- Doshisha Women's College of Liberal Arts was established in Kyoto in 1876 by Joseph Hardy Neesima, the founder of Doshisha, his wife, Yae Neesima Alice J. Starkweather, an American missionary, and others. Dedicated to core principles of Christianity, internationalism, and liberal arts, the college has a history of constant innovation. It has grown to include eleven departments in six faculties and four graduate schools on two campuses in Kyotanabe and Imadegawa. Total enrollment is currently approximately 6,500 students. Our educational and research activities are based on the three educational pillars of Christianity, internationalism, and liberal arts. In 2016 we celebrated the 140th anniversary of our founding. Since its foundation, Doshisha Women's College of Liberal Arts has upheld our founding spirit of love and freedom based on Christian teachings. The process of learning to establish oneself is deepened by nurturing feelings of love and dedication toward others. We aim to nurture women who are capable of demonstrating their love for others freely and willingly, without being preoccupied with their benefit—women who can indeed be "the salt of the earth and the light of the world." Through his experience in the Western world, Joseph Hardy Neesima realized the importance of seeing and analyzing history and events from an international, objective perspective rather than from the viewpoint of a single country. He put this insight into practice through education. To look at the world from a global perspective beyond differences in religion, culture, language, and ethnicity, and to seek a way of coexistence—these are the guiding principles of international education. Liberal arts originated from the seven areas of study (grammar, logic, rhetoric, arithmetic, geometry, astronomy, and music) that intellectuals in medieval Europe pursued to cultivate their views of humanity and the world. Ever since liberal arts education has been a proud tradition in the Western world. Since our foundation, we at D.W.C.L.A. have been committed to liberal arts as our education's core. We encourage students to acquire knowledge and skills in the area of their specialization and study a wide range of academic disciplines to obtain a broad perspective and understanding and ultimately contribute to making the world a better place. With liberal arts as part of our core educational philosophy, we offer a wide range of flexible study options that enable students to demonstrate their individuality and eagerness to the full while expanding their knowledge. Students can take courses offered by departments other than the one they are enrolled in, take courses at Doshisha University and the Consortium of Universities in Kyoto and participate in a domestic student exchange program. By selecting courses of interest from a wide range of options and correlating them as they study, D.W.C.L.A. students can deepen their interests and specialization while gaining a broad perspective on life and developing a lively, creative mind. With our step-by-step curriculum of specialized courses, students can systematically and effectively acquire a high level of expertise. We also offer an array of courses aimed at practical training. As a result, many of our students pass the national exams for pharmacists and registered dietitians. Students can also take deepen their studies by taking related courses offered at other departments. Since our founding, we have continually emphasized intensive small-group instruction to cultivate students' individual qualities and intellectual potential. Discussions and group work are the main activities of such intimate classes. This is an ideal environment for students to acquire independence and logical thinking and hone presentation skills and communication skills over the four years of study. We are committed to offering each student support and guidance regarding her career path throughout her four years at our college. From the beginning, students are encouraged to think about their future career options and shape their outlook on life and work through related courses. Besides, we offer qualification examination preparation courses that are attended by more than 2,000 students every year and internship programs at business and governmental organizations. Third and fourth-year students are eligible for job placement guidance, seminars, and meeting sessions with recruitment staff and alumnae. Also available is a hospitality seminar in collaboration with ANA Group and the teacher training program center for those who seek a teaching position as their first career choice.

