To fully meet the needs of our children, we are on an exciting journey as a school in developing our curriculum. At Holy Trinity CE Primary School we are developing a new approach to our curriculum planning and delivery and have adopted the Chris Quigley 'Essentials Curriculum' to promote a more creative and learner-specific curriculum to foster both a love of learning and drive for high standards. At Holy Trinity Primary School, we use the National Book Banding System. We do not follow one particular reading scheme and provide our children with a range of books from various reading schemes including texts from The Oxford Reading Tree. Storyworlds, Discovery World, Collins Big Cat, Rigby Star, Songbirds. We also provide our children with opportunities to read 'real books' and we are currently replenishing our supplies to include a wider range of reading materials. Early Years education is the foundation upon which young children build the rest of their schooling. It is a holistic education that encompasses all learning and development. This policy outlines the purpose, nature, and management of the Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS) at Holy Trinity C of E Primary School. The implementation of this policy is the responsibility of practitioners working in the EYFS setting, including both teaching and non-teaching adults. In the policy, the term ‘setting’ refers to the Early Years of educational provision at Holy Trinity C of E Primary School. Children are accepted into the Nursery when children are three years old. The Reception class is available from September of the academic year in which they will turn five years old. These children are in the final year of the EYFS. In the National Curriculum, this is referred to as the Reception Year or YR. In the policy, the term ‘practitioner’ refers to the members of staff working with children within the setting. At Holy Trinity C of E Primary School, we recognize the importance of establishing positive relationships with parents, as highlighted by the EYFS framework. We understand that an effective partnership between school and home will have a positive impact on children’s learning and development. So, practitioners endeavor to encourage the regular sharing of information about the children with parents. We value the role of parents as children’s primary educators. Practitioners encourage parents to share their unique knowledge of their child, providing further insight into the child as an individual (e.g. characteristics, interests, experiences, likes, dislikes). Keeping up to date with what your children are doing online can seem daunting. Technology is constantly advancing and sometimes parents feel that their children know more about the internet than they do. The use of technology in the home is now commonplace from tablets, laptops, phones, and gaming consoles just to mention a few and on many occasions, this can be taking place away from the eyes of adults. All staff complete safeguarding training on an annual basis whilst the school has four members of staff who have had further training these are the designated safeguarding lead and deputy designated safeguarding leads. At Holy Trinity Primary School we take the safety of children very seriously and have several policies in place to ensure that they enjoy school and learn in a fun and safe environment. On rare occasions, if your child has been prescribed medicine to be taken during the school day, staff will administer this. Please visit the School Office to hand over the medication and to sign the medical consent form. If your child needs to take the medication in school regularly, or if you need us to store medicines such as asthma inhalers and epi-pens for use in emergencies, you will be asked to complete an Individual Healthcare Plan for your child. To be a successful reader, you need the ability to blend sounds and letters, as well as the ability to show understanding of what you are reading. These two skills rely on each other – you cannot be a skilled reader without both skills. Phonics is the technical part of learning to read. Synthetic phonics is a method used for teaching reading and writing by hearing and identifying sound patterns in words. At Holy Trinity, we use the scheme ‘Read Write Inc’ to teach phonics. The scheme uses rhyme and visual representation to help children memorize sounds (phonemes) and learn how these are represented with letters (graphemes). Lessons are daily, are approximately fifteen minutes long, and taught at a quick pace. In these lessons, the children review their learning, are taught a new sound or skill, practice this and then apply it. Using their phonics knowledge as a foundation, children continue to learn spelling rules each year following the statutory requirement guidance in the National Curriculum. Each year group has an appendix with listed spelling rules that will be revised and covered across the year. Included in the National Curriculum are word lists for years 3 and 4 and years 5 and 6, these are statutory. The lists are a mixture of words pupils frequently use in their writing and those which are often misspelled. Children are expected to be able to use and spell these words by the end of year 4 or year 6. The Pupil Premium is allocated to schools with pupils on roll that are known to have been eligible for free school meals (FSM) at any time in the last six years. Schools also receive funding for children who have been adopted or looked after continuously and children of service personnel. The funding allocation per pupil changes each year. Schools have the freedom to spend the Pupil Premium, which is additional to the underlying schools budget, in a way they think will best address inequalities, tackle disadvantage, and support the raising of attainment for our pupils. This additional funding is invested in your child to help them achieve more at school. We also teach the British Values through the planning and delivering of a broad and balanced curriculum which we ensure includes real opportunities for exploring these values. Our behavior policy states, that when children achieve a Gold standard of excellent behavior at the end of the day, they are issued with a raffle ticket. All raffle tickets are placed in a Golden Box and four tickets are picked at random during assembly. The children who have a winning ticket can choose a prize. During class time, the children earn 'House Points throughout the school day. These are collated by the House Captains every Friday and the team that has the most team points wins a prestigious cup for the week. A running total of team points is on display in the hall. Children are also awarded individual certificates for earning House Points which are presented during Celebration Assembly. The school is closely linked with the parish church of Holy Trinity, and the relationship between the church and the school is maintained by the presence of the vicar on the governing body, and the weekly involvement of the vicar in assemblies and other school activities. The children also make regular visits to church. Also, our school works closely with the London Diocesan Board for Schools (LDBS). In the Foundation Stage, we organize the curriculum in line with the national guidelines for the Early Years and the areas of learning and development. To achieve the principles Holy Trinity teaches children Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM). Children are taught a range of science topics in line with the National Curriculum which links to Geography, History, and Art units from the International Primary Curriculum (IPC). This is a challenging curriculum