Welcome to Wavertree Church of England School. Wavertree CE School is a small primary school in the heart of Wavertree overlooking the Mystery. The Victorian building was beautifully renovated in 1999 and further improvements have recently been made. Our Christian values (Thankfulness, Friendship, Forgiveness, Trust, Compassion, Fellowship, Peace, and Humility) underpin all aspects of our school children are encouraged to demonstrate our eight values every day. We are very proud of the achievements of our pupils and celebrate success every week. At Wavertree, CE schools work very hard to provide the children with a broad and balanced curriculum that has been designed to ensure progress. This curriculum is presented creatively through a topic-based approach. We are responsible for specific areas of the curriculum to ensure that learning opportunities are maximized each term. We offer a Breakfast Club for pupils in Reception - Y6 each morning and an After School Club Provision is in place for pupils. At Wavertree School, each class embraces a Christian value that we all strive to follow within the school and in the community beyond. Every class will learn about their Christian value and will share something of their learning with the community through a Class Assembly each year. This year Wavertree CE School is aiming to raise the profile of reading so that our children begin to recognize the value of reading for pleasure. In school, all classes are organizing and hosting a huge variety of different reading activities. We are hoping to get many parents involved too. We hope that we will be able to achieve the Reading Quality Mark which recognizes us as a school that embraces reading as an integral part of our learning and opens door to new worlds. In 1867 the National Society for the Education of the Poor, a foundation created by The Church of England, built a school on the edge of the expanse of land now known as The Mystery. This school, to be known as Trinity District School, was designed by architect Edward. The building continued to function as a Church of England Controlled School throughout the 20th Century. Daily log books were handwritten by headteachers and now in the care of the University archives show a fascinating insight into the day-to-day life of the school through the ages, and include some particularly poignant accounts of pupils who failed to return to school the day after many of the night bombing raids of the Second World War. During the protracted negotiations involved in achieving this, both aesthetically and financially, the newly-named Wavertree Church of England School continued to operate between two sites-the St. Bridget’s building, and Trinity District- as two parallel schools on either side of the Wavertree Mystery Park (St. Mary’s having already been demolished, and a Nursing Home built on the former site). When building work finally started, both schools were decanted into the much smaller Thorneycroft Rd site. Privations resulting from the rapidly disintegrating state of the old St Bridget’s school and an arson attack which caused a large part of the building to be permanently sealed off created a huge challenge to pupils and staff, and it was with great relief that the school was finally able to move back into the newly refurbished Prince Alfred Road building in May of 1998. A non-selective, non-denominational, co-educational primary free school, Watling Park School welcomes children from all backgrounds. Opening in September 2015 with two Reception classes of 30 children, the school will grow organically to reach its capacity of 420 pupils. Watergate is Lewisham’s primary special school for children, between the ages of three and eleven years, who have severe learning difficulties. Our pupils have a variety of individual needs. A significant number of our pupils have a diagnosis of autism. There is a small number of pupils with profound and multiple learning difficulties. Some pupils have additional physical and sensory disabilities. Watergate offers a personalized curriculum tailored to individual needs, modified as appropriate, from the National Curriculum. The School Direct training program is open to both top graduates and career changers. It offers talented individuals the chance to be part of a teaching team from day one by combining teacher training with on-the-job learning. The support and guidance were given to all trainees to ensure that the placements are successful and work in harmony with the university. Trainees are based in their ‘host school’ for the year with a second placement of up to six weeks in a contrasting age range during the spring term. All mentors are experienced teachers and senior leaders. The school ensures that all children have full access to the curriculum by making explicit, through year group and individual teacher planning, the essential differentiation that ensures that children with special educational needs are working on the same curriculum. Wardie is a non-denominational school situated within the Trinity Academy catchment area in the north of Edinburgh. The catchment is bounded by the Firth of Forth to the North and the Royal Botanical Gardens to the South. The school is situated on large grounds consisting of grass, woodland, and some tarmac areas. The play areas are attractive. Playground equipment is available for classes to use. Loose Parts play is accessible for pupils. Adjacent to the site is a large sports recreation ground owned by the City of Edinburgh Council and used by local schools. The school was originally built in 1931 with additional classrooms built more recently. Twelve of the classes are arranged around a central garden area, which has a veranda leading from the six Primary 1 and 2 rooms. In summer 2013, three classrooms were added to the school as part of the Rising Rolls program and the older classroom unit was reconfigured into two classrooms. In 2015, two more additional classrooms were built as part of the Rising Rolls 3 program and a brand new nursery was opened in August 2015. In the main building, there is a Music and Drama base, a Library, and limited additional GP space. The gym hall is used regularly for assemblies as well as PE. There are 21 classes including the nursery and the current school roll is 485. Wardie is a non-denominational school with a nursery, three classes at the Primary 1 to 6 stages, and two classes in Primary 7. The school is located to the North of the city of Edinburgh, close to the Firth of Forth with the Royal Botanical Gardens to the south of its catchment. Next to the school is a large sports recreation ground. The school grounds are managed by a committee of enthusiastic staff, parents, and pupils and there is a long-term development plan incorporating provision for play and conservation.
