About Me

  1. St Francis de Sales School is a three-form entry federated infant and junior school (a federation means that the infant and junior schools used to be separate schools – but now the two schools are united under one headteacher). We serve a community of nearly 700 pupils from nursery through to year 6. At St Francis, every child is encouraged to discover and nurture their God-given ability through a stimulating curriculum that has global dimensions. We aim to engage and inspire our pupils by going beyond the restrictions of the national curriculum – producing youngsters who can take up their place in secondary education and the world of work with the knowledge and confidence they need to be successful. As a Catholic school, our overall goal is to fulfill the Church’s mission in education by ensuring we provide the highest level of academic achievement in a moral and spiritual framework. So, at St Francis, we aim to have a school where: Parents can trust that their children are being academically challenged in a caring environment. Children are enthusiastic and independent learners motivated by the rich and varied curriculum. Each individual is developed to take their place as an active and productive member of the Catholic community and within the wider world. Our mission, To accomplish the aims, we strive to follow the guidance of St Francis himself, who said: “Be who you are and be that well.” This motivates everyone at the school to be the best that we can be and this is reflected in our mission statement. “At St Francis de Sales every child will achieve their excellence by making outstanding progress in their academic, social and spiritual development. This will enable them to excel at secondary school and then attend a further educational institution should they choose.” Underpinning everything we do are our values – the core principles which drive our behaviors at all times. It is our strong belief that pupils who are aspirational, respectful, resilient, engaged, team-players will be successful in anything they choose to do. We also ensure our pupils understand the wider ‘British values’ – these are democracy, the rule of law, liberty, mutual respect, and tolerance. These British values link very closely to our school values and they are promoted through all elements of the school curriculum, systems, and processes. St. Francis de Sales Roman Catholic School originated in a school for boys, girls, and infants opened in 1827 close to the new church in Chapel Place. It had 65 pupils, a master, and a mistress by 1835. A new schoolroom was built in 1858 and enlarged in 1873. This was four years before classes moved to Brereton Road, where a new building was finished in 1882. (At that date school pence, paid by those who could afford to do so, were supplemented by a parliamentary grant.) The building comprised a schoolroom, partitioned off from the chapel on weekdays, and a classroom. This is now the Parish Hall. A separate boys' department was opened in 1885 and an additional schoolroom, for an infants' department, was finished in 1886. The enlarged school had 349 pupils by 1905, but attendance fell to 287 in 1919 and 252 in 1938. The school was evacuated to Ingatestone when war was declared in 1939. Children gradually drifted back to Tottenham so the school was reopened in 1940 using the air raid shelters beneath the church and in the convent (which had a separate school for girls). The convent received a direct hit during the war so in 1945 its school was taken over and extended in 1958 and 1969. So as a Catholic school, we encourage our children to be unique, creative, open-minded, and independent individuals, respectful of themselves and others in our school, our local community, and the wider world. We seek to develop the whole person and to nurture our children on their journey through life so they can grow into safe, caring, democratic, responsible, and tolerant adults who make a positive difference to the wider community. Children will have an entitlement to achieve well academically and at the same time to grow in equal measure in understanding Gospel values and living a rewarding Catholic life. The aim for our children is that when they leave in Y6, they are equipped to excel at secondary school and build the foundation for success in the world of post-compulsory education.
