      About Me

      1. Odessa Infant School has 3 mobile classrooms and 2 play areas, one for the Reception classes and one for Years One and Two. The nursery is set apart from the school and has its play area. The nursery has 2 classrooms and takes up to 104 children part-time. Children can attend either morning or afternoon sessions. In the main school, we currently have 3 Reception classes, 3 in Year One and 3 in Year Two. Each class has up to 30 children with a class teacher and at least one teacher’s assistant. We share our site with St James Junior School to which most of our children transfer in Year 3. We aim to provide a broad, balanced curriculum for all our children and we strive to ensure that each child has the opportunity and guidance to achieve her/his full potential. The first years at school are so important in forming a child’s feelings about education that we focus not only on what we teach and how we teach it but crucially, how it impacts our learners. We aim to make the teaching and learning at Odessa both hands-on and fun!. We want the children who come to our school to develop a positive self-image and have the confidence to become purposeful, eager learner who will want to continue learning throughout life. The children have opportunities to access all these areas of learning both indoors and outdoors and engage in active learning. They have a combination of independent and focussed activities and are encouraged to explore their environment, develop their skills and learn through play. At Odessa, we are committed to the inclusion of children with special educational needs and fully support Newham Council’s policy on Inclusive Education. We have several children who are assessed as having special educational needs and are proud of the shared vision created by parents/carers/staff and other agencies for their teaching and learning. Extra support is given to children who need it, either by school support staff or by specialists and outside agencies. This will be within the classroom except when individual or group work may be better done separately. Where necessary, children will have an Individual Education Plan (IEP) to provide them with specific, achievable targets for their learning. All teaching and play areas have access to wheelchairs and we have a toilet and shower room suitable for children with physical disabilities. Some of our children are involved in our Rock ‘n’ Roll session, which is a form of intensive interaction that promotes language acquisition and turn-taking as well as confidence and self-esteem. The health, safety, and welfare of all our children are of paramount importance to all the adults who work in our school. In our school, we respect our children. We aim to provide a safe environment and an atmosphere where children feel confident, secure, and able to achieve their best. We teach the children about health and safety to equip them with the skills, knowledge, and understanding that will enable them to live positive, successful, and healthy lives. We do all we can to ensure that the school is a safe environment for all who work or learn here. We require all adult visitors who arrive during normal school hours to sign the visitors' book in the reception area and to wear an identification badge at all times whilst on the school premises. The date of foundation of Odessa Imperial Novorossiya University is considered May 13, 1865. The separate Faculty of biology had not been among the four faculties that were part of an educational institution. The biology education at the Imperial Novorossiya University was obtained based on the Natural department of Physics and Mathematics. This department's structure included: Department of Botany and Department of Zoology, Comparative Anatomy and Physiology. As part of the Zoology Department were zoological, anatomical, zootomical and physiological classrooms – "Cabinets". The Collection of natural exhibits belonged to the Cabinets of departments (they became the basis of modern museums of Odessa National University). There were laboratory facilities, where students conducted practical exercises and experiments and carried out research work. This successful defence allowed to receive diplomas of a higher educational institution. The botany department included two Cabinets: botany and physiology since 1895 based on this department were founded laboratory of microbiology. The natural branch of Physics and Mathematics Department originally was located in the building. Now there is Scientific Library of Odesa National University in the street of the Preobrazhenska, 24, and then into the building on the street Dvorianska, 2. In the early years of the natural department, an essential role in the development of research and basis organizing for the further development of biological science have played a prominent world-renowned scientist: I. I. Mechnikov - zoologist and anthropologist, L. S. Tsenkovsky - a botanist and microbiologist, I. M. Sechenov - physiologist and O. O. Kovalevsky - embryologist, comparative anatomist and histologist. Much attention was paid to the study of flora and fauna of the region, the Black Sea and its estuaries. Establishment of such units at the University as a zoological museum (1865), and the Botanical Garden (1867), as well as the creation and preservation of herbarium collections (1865), contributed to this studies. After the October Revolution (1917), Imperial Novorossiya University has undergone several reorganizations. In 1920 on its base were created three institutions, such as Medical Institute, Physics and Mathematics Institute, and Humanities and Social Institute. The last two fairly soon became part of the Institute of Public Education (ISE), and since 1930 - the Institute of Vocational Education (IEP). Biological disciplines in these institutions were taught in separate departments. Only from September 1, 1933, after the Odessa State University (biological Faculty was in its structure), the teaching of biological disciplines has risen to the appropriate level of education. These departments were included in the first list of the Biological Faculty: Zoology, headed by professor D. K. Tretyakov (he was the first dean of the Faculty of Biology), Hydrobiology (headed by professor N. A. Zagorovsky), Physiology (headed by professor A. I. Sinelnikov), Plant Physiology and Anatomy (headed by professor F. M. Porodko), Taxonomy