that focuses explicitly on children’s learning. Our overall Curriculum aim is to provide quality teaching and support to enable our children to reach their potential with the highest possible academic standards, a positive attitude to learning, good self-discipline, and an understanding of the skills and qualities of others. To achieve this aim the Governors, Headteacher and Staff recognize the need to constantly review our practice to ensure our goals are being achieved. These are our broad curriculum aims for each subject that we cover in school. When Parents/Carers have to be given a place for their Nursery Age child, they will be invited into school for two transition meetings. The first one will involve just the Parent/Carers and we ask that you do not bring your child to this meeting. This meeting will outline the routines for your child and we will ensure that all the ‘paperwork’ for your child is complete. You will be also be informed of our Safeguarding procedures and this is a chance for you to ask any questions. The second meeting will involve you and your child coming for a ‘Stay and Play session. At this meeting, you will be given a start date for your child. We have a staggered intake to allow each child to settle in and the children will increase the time they stay over at least the first six days. If your child settles during this time they can stay full time. However, many children take longer than this so the settling-in period will be adjusted to meet the needs of your child as each child must be happy and settled with their new environment. As Holy Name School has a Foundation Unit there is little or no transition between Nursery and Reception children who already attend our Foundation Stage Unit. However each academic year we have several Reception age children who join Holy Name either straight from the home environment or other settings. These parents will be invited to a ‘Welcome’ Meeting where we will, outline routines provide relevant information for your child, ensure all paperwork is up to date, and it is a chance for parents, carers, children, and staff to meet each other and this is the beginning of the home/school partnership. This meeting also provides the opportunity for Parents and Carers to ask questions and staff to gain an insight into your child’s needs. These children can come for ‘little’ visits in the Summer term following this meeting. All Reception Age children will start school on the first day back for children in September. They will be given a full-time place and only if they do not settle will they be put on a phased settling-in period. In the Summer Term when your child is in Year 5 the Local Authority writes to the school to check pupil information so that they can allocate High School places according to your choices applying the admission criteria. As the Local Authority prefers online applications school will offer the use of our Computer Suite to assist Parents/Carers with their application. If Parent/Carers decide to apply themselves we will also ensure that all our Parents/Carers are aware of the deadline date and apply on time. Pupil’s transition to High School is well supported by the school. Loreto High has an extensive Transition program, which fully involves Years 4, 5, and Year 6 children. Care is also taken to ensure a smooth transition between classes, fully involving the parents. Loreto RC High School (formerly St Thomas Aquinas), is on Nell Lane in Chorlton. Since January 2002 the school has been on a single site at Nell Lane, Chorlton. Considerable renovations and state-of-the-art developments have been made to the school including a brand new dining hall/refectory of which the school is rightly proud. We are fortunate to benefit from the school’s Transition Programme in which teachers from the High School visit the Year 6 class, providing valuable support. The ethos of our Catholic School is embodied in the curriculum we offer to the children entrusted to us. Nursery and Reception classes are known as the Early Years Foundation Stage. The curriculum for these 2 age groups is planned in 6 areas of learning. These areas are personal and social development, language & literacy, mathematics, knowledge, understanding of the world, physical development, and creative development. Experiences are planned for both indoor and outdoor learning, which enable all children to make maximum progress in all areas. Years 1 and 2 are called Key Stage 1. Years 3, 4, 5, and 6 are called Key Stage 2. The curriculum is planned using QCA documents and the International Primary Curriculum. The core subjects are English, Maths, Science, and Computing, and the compulsory subject of R.E. The other subjects are called the Foundation subjects. These are History, Geography, Art, Music, P.E., and Design Technology. PSHE, Citizenship is also included in the curriculum. We seek to provide a broad and balanced curriculum, based on the requirements of the National Curriculum. To enhance this we will provide opportunities to undertake Educational Visits relevant and pertinent to the Topics children are studying, and provide activities and experiences which are an integral part of Primary Education. Literacy is taught based on the National Literacy Strategy. The emphasis is on enjoyment and understanding of a wide range of texts and authors. The children are taught word and sentence structure, the structures of writing for different purposes, and reading for meaning. Choosing the right school for your child is one of the most important decisions you will have to make and it is a very personal one. The DfE have recently reinforced the need “to create and enforce a clear and rigorous expectation on all schools to promote the fundamental British values of democracy, the rule of law, individual liberty and mutual respect and tolerance of those with different faiths and beliefs.” Holy Innocents’ is a single, stand-alone Academy that sits within the Bromley Catholic Schools Trust. The Bromley Catholic Schools Trust is an Umbrella Trust that has been established to promote and assist in the promotion of education in the London Borough of Bromley. The Trust aims to promote the achievement of high-quality education for all pupils in all Catholic schools within the umbrella and to promote and develop the Catholic ethos. Holy Innocents’ uses UNICEF’s Children’s Rights as a basis for much of its PSHE curriculum. Each year the children will decide upon their class charter and the rights associated with these. All children will contribute to the drawing up of the charter. Children have many opportunities for their voices to be heard. At Holy Innocents’ we have a School Council made up of elected class members from each year group, who meet regularly to discuss issues raised in classes. The School Council will often raise issues that are then passed on to the SLT or Head Teacher and can genuinely effect change within the school. We set the right balance between risk-taking and appropriate boundaries to nurture a ‘can-do’ mindset in our children within a supportive and caring atmosphere. Mutual respect is at the heart of our values. Children learn that their behaviors affect their rights and those of others. A key strength at Holy Innocents’ is the relationship between all our staff and the pupils. Visitors to our school and members of the public who see us out and about on the many trips we go on, comment positively on behavior, manners, and relationships. Though we embrace debate and differing opinions, from the governing body down throughout the school, we value and respect one another and we show this by using good manners in all our interactions.