  2. We welcome you and your child to St. Cecilia’s Catholic Junior School. Welcome a partnership between home school and parish. We are determined, to ensure that all our children, irrespective of background or ability will have the best opportunity to fully develop their talents and enable them to become well-rounded individuals, with the key skills to meet future challenges. We aim to nurture happy, confident children with enquiring minds, who learn to succeed and contribute to their class school, and the wider community. We have high expectations of every child and strive to achieve high standards in all we do. We aim to provide a broad-based, lively, creative curriculum to challenge and motivate our pupils and enable them to participate in a range of high-quality learning opportunities. The school’s excellent facilities enhance the quality of the children’s education. We take pride in the building which is maintained to a high standard. During their years here we hope they will enjoy the stimulating and caring environment we create and that their true potential, both socially and academically, is reached. Our greatest resource is we work tirelessly to provide the best teaching and learning experience for each child. Together we can make our school a safe, happy, and caring environment where every child is valued and listened to and where together we strive to realize our hopes and expectations for all children. We place a high value on establishing close links between home and school so that we can effectively work together to achieve the very best for your child. Our vision is to create a nurturing school community where children succeed and are proud of their achievements. Rooted in gospel values St Cecilia’s Catholic School Community lives together, learns together, and loves together. At St Cecilia’s Junior School we believe that all children are precious and we strive to ensure every child has a truly positive experience whilst at this school. We believe that our curriculum must be shaped around the needs of each child, be broad, and be devised to equip the children to strive forward and make a difference in the world. We want our children to be inquisitive and to come to school with a hunger for learning. We deliver a learning challenge curriculum, this is not simply a list of specific topics to cover, but it is a way of planning and delivering lessons that capture the interests of the children and make the learning relevant to them, whilst also meeting the National Curriculum requirements. We have used a topic-based approach to the curriculum for many years this involves linking some subject areas through a common topic or project, designed to ensure the children are interested in purposeful learning, allowing the children to take more ownership of their learning and to develop independence and confidence. The challenge for our many able and gifted children is ideally facilitated by this approach and it also provides an excellent platform as we do our utmost to ensure our SEND and Pupil Premium children are also given every chance to achieve. The Curriculum at our school is relevant to the needs of our pupils and our locality whilst being flexible and accessible for our mobile population. Through our bespoke design, subjects are linked together within a learning challenge where there are clear, relevant, and strong reasons for doing so, other subjects are taught discretely. Across all curriculum areas children have purposeful opportunities to use and apply their core skills (maths, reading, and writing) to ensure that, through a wide range of activities, children are progressing in their skills and understanding and extending their subject knowledge. At St. Cecilia’s Junior School we believe that the curriculum should be alive. The children must have a voice to say what they enjoy most and what they need to learn. Here’s to a rigorous, lively, and enjoyable curriculum that is fun to learn and great to teach.
  3. We are a vibrant, diverse, friendly school in Heston, west London, and are currently in a consultation period to amalgamate with our neighboring infant school from September 2019. Springwell is a diverse, vibrant community where every child is valued equally, regardless of their social, cultural, religious, or ethnic background. Our goal is to create a culture of learning and mutual respect that enables pupils to develop into confident, independent learners who are also considerate, outward-looking citizens ready to embrace the challenges of modern life. We have the highest expectations of our children because we believe they have the same potential to achieve great things as any other child in the country. We know that our pupils are highly motivated and learn best when they face a wide range of challenges without the fear of failure. We encourage them to solve tricky problems or produce original ideas by exploring different possibilities, making connections with the real world, and taking creative risks. We help them to deepen their thinking and enhance social skills such as empathy and teamwork through a cooperative approach that requires them regularly to share ideas and listen respectfully to each other. We encourage them to reflect on their learning and that of their peers to recognize and celebrate successes, and to learn lessons from mistakes. We provide opportunities for children to take on responsibilities and leadership roles in class and across the school that encourage a community spirit, and we ensure that their experiences inside and outside the classroom go beyond National Curriculum requirements. Through building resilience, feeding creativity, and promoting cooperation we enable our children to continually achieve more than anything they have done before. We also make sure that every day we laugh, have fun, and celebrate together. Our vision and values are at the core of everything we do. They underpin our teaching and learning, providing an environment in which our children enjoy school, love learning, and look forward to the next steps in their lives.
  4. Welcome to Rokesly Junior School, a fun, friendly, and exciting place to learn and grow. Rokesly Junior School has been encouraging children from the local community to make the most of their potential for over 50 years. We help every child develop academically and socially, build self-confidence and enjoy a positive attitude to learning. Pupils work together to make our school a stimulating and safe environment where every child feels welcome. Our motto is ‘Working hard, aiming high, learning together. As a whole school, we aim to provide an environment that is purposeful, creative, and dynamic, a place where children develop a thirst for learning that will stay with them throughout their lives. We want pupils to grow into resourceful, independent learners who are equipped with all the skills they need to succeed in the modern world. We see the acquisition of technological skills as a fundamental part of this. We want all our pupils to be able to make a positive contribution to the school community and we also provide them with opportunities and encouragement to contribute to the wider community. We hope that this may lay the foundation for them to become responsible global citizens of the future. We aim for our school to be a place where individual strengths are nurtured so that children can achieve at an outstanding level, resulting in Rokesly becoming an outstanding school. Rokesly has moved to a topic-based approach to learning. Research has shown that topic-based learning helps children learn for a purpose, which is both more fun and more effective. In this approach, literacy, geography, history, design and technology and other subjects can all be linked to one topic per half term. Sometimes numeracy can also be included or it may be taught as a separate subject. Since skills and facts are not learned in isolation from each other, children make connections and remember them better. For instance, children whose topic covers one country will study the history of that country, how people live today, contributions that the country’s people have made to science and the country’s geography. Many different skills are covered by this approach: writing, reading, learning about maps and different terrains, building models (part of design and technology), and using computers for research and projects. Each year group has topics geared towards a range of interests to engage children. We have strong international links with both Spain and France. Our modern foreign language is French and every class in the school learns this language throughout the year. We are currently working with St. Agostino Colegio in Valladolid on our different cultures. At present we are developing playground games and instructions that we can share with them. Annually pupils from France visit us from 'Ecole de Vames Sur Cosson and share in the culture of our school as well as spending the day with us and seeing London life.
