomplishment carry over into every aspect of a student-athlete's life, especially after graduation. Living and learning at GMVS is about far more than just skiing or school. It’s about being a passionate and lifelong athlete. It’s about becoming intellectually challenged and eternally curious, being simultaneously independent and community-minded, persevering and doing far more than you think you can achieve. It’s a place, despite our focus on skiing, where you do not have to sacrifice your dreams of academic greatness, your passion for other sports, or your commitment to the arts. Here you can truly be “all you can be.” Our results and facilities are the visible embodiment of the GMVS mission and success. Yet, what might be a bit less visible are the relationships embedded in the fabric of our school that support these endeavors. GMVS alumni have gone on to become World Cup athletes and Olympians, to thrive at some of the country’s most selective colleges and universities, and to build careers as actors, CEOs, photographers, health care professionals, and entrepreneurs. Most importantly, our alumni continue to cite the values instilled in them here at GMVS as catalysts for their successes. Our goal as a ski academy is to recognize that one can compete at the highest level athletically and simultaneously pursue academic excellence. While the athletic program trains students for world-class competition, the teaching staff prepares students for a future beyond skiing. Our program encourages students to explore their interests in many areas. In addition to a full college preparatory curriculum in English, history and social sciences, foreign languages, math, and science, GMVS offers extracurricular opportunities in theater, music, and the visual arts. Students individually plan their academic schedules in consultation with the Director of Academics, their coach, and the College Placement Counselor. Courses and course load are selected based on academic preparedness, ability, and the demands of each student’s travel schedule, not necessarily by age or grade levels. GMVS continues to offer the traditional core courses as well as a variety of electives, opportunities for honors, and advanced work. Students are required to pass basic skills courses before moving on to advanced courses. Small classes encourage preparation, involvement, and performance. Course loads are demanding, and teachers maintain high standards so that students stretch the limits of their potential. At the same time, our 5:1 student to teacher ratio enables staff to adjust those standards to individual students, taking into consideration learning style, college goals, and racing schedule. Teachers mentor students to ensure mastery of class material and they teach students how to balance the demands on their time. Teachers work closely with each other as well, developing interdisciplinary projects that reinforce subject material. Our Learning Support Skills accelerate student learning by providing additional customized support beyond what the classroom teachers and advisors offer. The programs recognize students’ talents while helping them acquire skills and strategies to become independent lifelong learners. These individualized programs are designed to enhance a student’s reading, writing, organization, time management, and study skills allowing the student to effectively demonstrate understanding at GMVS and in college.
  5. CRMS is an ideal learning environment for high school students because of its intentional, research-based programming, deliberate size, and unrivaled geographic location. The CRMS experience is designed to address a transformative time in a young adult's life. On this doorstep to adulthood, we understand that students need to feel connected, seen, and heard to fulfill their potential and move into their next phase of life with confidence, competence, and an orientation toward learning and engagement. Connected: Through an integrated curriculum that weaves academics, outdoor adventure, service, and the arts, Colorado Rocky Mountain School students are connected, their teachers, their community, and the larger world. These connections allow students to make authentic and meaningful contributions to their school community, expand their potential, take appropriate risks in a supportive environment, and take their learning to an exceptional level. Seen: We are deliberately sized so that every student has our full attention. Students at Colorado Rocky Mountain School are known as individuals and celebrated in this community. Every student has the opportunity to be applauded, no matter their strength - academics, athletics, community service, artistic abilities, or for their unique characteristics. Heard: Students at Colorado Rocky Mountain School have a voice and are encouraged to develop it. They lead and contribute to the conversations, shape school policy. Their involvement is valued throughout the program, and as a result, they are active participants in their own educational experience. When students are connected, seen, and heard, and are guided through this transformation with attentive adult mentors, they are better prepared to take on the greater independence they naturally seek. At Colorado Rocky Mountain School, all our faculty and staff view it as a privilege to mentor students into their adult roles and prepare them for the academic challenges of college and life beyond. We understand this is our responsibility to fulfill with your student. Selecting a high school for your child is an incredibly important decision. Graduates of Colorado Rocky Mountain School are intellectually curious, adventurous, creative, resilient, kind, and confident young adults.
