Our Lady's is a Roman Catholic Primary School in Whalley Range. We are a one-form entry school and have a 30 place Nursery. The school is one of three in the Parish of Our Lady and St Alphonsus. We are proud to be a Catholic School where Jesus Christ is at the heart of everything we do. The children, their families, staff, and our parish work together to create a wonderful, faith-filled community. We are a friendly and inclusive school with a strong commitment to ensuring that every child achieves high standards in all they do in school through providing a rich and stimulating curriculum. Our Lady's is a Catholic School in the trusteeship of the Diocese of Salford. It is maintained by Manchester Local Authority and is a voluntary aided school. The Governing Body is the Admissions Authority and is responsible for taking all decisions on applications for admissions. The coordination of admissions arrangements is undertaken by the Local Authority. For the school year commencing September 2018, the Governing Body has determined that the number of children to be admitted to the Reception class will be 30. The school’s role is to participate in the mission of the Catholic Church by providing a curriculum, including Catholic religious education and worship, which will help children to grow in their understanding of the Good News and the practice of their faith. The school will help the children develop fully as human beings and prepare them to undertake their responsibilities as Catholics in society. The school requires all parents applying for a place here to understand and respect this ethos and its importance to the school community. This does not affect the rights of parents who are not of the Catholic faith to apply for a place here. Admissions to the school will be determined by the Governing Body. Parents must complete a Local Authority Preference Form. If you wish to have your application considered against the school's religious criteria then you must ALSO complete the Supplementary Form which is available from the school. Our children are motivated, confident, and eager to take on new challenges. We have a dedicated and enthusiastic team of Teachers, Teaching Assistants, Support Staff, and Governors who work together to create a school where everyone’s contribution is valued and children feel a sense of achievement and success. A child has special educational needs (SEN) if he/she has learning difficulties or disabilities that make it harder for him/her to learn than most other children of about the same age. Some children may have a temporary difficulty with, for example, early skills, reading, number work, or behavior which can, with the help of parents/carers and early education settings/schools be overcome. Quite a lot of children have difficulties at some time during their education and it is perfectly normal for these difficulties to be sorted out in the school. At Our Lady’s RC Primary School, R.E. is a core curriculum subject. Our policy aims to demonstrate knowledge of the Christian faith, especially the teachings and traditions of the Roman Catholic Church, and the school’s mission to witness that teaching in our local and wider community. This policy has been prepared in consultation with all members of the teaching staff, approved and ratified by the governing body. R.E. provides a meaningful meeting point for religious and educational considerations. Regarding the former, it strives to acquaint the pupils with our shared Christian values, beliefs, and traditions. Concerning the latter, it encourages pupils to build a sense of integrity and appreciate their abilities. It provides all pupils with the possibility of growing in knowledge and understanding of religion and appreciation of the impact faith has on the lives of many people. Our aim is that pupils will develop an appreciation for the Christian message and mission, and thereby develop a sense of love of God, neighbor, and self. These, it is hoped, will engender in our pupils the urge for selfless service to the wider community and an awareness of justice for all. All children have access to an appropriate curriculum, differentiated to meet their needs. This enables them to learn to develop the necessary skills to build self-esteem, respect others, defend those in need, resolve conflict without resorting to violence, question, and challenge and make informed choices in later life. Access to cross-curricular activities will provide opportunities to develop self-esteem and self-motivation and to help pupils respect the rights of others, particularly those groups who may be considered a minority. The school’s governing body is the admissions authority and is responsible for taking decisions on applications for admissions. For the school year commencing September 2016, the governing body has set its planned admissions number at 150. The Governors recognize that the first responsibility of the school is to serve the Roman Catholic community for which it has been established. This is focused on the designated parish communities and the Roman Catholic primary schools that are partners in providing for those communities. School governors are one of the country's largest voluntary groups with around 300,000 contributing to strategic development and raising standards of achievement at more than 30,000 schools. School governors are members of their school's governing body, which is known as a 'corporate body'. A corporate body has a legal identity that is separate from its members and as a result, individual governors are generally protected from personal liability as a result of the governing body's decisions and actions provided they act honestly, reasonably, and in good faith. Individual governors have no power or right to act on behalf of the governing body except where the whole governing body has delegated a specific function to that individual or where regulations specify a function is to be exercised in a particular way. School