  5. We welcome you to Roe Green Juniors School. We hope that this will be the beginning of a happy and successful relationship where your child will develop the skills and attributes which will prepare them for a successful and fulfilling future. Our Aim is: ‘Be the Best you can Be’. Within that statement, we try to teach him or her to follow the Olympic and Paralympic values through PSHCE, the Humanities, R.E. our Behaviour policy and to follow these values in our daily lives. Olympic Values: Respect Excellence Friendship Paralympic Values: Courage Determination Inspiration Equality The Middlesex County Council in 1927 purchased about 17¾ acres in Bacon Lane, North Kingsbury. A portion of this area was appropriated as a site for an elementary school and the remainder is being used for the new buildings of the Kingsbury County School together with a playing field. The school was first open as Roe Green School on the 8th February 1932. On 11th September 1933, the junior and infant school separated to become Roe Green Infant School and Roe Green Junior School. The staff in the Junior school consisted of the Head Master, Mr. A. Johnson, and ten assistant teachers. Roe Green Junior school is a vibrant multi-cultural and multi-faith school in the very diverse London Borough of Brent. At Roe Green Juniors we respect the diversity of backgrounds of all our pupils. The acknowledgment that all people are to be valued regardless of beliefs, background, or ethnic origin is embedded in the core values that underpin our school. ‘To create and enforce a clear and rigorous expectation on all schools to promote the fundamental British values of democracy, the rule of law, individual liberty and mutual respect and tolerance of those with different faiths and beliefs.’ Throughout their time at Roe Green Juniors, pupils are taught about the school’s core values based on the Olympic and Paralympic values, namely Courage, Friendship, Equality, Excellence, Inspiration, Determination and Respect Pupils are taught the value and reasons behind rules and laws that they govern and protect us, the responsibilities that this involves, and the consequences when laws are broken. Visits from authorities such as the police and Transport police help reinforce this message. At Roe, Green pupils are actively encouraged to make choices knowing that they are in a safe and supportive environment. Pupils are supported to develop their self-knowledge, self-esteem, and self-confidence. Pupils are encouraged to know, understand and exercise their rights and personal freedoms and advised how to exercise these safely, for example through our e-safety teaching and PSHCE lessons. Vulnerable pupils are protected and stereotypes challenged. A strong anti-bullying culture is embedded in the school and any form of bullying is challenged and addressed. The school also operates a robust system of logging incidents. At Roe Green Juniors we believe that a healthy school is successful in helping pupils to do their best and build on their achievements. We are committed to the ongoing improvement and development of children in all areas of their lives. We promote physical and emotional health by providing accessible and relevant information and equipping pupils with the skills and attitudes to make informed decisions about their health and well-being. Our school motto, ‘Be the Best You Can Be’, supports this ethos. During our last OFSTED inspection, the extent to which our pupils adopt healthy lifestyles was considered to be ‘outstanding’. We continue to make this a priority in our school and encourage children to be both physically and mentally healthy. Healthy living is explored through a variety of curriculum areas, such as Science, PSHCE, PE, and DT, as well as through themed days, visits, and workshops. For example, Year 3 undertake a healthy living day with the organization ‘A-Life,’ which looks at diet and exercise to maintain a healthy body. Children are encouraged to exercise in a variety of ways during playtimes. This includes the use of playground equipment, football, and the adventure garden. Classes have the opportunity to use guided reflection CDs which help to calm the mind and give the children time to reflect and cool down.