- With the official inauguration of the Dharma Drum Institute of Liberal Arts (法鼓文理學院, DILA), let us explain the origins of the school's Chinese and English names as well as discuss the vision for the school's future. In addition to the considerations as mentioned earlier, the name of Dharma Drum Institute of Liberal Arts (DILA) was preferred to the rather lengthy Dharma Drum College of Humanities and Social Science (DDCHSS) for its concision and uniqueness to this day, there is in Taiwan no other Institute of Liberal Arts, nor is there a school with such a distinctive orientation. Finally, the English abbreviation of the school's name—DILA—resembles the word 'delight,' which resonates with our wish to create a campus where one may find delight in the Dharma. On the 28th of July 2014, the Ministry of Education held a meeting to deliberate on merging the Dharma Drum College of Humanities and Social Sciences and the Dharma Drum Buddhist College. The merging of the two schools into the newly-formed Dharma Drum Institute of Liberal Arts was approved Master Sheng Yen's long-standing vow to promote education has finally come to fruition. From here onward, doctorate, master's, and undergraduate programs initially offered by the Dharma Drum Buddhist College will continue to be available for enrollment at the Dharma Drum Institute of Liberal Arts' Department of Buddhist Studies. Similarly, Dharma Drum College of Humanities and Social Sciences' programs will be offered by Dharma Drum Institute of Liberal Arts' Graduate School of Humanities and Social Sciences which will start accepting applications for the master's programs in Life Education, Community Regeneration, Social Enterprise and Innovation, and Environment and Development in Spring 2015 for the Fall 2015 term. Following changes to the regulations surrounding the establishment of Colleges of Humanities and Social Sciences, an office was opened in September 1993 to start planning for the future Dharma Drum College of Humanities and Social Sciences, allowing Dharma Drum Mountain to pursue further its goal of developing Buddhist Higher Education. However, the gradual decline in the number of students caused by low birth rates combined with the saturation of the higher education market (171 universities to date) has resulted in a heightened competition over resources between Taiwan's 62 public and 109 private universities. In response to this situation, Dharma Drum Mountain decided to integrate the Dharma Drum College of Humanities and Social Sciences with the existing Dharma Drum Buddhist College to concentrate its resources and develop its distinctive focus. In order to bypass the requirement for Colleges of Humanities and Social Sciences to maintain over 5000 students, and as part of Master Sheng Yen's wish to create a 'small but beautiful' school which may become 'a cradle of positive change capable of training agents for the betterment of society,' the decision was made to take example on the North American tradition of liberal arts education and name the newly-formed school the Dharma Drum Institute of Liberal Arts—or Fagu wenli xueyuan in Chinese (法鼓文理學院). With a few hundred students enrolled in its various programs, the institute will be able to offer residential accommodation and small classrooms, fostering a strong sense of community and creating a free and holistic learning environment conducive to the growth of future leaders and the cultivation of an interdisciplinary outlook, a caring for life and a dedication to serving society. With its focus on graduate programs in Buddhist Studies and the fields mentioned above of study, the school has been given the English name of Dharma Drum Institute of Liberal Arts, in contrast to Liberal Arts Colleges' traditional focus on undergraduate education. With the protection of the spiritual environment as its guiding principle, the Dharma Drum Institute of Liberal Arts strives to further its goal of creating a productive learning environment for the study of Buddhist teachings as well as the humanities and social sciences and help train global citizens capable of responding to the challenges of globalization with the values of compassion, wisdom, harmony, and respect. - The Thomas More College of Liberal Arts was founded to provide a solid education in the liberal arts, a Catholic education for all faiths, united in the quest for what is right, kind, and beautiful. It pursues this mission by seeking Wisdom and sharing it joyfully with the world. The College holds that every human life, from the moment of inception until natural death, is sacred because the human person has been willed for its own sake in the image and likeness of the living and holy God. The human and his endeavors are worthy of our regard, interest, and study. Humanity and the human person's capacity are seen most clearly when viewed under the eye of eternity and the light of Revelation. As St. Ireneaus wrote so many centuries ago, "The glory of God is man fully alive, and the life of man is the vision of God. If the Revelation of God through creation already brings life to all living beings on the earth, how much more will the manifestation of the Father by the Word bring life to those who see God." Thus, the College affirms and enriches the age-old tradition, inherited from Greco-Roman civilization, studying the humanities through the masterworks of Classical and Christian civilization. It holds with equal conviction that the path to Wisdom is best found with the Catholic intellectual tradition's right companions—the Fathers and Doctors of the Church. Their lives were dedicated to understanding and living according to the Word of God. In pursuing its mission, the College does not neglect the desires and insights of people from other cultures and other ages, which strive to answer the most important question of Man's existence. All humanity has been created to know the highest truths and discover happiness in its end. The search, marked strongly by the desire for God and knowledge of metaphysical Truth, is only sustained when men and women live according to classical and theological virtues. Thus, the Board of Trustees is committed to supporting the moral and intellectual life of the College community. In the words of its patron, St. Thomas More, it seeks to establish, govern, and sustain a Catholic academic community in which "learning is joined with virtue." Thus, the College affirms that Catholic education is integral to the mission of the Church in Her proclamation of the Good News. Therefore, the College must be a place to encounter the living God who in Jesus Christ reveals his transforming love and Truth. This relationship should elicit all members of the College community a desire to grow in knowledge and understanding of Christ and His teachings. Far from separating reason, the study of culture, or science from faith, this Catholic humanism allows faith to illuminate reason, enliven