  6. At Cardigan Mountain School, our forward-thinking program is informed by the School’s rich history and traditions. We embrace the vision of our founders, Harold P. Hinman, a Dartmouth College graduate, and William R. Brewster, headmaster of Kimball Union Academy: they imagined a School that offered a beautiful natural setting and balanced instruction, helping boys build a foundation for future success. In 1945, these men joined with Dartmouth president E. M. Hopkins to obtain our School’s lakefront home, nestled below Mt. Cardigan’s peak. Cardigan has integrated thoughtfully into this campus, expanding from an initial graduating class of seven boys, merging with the Clark School in 1954, and settling intentionally into our current enrollment of just over 200 boys in grades six through nine. Cardigan Mountain School is an independent boarding and day school for boys in 6th, 7th, 8th, and 9th grade in Canaan, New Hampshire. We understand and appreciate boys at this great age and stage of development. We have created an environment designed to nurture their academic achievement and their physical, social, ethical, and personal growth. Everything here—from teaching and learning to arts, sports, and fun—is geared toward helping boys reach their potential. We offer boys just the right amounts of structure and independence, challenge and support, focus on individual growth, and a healthy, positive sense of community. This time-tested, comprehensive approach to the education of boys is what we call the Cardigan Way. Cardigan Mountain School offers a close-knit community that prepares middle school boys—in mind, body, and spirit—for responsible and meaningful lives in a global society. To achieve our mission, we reward effort and accomplishment, helping each boy realize his academic, physical, and personal potential by integrating the following Core Values in all aspects of daily life.
  7. Burke Mountain Academy provides passionate ski racers the opportunity to pursue their limitless academic and athletic potential in a community based on trust. BMA embraces an ethos in which hard work is held in the highest esteem, and risking failure and learning from success provides exceptional preparation for life beyond Burke. Founded when highly motivated young ski racers pleaded with their coach to provide an opportunity to pursue their passion for skiing while providing necessary academic support, BMA's purpose remains the same to this day: creating a unique environment that delivers an indelible experience for student-athletes who wish to dedicate themselves to being the best they can be, to carry their dedication to alpine or Nordic ski racing over into the classroom, and to do so with a commitment to character and values. Members of the BMA community are called Burkes. We invite you to open our school's virtual doors to look at our student-athlete and alumni achievements, our program offerings, and the distinct traditions and principles that set us apart from other ski academies. In 1970, a young ski racer named Martha Coughlin approached coach Warren Witherell seeking year-round training to help her achieve her dream of being named to the U.S. Ski Team. Witherell quickly agreed, and Burke Mountain Academy was born. The school was the first ski academy of its kind in the United States and established the model by which all others would follow. More than 40 years later, BMA remains true to the ethos established at its inception. Enrolling no more than 70 students annually, the Burke philosophy emphasizes developing the whole individual — as a student, an athlete, and a person of character. BMA believes this approach is the cornerstone to success both at Burke and in life beyond high school and ski racing.