  6. Rednal Hill Junior School comes under the umbrella of the Birmingham local authority. It is situated on the southwestern border of the city close to the Lickey Hills at Longbridge. The area has a strong history with car manufacture although much of the original site has now been developed with a new technology park, housing, and amenities. The school was built in 1952 and has three forms of entry from Year 3 to Year 6. It offers full wrap-around care from 7.30 am until 6 pm each day. The building provides access to the full range of curriculum needs and has its purpose-built dining and refreshment area. Good use is made of spacious grounds which provide ample scope for sport and recreation. Included on the grounds is a vegetable garden with a woodland walk, pond, and science area. We belong to a class community, a school community, and our family community. We enjoy working and playing in these communities. We understand that in a community there are rules and responsibilities. We also belong to bigger communities: Longbridge, Britain, and the World. We like to know about these communities and find out about the other people who share them with us. We all have lots of things in common. We want to be a responsible citizens by appreciating and caring for the communities that we live in. We are learning about our changing world and finding out how we fit into it and how we can make a positive difference. We celebrate differences and understand that people think differently and have their values and beliefs too. We like to work with our friends and encourage and support them to do well. We are good at teamwork and we know that sometimes we can achieve more together than we can on our own. We try to take on board the ideas of other people as well as sharing our fantastic ideas. We like other people to know that they can trust us and that we will be honest. In return, we want other people to be able to trust us. We are friendly to everyone at our school and value old friendships and new ones. We communicate well with others by listening and respectfully speaking to them. We are aware of the needs of other people and try to consider them in everything we say and do. We support others and demonstrate generosity, patience, and kindness. We know that we have choices to make every day. Some of those choices could have positive or negative outcomes. We want to make good choices so that we can enjoy school and life and that the people around us can enjoy themselves too. We can make these choices ourselves. We are aware that we will have to make choices for the rest of our life and that some of these will be moral choices. We are developing our own beliefs about what is right and wrong so that we can follow our conscience. We choose to stand up for other people. We do not tolerate bullying of any kind and we work hard to educate others to ensure that there is no discrimination in our school. We understand that our justice system is designed to encourage people to make good choices. At Rednal Hill we want people to respect us and be considerate of our needs. We show this respect to our friends, peers, and all adults. We are polite to everyone. We are aware of other people’s needs and show consideration. We are kind and demonstrate care for others by looking after people and sharing with them. We are patient and supportive as we want to help other people to be the best that they can be. We are appreciative of what others do for us. In school, we show respect to adults by following the school rules and listening to what we are asked to do. We show respect for ourselves, for others, and our environment. We look after the resources that we have and help to keep our school looking wonderful. We are all different and amazing! We like the fact that we are not all the same - we all have different strengths and different personalities. We are developing self-awareness and an understanding of our own identity. We want to reflect on what we do well and decide what things we could do even better. We are confident and independent: we like to be resourceful and problem-solve. We all believe in ourselves and know that we can achieve great things. We are free to be ourselves and should know our own beliefs and opinions and it is good to share these respectfully. We are aware of who we are and how other people see us. We are proud to stand up for ourselves and what we believe in. We are assertive.
  7. Queenswell Junior School is a community school for children aged 7 to 11. Queenswell is a dynamic school, committed to providing a rich education that interests, enthuses, and rewards each child. We have high expectations for every child and are dedicated to meeting each child’s individual needs by developing their curiosity and confidence to learn – both now and in their future. Our Religious Education program aims to develop children’s knowledge and understanding of all the major faiths, promoting tolerance and respect for each other as members of our multi-cultural community, underpinned by fundamental British values. Our committed and skilled team of teachers and support staff work together to plan and deliver creative and stimulating lessons which inspire every child. We actively foster the moral, social and physical development of each child within a safe and supportive learning environment. The learning environment is supported by our modern, well-designed facilities which include up to date technology in every classroom, landscaped grounds that include spacious play areas, quiet areas, a sports field, football pitch, and additional tennis courts We recognize that about 10% of our school population can be classed as higher achievers or gifted pupils, in one or several areas of the curriculum. We believe that children who fall into this group need special and extra provisions to ensure they reach their potential. Activities are arranged within the classroom and some external activities to ensure those children who may be gifted in a particular area are nurtured. We have a clear system of consequences should a child choose not to follow our school rules. These are also discussed at the beginning of every school year. Consequences range from a quick and gentle warning, to ’ time–out’ and missed privileges. Should a child misbehave repeatedly we would endeavor to solve the problem in partnership with their parents/ carers. For some children, a personal behavior plan with clear targets would be agreed with a strengthened system of consequences. In extreme cases the Headteacher has the right to exclude a child – this may be over the lunchtime period. The governors would become involved in cases of appeal. We believe that all children, whatever their home background, ethnicity, home language, physical disability, religion, gender, or ability, have the right to a broad, balanced and relevant curriculum that reflects the society in which we live, promotes the best dispositions for learning and ensures good progress. We want to keep you informed of the curriculum your child will be following throughout their time in our school. Children transfer from the Infant School to the Junior School at the end of year 2 via an application process. There are close links between the schools. The children have many opportunities to meet each other, for example in assemblies, joint reading sessions, and buddying with older children. Infant children have several opportunities to visit the Junior School during the summer term and their new class teachers also visit them in their Infant classrooms. Parents/ carers also have the opportunity to visit the Junior School in the summer term before your child transfers here in September. Our pupils and staff offer a guided tour and there is an opportunity to meet and talk with the Headteacher.