governors are drawn from different parts of the community and can be parents and staff or from the LA, the community, and other groups. This helps ensure the governing body has sufficient diversity of views and experience but does not mean governors of a particular category represent that group on the governing body. For example, parent governors do not represent the parents at the school and do not report back to them. Pupil Premium funding is allocated via the Government specifically for children from low-income families who were eligible for free school meals, looked after children, and those from families with parents in the armed forces. Each school decides how their Pupil Premium is best spent to raise achievement and improve outcomes for the target pupils identified. Schools are however held accountable for how the funding is used and are expected to report to parents and the Governing Body on Pupil Premium expenditure. Pupil Premium funding is received retrospectively, based upon information supplied to the school by the Department for Education. The transition from primary school to secondary school can be overwhelming. Working closely with our local primary schools we run a comprehensive program of transition events designed to support children through this life-changing experience. Our transition days help build the confidence and self-belief pupils need to progress smoothly from a primary school environment to a new educational experience as part of the Our Lady’s school family. At Our Lady's R.C. High school we strive to provide a broad and well-balanced curriculum for students who most importantly have a choice in shaping their curriculum. In all departments we offer an engaging and inspirational learning environment, placing Christ at the center of everything we do. In the classrooms, we impart knowledge and strive for outstanding academic outcomes but we also feel it is paramount to nurture the young persons sitting in our classrooms. At Our Lady’s RC High School all pupils are given the support they require to allow each individual to achieve their full potential. In Year 7 and 8 a range of different strategies is used across the curriculum to provide additional support to develop literacy skills such as the teaching of reciprocal reading strategies. For pupils with specific learning difficulties regarding literacy and numeracy, interventions are devised which work on the pupil's specific areas of difficulty and if necessary develop the use of assistive technology to help develop independence. SEAL interventions are offered to pupils who require extra support in building self-esteem, confidence, self-regulation, and resilience. Our Lady’s High School is a place for learning. We achieve this by maintaining high expectations of the individual, appreciating that we are all members of a diverse community, living our Catholic faith, and embracing the values of our Servite founders. The government has allocated our school a sum of money which is called the "Pupil Premium". This is to improve the educational chances of students who may find circumstances outside school challenging due to financial hardship or other issues. The three identified groups are students who are entitled to free school meals (or have been anytime in the last 6 years, know as ‘Ever 6’), students who have a parent working for the Armed Services, and those children in Local Authority Care. Pupil Premium students are a diverse range of ages, backgrounds, abilities, and needs but disadvantage does not hinder potential. To reward excellent behavior, attitude, and work, students will be rewarded using achievement points recorded electronically on the school system. Achievement points will be rewarded for excellent work and attitude in lessons, and can also be awarded for excellent attitude and contributions to the school community outside of lessons. Students work towards particular awards which are received when they achieve a fixed number of achievement points. By receiving these rewards students will also be contributing towards their form class total. These awards start with text messages home from Form Tutors and Heads of Year before moving onto letters from one of the Assistant Head Teachers, the Deputy Head Teacher, and finally the Head Teacher. For those receiving the most achievement points, there will be special lunches with the Head Teacher and then one of the school Governors. It is important for parents/carers and other individuals to let us know when we have got it right so we can celebrate our successes. The existence of a complaints procedure should not be seen as a way of undermining efforts to resolve a concern informally. The formal complaints procedure will need to be used were initial attempts to resolve the issue have been unsuccessful and the person raising the issue remains dissatisfied and wishes to take the matter further. Safeguarding is the umbrella term for ensuring all our students feel safe and can achieve their potential. Safeguarding and Child Protection come under the same remit but given the very sensitive nature of Child Protection matters, a separate Child Protection Policy is in place at school. Safeguarding crosses all borders within the school environment from DBS (formerly CRB) of staff to site security and safety around the building. We are a supportive community that follows the Gospel message of ‘Love one another as I have loved you” (John 13: 34-35). Our community is based on a deep respect for the uniqueness and diversity found within each person, on quality relationships, and a deep sense of belonging. We spread the good news of the Gospel, that God loves us no matter what, through our actions as well as our words. Our Lady of the Rosary Primary School is situated at the end of Lourdes Avenue beside Our Lady of Lourdes Church. The school's main entrance is by Tarfside Gardens. The catchment area includes South Cardonald, Bellahouston, Mosspark, and parts of Dumbreck and