Hafodwenog is an area school, opened in 1972 to serve the children of Alma, Bryn Iwan, Cilrhedyn, Dinas, Gelliwen, Pandy, Penybont, Tagalog, and Trelech. The school has been planned in four units surround the school hall. Two units comprise of classrooms Foundation Phase learning area and Junior learning area. There are a further two units, one consisting of the staff area and the second where the Kitchen and school meals are prepared and served. Welsh is the official language of the school. It is the only medium of instruction in the Foundation Phase. English is introduced at Key Stage 2. To fulfill the Education Authority’s bilingual policy teaching resources of a high standard are provided to ensure that pupils can express themselves fluently and easily, verbally and in writing, in Welsh and English by the time they transfer to secondary education. Children can begin school at the beginning of the term before they reach their fourth birthday and receive full-time education. " As a school we will endeavor to develop an exciting, learning environment with a Welsh, nurturing ethos for the whole school community, to develop children's self-belief and self-respect, ensuring that opportunities are provided for every individual to reach their full potential." At Ysgol Hafodwenog the children are encouraged to follow the star! The star has 7 points and at the end of each point is a word that relates to school rules or which will help our school community to be a better place. These are the words on each point of the star: In conjunction with this, both classes have traffic lights on the back of the classroom door. All the children's names are on the green at the start of each day, however, if they misbehave in class or outside the classroom their name is moved onto the orange and then the red. The children are firstly given a warning and if they still behave inappropriately they are placed on the next color. There is also a Children's Assembly which is held on a Friday afternoon. Where children are encouraged to discuss different talk topics each week. Stars are also given to pupils if they have achieved something special or followed one of the points [words] on the star exceptionally well. Through our students’ personalized learning plans, Hackney New School can offer an extensive range of support and enrichment activities to support and challenge our students. The personalized learning sessions for students requiring support include small group lessons in areas such as literacy, numeracy, or social skills. The following is an example of the Summer Term support program currently on offer to our students. The Library at HNS currently has 3700 fiction and non-fiction books housed in a light airy room on the third floor of the main Canal Building. The library is managed by two librarians with the support of a rota of Year 7 student librarians. In keeping with the school’s core beliefs of academic excellence, intellectual curiosity, responsibility, and self-belief, the library provides students and staff with a wide range of educational and recreational books and magazines designed to support the needs of all users, from ‘quick reads’ – that is, shorter simpler books aimed at teenagers – through to classics in beautiful hardback editions which students are encouraged to tackle to challenge themselves. The primary focus of the library is to foster a love of reading for pleasure within every student. Years 7-9 have a library lesson in the library every week in which they are encouraged to browse the shelves, choose books of interest and enjoy some unfettered reading time. A librarian is on hand throughout, to guide reading choices, make recommendations and, at the end of the period, lead a short literary appreciation discussion. There is an online catalog (the Web OPAC) accessible from any computer within the school. Students and staff can search for books and websites by title, author, subject, or keyword. The catalog homepage is regularly updated with news items, such as Author of the Week, book lists under subjects, and links to online resources. Users can also log on to their area of the catalog and see their borrowing history, review, reserve or renew their books, and create book lists. The library hosts weekly ‘reading buddies’ sessions during which year 9 volunteers read with year 7 students, supporting them with their literacy and helping them find books at their level. Year 9 reading buddy volunteers undergo training to help prepare them for this important role. We are in the process of setting up a formal arrangement with the international publisher Hachette a project which they will facilitate to encourage reading for pleasure amongst all of our students, including those who struggle with reading. Following the successful opening of its new secondary school at Downham Road, the Hackney New School Academy Trust is delighted to have gained a Funding Agreement from the Department for Education to open a new community primary school in September 2015. Work to prepare for the opening of Hackney New Primary School (HNPS), which will have a cohort of 50 children in two Reception classes, commenced in July 2014. Our vision for HNPS is to provide students with access to the widest range of opportunities in life by fostering academic excellence and instilling self-belief, intellectual curiosity, and responsibility towards others in society. You may include Hackney New Primary School as one of your 6 choices on the online admissions form. Hackney New Primary School is organized into three phases. Each day at school comprises the Core Curriculum in the morning and the Foundation Curriculum in the afternoon. Children in Reception are taught from the Early Years Foundation Curriculum and Year 1 children from the National Curriculum. The aim of Phase 1 is to settle children into school life as quickly as possible, supporting them to become autonomous and independent learners, who are calm, kind, and considerate to others. There is a focus on teaching every child to read, alongside rigorous teaching of the other core subjects. We aim to address quickly any differences in children’s early experiences through high-quality teaching and targeted support, so all children can play an active part in school life. Phase 1 has a separate outside area for play. We hope that Phase 1 days are full of excitement and wonder as they learn about the world and develop their interests. We are a popular three-form entry primary school, with an attached nursery, located close to Hackbridge Station. We have been at the heart of our community for over 100 years. Glenmuir Primary School opened in 1968 and has excellent accommodation and facilities, including a Food Lab, Dance & Drama Base, and School Library. The Gylemuir Early Years Hub is also housed in the school building. The school is set amidst attractive grounds which the children are encouraged to use to extend their learning outdoors. Gwladys Street C P and N School were visited by an assessor for the renewal of the Basic Skills Quality Mark. The assessor held discussions with the Headteacher, Deputy Head, Maths and English Subject leads a school governor, and a group of pupils. The assessor toured the school and was particularly impressed by Active Maths and the high standards the school is reaching. She was able to look at the school's assessment systems and a sample of children's books. We were very impressed by the group of pupils who spoke to the assessor as they were able to talk about how they use their maths skills in other areas of the curriculum and transferring their writing skills. Well done to all involved. At Gwladys Street in years 1 to 6, we follow the Liverpool Local Authority plans which are linked to the New National Curriculum. The year groups have Block units to teach the skills of the National Curriculum through different genres for each year group. Each unit builds up children's speaking and listening skills, reading and comprehension skills, and composition skills through the teaching sequence of: Immersion Analysis Writing Children have the opportunity to embed their skills through Science and the International Primary Curriculum on an afternoon by reading and writing different text types. Learning about other cultures and religions is an important part of our development. We are fortunate to have a variety of different faiths and beliefs in our school. In RE this year, we are learning about Christianity, Judaism, Islam, Hinduism, and Sikhism. We follow the Liverpool SACRE scheme. In RE, we do not just learn about religious practices and traditions, but also think about what part we play in our world and society. This gives us a great opportunity to be reflective. During the Summer Term, the Nursery is taking part in an exciting project called ‘Building a Bridge of Books.’ The project will run for 6 weeks with each session lasting around 3 hours. It allows parents and children to come into school and work together with me to build an early love of reading. The overall aim of the ‘Building a Bridge of Books’ project is to encourage and foster a love of books in young children. By taking part in this project, parents and carers are supporting their child’s development of early reading skills, including speaking and listening.