We aim that children leave Parklands Junior School with a clear sense of responsibility and independence and an understanding of the importance of community and how their behavior impacts others. We seek to inspire success in our children by creating rounded individuals who seek out lifelong opportunities to learn to be the best they can be. Parklands Junior values each member of the school and aims to develop every person’s potential, striving to remove barriers to learning and embracing diversity. We aim to ensure that everyone can participate fully in school life, making reasonable adjustments wherever possible to accommodate all members of the school community. The school aims to encourage positive attitudes towards diversity among staff and pupils to ensure that everyone is treated equally and can achieve their best. At Parklands Junior School we are clear that we have a responsibility to prepare children for life in modern Britain. We ensure that the fundamental British Values are introduced, discussed, and celebrated throughout the school. The Government set out its definition of British values in the 2011 Prevent Strategy, and these values have been reiterated annually and shared with all school staff. At Parklands Junior School, these values are reinforced regularly and in several ways. Several curriculum areas enable us to further the understanding of these concepts including SMSC, RE, and PSHE. These subjects provide opportunities to deepen and develop pupils’ understanding and embrace these concepts with enthusiasm. They are then able to demonstrate a good understanding of how these values can be applied to their own lives.

  11. Newnham Juniors is a large school with 360 pupils on roll, located in Eastcote, Middlesex. Our pupils are from a rich, culturally mixed background and the proportion of pupils with special educational needs is below average. Many factors contribute towards the school’s success and the first and probably the most important is the strong school community. The staff, as in most schools, are hardworking and go over and above to find ways to make the learning environment fun and stimulating for the pupils. Many members of staff including teachers, teaching assistants, and office staff has been at the school for over ten years. This stability leads to a common approach to all aspects of school life, including consistency and ownership of high expectations in terms of achievement and standards. Everyone takes great pride in what happens here. The School Council is well established and the pupil's voice is strong, with children making democratic decisions on what and how they learn and the Governing Body supports and challenges the school to maintain high standards. Parents are kept fully informed about the progress their children are making and are extremely supportive and keen to be partners in their children’s education. One of the comments from an end of year 6 questionnaire in 2014 was, ‘My child was offered a fantastic range of opportunities in a safe, friendly environment. She was academically challenged and her needs were catered for. Newnham also has a great community feel’. Over the last few years, the school has continued to develop an ethos of ‘hard work achieves success. An inspiring visit by Mathew Syed (British journalist and broadcaster who also played table tennis for Great Britain in two Olympic Games) cemented this belief and now through our day-to-day rewards and weekly assemblies, we celebrate effort and progress by all. Our creative curriculum gives children the opportunity to be successful in all areas and we try to make the learning interactive and real e.g. we recreate a Victorian coal mine experience from which the children write emotive poetry. Through a termly cycle of curriculum monitoring by subject leaders, which includes a discussion with pupils, staff at Newnham work hard to keep the curriculum up to date and relevant to all and strive to be creative, apply a cross-curricular approach, and offer pupils a wide range of learning experiences. Through the provision of these stimulating experiences in and out of the school environment, the children are provided with a platform to write for a range of purposes. Since OFSTED in 2011, a strong focus on developing sentence construction throughout the school, hand in hand with an increased emphasis on grammar is having a significant impact on improving children’s writing. Professional development for all staff has been important, alongside quality planned writing opportunities in the foundation subjects. At the heart of our approach is Assessment for Learning (AFL) and the desire for all children to develop the skills of collaboration, inquiry, and reasoning linked with the 5Rs (respect, responsibility, reflection, resilience, resourcefulness). Marking is part of the learning process where next steps and peer and self-assessment all play a part in supporting the children to move forward. Formative assessment feeds into weekly planning which constantly evolves and this gives a strong sense of ownership for all the staff. Termly pupil progress meetings help to identify and provide for children who are not achieving their full potential. This provision could be through intervention programs or extra resources or further support. All data is discussed with parents and children which supports them to know where they are aiming for and their next steps. The data tracking system allows the SMT to identify strengths and weaknesses across the school and act upon them where necessary. This information, along with the curriculum monitoring, feeds into the School Development Plan, and governors are also involved in a partnership with the monitoring. In conclusion, the school continually reflects on its achievements and its areas for development. We look at new, up-to-date ways in which to engage children and to keep the learning process fun and positive for all.

