Our Phonics teaching is based on ‘Letters and Sounds’ some aspects of ‘Jolly Sounds’ are incorporated. Children in Reception and Key Stage 1 participate in a phonics lesson daily. ‘Letters and Sounds’ is divided into 6 phases. Activities are divided into seven aspects, including environmental sounds, instrumental sounds, body sounds, rhythm and rhyme, alliteration, voice sounds, and finally oral blending and segmenting. Learning 19 letters of the alphabet and one sound for each. Blending sounds to make words. Segmenting words into their separate sounds. Beginning to read simple captions. The remaining 7 letters of the alphabet, one sound for each. Graphemes such as ch, oo, th representing the remaining phonemes not covered by single letters. Reading captions, sentences, and questions. On completion of this phase, children will have learned the "simple code", i.e. one grapheme for each phoneme in the English language. Children are regularly assessed in their phonics knowledge and work at the phase that is appropriate for them. Towards the end of Year 1, children are formally assessed through the statutory ‘Phonics Screening Test’. In Key Stage 2, spelling strategies are taught 2-3 times a week, alternating with grammar teaching. Phonics teaching continues into Key Stage2. Throughout the school children are given additional support as necessary to develop their phonic understanding and spelling skills. Holy Family School is a Voluntary Aided Catholic Primary school, administered jointly by the Archdiocese of Cardiff and Cardiff County Council LEA. Holy Family Catholic School and Sixth Form, formerly known as the Holy Family Technology College, is a very popular mixed secondary school with around 1150 students aged 11-19. The school’s Catholic ethos underpins all that we do and forms the basis of the Holy Family Way. We are a member of the Federation of Catholic Schools of Waltham Forest and work closely with our feeder primary schools to provide the best possible Catholic education for all our young people. We aim to educate the whole person, to develop each student’s academic potential as well as nurturing their creativity, spirituality, character, and resilience. Most of our students spend seven years with us, leaving the sixth form to start their degree courses at university, or to begin high-quality employment. We seek to instill in each of our students the belief that they should have a strong concern for others and that they should seek to do good in their school and their wider community. The school has very close partnerships with our parishes and with parents (including through an active PTA) all of which helps to reinforce this Catholic. In school, there is a very great emphasis on extra-curricular activities and all students are offered every opportunity to develop their knowledge and skills through after-school clubs in an array of different fields including sport, music, and drama. Holy Cross RC Primary School is situated in the North of Edinburgh. As a denominational school, our catchment area is widespread. The school attracts children from out with the catchment area as well as several other children of other or no denomination and children from a range of ethnic backgrounds. Staff also met regularly to moderate standards of writing and to plan collegiately. Our Nursery offered flexible patterns of attendance. E-Journals were used by all Nursery children. We will use the Education Scotland Benchmarks to help us assess how much progress we make with our learning, and create more opportunities for family learning. We will use Pupil Equity Funding to help ensure ALL pupils learn well at school and make good progress, targeting this at Nurture and in Literacy and Numeracy. We will continue our work towards Level 2 Accreditation as a Rights Respecting School and in Building Resilience. Our RE inspection reported that “Holy Cross School is at the heart of the local community and is outstanding at providing Catholic education” (November 2016) Our pupils achieve exceptionally well throughout the School. Our successes, however, go far beyond test results. Our children are confident and happy. At Holmleigh we aim to provide a broad and exciting curriculum enriched by an extensive program of educational visits and projects in school. We also maintain a commitment to raising money for charities. Our regular theme days provide a memorable context for the children’s learning. Holmleigh School will create an environment that is challenging and supportive to all pupils and staff and welcoming to parents and other members of the community. Holmleigh will provide all the children in the school with an efficient, quality education service that will enable them to achieve their full academic, creative and social potential. In October each year parents are invited to meet with the Head Teacher to discuss options for their child’s secondary education and to make an online application. Most of our children opt for Hackney secondary schools, whilst a few decide to apply in other boroughs. Results of applications are sent out in Feb/March the next year. When you walk around our school, you will find displays all around you, be it corridors or ceilings. Our displays reflect our children’s achievements, celebrations of many kinds, and of course work that they have carried out in their class. Below, you will find a selection of displays currently around the school from Nursery to Year 6. Needless to say, these displays are ever changing and when you visit us you might find different displays around. The school has a full complement of governors who meet regularly to discuss and inform the work of the school. They include parent governors who are elected by parents to represent their views. Governors make regular visits to the school to report on activities, and they participate in special events alongside staff, parents, and children. David Stranger-Jones and Karima Singh are our new Parent Governors. If you have any ideas or suggestions or want to speak to them, they are often around the school at either drop-off or pick up so just ask them for a chat. Their Internet is a great source of information. Nowadays internet can be accessed via a wide choice of devices including PSPs, DS, Wii, smartphones – pretty much any electronic device. So the advice to the parents to keep the computer in the living area in the house and limit children use is no longer a practical one. Instead, we need to educate ourselves and our children on how to be kept safe and what to do if in doubt. We expect all our pupils to adhere to Pupil Acceptable Use Agreement / e-Safety Rules. A copy of this is attached at the bottom of this document. Please read this with your child so that we have your full support for safe and secure use of ICT throughout the school. Children will normally be admitted to the nursery during the term following their third birthday. Application forms for a place in the nursery can be obtained from the school office. Please note that a place in the nursery does not guarantee a place in the Reception class. At the beginning of the year, each child is allocated a key worker and will have a different settling-in period depending if they had attended Holmleigh Primary School Nursery or not. Please read the booklet to find out more. Year one is the beginning of a new stage, hence is marked as KS1 (Key Stage 1). It is the beginning of more formal education and for some children, it can take a little longer to adjust than others. We work closely with Foundation Stage (Reception Class) and try to make the transition from Reception to year one as smooth as we can. One of how we ensure this is happening is that we hold a “transition meeting” with parents of children in Reception towards the end of the year. Although we are a small school and most children know most of the teachers, we still feel it helps children to pay a ‘visit’ to their next classroom and meet their new teacher. We have a handover meeting with Reception class teachers and Year Two teachers. We have the Foundation Profile assessments to find out about your child’s academic and personal achievements. We provide several after-school clubs both for KS1 and KS2 pupils. Places are allocated on a first-come-first-served basis. From now on school clubs will be by subscription only, charged at £20 per term payable in advance. The only exception will be clubs run at no cost by volunteers. (At present Chess Club is the only club in this category). This is because the school can no longer afford to subsidize after-school activities. Enrolment can be done either in person at the school office, or by completing the form below and enclosing cash or cheque made out to Holmleigh Primary School, for the appropriate amount.
