Montem is a vibrant inner-city school. We aim to nurture and inspire our learners to become motivated and successful citizens who are equipped to meet the challenges of today and tomorrow. We do this by creating a positive, stimulating environment that promotes the development of children’s academic, social, moral, spiritual, and physical learning. Montem School is a two-form entry Primary School catering for children from 2 to 11. There are 14 classes with 30 children per class and a 52 place Nursery. The classes are organized into age groups with two classes in each year group from Reception through to Year 6. Our school motto is ‘Together We Learn’. Because learning is at the heart of everything we do. We provide a rich and varied curriculum that enables everyone to succeed. We have high expectations of our children and provide lots of support to help them achieve. We believe everyone should enjoy school and we plan lots of exciting activities to make learning fun. Our school values – Cooperation, Honesty, Peace, Love, and Respect – are very important to us. Children learn about these values and are expected to support them. We expect children to treat one and other in a friendly and fair manner. If bullying occurs we will deal with it as quickly as possible and with the cooperation of parents. We aim to provide an environment where children feel safe, secure, and happy. Children learn best when school and parents work together. We work in partnership with parents and carers to support children and are always happy to meet with parents and carers to discuss children’s progress. It is the responsibility of the whole school community to ensure that every child feels cared for and safe in our school. We take seriously our responsibility to protect and keep children in our care safe. At Montem School we provide a curriculum that is rich and varied that enables everyone to succeed. We want everyone to enjoy school and plan lots of exciting activities to engage children with learning. In addition to a daily English lesson, reading is taught every day throughout the school and phonics happens every day in the lower part of the school. Starting in the nursery, all children learn phonics as a key tool for learning to read. We, like many schools, follow the Letters and Sounds scheme. We select texts very carefully to engage children as readers and expose them to a broad range of books. We use a combination of modern and classic texts including texts that reflect our school community. Reading for pleasure is a high priority. Children borrow books from our well-stocked library and benefit from support from our Reading Champion. As children progress through school, they are introduced to different books based on their reading skills. This depends on the child’s ability to decode the words and understand the contents. All our children write every day, in English lessons and throughout the curriculum. Children are taught to write for a range of purposes and in a range of contexts – some real and some imaginary. Daily maths lessons ensure children develop key mathematical skills. Our curriculum strongly emphasizes arithmetic as this is fundamental to all mathematical understanding. Problem-solving enables children to apply mathematical understanding in a range of contexts thereby deepening understanding. Science lessons emphasize a ’hands-on approach to learning. Children develop knowledge and understanding through investigations and experiments. As children progress through school their investigative and scientific skills are developed through a range of focused units. At Montem we can support children with Special Educational Needs (SEN) in many different ways. Throughout school life, a child may have some difficulties academically, socially, or emotionally. We have facilities for certain kinds of extra help for children in the school. If these are not sufficient we can call in outside help such as the Educational Psychologist, School Health Visitor, or specialist teachers.- Monteagle is a happy, purposeful place where children and adults enjoy learning together. Each year-group plans cross-curricular work around a central context or theme on a termly basis. This allows more time for each subject to be studied in depth. At Monteagle, we are committed to safeguarding and promoting the welfare of children and young people and we expect all staff and visitors to share this commitment. We are committed to ensuring that consistent effective safeguarding procedures are in place to support families, children, and staff at school. We have robust policies in place for ensuring the well-being of our children. These policies underpin our practice and every single member of staff in our school shares the values contained within. This means highly trained generalist teachers (class teachers) teaching high-quality lessons in English, mathematics, and across the subjects that make up our contexts for learning. We recognize that some subjects in the curriculum require a very specific skillset and knowledge base and for this reason, we employ specialist teachers to teach Physical Education, French, Art, and Music to children from Reception to Year 6. This is a measure of the value we put on these subjects. At the start of Reception children are assessed using the accredited baseline assessment, Early Excellence. This forms part of the teachers’ everyday practice where they build their knowledge of each child through observations, interactions, and everyday activities. They use this professional knowledge to make a series of judgments about each child based on a clear set of assessment criteria. Children continue to be assessed throughout the reception year where staff adds information to an assessment profile for each individual. Insights from these profiles are shared at parent consultation meetings and the completed profile is bound and available to be taken home at the end of the year. Also, each child has a learning journey scrapbook containing photos and pieces of work that are available during the year for parents to look at and are taken home at the end of the year. We aim to provide regular feedback to children through marking so that they have specific advice about improvements to their work. Children are given time to read and review their work following marking. They are encouraged to respond to marking to show they have understood the advice given and to add a comment if possible. Often feedback will be given verbally, directly to the child during their learning. This is the most effective form of feedback. Verbal feedback enables the child to ask clarifying questions, supply further information for the teacher to work with, and respond immediately to direction and advice were given, demonstrating understanding and affirming learning. We are part of the Haberdashers’ Foundation, and, as a group in Monmouth, have recently celebrated 400 years of providing an excellent education for girls and boys. Situated amongst glorious countryside: the Wye Valley, the Black Mountains, and the Brecon Beacons, Monmouth School Girls’ Prep is well placed to offer girls an inspiring education in uplifting surroundings. We share the marvelous facilities of Monmouth School for Girls and this, coupled with the warm, supportive environment of our Prep school, enables girls to flourish and achieve their potential. With small class sizes, excellent teachers, and strong pastoral care, we are ambitious for our girls, not just academically, but also on the sports, music, and creative arts fronts. To ensure that the transition to the senior school is smooth, girls are taught some lessons by senior school staff, enabling us, in particular, to offer sports coaching by teachers who are themselves, performers, and coaches, at the national and international level. Access to facilities such as the DT suite means girls can develop an interest in technical subjects at an early stage. We have a Learning Support Department which helps girls overcome difficulties in individual subjects. We believe strongly that girls learn best academically in a single-sex environment where distractions are fewer and we can bring out the best in them. However, due to our special relationship with our parallel prep school Monmouth School Boys’ Prep, we can offer many opportunities for boys and girls to socialize and learn together. Swimming galas, concerts, choirs, quizzes, discos, and much more, all provide a chance for the girls to learn to manage friendships. Our principal aim is to enable girls to grow and develop in a happy, caring environment.
