Our academy is a member of the Harris Federation, a group of 44 primary and secondary academies in and around London educating some 30,000 young people. The Harris Federation Teaching School Alliance enables us not only to train and develop teachers and leaders in our academies but also to do so for other schools. Each academy is led and run by its Principal and other senior leaders: we are deliberately a federation rather than a chain. What unites us is a culture that ensures the children and teenagers in our schools get an excellent education within a happy, caring, and supportive environment. As a result of this, all Harris academies so far to have been inspected by Ofsted have been rated either ‘good’ or ‘outstanding’ with the vast majority being Outstanding. Many of these academies replaced schools previously considered to have been failing. The Harris Federation has been recognized as a top performer by education researchers at the Department for Education, Sutton Trust, and Education Policy Institute as well as Watchsted and PwC. We are a not-for-profit charity created by Lord Harris of Peckham. He and his family take an active interest in every Harris academy, supporting us financially and with their time. We are a small, successful Academy in New Beckenham that has recently been judged outstanding in every category by Ofsted. The Progress 8 figure for 2017 is 1.09 and our average grade at A-Level is a grade B. This means that we are now, the most successful school in the borough of Bromley and within the top 1% of schools in the country for progress. It is with enormous pride that I introduce our incredible school and the opportunities that benefit the girls so much. As a local parent myself, I know how important the decision about which school to send your daughter to is and about the relationship of trust that begins when a parent chooses a school to educate their daughter at. By getting Key Stage 3 right, the transition to Key Stage 4 is much easier for students. We intend to give students a ‘taste’ of as many subjects as possible, whilst preparing them for, and informing them about, their GCSE options. Literacy and numeracy skills are developed in every subject and across the curriculum. All students have a broad weekly curriculum offer of English, Maths, Science, Geography, History, Spanish, Religious Studies, ICT skills, Physical Education, Design and Technology, Food Technology, Art, Drama, Dance, and Music. To help our students prepare for success in an ever-changing world, we have developed a Key Stage 4 (Years 9, 10, and 11) Programme of Study that offers each student a focussed Curriculum Pathway, as well as an option to incorporate personal interest into his studies. All students follow a core curriculum of English Language, English Literature, Maths, Double Science, either Geography or History, and BTEC First Sport. The majority of our boys will also have a Modern Foreign Language as part of their core curriculum. Our students select their additional subjects to make up their curriculum. This selection is made up of vocational courses and other academic subjects. Personal, Social, Health Education (PSHE) is delivered through a combination of discrete lessons, the Tutorial Programme, and a range of "drop-down days" that run during each year. The Key Stage 3 curriculum is followed by students in Years 7, 8, and 9. Following their admissions tests for the Academy, Year 7 students are placed in mixed ability tutor groups. Welcome to Harris Academy Bermondsey. Harris Academy Bermondsey is a girls' school with drive and ambition in the heart of London. Ofsted rated us as Outstanding in every one of their categories in March 2015. All students are offered the chance to study a wide range of instruments, including violin, piano, keyboard, flute, saxophone, clarinet, trumpet, singing, drumming, guitar, and bass guitar, through free one-to-one lessons. Music Scholarships are also offered to Year 7 students who have two instrumental lessons a week, attend workshops with professional musicians as well as seeing live music every term. Students in Year 8 are introduced to increasingly complex texts and ideas through the widened range of literature studied. Students will develop different writing styles and develop their powers of observation and description, both of people and places, and will become more equipped at understanding and analyzing characters. Students will also interact with a greater range of non-fiction texts and develop their knowledge of Shakespeare as they move towards the key transition year of Year 9. We are now in our seventh year of conversion to a sponsored academy, and we are going from strength to strength! We were delighted to finally move to our brand new, state-of-the-art building this September. Staff and students are thrilled with our new spacious, modern facilities and have settled well into our new home. Our OFSTED Inspection in July 2017 judged our Academy as ‘Outstanding in every category, a remarkable achievement under the very challenging parameters of the new framework! The full report is available to download from our home page however some of the key comments published note the following: ‘The school’s culture of aspiration and ambition is demonstrated in classes. Teachers are aspirational for their pupils and set high expectations for them. Pupils respond positively. They are determined to do their best and are confident about meeting ambitious targets set by their teachers.’ Our 2017 results were yet again record-breaking! Our A2 students attained a remarkable B- average grade this is significantly higher than national averages, and the highest in the Federation! The number of students securing university places is rapidly increasing, now almost 90%, a growing number of which are Russell Group Universities. Against the new measure of basics (English and Maths GCSE combined), we were yet again well above the national expectations, scoring 69% and our progress 8 score is 0.38 (provisional). The number of students securing the EBAC measure is increasing yearly demonstrating success across a range of subjects. We are now fully co-educational, with young ladies in every year group from 7-13. Our recruitment drive proved to be exceedingly successful as we were oversubscribed for both Year 7 and Year 12. Harris Academy Battersea is now in its fourth year and during the time it has been open it has established itself as one of the highest performing schools in London. In 2017, we have been awarded the Evening Standard School of the Year as well as being named one of the Sunday Times Top 20 Schools in the country. In the last academic year, we were ranked 4th highest school in England and the top non-selective school nationally. With a provisional figure of +1.40 for Progress 8 this year, nearly three times higher than the +0.5 threshold set by OfSTED for 'Outstanding', we hope that we can improve on this further still. It means that a student who has predicted 10 'C' grades in a normal school would achieve 6 'B' grades and 4 'A' grades in our academy. Also pleasing is that we are a school that helps students achieve irrespective of country of birth or social demographic: there was virtually no gap in the progress of students to whom English is a first language or a second language and students who come from homes with less money than the national average were on an equal footing with those above. In terms of raw results, we are also the highest achieving school in Wandsworth with 83% of students obtaining 5A*-C including English and Mathematics. Our success is not limited to GCSE results alone. At A-level, we were top of the country for progress last year and with over 90% A*-C and an incredible 61% of students obtaining a 'B' grade or better, we were the highest achieving school in Wandsworth. Such results do not come easily and are borne out of the tenacity, resilience, and dedication that both our staff and students show daily. Teachers are relentless in their drive to help students succeed be it through the sacrifice of holidays to support exam preparation, Saturday morning revision sessions, or the countless late evenings that they commit themselves to. The safety and well-being of the children at Harrington Hill Primary School is our priority. Children cannot learn unless they feel happy and safe. We adhere to stringent Safeguarding procedures to protect the welfare of all the children who come here. It is the moral and legal duty of all adults in charge of children to be ready to protect children in danger from abuse. Education staff has a responsibility to observe, monitor, and refer suspected abuse. Any member of staff suspecting child abuse or neglect must refer their suspicions to the Designated Safeguarding Lead officers or Head of School, who will then refer to the local Social Care Team if appropriate. Staff must be aware that many more children experience abuse than are registered as requiring protection. It is therefore essential that school staff are vigilant in identifying abuse. School staff has regular training opportunities to ensure that they are kept up to date with current policies and procedures. At Harrington Hill, we are always striving for excellence in all we do and are happy to celebrate our successes. Over the last few years, we have our results rise significantly. We worked hard to develop our school grounds, with the help of the school and eco-council we were able to build and develop our wildlife garden and vegetable garden, even being recognized for our hard work by the Speakers School Council Awards. We won poetry competitions and took part in 'Clean up Clapton' events. The children had the opportunity to sing at The Roundhouse as part of the Hackney Music festival. We also were lucky enough to go to Bafta HQ and received a national Cut Film award for Under 11s Film of the Year for anti-smoking. This year we will be working together to ensure that all teaching is good or better, our results continue to rise and the children's writing continues to improve. We will be looking to develop our new curriculum and assessment procedures and ensure all teaching is good or better. Children who are part of the Eco Team will meet every week to discuss how Harrington Hill can become more sustainable. Our first project is focused on recycling. Currently, our Eco Team is taking steps to educate both staff and children about what can be recycled. Bag2School is the UK’s leading textile recycler and fundraiser working with schools and since its inception in 2001 it has now paid out over £27 million. As well as raising vitally needed funds for Harrington Hill Primary School, it also helps the environment by helping to divert unwanted textiles away from landfills. A recent DEFRA report has shown that textile collection schemes are helping to reduce the volume of textiles discarded as municipal solid waste. However, it is a fact that as a nation we still send 350,000 tonnes of textiles to landfills every year. By getting involved in our Bag2School collection, you have an opportunity to sort through your cupboards and wardrobes and donate unwanted textiles in the bag provided – this can include adults’ and children’s clothes, shoes (tied together please), hats, belts, handbags, and soft toys. In addition to raising much-needed funds, it will also raise awareness amongst the children of the benefits of recycling and reusing.