Crookston. The building is 43 years old and has been dutifully maintained. This is enhanced by the extensive school grounds with more than adequate playground space coupled with two football parks. The school has 17 classrooms with 3 resource rooms to provide further support for the teaching and learning process. A gymnasium and assembly/dining area are of excellent quality and fine proportions. Our nursery class offers pre-school education to 40 children in the morning and 40 in the afternoon. Over the years Our Lady of the Rosary has enjoyed an excellent reputation in terms of academic success, religious education, and sporting prowess. We are constantly promoting positive ethos and achievement. This means we daily work to maintain and raise our standards. In Our Lady of Peace Primary, we all work hard to ensure that all pupils know that they are valued members of our school and their community. Our motto is “love, live, laugh, and learn”. Curriculum for Excellence has been introduced to raise standards of learning and teaching in all 3 to 18-year-olds. It aims to help prepare children and young people with the knowledge and skills they need in a fast-changing world. As part of Curriculum for Excellence, all children from pre-school to the end of S3 will receive a rounded education known as a Broad General Education (BGE). Curriculum for Excellence is all about bringing real life into the classroom and taking lessons beyond it. Here in Our Lady of Peace, we aim to offer a broad curriculum that is both challenging and enjoyable. In this way we enable children to become Successful Learners Confident Individuals Responsible Citizens Effective Contributors Every child is entitled to a broad and deep general education, whatever their level and ability. Curriculum for Excellence has been introduced across Scotland for all 3 – 18-year-olds – wherever they learn. This curriculum framework balances the importance of knowledge with skills. It develops skills for learning, life, and work to help young people to go on further study, secure employment, and navigate life. It brings real life into Quality Assurance. Early handwriting skills are developed using a variety of materials in the class. This leads to more formal work based on Nelson Writing. Creative writing is developed using “Big Writing”. Children are introduced to VCOP in Primary 1 and this is further developed at each stage. The Collins Big Cat Reading scheme is used throughout the school to support reading. A variety of other schemes support this including Oxford Reading Tree, Jelly and Bean, and Oxford Project X. At OLM we believe that English is best taught through the use of high-quality texts. Foundation Stage follows the principles of CLPE which particularly emphasizes the importance of books and literature in enabling children to become confident, happy, and enthusiastic readers and writers, The Wordsmith scheme is used from years 1 to 6 and also focuses upon learning through a variety of different texts. At OLM, we follow 'Maths No Problem' to deliver our maths curriculum. At the heart of the approach is teaching maths for mastery. When taught to master maths, children develop their mathematical fluency without resorting to rote learning and can solve non-routine maths problems without having to memorize procedure At Our Lady of Muswell, our SEND policy directly reflects the whole school mission statement. We aim to have early recognition of learning, emotional and physical difficulties, through baseline assessments and screening. We work cooperatively with outside agencies to aim to provide the most qualified support for the children e.g. Occupational therapist, speech and language therapist, and educational psychologist. Our Lady of Lourdes’s Catholic Primary School is an inclusive and welcoming school. We offer a range of provisions to support children with Special Educational Needs and Disabilities to ensure that all pupils, regardless of their specific needs, make the best possible progress in school. Legislative changes in the Children & Families Act require schools to have a different approach to the management and provision for pupils that have a Special Educational Need or Disability (SEND). These changes became law on 1st September 2014 and at this point, all schools were required to publish information about how they support SEND in their school. The aim is to ensure that where possible, all pupils will have their needs met in a mainstream school with access to the right resources, professional experts, and the best teaching. This will ensure progress all over time. For some children and young people, a mainstream setting will not be the right place so that they get the best provision to meet their needs. Children, young people, and their families are more involved in decisions about the support they receive. Education, Health & Care Plans are developed to support children who have significant additional needs and these plans will very often involve other agencies outside the school. Schools will still maintain records about pupils who have additional needs in a single school-based category called “School Support”. At Our Lady of Lourdes, we separate this by age. Seven areas of learning and development must shape educational programs in early years settings. All areas of learning and development are important and inter-connected. Three areas are particularly crucial for igniting children’s curiosity and enthusiasm for learning, and for building their capacity to learn, form relationships, and thrive. All pupils will be challenged within their ability with the ablest pupils (those on track to achieve “Greater Depth”) offered early opportunities to explore their learning at an advanced level. With this in mind, we will also not routinely move pupils into a higher year groups curriculum since the aim of the New Curriculum is to achieve a much broader knowledge and understanding at each year group rather than racing ahead with knowledge.