and morphology of plants (headed by professor G. I. Potapenko), Genetics and Darwinism (headed by professor G. A. Mashtaller), Microbiology (headed by professor L. I. Rubenchik). Zoological, anatomical andzootomical museums, as well as a botanical garden, were included in this list. Many dedicated scientists and educators, including academician V. V. Zalensky, professors J. M. Lebedinsky, P. N. Buchinskiy, B. F. Verigo, V. M. Repyakh, V. V. Polovtsov, B. B. Grinevetsky E. I Sinelnikov, L. I. Rubenchik, academician of the Academy of Sciences of the Ukrainian SSR D. K. Tretyakov and V. I. Lipsky et al. a generous contribution to the further development of scientific research, processes of students learning and methods biological disciplines teaching. After the Great Patriotic War (1941), a significant part of students and teachers volunteered to defend their homeland. Many of them died heroically, including the dean, associate professor G. I. Konoplev, head of Hydrobiology Department associate professor A. K. Makarov, deputy dean associate professor S. I. Ditchuk. In July 1941, the Faculty of Biology with the University were evacuated to the city of Maikop of Adygei Autonomous Region. During the Maikop period took place two graduations of students-biologists. In late 1942, the University was evacuated to the city of Bairam-Ali Turkmen SSR. It also continued to work - conducted classes and field practices for students up to University's return to liberated Odesa in April 1944. In 1941, when the Romanians have occupied Odesa, they opened the "Odesa University" based on OSU. At this, university classes were conducted by the teachers who failed to evacuate themselves for the same students. The Transnistria authorities have proposed to continue education for them. In March 1944, it was the last graduation of this educational institution with the issuance of diplomas. After the Soviet troops' Odesa liberation, these students were graduating in the Odesa State University, which has renewed work with September 1, 1944. As a result of military operations, many buildings were destroyed in Odessa, including some university housings. Upon his return to Odessa in 1944, the Faculty of Biology 10 years held at the old place in 1955 it together with the Zoological Museum was transferred to the area reserved for the campus, in the building of post-war construction, at the address: Champagne lane 2, where it is to this day. Among the most prominent professors of that time, it should be mentioned the rectors: N. P. Savchuk, the corresponding member of the Ukrainian Academy of Sciences, P. L. Ivanchenko, S. I. Lebedev, the full member of Ukrainian Academy of Agricultural Sciences Deans of the Faculty of Biology of different years, professors F. M. Porodko, A. I. Vorobiev, I. I. Pogrebnyak, V. G. 8. In Odesa's life, there was a significant event, which left a significant mark in the history of medical education in Ukraine. For many years, it determined its prospect - the medical faculty of the Novorossiysk University was opened. The faculty had brilliant prospects, as some prominent, world-renowned scientists worked there. Before the faculty's opening, the construction of the main buildings and clinics, which were built on the last word of building and architectural art, was completed. Admittedly, this faculty was the most prestigious and most equipped medical, educational institution in Russia of those times. However, this successful start was suspended by the war between Russia and Japan, the revolutionary events of 1905-1907, the First World War of 1914-1918, the October Revolution of 1917, and the Civil War. Some time was meant to pass before a slow rise of the new higher education system started on the new bases after the destruction of the old one. However, the positive things laid in the pre-revolutionary times soon began to pay off. The medical faculty of Novorossiysk University was reformed into an independent higher educational institution - a medical institute, which again turned into the leading university of the south of the country. In the 20s of the last century, the primary scientific schools, that brought the world-famous glory to Odessa Medical Institute, were actively forming and developing. One of them was Odessa Therapeutic School, founded by the students of S.P.Botkin - professors S.V. Levashov and P.O.Valter, their successors, were L.P.Dmitrenko, M.D.Strazhesko, F.G. Yanovsky, M.O. Yasinovsky. At the same time, Odessa Ophthalmologic School, with Professor S.S. Galvin as one of its founders, was also thriving. Its further formation and world recognition are associated with the name of Academician V.P. Filatov. Over the years of independent Ukraine, our university has turned into one of the leading medical universities of the IV level of accreditation. It is a member of the International and European Association of Universities. Due to this, the level of training of students and specialists is close to world standards. Today, about 6 thousand students and trainees study at six faculties and 58 departments, 1300 of them are citizens of 52 foreign countries. The teaching of international students is carried out in Russian, Ukrainian and English. Postgraduate education is provided for 250 postgraduate students, trainees, masters and medical residents. The multi-field medical centre of ONMedU is a teaching and research unit of the Odessa National Medical University. The centre's primary function is to provide training and qualification of medical personnel for higher education standards, carrying out research, development, testing and implementation of innovative medical technologies, provision of highly specialized medical care to the population, including emergency medical care. This requires the introduction of modern diagnostic technologies, treatment and medical rehabilitation, availability of special high-tech equipment, and allows to carry out minimally invasive, endoscopic, endovascular, preserving organs, reconstructive-plastic interventions to surgical, gynaecological and other patients, modern treatment of cardiorheumatic patients and children. Employees of the clinic provide 24\7 medical care to Odessa's population, according to the duty schedule approved by the university administration and the Department of Health of Odessa. Consulting and diagnostic assistance to other health care facilities are also provided.
