Our aim at Portway Primary School is to provide children with learning experiences that allow them to be their very best. We want to see the children flourish, thrive, and be happy, supported by strong and nurturing relationships. We work hard to ensure that the quality of our teaching is constantly improving so that the learning that takes place leads to high attainment. As part of the Leading Learning Trust, Portway Primary School works in partnership with Selwyn Primary School, an outstanding school in Plaistow and the trust’s sponsor. At the heart of our school are our vision for our children, their families, and our broader community. This vision is based on our belief that the purpose of primary education is to allow children to learn and grow in a calm, safe, happy, stimulating environment. We believe in setting our children ambitious targets and supporting every one of them to succeed, through the provision of support tailored to their individual needs. We work hard to ensure that children enjoy their learning – and that they are engaged both in the classroom and beyond, through participation in the large number of co-curricular activities we have on offer. In essence, we strive to be a learning community that: Cares for every child, so wellbeing and safety come first. Sets high expectations in the classroom, making learning enjoyable and exciting. Teaches right from wrong. Celebrates good behavior and achievement. Prepares children to be good citizens. Understands and meets the individual learning needs of children and their families. Equips children for their future through activity and experience, and reflects and celebrates local diversity, and encourages everyone to aim above and beyond. It is a primary aim of our school that every member of the school community feels valued and respected and that each person is treated fairly and well. In everything we do, we work to ensure that our children, staff, and families feel happy, safe, and secure. How we work together (i.e. our shared values) supports the achievement of this aim. Our curriculum consists of several exciting learning opportunities and activities which promote our trust motto ‘Learning. Together. For life.’ It is a rich, balanced and relevant program of knowledge and skills, which fulfills all the requirements of the National Curriculum (which sets out the knowledge and skills to be taught in all state-funded schools in England - and is also available on this page of the Newham website), and which is structured to meet the needs of every child. In addition to our classroom-based teaching, our children participate in outdoor learning experiences, which support the development of self-esteem and life skills. Walking around our school, visitors notice it is a calm and focused learning environment. We firmly believe that children benefit from a purposeful and tranquil setting in which to learn. At Portway, there is a clear homework timetable (further details of which are provided on the Homework page of the website), and children are expected to practice and consolidate their learning from school at home, supported by their parents and carers. Newsletters are sent home to inform parents and carers about the term’s learning, school events, and planned educational visits. Also, the Parents’ Area of the website contains both further information about our learning (i.e. a more detailed overview of the curriculum, class timetables, and end of year targets for English and maths), as well as information for parents re how they can help support their children’s maths and reading at home. We all have high expectations of our pupils. High standards of presentation and individual commitment are paramount at Portway. We believe that the classroom should reflect and celebrate learning and teaching through large, bright, and visually stimulating displays. Portway Primary School is a fully inclusive academy in the London Borough of Newham and follows the inclusive policy of all Newham schools. At Portway, all children are valued, respected, and welcomed to the school whatever their additional educational need.