The aims of mount Stewart junior school: To provide a challenging, yet supportive environment to stimulate, maintain and develop, a lively enquiring mind. To encourage all pupils to reach their true potential and eventually become independent learners who value learning with and from others, i.e. have a positive attitude to life-long learning. To value application, perseverance, initiative, and independence of thought and action, as well as cooperative endeavors. To develop in pupils a sense of moral values which can form a framework for a sense of own worth, and relationships with others, so become responsible members of society. To develop in pupils a positive attitude towards themselves and others with a strong sense of self-respect. Also to develop a sense of respect for other peoples’ property, ideas, and beliefs irrespective of gender, race, disability or academic achievements, etc. To appreciate human achievements, failures, and aspirations. To develop positive attitudes towards and concern for the environment. To offer a broad-based curriculum to facilitate the acquisition of knowledge, promote enjoyment in learning, and provide knowledge and skills to equip students for work and leisure as active, confident, and responsible members of a rapidly developing society. At Mount Stewart Junior School we aim to make learning around experience. We deliver a diverse enriching curriculum that develops skills through creative hands-on learning. Our curriculum is relevant and meaningful to children as it has an emphasis on the children’s interests and has a consideration of their different families, cultures, religions, and backgrounds. Children are also given exciting opportunities to explore topics each half term through a mixture of interesting homework activities and projects, workshops, and trips. The Government set out its definition of British values in the 2011 Prevent Strategy, and these values have been reiterated this year (2014). At Mount Stewart Junior School these values are reinforced regularly in the following ways. In actively promoting British Values, we will also focus on, and be able to show how our work with pupils is effective in embedding fundamental British values. This also means challenging pupils, staff, or parents to express opinions contrary to fundamental British Values, including ‘extremist views’. Much of our current work already encompasses these values and will be intrinsically linked to our School Teaching Plan.
  13. Moss Hall children come from a wide variety of backgrounds and cultures and this is what makes our school the special place that it is. Our whole school ethos and approach to learning is built upon mutual respect, understanding, and a sense of shared community responsibility – as encompassed by fundamental British values. Our main aim is to encourage all children to achieve their full potential by offering them a broad and balanced curriculum. The children are given many opportunities through a wide range of activities to give them the best preparation for the future. We develop a love of learning in all of our children by offering them a positive, rich, and inclusive experience. We pride ourselves in the harmony we achieve in our multicultural community and place the highest value upon mutual understanding and respect for each other. A special feature of our school is the wonderful enthusiasm displayed by the parents and carers towards supporting the school and its many events. We believe that every child matters and has his or her skills. Our staff team aims to develop these skills and abilities so that each individual can reach his or her full potential. Our commitment is to equality of opportunities and meeting the needs of all pupils regardless of race, religion, ethnicity, gender, disability, or educational need. Learning at Moss Hall is challenging, motivational, and rewarding. We have high expectations for all and are committed to delivering quality teaching and learning that will enable each individual to progress well and to achieve to the best of their ability. The relationships that we develop with our children, their families, and the wider community are key in helping each child to succeed and in acknowledging our shared responsibility for their progress. We want our children to be independent, confident, and curious learners and to this end, we offer a broad and balanced curriculum. In addition to the academic subjects required by the National Curriculum, we provide a wide range of enrichment activities too. We are especially proud of the opportunities offered through sport, music, and the creative arts – both during the school day and at school clubs. To enthuse and inspire all of our children we use a range of learning styles and environments. We plan to learn opportunities that require our children to listen, look and do, in their classrooms, in our extensive grounds, and out in the wider community too. We expect our children to ask questions, solve problems, and demonstrate a keenness to ‘have a go’ at a range of diverse challenges. We help our children to develop a useful bank of transferable skills and provide opportunities for them to practice and to apply them in assorted contexts. We believe that children learn effectively from each other, from school staff, and other adults and so we plan creative and practical opportunities for them to learn collaboratively with children from other classes and visitors and trips into the community too. Values-based Education is an approach to teaching that works with values. It creates a strong learning environment that enhances academic attainment and develops students’ social and relationship skills that last throughout their lives. A positive learning environment is achieved through the positive values modeled by staff throughout the school. It quickly liberates teachers and students from the stress of confrontational relationships, which frees up substantial teaching and learning time. It also provides social capacity to students, equipping them with social and relationship skills, intelligence, and attitudes to succeed in school and throughout their lives. We want our children to be socially, emotionally, spiritually, and culturally aware. We encourage them to be active participants in all aspects of school life and to be proud to make positive contributions to the wider community. In our nurturing and inclusive culture, we address the needs of each individual, ensuring that they feel happy, safe, and supported, in the knowledge that they are valued members of our school family.

