Radboud University Nijmegen was established on 17 October 1923 under the name Catholic University Nijmegen. With their University, Dutch Catholics sought to promote the emancipation of Roman Catholics in the Netherlands, who were strongly underrepresented in public administration, the legal profession, medicine, and other sectors. The Radboud Foundation was the body behind this initiative. Radboud University is a comprehensive, international-oriented university that aspires to be one of Europe's best. Together with Radboudumc, we have created an intellectual environment that inspires and challenges our students and staff to extend the scope of academic disciplines and benefit society. Radboud University challenges its students to actively participate in the academic community and trains them to be critical and committed academics, with their views regarding scholarship and society, who will take up responsible positions in a society that is becoming increasingly internationalized. The University's academic staff come from all over the world, and a large proportion of our student population has spent at least some months studying at a university abroad. For its core activities of research and teaching, Radboud University draws its inspiration from academic curiosity and the demands placed upon the University by society. The Strategic Plan sets out the decisions made by Radboud University, based on an analysis of its strengths and weaknesses and of the changing environment in which it performs its core tasks. The Plan describes the goals that the University has set itself for the years ahead. Radboud University offers its staff and students an inspiring, pleasant, and safe work and study environment. It offers its students an education in optimal (academic) surroundings that contribute directly to their formative development as academics and highly trained professionals. To its staff, the University offers opportunities to pursue satisfying careers and develop in their career paths. Students and staff must treat each other and the outside world with respect and integrity. Each member of our academic community is accountable to themselves and others. In this respect, directors, supervisors, professors, and managers have a special responsibility. They are role models because they are to comport themselves with respect and honesty in their daily lives. They have an essential role in taking the initiative and organizing evaluative activities. Authority is clearly defined and transparent. Integrity relates to honesty, openness, and dependability in personal and business relationships, academic education and research, and administration and management. Respectful, as in viewing others as worthy of respect and value. Students and staff take great care when using the resources provided (both by the University and external parties); this includes funds, equipment, furniture, and sports facilities.