  8. The Westminster School is a K-12 classical Christian school and is a ministry of Oak Mountain Presbyterian Church (PCA). Founded in 1999 as Oak Mountain Classical School, the school has grown to an enrollment of more than 500 students. The first graduating class matriculated in 2006. Westminster's leadership is committed to a thoroughly Christian approach that includes shepherding the heart, training the mind, and nurturing the soul. Whether it be through the curriculum, on the playground, or in day-to-day relationships, we want the gospel of Christ to be preeminent in our community. Westminster is equally committed to academic quality. We like to say it like this: discipleship and scholarship without one compromising the other. While the curriculum and pace are challenging, we are not a school targeting the academically elite. Mortimer Adler, the American philosopher, educator, and author, said the best education for the best is the best education for all. We are convinced a student of average aptitude who is diligent and focused can complete our academic program. Nevertheless, we understand that an excellent education, just as an excellent sports program, assumes a healthy measure of rigor and commitment. We hold the conviction that learning does not only involve hard work but also rewarding work. We are well aware that rigor and commitment are not very popular words in modern culture. We know there is a general fear of pushing students or expecting too much of them. However, at Westminster, we do not fear calling students to a higher standard. First, because all children are "fearfully and wonderfully made" in God's image, we believe, as Richard Weaver argued, that "while they are prone to err they are capable of glory." Second, we believe in grace. Thus, every time we push students to greater heights, we point them to Christ. Students do not need to run from the expectation to do what is extraordinary. Nor do we need to fear they might crumble beneath the weight of higher expectations. Because in the end, they will not be judged by their accomplishments but by their longing and their hope for the accomplishments of Christ. Our Values: Westminster believes. We are biblically driven, gospel-centered, grace saturated, and theologically reformed. Westminster helps. We endeavor to help Christian parents fulfill their God-ordained obligation to educate their children and nurture them to full maturity in the gospel. Westminster connects. We foster relationships that reflect a united body of Christ as we celebrate diverse gifts, challenges, and victories together. Westminster loves. We strive to demonstrate Christ's love for our students by the way we teach, serve, and live from a whole heart. Westminster teaches. We embrace the classical liberal arts concepts of grammar, logic, and rhetoric to cultivate wisdom, virtue, and eloquence in our students. Westminster teaches. We embrace the classical liberal arts concepts of grammar, logic, and rhetoric to cultivate wisdom, virtue, and eloquence in our students. Westminster builds. We seek the Kingdom of God's progress in this world through the pursuit of beauty in all things with a spirit of truth and love. Our goal is to engage the whole person to equip a child with wisdom and eloquence to be an effective leader and life-long learner. We hold the conviction that both of these qualities are an integral part of our fundamental role as human beings made in the image of God. View full school
  9. "DEVELOP CHARACTER SEEK KNOWLEDGE BUILD COMMUNITY". To achieve this goal, the faculty at VMS is singularly focused on one thing--your child. They bring their passions into the classroom and develop deep, caring relationships that inspire a genuine love of learning. Our teachers pay close attention to each individual's social, emotional, and academic needs, adapting curricula and lessons that fuel the fire more than fill the bucket. Put, and the right school knows your child by name; an outstanding school knows your child by heart. VMS is the only independent K-12 school in Eagle and Summit Counties, and we embrace the freedom this provides. Our rigorous, globally-inspired college preparatory curriculum readies students for challenges both in and out of the classroom. The experience is enriched by athletics, independent projects, service learning, in-depth interterm classes, winter hut trips, outdoor education, and Ski Fridays. We believe teachable moments are everywhere, and we are bound neither by belief nor government mandate to teach in only one way. One size does not fit all; one size fits one. Our community works and plays together, sharing a love for the active mountain lifestyle that defines us, and that has converted countless visitors into lifelong residents. Our location is truly unique, enabling us to provide an education that cannot be found anywhere else in the world. Outside our front door lies the world-famous Vail ski resort. Just steps from our back door are trails that lead to majestic 13,000-foot peaks, mountain meadows filled with wildflowers, pristine waterfalls, and diverse ecosystems. Interstate 70 provides quick access to Denver and Boulder's learning opportunities and the sublime desert playgrounds and rivers to the west. Matching our natural setting's beauty and elegance, our school community is housed in a state-of-the-art facility with a design inspired as much by our beliefs about how learning best occurs in a K-12 environment as by aesthetic considerations. Lower, middle and upper school classrooms are mixed throughout with abundant open common spaces to encourage cross-age interaction and give students room to move. Operating on the principle that emotional stability is a requisite for academic success, students start each day