Learning Habitat Kindergarten & Bilingual Nursery (“LHK”) was established to provide high-quality bilingual pre-primary education for children in Hong Kong. Its first campus was opened in Tsing Yi in 2000. Subsequently LHK opened its second and third campuses in Hunghom and Tai Kok Tsui in 2004 and 2005 respectively. KIS’s origin can be traced back to Saturday School, which started in 1960 with just 6 students to provide for the needs of the Korean community in Hong Kong. An increasingly larger community’s needs and support from the Korean government was instrumental in securing and establishing KIS at Sai Wan Ho and today, we are indeed proud to serve KIS which not only cater to the Korean community’s needs but also welcome an international body of students from over 25 countries. Full stream Korean Section and International School have grown over the years, and whilst KIS suffered ups and downs with the fortune of Hong Kong itself, we are now on firm grounds to continue to grow with completion in 2013 of the second extension to existing buildings that will allow us to offer more classrooms and facilities to meet the increasing demand for international education. We believe firmly in providing a secure and stable environment in which students from all backgrounds can grow, work and play together while in Hong Kong so that they can go anywhere in the world with full confidence. We hope that the special environment at KIS, where two curriculums coexist side by side, whilst challenging, will provide extra stimulation and motivation. From its very beginning, KIS was served by Korean community representatives led by the Chairman of the Korean Residents’ Association serving concurrently as Chairman of the Board of Directors of KIS, and this unbroken chain of service has been crucial in supporting KIS over the years to what we are today. We are grateful to the HK government for allowing us to provide international education in HK, as well as the Korean government for their continuing support. We would also like to thank all members of the KIS community, from students, parents, teachers, and staff, as well as leading Korean community representatives for steadfast support over the years, and look forward to working with all for many more years to come. Korean International School was granted land at Sai Wan Ho campus in 1992 and was incorporated in 1993. Original stakeholders included representatives from the Korean community and the Korean Consulate, who elected the Board of Directors to oversee the welfare of the school. The Board of Directors was given the power to appoint Committees to manage the school and various Committees were formed and dismantled as the school saw the completion of the building of the first phase and second phase. The most recent such committees are the Building Committee to oversee the extension phase of facilities due for completion by summer of 2013, and the Fundraising Committee. At KIS, two schools are running two separate curriculums: the Korean Section following the Korean curriculum set by the Ministry of Education of the Republic of Korea, with the Principal appointed by the Ministry, and the International Section which follows Cambridge International Program, with internationally appointed Principal and teaching staff. Both schools are open to all applicants residing in HK. Given this duality, the Board appointed a Supervisor to head up the Management Committee whose members include representatives from the Korean community, Principals of both sections, PTA representatives from both sections, Chief Operating Officer representing school administration, and a representative from the Korean Consulate General. Korean International School started in 1988 with the establishment of Korean School, officially recognized and supported by the Ministry of Education of the Republic of Korea to provide continuing education based on Korean curriculum for Korean students in HK. To meet increasing demand, the Korean community represented by the Korean Residents’ Association of HK together with the then Korean Consul General, approached the HK government to grant a permanent facility, the success of which saw construction at Sai Wan Ho campus starting in 1992 with Korean International School being established in 1993. Over at the secondary school, S4 students are to be commended for their performance in the IGCSE examinations, with two-thirds of the grades achieved being distinctions. Welcome back to SISHK: 2016/17 has been the busiest year with the celebrations for our school’s anniversary. I’d like to take this opportunity to thank all our parents and community for your enthusiastic participation in all the events and for making the year such a memorable one! Our school year ended with some very good news from our students. In July, five of our Primary Two students won one bronze and four gold medals when they represented Hong Kong in the World Maths Invitational in Vietnam. Our DP students also performed very well in their Diploma examinations, with an average of 37 points for the IB Diploma and more than 35% achieved 40 points and above. We are very proud of our graduates as they start the next phase of their learning journey in universities all over the world including Oxford (UK), Cambridge (UK), Northeastern (USA), Berklee (USA), and British Columbia (Canada). One-fifth of the cohort will be matriculating to one of the Hong Kong universities. Some students will be returning to Singapore to pursue their degree studies at the National University of Singapore or Nanyang Technological University while others will be starting National Service back in Singapore. The interests of this cohort reflect the diversity of talents among our students, courses they will be studying range from Media Studies, Music, Law, Medicine, Physics, English, Chemical Engineering, Business to Accountancy, and others. As a whole, the academic achievements of our students are laudable. SISHK prides itself on our academic rigor and our student body ranges widely in terms of academic inclination, creative aptitude, language proficiency, physical capability as we are a non-selective school. Our school was first established at a site in Sai Ying Poon through the generosity of the Kadoorie Family in the 1890s. The Hong Kong Government assumed the school management in 1916 and the school later moved to its old site at Eastern Hospital Road. For many years, it was operated as a primary school until the 1960s with the introduction of secondary classes. It has remained a government co-educational secondary school ever since. In 1901, a group of eight Chinese businessmen and community leaders wrote to the Governor of Hong Kong asking him to open an English school for Chinese children residing in the Colony. Through the concerted efforts of Sir Kai Ho Kai, Dr. Tso Seen Wan, Bishop Joseph Hoare, and Archdeacon William Banister, St Stephen's College was opened in 1903, with six borders and one day pupil, as a Christian boys' school. The Child Development Centre (CDC) uniquely provides support to the widest spectrum of Special Educational Needs (SEN) issues in English and Chinese in Hong Kong. Over the past 40 years, we have been delivering a full range of early educational programs, assessments, and therapies. We were also the first center to integrate typical and children with SEN into group sessions. Our children include those with learning difficulties, developmental delay, autism, Down’s syndrome, and physical disabilities. The Centre informally began in 1976 under the guidance of Mrs. Sarah Roe, an occupational therapist. You may have heard of Mrs. Roe since the only English language special school in Hong Kong is named after her. Mrs. Roe began organizing a group in her apartment for English-speaking children with learning difficulties. The Matilda International Hospital was extremely supportive and offered available hospital space that could be used for a more formal playgroup. With the generous support of sponsors and parents, combined with a firm commitment from the Matilda Hospital, a purpose-built facility was opened on the grounds of the hospital in 1981 by Mrs. Anne Marden. Welcome to Victoria (South Horizons) International Nursery and Kindergarten. Every day we have over 400 eager students coming into our school which is located in the Southern District of Hong Kong Island. The large learning areas allow the children to move around with ease, engage in interactive lessons, and also allow enough space for quiet activities, small group activities, and individualized learning. Not only are the children able to learn from the internal school community, but they are also able to learn from the close-knit extended community of South Horizons. Our neighborhood allows the children to have real-life experiences that build on the classroom learning and improve the students' essential literacy, research, and problem-solving skills. There are many opportunities for parents to join in on class activities and field trips to promote collaboration between home and school, as many of our students and their families also live in South Horizons. We believe that our learning community not only consists of the school but also the home community in providing a first-class education for everyone. Located conveniently in the Southern District, there is an abundance of transportation to choose from that gets you to our campus. There are many buses to and from Central, Causeway Bay, and even Pok Fu Lam. With the new South Island Line of the MTR, it is even quicker to get to South Horizons from Admiralty. Whether you take the bus or train, when you cross over the Ap Lei Chau Bridge, you will get a glimpse of the incredible view that is on the South Island. We strive to deliver a balanced curriculum with hands-on, inquiry-based learning. Our campus has been an authorized IB World School since April 2015, and we have been a partner school of Columbia University’s Teacher’s College Reading and Writing Project since September the same year.