  22. Whitehead Junior School is a successful, vibrant school, a school where children come first. We have a highly motivated, resourceful, and committed team of staff and governors who care about and nurture the needs of every child. We want our children to be happy at school and for learning to be fun and challenging. We set high expectations and want to give our children every opportunity to become confident and independent learners. We work closely with parents to ensure this happens and recognize the importance of good communication between home and school. Staff from both schools, meet to discuss and plan carefully for the transitionary process and there is a lot of sharing of ideas and planning in both the short and the long term. Continuity is encouraged. We also have very good links with several of our local secondary schools. We aim to help the children to reach their full potential, develop their social awareness, and encourage each child to take part in a variety of school activities. The school provides an extensive range of extra-curricular activities and we intend to educate the children for life, not only for their school days. We actively welcome new parents, parent helpers, and all visitors to the school. We have lots of plans for the year ahead and will keep you up to date with events and news as they happen. Our aim is for each child leaving Whiteheath Junior School for their Secondary School to be self-confident, reliable, willing, and keen to enjoy the next stage of their education. Sharing an ethos similar to that of our infant colleagues, a Whitehead Junior School we aim to help each child reach their full potential. We hope to educate each child for life, believing the whole child is of the greatest importance. Priority is given to attainment in literacy and numeracy, but we also strive to raise standards in all areas of the curriculum. We provide a school with an open door policy emphasizing the tremendous support of parents and Governors. The Mission of Whitehead Junior School is to be a school that everyone associated with it can be proud of. Our school is to be characterized by a firm commitment to its Code of Conduct, which encourages and expects the whole school community to show respect for learning, themselves, others, and the school environment. Each child will be encouraged to develop spiritual and moral awareness, characterized by a concern for and sensitivity towards others, the school, and the wider community and a respect for other cultures and beliefs. A harmonious, aesthetic, and encouraging learning environment will be created where equal opportunity exists for all. Within school, pupils are actively encouraged to make choices, knowing that they are in a safe and supportive environment. As a school, we educate and provide boundaries for young pupils to make choices safely, through of provision of a safe environment and empowering education. Pupils are encouraged to know, understand and exercise their rights and personal freedoms and advise how to exercise these safely, for example through our E-Safety and PSHE lessons. Whether it be through choice of challenge, of how they record their work, or participation in our numerous extra-curricular clubs and opportunities, pupils are given the freedom to make choices. Part of our school ethos and behavior policy has revolved around the importance of ‘relationships’ and our Code of Conduct is based on ‘Respect’, and pupils have been part of discussions and assemblies related to what this means and how it is shown. Posters around the school promote respect for others and this is reiterated through our classroom and learning rules, as well as our behavior policy. Our pupils know and understand that respect is expected and that we must respect our school, our learning, each other, and ourselves. Children learn that our behavior choices have an effect, not only on themselves but on others.

  24. We are a larger than average junior school but we pride ourselves on maintaining the caring atmosphere often associated with smaller schools. Our new students each year tell us that they find the school welcoming and secure. We have a broadly equal number of boys and girls and a full range of abilities. Thames View Junior School is at the heart of our community. It is a place where everybody has a voice and is valued. Positive relationships between staff, pupils, and parents ensure that our children flourish in an environment of mutual respect and tolerance. We are an ambitious school with high expectations of both staff and pupils. Our children will leave us, ready to positively embrace life in modern Britain, and through our broad and balanced curriculum, we endeavor to prepare them for the stage of their academic journey. We believe parental co-operation and support are key factors in educational success. Class teachers, Year Group Leaders, and our Senior Leadership Team are all happy to be contacted about individual children. Often, an early word between parent and school can prevent any worries from developing into a problem. The school is also starting the Parent-Teacher Association, which will organize fund-raising and social events which will make a major contribution to the life of the school. If you are interested in getting involved please let a member of staff know. We have an excellent team of teachers, well-qualified academically, hard-working, and committed to ensuring that every student achieves his or her best. Many of our staff have taught in the area for a long time and know the community well. Just as importantly, we have been able to attract new young staff who bring fresh ideas and expertise. There are no mixed-ability classes at Thames View Junior School. Students are placed in one of three bands according to their ability. All their lessons take place with students of similar ability to themselves. Teachers are therefore able to push every child at the right pace, allowing high-ability students to move ahead very quickly and students who need extra support to get the help they need. Each student’s progress is regularly reviewed to make sure they are in the correct band. Our curriculum comprises a mixture between schemes of work and our own devised curriculum which we review every year to best fit the changing and developing needs of our learners. The backbone of our curriculum is underpinned by rich, high-quality texts that are challenging, engaging, and accessible to the children. We form our creative topics around these texts which