at VMS with Homebase, a unique advisory forum designed to build community, strengthen character, and encourage ethical decision making. In partnership with parents, teachers help students confront problems, and set positive, proactive examples, challenging students to be their best in the classroom, on the playing field, online, and outside the school. We pride ourselves on celebrating individual achievements and supporting each other's struggles. The result is a caring community of engaged learners that supports the greatness in one through the strength of many. Service to others is at the core of the VMS mission and one of the most important lessons we teach. Service is woven throughout our curriculum, with projects ranging from a second-grade read-a-ton that raised money for a school in Uganda to volunteering with local non-profits such as Habitat for Humanity. Other longstanding service traditions include serving at a Denver soup kitchen feeding the homeless and spending two days during the ninth grade Costa Rica trip, helping improve conditions for residents of an extremely impoverished neighborhood in the nation's capital. Many VMS students pursue interests outside of school that demands significant commitments of both time and energy. VMS faculty willingly work with students, parents, and coaches to ensure that ski racers, athletes, musicians, and artists can compete, train, and perform without compromising academics. These students are expected to be scholars and athletes or artists, and we are committed to supporting the highest level of achievement in and out of the classroom. Students and parents keep up with schoolwork and grades via an online course management system and work with two full-time support staff, one of whom is a former ski racer. As a formal partner of Ski and Snowboard Club Vail, VMS is staffed, prepared, and accustomed to ensuring the academic success of snowsport athletes and helping their parents with the logistics of competing while keeping abreast of schoolwork. VMS's dedicated liaisons can assist with communication as much as with tutoring and help students compete or perform internationally, stay on top of academic demands, and make friends at the same time. Few schools offer this level of attentive, proactive support. View full school

Steele founded the Rocky Mountain School of Art in the foothills of Colorado. Already a well-known illustrator and educator himself, Phil wanted to develop an art training program based on the traditional academic method of drawing and painting that dates back to the Renaissance. His mission was to make RMCAD a 'community of creatives' that would instill in all students a passion for creativity, innovation, and a desire for lifelong learning—both in the fine arts and applied arts. He sought to nurture each student's talents, integrate critical thinking and analysis into their skills, and contribute socially responsible ways to the local, global, and professional communities.

It was opened in 1963 and replaced the old St. Matthew's Church School. The school, by tradition, serves a very large catchment area and has a planned admission limit of 58 pupils. The school's Admission Policy outlines clearly the selection criteria for the school and the Governing Body will endeavor to ensure that the policy statement is followed precisely. Nursery admission is determined by L.A. officers following receipt of online applications. Parents are usually informed if their application has been successful by the beginning of the Summer Term - (April/May). Parents have no right of appeal under the School Standards and Framework Act 1998. The Admissions Criteria is laid out in the Flintshire Schools Admission Arrangements document. The school can, however, accept pupils from anywhere within the town from Nursery Age - upwards (to Y6) if the number of pupils in a respective year group is below the Standard Number for the school (i.e. 58). This prospectus is designed to provide you with all the relevant information about Mountain Lane School and it should also act as a guide for all parents who might consider sending their children here. Some information will change annually, however, and parents are always updated on relevant matters. Parents are most welcome to visit the school at any time - although it might be necessary to make an appointment if serious issues are to be discussed. Parents are encouraged to participate fully in the life of the school and opportunities are offered to all parents to work in school to support the teaching staff and auxiliary workers. Meetings are held regularly to inform parents of new educational initiatives and to share information that will help the children develop and grow through our school and maximize their potential during their time with us. The school was last inspected in March 2011. A copy of the report can be obtained from the school on request or is available for download from the Estyn and school websites.
