We are enormously proud of the school’s rich history which has laid down foundations for academic excellence. We are equally proud of our innovative approach to educating girls in the 21st century, incorporating the benefits of the traditional with the modern. Our small classes allow for personalized individual attention to each child and the academic successes of our children are a testimony to their excellent teaching and their very own desire and drive to excel. Standards are high and expectations are great. At Harvington Prep School we place a strong emphasis on the creative development of the children and our drama and music departments are a strength of the school, enabling the children to perform and shine triumphantly. As a small family unit, our pastoral care is second to none. The children are happy and motivated learners, confident yet caring to those around them. Harvington Nursery takes girls and boys from the term that they are three up until they move to the next stage of their education in our Transition or a Reception class. The girls then progress through our Prep School. We are a happy, thriving community, with high educational standards. We encourage a love of reading from a very early age and our girls are often to be found in one of our libraries, browsing through our varied collection of titles. The study of literature is key to everything we do and our experienced teachers guide the girls through a novel each term, discussing and sharing the richness and nuances of the English language. We look at a varied selection of poetry and prose, in preparation for the challenges of the English 11+ examination. Our girls love writing their own stories and each week, we select one to celebrate and share, in our weekly assembly, as our Story of the Week. The school’s mission is to identify and develop to the full the natural talents and potential of each pupil and to prepare them for the next step of their education. The school seeks to achieve this within the context of a multi-cultural community, emphasizing strong moral and spiritual tenets shared with all faiths. Harvington School opened in 1890 as Heidelberg College, a kindergarten school run by two sisters, Misses Watson. The school was named after the birthplace of Miss Christabel Watson’s mentor and remained Heidelberg College until the First World War when in 1915 the staff and parents took the decision to rename the school, and Harvington was born. We begin our study of mathematics in Nursery, with number recognition, counting, and sorting. Harvington Prep School follows the Singapore Maths method of teaching mathematics, which enables the girls to be independent learners of a kinesthetic and visual approach, that lays down the foundations of problem-solving at a very early age. That way, our girls are well prepared and confident at applying their skills and their knowledge to the 11+ examination. Art and design are taught throughout the school and also in weekly after-school clubs for pre-Prep and Prep students. The art room is light and airy with a pleasant outlook conducive to a quiet, calm, and creative atmosphere. Throughout their learning, pupils have the opportunity to develop their skills and techniques in a wide variety of areas including painting, drawing, sculpting, needlework, clay modeling, and design. Students are exposed to a variety of artists and art styles to enhance their knowledge and understanding of art history, and to put their artworks into context. They are encouraged to work boldly and creatively in art lessons and have the opportunity to display and celebrate their masterpieces throughout the school and in external exhibitions and art competitions.
