China Pharmaceutical University (CPU), situated in Nanjing's historical and cultural city, is one of the "211 projects" key universities affiliated to the Ministry of Education of China. Its long history and its leadership role in China's pharmaceutical, academic fields have been known. The University was founded in 1936 as China's first independent four-year National College of Pharmacy and the first public institution for higher pharmaceutical education in China.
By the end of the Year 2015, CPU hosts more than 15000 full-time students, of which about 12000 are bachelor's or associate degree candidates, over 3600 are postgraduates. Its faculty includes 910 full-time teachers. There are two academicians of the Chinese Academy of Engineering, one academician of the German Academy of Sciences, four supported by the National Science Foundation for Distinguished Young Scholars, 6 "Yangtze River Scholars," 2 supported by "Thousand Talents Program of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, three supported by "Ten-Thousand Talents Program of the Chinese Academy of Sciences. The University is composed of two campuses, namely the Xuanwumen Campus and the Jiangning Campus, which cover a total area of about 2200 mu (146.6 hectares).
CPU adheres to the concept of academic first, teacher and student-oriented, win-win concept, implements the educational model of integrating knowledge, ability, and quality, highlights cultivation of students' creative thinking, and is committed to creating future pharmacy elites.CPU is the only one that has won the First Prize of National Teaching Achievements consecutively three times. In the Year 2014, CPU recommended three projects for the Teaching Achievement Award at the national level, all of which won the second prize, excluding any other pharmaceutical education institution. The graduate employment rate has always ranked top among MOE-affiliated universities and local colleges in Jiangsu Province. In the Year 2014, the undergraduate employment rate ranked top 1 among universities directly subordinated to the Ministry of Education.
The University promotes innovation in research and aims to develop novel medicines for public health. It has founded 18 pivotal labs, including The State Key Laboratory of Natural Medicines and pivotal labs at provincial or ministerial levels, technical engineering centers, innovative platforms. The University has established academic collaboration with overseas universities and institutions in over 40 countries and regions. During 2011-2015 the University has undertaken 26 major projects for the nation's Innovative New Drug projects and was endowed with 178 million Yuan funding, being No.1 among all universities nationwide. Our researchers won two 2nd Prizes of the National Science and Technology Progress Award. 2 new drugs were nationally certified. Six new drugs were approved for clinical research, and 410 patents were attained, and 3919 SCI-indexed articles were published.
We have made new progress in the joint postgraduate cultivation and international exchange and cooperation. In the "11th Five-Year-Plan" period, the number of postgraduates cultivated jointly between our University and other domestic and overseas universities, research institutes, and pharmaceutical enterprises showed a noticeable rising trend. Since 2008, our University has been carrying out the project of dispatching postgraduates to study abroad with the Chinese government's financial support. We have successively dispatched 64 doctoral degree candidates for overseas joint cultivation and 49 students to study for doctoral degrees overseas. In 2008, our University and the University of Calabria of Italy jointly launched postgraduate joint cultivation and international exchange project. So far, 20 students have been dispatched to Italy for exchange and learning. In 2010, we were granted the qualification of independent recruitment of students based on the Chinese government's scholarship. Since the 1950s, our University has brought up many academic-degree students and non-degree students for more than 60 countries worldwide, many of whom have played an essential part in politics, economy, education, and scientific research own countries.