  14. Green Mountain College prepares students for fulfilling lives by taking the goal of creating just and sustainable societies as the unifying theme for its interdisciplinary graduate and undergraduate liberal arts education. The College fosters environmental and personal responsibility, civic engagement, entrepreneurial spirit, and global understanding. At Green Mountain College, we blend the best of classroom theory with practical, hands-on experience. The result is a deeper kind of learning that gives you a leg up in the working world. Students and faculty work together on research projects with real outcomes, like our design/build class, which built a solar garage that charges an electric tractor for use on the farm. Every student gets to vote on the next sustainability ideas to be implemented at the College. You will have opportunities for fieldwork at our student-run farm great internship sites like Greenpeace, Killington Ski Resort, or the Office of Senator Bernie Sanders. It is your world—and it is “the real world,” long before you graduate. With a curriculum built on a framework of social, economic, and environmental sustainability, you will learn the practical skills you need for the workplace and how to live a purposeful life. Ninety-five percent of graduates say they are doing work that they find meaningful. They are prepared for careers in today’s fastest-growing fields, including the green jobs sector. Our graduates do what they love, and the rewards follow. Here, the classroom is more than a place to sit and take notes. It is where you connect, engage, and collaborate with the world’s foremost sustainability experts—your professors. Beyond the classroom, you can expect to work and learn one on one with faculty. They get to know you here, and many become mentors for life. As you hone into your major and prepare for your future career, our Career, Advising, and Teaching (CAT) Center will support you with internships, resume building support, and practice with interviews. To understand who we are — a community working to bring positive change to the world — helps to know who we once were, and how we began, where this tree grew roots. And that place is Vermont – home to a fierce streak of independence, respect for difference, and connection to the natural, intellectual, and spiritual world. Dig under the soil, and you discover our roots intertwined with the stories of those who made their mark on history, like Horace Greeley, who founded the New York Herald Tribune, and who learned the printing trade at a newspaper in East Poultney. The tavern where he lived, the school where he gave his first speech — they still stand here today. As a national reformer, freethinker, and activist, his legacy dovetails with our school's can-do spirit and Vermont. Or John Wesley, the founder of Methodism, whose forward-thinking belief inaccessible education and women’s empowerment, echoes our global responsibility and public service mission. With historical ties to the United Methodist Church, Green Mountain College promotes respect for lifelong learning, human spirituality, gender equality, and our planet. We teach students that history is made by those who lead, like Poultney's settlers, who built one of Vermont’s first libraries. So we transform this inspiration into action, become the first EPA Energy Star campus in the nation, and first reach climate neutrality through clean energy, efficiency, and carbon offsets because this is our history, our roots, your future. Green Mountain College is a place where every academic field is integrated with a focus on sustainability. Here, students lead, teachers guide, and hands-on learning comes to life. Regardless of major, you and your peers complete our Environmental Liberal Arts sequence. This cross-disciplinary program prepares you for a career in today’s fastest-growing fields, including the green jobs sector. You can select from 23 academic majors and 36 minors, or craft your self-designed major through our Progressive Program. Green Mountain College is a small environmental liberal arts college located in Vermont’s beautiful Lakes Region and less than 40 minutes from Vermont’s premier ski resort, Killington Mountain. The campus sits at the intersection of College Street and Main Street in Poultney. A diverse and committed board of trustees with national and regional perspectives sets the overall strategic direction. It ensures the financial and organizational success of the College in achieving its mission. Faculty, staff, and students share in the day-to-day governance of the College. Openness and transparency are essential factors in the goal of creating an atmosphere of respect and equality. The Student Senate, which meets weekly in an open-forum setting, has substantial authority to oversee its internal operations and regularly collaborates with the administration, Staff Assembly, and Faculty Council. Students are often involved in search and other committees. The Faculty Council meets monthly in advance of campus faculty meetings, and faculty forums on research in progress and issues related to teaching are held regularly. The Staff Assembly likewise holds monthly meetings and collaborates with sister organizations. The tradition of holding open meetings for all GMC community members, called “community conversations,” happens at least once a semester. View full university
  15. Blue Mountain College was founded in 1873 by Brigadier General Mark Perrin Lowrey. The 140+-year-old co-educational institution has a stellar history of educating young women and men. The distinctive atmosphere of Blue Mountain College is attributable to a blending of several factors: the College's sense of its mission as a Christian and specifically a Baptist institution, the traditions created by a distinguished founding family and Christian educators, a careful balancing of liberal arts and vocational studies, a special kind of student life with a system of student government and honor uniquely available in a small Christian liberal arts college, and a family-like environment where students, faculty, and administrators genuinely believe in the worth of the individual. Blue Mountain College has over the years sought to prepare students for meaningful lives. Emphasis has been given to the development of strength of character and the ability to live creatively. Through small classes, a close faculty-student relationship, and a focus on the individual's importance, the College has endeavored to produce graduates who are well-prepared academically and spiritually to