      9. Students of the Odesa Academy of music pass their practical training and its graduates successfully work at the Odesa National State Opera and Ballet Theater, the Odesa National symphonic orchestra, the Odesa theatre of musical comedy, the V. Vasilko Odesa Academic Ukrainian Music and Drama Theater, in many concerts, scientific and educational institutions of Odesa, Ukraine, Autonomous Republic of Crimea, in Russia, France, Finland, Germany, Poland, Italy, Austria, Yugoslavian republics, the USA, Canada, Mexico, Latin America, China, Vietnam, and in many other countries of the world. The Odessa conservatoire (for the time being – the Odessa national A. V. Nezhdanova academy of music) was created on donations of V. A. Orlov, the chairman of Management of the Odessa branch of IRMS(the Imperial Russian Musical Society), and those of other members of this branch, as well as due to the decision of the Main Management of the Russian musical society based on the Odessa musical school (founded in 1897) on the 8-th of September 1913. On the Russian empire's territory, the Odessa conservatoire became the fourth higher educational musical institution – after St.-Petersburg, Moscow and Saratov conservatoires. The Odessa conservatoire's fast development was provided by the attraction of outstanding teachers-musicians from Italy, Poland, Czechia, Germany, Austria, St.-Petersburg, and Moscow. A Polish composer, a pianist, a conductor and a musicologist Witold Maliszewski (Witold Iosifovich Malishewski) – N. A. Rimsky-Korsakov's disciple – became the first rector of the Odessa conservatoire. Therefore the Odessa conservatoire turned into a higher educational musical institution of the European level from its very beginning. Among the scientific and pedagogical professional community of the Academy are worthy of being noted: Four academicians 41 professors 11 doctors of sciences 89 senior lecturers 76 candidates of science 9 National Artists of Ukraine 32 Honored Artists of Ukraine 17 Honored Workers of arts of Ukraine 6 Honoured Workers of the culture of Ukraine and 1 Honoured Worker of education of Ukraine The scale of W. Maliszewski's creative activities was tremendous. He entered into the Odessa conservatoire history as its talented principal and a musician and as a progressive public figure. E.g., in 1917, the first rector addressed the congress of directors and senior teachers of conservatories in Petrograd. "The southern musical bulletin," wrote: "Only the director of the Odessa conservatoire Professor W.Maliszewski who had girded up his loins for the congress offered six very considerable and important questions to its consideration: 1) separating of musical schools from conservatories 2) the relation of the state to IRMS 3) revision of rights as to diplomas and certificates 4) cancellation of the category of free listeners in conservatoires 5) revision of military privileges 6) on returning of the new Statute of the Conservatoire from the ministry and its consensual formalization". In the first year of the Odessa conservatoire's existence, 396 pupils from 603 persons who submitted their applications for entering this educational institution were enrolled. Along with that, 395 persons were transferred from the musical school. The most significant number of pupils was accepted in piano classes, a smaller quantity – in violin, vocal, wind instruments, necessary orchestral instruments and music theory classes. From the beginning of the existence of Conservatoire vocal and young opera classes make themselves known alongside numerous piano classes. J. Reider, D. Delfino-Menotti and Palibina were chief teachers in these classes during those years. In 1913 N. Baryshev, a performer of the opera theatre having stage director's abilities became the opera class's head. Using N. Baryshev's efforts, the opera class realized its best performances. The bright culmination of the opera class's work became "Concerts devoted to national epic" arranged by N. Baryshev at the city theatre in 1916 where students of the conservatory's final year were acting. N. A. Rimsky-Korsakov's operas "Kashchey the Immortal", "Vera Sheloga" and fragments from "The Tsar's Bride" accompanied by the conservatoire orchestra under W. I. Maliszewski's direction were executed. Thus, the first turn-out of vocalists confirmed that the Odessa conservatoire became really "a musical and singing conservatoire" – as musical figures of the city dreamed about it long before its opening. Notably, all these structural changes were perceived only as external factors. No reorganization could extinguish the spirit of creativity reigned in the Odessa conservatoire and educational institutions connected with it. The Odesa Academy of music renders methodical assistance and provides teaching personnel for Odesa, Kherson, Mykolaiv, Uman, Ternopil, Simferopol, Kirovograd, Kryvyi Rih; it works in close cooperation with the South Ukrainian national pedagogical university K. D. Ushinsky. Almost all Odesa branch members of the National Union of Ukraine are graduates from the Odesa conservatoire. Teachers of the South Ukrainian national pedagogical university K. D. Ushinsky, of the Odesa school of culture and arts K. F. Dankevich, of the Odesa special Prof. P. S. Stolyarsky music school, pass their training at the Odesa Academy of music.

      16. View full university