culture, and give meaning to all learning. Equally, it allows reason to give voice to humanity's orientation towards the Truth. Such a dynamic between faith, reason, and culture demands a response in contemplation, prayer, charity, and action. It necessitates that the College supports each of its members in their discernment of discovering God's particular vocation and living it. In this way, those who meet the Truth are drawn by the very power of the Gospel to lead a new life characterized by beautiful, good, and true a life of Christian witness nurtured and strengthened within the community of our Lord's disciples, the Church. As a participant in the Catholic Church's educational mission, Thomas More College binds itself to the Church's magisterial teachings, communion with Her authentic hierarchy, and fidelity to Petrine authority. Thomas More College gazes with confidence at the heights which reason can ascend. However, it understands that the climb is arduous and requires something more than mere status or talent. It requires a path, a path-finder, companions, and—crucially—the desire to make the journey. The path is the Catholic tradition. At Thomas More College, students and teachers strive together within a single tradition—the great intellectual tradition of the West, of the Catholic Church, of our civilization. At Thomas More College, the academic life is founded upon the principle expressed by St. Thomas Aquinas that "the vision of the teacher is the beginning of the teaching," that is, that the source or principle of the transmission of knowledge and Wisdom is the teacher's own contemplative life. The College takes its motto, Caritas congaudet veritati–Charity rejoices in the Truth—from the ideal of a common pursuit of Wisdom. As Wisdom—human and divine—is a common good, it is the typical end of the whole community, faculty, and students. There is, therefore, one curriculum for all, without division into specialties or departments. Since human Wisdom is attained through reflection upon our experience of the world and deepened and refined through conversation with our ancestors, our program of studies encourages students and faculty alike to refine the experience of their senses, to hone and train the powers of their minds, and to follow the development of human culture attentively by the reading of great works from Classical and Christian civilization. - A liberal arts education offers you all of this! Not only will it equip you with the skills you will need to get an engaging job as a young professional, but you will become a knowledgeable citizen who can benefit society. Bratislava International School of Liberal Arts (BISLA) is a liberal arts college, the first of its kind in central Europe. Situated in Bratislava, near the borders of four countries – Slovakia, Austria, Hungary, and the Czech republic – BISLA's beautiful campus is right next to Bratislava's historical center, which offers you a real European environment and a vibrant atmosphere. You will study in English, in international classes led by excellent academics from Slovakia and worldwide. BISLA's focus on critical thinking skills, attention to the development of personal relations, and engagement in the broader community have brought results in the quality of education offered at BISLA. The OECD's 2013 survey, Assessment of Higher Education Learning Outcomes, confirmed that our education approach is right. BISLA offers small classes (typically ten students) where each student's voice is heard with attention and respect. All courses are taught in English. If you are from Slovakia or another non-English speaking country, your English command will be improved by BISLA's intensive training program in academic English. During their studies, every BISLA student undergoes an internship in a challenging position in the media, a public institution, or an NGO. Students are active in organizing various activities such as theatre, film and sports clubs, debating societies, student journal, etc. Every student is encouraged to spend a semester abroad at our partner universities in Europe, the USA, and Asia. BISLA students acquire the skills and knowledge to apply for positions in the private sector, public administration, media, and non-governmental organizations. Over 95% of BISLA alumni continue to pursue graduate education after BISLA. They have a very high admission rate to prestigious universities across Europe. More than 60% of our graduates have completed or are pursuing graduate degrees abroad. Our alumni do come back to Slovakia after their graduate studies and pursue careers in the public sector, non-profit organizations, media, marketing, culture, business, or academia. BISLA provides a well-rounded, skills-centered education, which serves as a springboard for a broad range of professional careers. Many of BISLA's graduate's study abroad in English, either English-language programs in central Europe or the United Kingdom or the United States. Our alumni have studied at 19 universities and faculties, almost half of them at institutions abroad like the London School of Economics, King's College, University of Oslo, the University of Groningen in the Netherlands, Central European University in Budapest, and more. We have alumni who continue to pursue their Ph.D. degrees in the United States and at Purdue University and the University of Chicago. Our vision is that universities provide an appropriate education to equip leaders with the abilities to succeed in a diverse world, bring long-term solutions to local and global problems, and contribute to society's healthy and democratic development, one that honors peace and sustainable human well-being. We also believe that the real purpose of education is not merely to secure a job. Education is essential for its own sake, as a conduit to a meaningful life, to understand world events and appreciate and draw energy from the diversity of arts and culture that our civilization has produced over millennia. BISLA aspires to provide its students with an excellent education that will become the basis for their professional career, personal well-being, and awareness of the moral values and ethical standards that are the precondition for becoming a responsible citizen of their community, be it local or global. BISLA follows the tradition of modern liberal arts and sciences, which we believe is the best way to provide appropriate education and teach each student the intellectual skills necessary to become a creative and critically thinking person in the 21st-century knowledge economy and to engage meaningfully in today's culturally and politically diverse world. BISLA endeavors to advance liberal arts education in Europe as the most efficient way to allocate resources into undergraduate education – the time, effort, and skills of students on the one hand and the funds and benefits offered by governments, companies, and society in general on the other.