accept places of leadership in their professions, in their communities, and the work of the denomination. The Blue Mountain College Office of Financial aid serves students, families, and the community by providing financial aid information and resources to help students achieve their educational goals. We are committed to providing quality financial aid services to our constituents while maintaining equality and accountability in the administration of public, institutional, and private financial aid funds. Students may apply for Title IV federal student aid and a wide range of institutional and state aid. The Blue Mountain College Admissions and Academic Standards Committee admits students based on the applicant=s high school or College record and ACT or SAT scores. The Committee seeks to select students committed to scholarship, servant leadership, and service in church and community and who would contribute to the life of a Christian college community. As a private educational institution, however, Blue Mountain College reserves the right to deny admission to any applicant whose academic preparation, character, or personal conduct is determined to be inconsistent with the purposes and objectives of the College. The purpose of the admission process is to identify applicants who are likely to succeed academically at Blue Mountain College and, at the same time, contribute positively to the campus community. We want to tell you about Blue Mountain College (BMC) and how you can apply to our College. Regardless of age or nationality, the individual student is of utmost importance to BMC. Faculty and staff believe in each student's ability to participate constructively in his/her educational development. In a family-like atmosphere, classes of 10-20 are standard so that students can develop confidence that enables them to engage in campus life meaningfully. The purpose of Blue Mountain College is to prepare students for graduate school, the job market, and a more fulfilled life. Blue Mountain College was independently owned and administered until 1920 when control was turned over to the Mississippi Baptist Convention. From 1873 to 2005, the school operated as a traditional liberal arts college for women. In 1956 at the request of the Mississippi Baptist Convention, the College opened its doors to men preparing for church-related vocations. On October 4, 2005, the Board of Trustees of Blue Mountain College unanimously voted to make all programs offered by the College available to male students, thus making BMC fully co-educational. As a village preacher before the war, General Lowrey was a man of vision who saw the importance of providing a thorough education for women. The General felt that the South's recovery would be enhanced by the educating of its young women. He and his two oldest daughters, Modena and Margaret, comprised the first faculty at Blue Mountain Female Institute. Fifty students were enrolled for the first session. Miss Modena Lowrey Berry, affectionately known as "Mother Berry" in later years, served as "Lady Principal" and then as vice president from 1873 to 1934, a tenure perhaps unequaled by a woman as a prominent college official. She was the second woman in Mississippi's history to be named to the Mississippi Hall of Fame. Between 1873 and 1960, three generations of the Lowrey family, including the General's sons, Dr. W. T. Lowrey and Dr. B. G. Lowrey, and his grandson, Dr. Lawrence T. Lowrey, presided over the College. In 1960 Dr. Wilfred C. Tyler, a long-time professor of Bible at the school, accepted the presidency and served until he died in 1965. Dr. E. Harold Fisher served the College as president from July 1, 1965, until his retirement on June 30, 2001. Dr. Bettye Rogers Coward served the College as president from July 1, 2001, until her retirement on June 30, 2012. Dr. Janice I. Nicholson served as interim President during July 2012. Dr. Barbara Childers McMillin assumed responsibilities as the eighth president of Blue Mountain College on August 1, 2012. Blue Mountain College was independently owned and administered until 1920 when control was turned over to the Mississippi Baptist Convention. From 1873 to 2005, the school operated as a traditional liberal arts college for women. 16. Students and families choose a White Mountain education because we are a school of curious and engaged students and teachers. We are a school of inquiry and engagement. We know, both intuitively and from research, that to build engagement requires connections between teacher and student and student and material. Connections are best built when teachers and students determine questions and direction together, forging the student a sense of ownership and responsibility for one's learning. No matter what subject, no matter what level, we are profoundly and purposefully committed to those principles. The result? More in-depth understanding, more excellent retention of knowledge, and increased curiosity -- the foundation for lifelong learning and success. The White Mountain School motto is Levavi oculos in montes -- I have lifted my eyes to the hills. Our motto captures our place and the contagious spirit of the School. We seek to be uplifting and open to what lies ahead and all its possibilities and challenges. We are a school of inquiry and engagement. Grounded in our Episcopal heritage, we prepare and inspire students to lead lives of curiosity, courage, and compassion. As a college preparatory school, we follow a traditional liberal arts curriculum. We believe that a broad approach to human understanding of our world and its interconnections is essential to college and life success. Our classes focus more on discussion than a lecture because we know that students must explore their ideas to