you can see in our topic maps below. Topic time covers all foundation subjects. By designing our tailored curriculum, we know that we are delivering our children a broad, balanced, and varied curriculum, full of opportunities to problem solve, explore the wider world, and have an understanding of the immediate world around them. We believe that all of these elements encourage our children to be resilient and independent learners who are well prepared for the next stage of their education and life in modern Britain. We promote and teach mindfulness through our PSHE scheme and positive mindsets are embedded around the school, meaning our children have a ‘can-do attitude. This ethos means that our children are respectful and tolerant and share in each other's successes. We run a huge range of after-school activities, please ensure that you look at our most recent clubs under the Teaching and Learning Tab. We believe that children should have opportunities to continue learning outside of the classroom and actively encourage all of our children to join our clubs, all of which are free of charge. Homework is set daily for reading and weekly for spellings and maths. Children are also given two topic-style projects over each half term which they are encouraged to complete with you at home to immerse themselves further in the area of study. For children that are unable to complete their homework or need some extra support, we offer a homework club that runs on Monday after school. We keep a very careful check on each student’s progress as they move up through the school. Parents receive a full written report on their child once a year, as well Parent Consultation meetings twice a year. Parents are also invited in at the end of each half term to share in the children’s achievement of their wider work or topic area. Teachers assess children half termly through optional testing and take part in pupil progress meetings with the Headteacher every term. The great majority of Thames View Junior School students are well-behaved and work hard. They are rewarded with praise, team points, certificates, prizes, and certificates in assembly. Those few students who choose to break the rules must face the consequences of their actions, which can include behavior logs, missing golden time, time out, lunchtime detention, and eventually exclusion from school. We take a particularly strong line in dealing with any signs of bullying. We are very fortunate to have a small school library with a variety of texts accessible to all children. Each classroom also has a class library with a selection of excellent books. We are a school that truly values the cultural arts. The children take part in weekly singing assemblies and put on yearly shows and concerts including a Christmas Pantomime, Carol Service, Spring Concert, and Summer shows. It is an embedded part of our school calendar and something that we are very proud of. We encourage all children to actively take part in sports both in and out of school. We run over 15 sports clubs and regularly take part in borough competitions that include, football for both girls and boys, tag rugby, cross country, and athletics. All children also take part in inter-house sports competitions to earn points for their teams and compete for the glory of the house cup.
  25. The Annunciation School was started at the invitation of Cardinal Bourne of the Archdiocese of Westminster who invited the Dominican Sisters to found an all-age school intended to serve the newly built Watling Estate. With selfless dedication, the Sisters moved to Burnt Oak and using their funds had the School built-in 1931. The school was originally sited next to the Church and intended to serve the needs of Catholic children of all ages from the parishes of Burnt Oak, Kingsbury, and Edgware. After a short time, it was soon oversubscribed and several classes were given temporary accommodation in North Road. The purpose of our school is to provide a Catholic education for our children and develop sound Christian principles. We aim to foster links with the wider community – the children’s families, the parish, and link schools. We will make the children aware of the less fortunate members of the community through the work of the Catholic Children’s Society and other agencies. We provide a Christian community within the school so that each child may learn to live as a member of God’s family, developing self-respect and self-discipline, and become sensitive to the needs and feelings of others. We enable our pupils to progress as individuals and still achieve standards of excellence. Our children’s mission statement is “Be who God meant you to be, and you will set the world on fire.” All of the adults, who work here at The Annunciation Junior School, strive each day, to ensure our children are safe, happy, and excited to learn with us. With God’s guidance and blessing, we walk alongside our children, as they undertake their faith and educational journeys. We recognize the value of each child, nurture and develop the God-given gifts, talents, and spirituality, and foster a secure and happy environment. This will be carried out within the atmosphere of a Catholic community where we travel together on our journey of faith developing our potential. Prayer, worship, and liturgical celebration will take the form of classroom and year group prayer, assemblies, and Masses. There will be a positive recognition of the individual child, acknowledging the value of achievement in any area of the child’s development. We create a pleasant, friendly environment in our classrooms, which is conducive to learning shall endeavor to identify and meet each child’s needs. We believe that by working harmoniously together for the good of all, we can create an atmosphere of mutual respect between all members of the school community. At our school, we place a very strong emphasis on relationships and mutual respect. We expect and encourage all members of our community to treat each other with dignity, compassion, and tolerance. We behave towards each other with kindness and gentleness and have a focus on praise and encouragement. We have a strong tradition of very successful partnership working with our parents. We encourage and facilitate effective communication so that together we can promote high standards of behavior for learning and play. We have a warm and supportive partnership with our parish and local community and are extremely proud of our children and the contribution they make.