learn genuinely. Our curriculum offers a breadth and depth that is unique in a small school setting, and we work to engage each student by linking the curriculum to current issues and personal interests. WMS students graduate prepared to succeed because they know how to think analytically and critically, communicate their ideas with clarity and precision, and apply their skills and knowledge as engaged citizens. Numerous studies have demonstrated that a school's diversity directly contributes to the quality of its students' education. Exposed to various perspectives, students learn to think critically, challenge their assumptions, and explore alternative approaches and solutions to real-world problems. We know as well that children grow best when they feel wholly safe and wholly welcome. Students bring their backgrounds and histories to the classroom, and their classmates and their teachers are more affluent for that gift. The White Mountain School is a school built on relationships. Research shows that students who have strong relationships with their teachers are more likely to succeed. With 130 students, we value the teacher and student relationships through absolute numbers rather than ratios. Our students are known and known well. Teachers and students intersect throughout the day in multiple dimensions, from dorm life to work jobs and from the extra-curricular programs to the classroom. In so many ways, The White Mountain School has created a student culture that is healthy and joyful, curious, and kind. This cultural piece matters when students feel safe and known, and when they are grounded and feel joyful, they are better poised to think and learn with creativity, clarity, and confidence. We are also a school that asks questions. We embrace student-driven inquiry as to the driving philosophy behind our approach to teaching and learning. We know, both from our experience and research, that students learn best when they are invested and find purpose in what they are studying and when their work has an authentic audience. We encourage students to boldly pursue new and exciting lines of thinking, pushing, and inspiring them to live and grow into their creative and intellectual potential. At The White Mountain School, we believe that proper education should do more than inform. It should inspire. While aligned with a college preparatory curriculum, courses here extend beyond the classroom and into the world around us. Here students master their Spanish on our annual international service trip, practice forest stewardship as they help manage our 240-acre campus property, and learn to measure slopes in advanced algebra while designing their trail projects. Our teachers know that in every interaction with a student, there is a chance to motivate, mentor, and challenge they teach here because they genuinely want to share their lives and passions with young people. These components of our academic program balance rigor and relevance as we prepare our students for college and, ultimately, for lives beyond formal academics. View full school
  17. Stratton Mountain School was established in 1972. Warren Hellman and Donald Tarinelli founded the school in order for their children to train and compete in high-level alpine skiing without interrupting their high school education. Elite coaches and excellent teachers were recruited to join the new program, and parents provided the housing. As the idea caught on, SMS purchased an old ski lodge at the bottom of the ski area. The school continued to grow in its reputation and in the number of students that attended. In 1999, the school moved to its present location, a new campus on ten beautiful acres just off the base of Stratton Mountain. In 2005, SMS constructed new faculty housing, additional dorm space, and a state-of-the-art athletic facility. In 2014, SMS constructed the Patti Kaltsas Education, Arts & Student Center, and the Air Awareness Center. Today, SMS compares to New England’s finest independent schools as it provides learning, living, and training opportunities second to none. From the beginning, SMS graduates have attended the country’s finest colleges. Many join NCAA teams such as Dartmouth, Middlebury, Williams, Colby, Boston College, Bates, Bowdoin, UVM, and Colorado. More than 100 of our alumni have been named to National Teams, and more than 46 have participated in Olympics Games. Our Olympians include three gold medalists, one silver medalist, two bronze medalists, and several top-10 placements. Due to the energy, dedication, and talent of that pioneering group in 1972, SMS is now a fully accredited institution of 125-135 student-athletes in alpine, nordic, freeskiing, freestyle, and snowboard programs. Stratton Mountain School offers a unique, challenging, and focused curriculum that encourages students to maximize their learning in and outside of the classroom and to use their time efficiently and effectively as they navigate their academic and athletic goals. Our courses are carefully scheduled in order for each student to succeed as a scholar while pursuing their goals outside of the classroom. Students at SMS enjoy average class sizes of ten students, which allows for personalized attention from teachers and individualized approaches to classwork. The SMS curriculum is unique in that it is built around supporting the travel of winter sports athletes. In the winter, classes are conducted in the afternoons, and only core courses (English, math, science, history, and foreign language) are taught during this time. All teachers develop and maintain a robust web-based curriculum, with access to both assignments and teacher feedback easily accessible to traveling student-athletes. All core classes are NCAA approved for students who intend to pursue college-level athletics. The SMS curriculum has been carefully designed to assure the firm foundation of knowledge and skills that have allowed our students to excel in the most challenging colleges and universities in the country. SMS offers Honors courses during the junior and senior years. Honors sections are offered in all junior and senior-level humanities classes and advanced math, science, and language classes. Please note that Honors classes are not weighted differently than their standard counterparts. Students qualify for honors classes with proven academic excellence (typically a grade of 93 or better in the subject area), teacher recommendation, a history of timely and comprehensive homework completion, and class leadership. 18. In 1957, when Lowell Whiteman founded the School, he knew that students need both a vital academic education and a radical adventure. With his vision, Lowell Whiteman struck gold: he simultaneously ensured the well-being of the School's students and the quality of its faculty. Teachers had to love the classroom and love adventure. Built into Lowell's vision was the underlying foundation of a vital college-preparatory education through strong student-teacher relationships that remains at the heart of the School today. Steamboat Mountain School is, first and foremost, a college preparatory school. Philosophically, we embrace a solid liberal arts education. Students study literature, grammar and composition, math, history, geography, science, Spanish or Chinese, and art (be it film, computer graphics, or drawing and painting). We maintain our clear college-prep focus. Our classes remain small, with the largest at fifteen students. We do give homework- meaningful homework that prepares students for independent work in college. You can learn a lot about life at Steamboat Mountain School by dropping in on one of their many all-school conversations. Whether it is a Campfire Talk, All-School Meeting, The Penguin Huddle, or one of their unique speakers, learning through their community is unforgettable. During Penguin Huddle, students, faculty, and staff gather from their most recent class, morning chores, office, or dorm around the Main Building's open, three-story wood interior. A building constructed by students and teachers. Community members offer announcements, updates, news of things on the horizon: the service trip that afternoon, the study session for the AP test, the meeting for a film class, skiers results from competitions over the weekend, and more. You will see a similar scene in our theater for our Campfire Talks and Speaker Series. As the stories and conversations of backcountry campfires go, our school-wide Campfire Talks are a time when a student, faculty, or staff, will stand before the community and tell a story of triumph, failure, passion, or life lessons. Alternatively, during our speakers series, guests from around the Steamboat Springs community provide lessons, stories, or guidance for our young adult population by sharing their own experiences of navigating this critical time of development, the responsibly of independence, and the choices they made that lead to the careers and the people they are today. Upon joining the Steamboat Mountain School community, students, parents, and faculty are expected to support the School's mission and core values. We believe that by working together toward these common goals, we create a vibrant community that supports each student's growth. Steamboat Mountain School is a coeducational boarding and day high school that blends academics and adventure, combining an outstanding college‑preparatory curriculum with special programs out of the classroom and around the globe to build students' knowledge, develop their confidence and independence, and prepare them for meaningful and fascinating lives. The School is in the Rocky Mountain wonderland of Steamboat Springs, Colorado, a vibrant town surrounded by breathtaking natural beauty and a limitless outdoor opportunity. Students engage with rigorous academic work in small classes taught by skilled faculty, getting the challenge and support they need to succeed. Outdoor adventure, service-learning (on and off-campus), recreational skiing and snowboarding, and other out‑of‑classroom activities teach students valuable lessons about themselves and the world around them. Our competitive ski and snowboard program – run by the Steamboat Springs Winter Sports Club ‑ offers top athletes an opportunity for high‑level competition. Through these activities, students connect on meaningful levels with each other and with faculty as they learn about leadership, responsibility, self‑reliance, resilience, stewardship, and possibility. We build global understanding in ways no other school can match. Our one‑of‑a‑kind Global Immersion Studies program combines cultural immersion, adventure, community building, and self‑discovery as students spend four weeks each year in a developing‑world country. By the time they graduate, students will have spent four months in four different countries on at least three continents. Learning inside and outside the classroom complement each other in ways that shape a student's future. In the community, in the wilderness, and around the world, programs on campus build leadership skills, self‑confidence, and poise in the face of challenge. If a student can submit a 14,000‑foot mountain in challenging conditions, she will figure out quadratic equations. This one‑of‑a‑kind high school produces one‑of‑a‑kind graduates. Our graduates use their flexible skills and the sense of confidence to go on to build rewarding lives and careers in just about any walk of life you can imagine – plus many you cannot, because they have not been thought up yet. 21.
